    * This miniseries/hopefully show is currently Number 2 in the United States. It's excellent. Anya Taylor-Joy is a joy to watch in this.

    * I consider this miniseries is an even better depiction of feminism than C.J. Cregg in The West Wing.

    * Apparently, there's a TON of demand for the book and it's out of stock and there's some 'price gouging' going on with old copies.

    * ATJ is going to play a young Furiosa in the new Mad Max movie. She's literally the first person and this is literally the first time I'd accept someone playing a younger Buffy Anne Summers than what Sarah Michelle Gellar could play without CGI and such.

I'd still prefer an animated Buffyverse something if a live action something isn't feasible.

I haven't heard of this. Do you know if it is only currently on Netflix or some such?

    * Seriously, I'm I the only poster on this Board who has watched The Queen's Gambit? This is one of Netflix's most popular recent offerings.

I really enjoyed this. It was intelligently written and doesn't go exactly where you expect. It is not the second coming of Buffy, truly my favorite show ever, but i did watch it in one day, something I seldom do.

I really liked the characters they built - complicated and nuanced and real. And fundamentally decent for the most part.

Regardless of the history under the bridge, her real friends prove to be real and there for her, and I found THAT moving.

I kinda loved her and the fact this wasn't *about* her finding happy ever after with anyone, but finding herself and learning to stand on her own two feet, but without rejecting what she can learn from others.

It never feels as though coming out on top means she must become a woman all alone. Good show, subtle points. Felt real.

      4.95/5

PS, i almost never ever give 5/5 or 10/10

Edit: i think atj would make a kick ass slayer. May need to write a QG crossover where she becomes a slayer!

        * This show is Number 1 in the US. It's beating Chappelle's Show.

I'm very hopeful that somehow this gets a Season 2.

        * This show is essentially and effectively a 7-hour movie. It's not comparable to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This show focuses on Beth Harmon and Anya Taylor-Joy carries the show.

The Buffyverse is an ensemble and has around 250 40-45 minute episodes and then the canonical pre-Season 8 comics, Season 8, and Season 9.

It's certainly on my list, but I want to finish The Alienist first. So I'll return to this thread later.

I really enjoyed this show. The casting was great, they did a great job matching the young and older actors playing the same role. I was so impressed with how they used makeup hairstyles and home decor to bring us back in time. I was starting to worry that it was going to have a really depressing ending and I'm really glad it did not. I loved the ending.

I watched it. Actually before the opening day (via Netflix press screening) and I love it. ATJ is truly fascinating. I don't see any Buffyesque thing in this show but I saw it in The New Mutants film (also with ATJ). The director is a big Buffy fan and parts of The Body and Hush appears in the film. Even the whole DVD Buffy collection.

I said something like I wouldn't mind Anya Taylor-Joy playing Buffy Summers in a live-action Buffyverse something if Sarah Michelle Gellar somehow couldn't or wouldn't play the role anymore.

I haven't seen The New Mutants and still haven't seen any of ATJ's other movies and TV shows. But I still plan to see The Witch and Emma.

The Queen's Gambit is one of the best movies/TV shows of the past several years and I hope that somehow a Season 2 can happen.

                    Okay, I just finished it.

ATJ was phenomenal indeed, but I didn't expect less of her. I've seen her in several things (Peaky Blinders, The Miniaturist, Emma) and she has such a wide range and an amazing screen presence. The supporting cast was good as well, especially Marielle Heller as Alma.

                    Spoiler:
The relation between Beth and Alma was the greatest part about this show anyway. Such a wonderful, complicated and tragic but warm relationship. I don't really understand what I should make of Alma's husband/Beth's father since it was just weird how he left them. But I was glad he was gone and we just got a lot of Alma and Beth together.

And I agree with what has been said here before about the show having a much happier ending than expected. It wasn't just Beth who overcame a lot of trouble, but nearly all characters were very nice. None of her chess rivals enjoyed seeing her lose control over her life and they turned out to be very good friends. They even made Borgov a decent man, while most shows would've probably made him a bad loser or something like that. Same with the Russian fans who were all very supportive of Beth, even when she defeated their own best chess players.

I'm a bit sad that Mr. Shaibel died before Beth managed to address him properly though.

And to end with a shallow comment: this show was super pretty. Especially Beth's clothes were beautiful.

I've just finished it. It's a good miniseries that's very stylish, has a great central performance and costumes etc. and isn't fully a typical "inspirational sports drama", but I feel it's a bit overhyped. People have been talking about it like it's the best show on TV, which is a bit of an exaggeration,
You keep waiting for the dust to settle and then you realize it; the dust is your life going on. If happy comes along - that weird unbearable delight that's actual happy - I think you have to grab it while you can. You take what you can get, 'cause it's here, and then...gone.

I don't consider it over-hyped. I don't consider it the best show on TV.

The Queen's Gambit relies heavily on Anya Taylor-Joy's performance.

Off the top of my head:

                        Sex Education

                        The Babysitter's Club

                        Killing Eve

                        Harley Quinn

                        are overall better.

I made this thread because of how popular the show is, it's a feminist show, and bizarrely no one on BuffyForums was discussing it.

I am surprised there is no thread for this show. It was very unexpected in a good way. Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, the show went in another direction and I loved that.

I think it hasn't come off Netflix yet, so I haven't had the chance to see it. I'm pretty sure someone mentioned it before and I looked at the time, but I've just checked in case it had made it to Prime, but no.
