    TEASER

    OPEN ON:

    EXT. SUBURBAN AREA - NIGHT

"Keeping the Dream Alive" by Freiheit plays.

The instrumental introduction begins. The camera sweeps over the many houses, moving towards one that looks like all the rest. A woman in her 30s stares out of the window thoughtfully as the rain falls.

    CUT TO:

    INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

She slowly turns and picks up a coat, walking out of the kitchen. There is a close up of the fridge as she walks past. It has a tally chart with the names "Callista" and "Mitch" on. There are sixteen lines beneath Callista's name, seventeen below Mitch's. The camera slowly moves toward the list.

    CUT TO:

    EXT. STREET - NIGHT

The lyrics of the song begin as we see the woman walking through the rain. She walks with purpose, yet without rushing.

    ?Tonight the rain is falling
Full of memories of people and places'

    CUT TO:

    INT. HOUSE - NIGHT

A couple kiss one another, smiling. Candles are lit around the room. As they part, the shadowed figure of the woman seen before, stands on the other side of the window, watching them.

?And while the past is calling
In my fantasy I remember their faces'

    CUT TO:

    EXT. FRONT YARD ? NIGHT

The woman stands watching them, but with a distance in her eyes. She suddenly takes a small pistol and walks away from the window

?The hopes we had were much too high
Way out of reach but we had to try'

    CUT TO:

    INT. KITCHEN ? NIGHT

The woman walks back into her own kitchen, placing her coat down. She takes a pen and writes two more tally marks underneath "Callista". She looks at it happily.

?The game will never be over
Because we're keeping the dream alive'

    FADE TO: GREY

    FADE TO:

    INT. JULIET'S OFFICE, HAVEN

Juliet is sat behind her desk. Gael is sat on the opposite side. He looks awkward as he stares at Grace who is stood before Juliet's desk, holding a gun in her hands. She stares at Juliet seriously.

Grace: You really think this is a good idea?

    Juliet hesitates leaning forward.

    Juliet: It's a precaution.

    Gael looks troubled.

Gael: Lie detectors've been working all right so far.

Juliet: Sure. They're good, but I'm not willing to leave everything up to a machine that's only 96% effective.

Grace: And a bullet's gonna give that extra 100%?

She raises her eyebrows. Juliet exhales.

Juliet: Look, you don't have to take them-

    Gael: Ok.

Gael stands. Juliet and Grace both look at him. Gael shakes his head.

Gael: I can't, Jules. I can see what you want to do, but I don't want to be responsible for one of those things. Not with...not with everything...

He shifts uncomfortably. Juliet hesitates but then nods. She smiles a little.

    Juliet: I understand.

Gael smiles back weakly as well.

    Gael: Gotta get back.

Juliet nods. Gael looks at Grace.

    Gael: Coming?

Grace looks hesitant but nods at him. Gael smiles a little and then walks away. Grace pauses, looking at the gun in her hands. She exhales and then holds the gun handle out towards Juliet. She smiles weakly shaking her head.

    Grace: He's right. I'm sorry.

Juliet looks disappointed by nods. Grace places the gun back on the table.

Grace: Are you gonna ask any of the others?

    Juliet pauses.

Juliet: To be honest I was hoping I wouldn't have to.

Grace nods slightly, but looks awkward knowing that Juliet was relying on her.

Grace: If you're serious about the extra security thing...then maybe you should think about it a little harder.

Juliet hesitates but then nods. Grace bites her lip.

Grace: The kitchen calls, as ever.

    Juliet smiles a little.

    Juliet: I'll see you later.

Grace nods and walks away. Juliet is left alone. She stares into space and then down at the gun that Grace put back.

    CUT TO:

    INT. SUMMERTIME GENERAL ? DAY

Mark is behind the till. Aura is stacking shelves nearby. Mark stares at her seriously.

Mark: Did she say when she'd be back?

Aura places two bottles on the shelf in front of her. She looks agitated and shakes her head.

    Aura: Just "soon".

Mark places his hands on the till counter, leaning on them.

Mark: Sam is gonna notice sooner or later.

Aura turns to him looking serious.

Aura: Right cause I coulda just told her to move along to the next criminal hotel down the street.

    Mark hesitates, exhaling.

Mark: I know we can't do anything, ok? Sorry.

Aura hesitates and then nods, accepting the apology. Mark purses his lips, looking anxious.

Mark: How much did you give her?

    Aura shrugs.

Aura: Little more than usual I guess. She said it was almost enough.

    Mark considers this.

Mark: Here's hoping "almost" sticks around for a while.

Aura looks at him. She nods seriously. The main door opens. Aura and Mark turn to see the woman seen in the first scene of the episode (Callista) accompanied by a man also in his late 30s. Callista is heavily pregnant and is wearing a pink and blue, floral pregnancy dress and white trousers. The man is equally casual, with a long-sleeved orange shirt and beige trousers. They walk in looking flustered, and continue walking towards the till.

Callista: It's not like I haven't told you I'm allergic to seafood. Like five times.

The man holds his arms out as he follows her.

Man: You were the one who asked for shrimp!

Callista: I am pregnant Mitch, it's not unusual to have cravings, that doesn't mean you suddenly forget what food might kill your wife.

Mitch: I didn't forget! Look you might not be aware, but you can be a little difficult to deal with when you're-

They stop at the till. Callista gives him a dangerous look.

Callista: What? Carrying your spawn around for nine months? Yeah that does sometimes to make me a little testy!

Aura and Mark have been watching, a little taken-a-back. Mark opens his mouth.

    Mark: Um...

Callista looks at him. She looks weary.

Callista: Yeah, can we get uh, crazy nuts or whatever...

She turns back to Mitch to continue her sentence. He rolls his eyes.

Callista: The hardest thing you've had to do is get me what I need, and it's not like you've got that right most of the time.

    Mitch: Hey, I provide.

Callista: Right, the kid'll have no problem finding Jack Daniels until at least fourth grade.

She raises her eyebrows pointedly at Mitch who looks irritated. Aura walks up to them.

Aura: Uh, we need to ask you a few questions.

Mitch and Callista both look at her.

    Callista: Excuse me?

    Aura tries to smile.

    Aura: It's for security.

    Callista rolls her eyes, sighing.

Callista: Are we talking paperwork? Cause I am so not in the mood.

    Mitch: What kind of questions?

Aura and Mark look at one another for help. Callista sighs again, leaning towards Mark across the till.

Callista: Yes, I'm sorry the annoying pregnant couple have ruined your day, but we really need a room, or two actually cause there's no way we're gonna fit in a single bed. Sooner would be good.

Mark looks awkward and quickly types something. He takes a small wire and gives it to Callista.

Mark: Attach this to your finger please.

    Callista raises an eyebrow.

Callista: Please tell me Ashton Kutcher isn't watching us.

Mark opens his mouth to speak but settles on shaking his head. Callista sighs and quickly attaches the wire. She looks impatient. Mark looks at the computer.

Mark: So...you're just criminals? Who've committed actual crimes?

He looks at them. Mitch looks confused.

    Mitch: What?

    Callista looks confused but shrugs.

    Callista: Yes, yes we are.

    He looks at the screen.

Aura: And you're not working for anyone? Like, a company called Amethyst?

Mitch frowns at her. Callista shrugs.

    Callista: No.

She looks at Mark. He nods. He smiles awkwardly.

Mark: Ok, think we're good to go. If you'd like to follow me.

Callista raises her eyebrows looking unimpressed.

    Callista: Woop de doop.

Callista and Mitch begin to walk round as Mark opens the back door. Aura follows them. Callista looks around as she follows Mark, looking dubious.

Callista: Is this place gonna have a spa or something?

Mitch rolls his eyes. Mark looks back awkwardly.

Mitch: I'm sure they'll build one just for you honey.

    Callista shoots him a look.

Callista: Maybe they'll have classes on how to be responsible father-to-be as well, especially for you, sweetie.

Aura raises her eyebrows as she goes offscreen.

    ACT I

    CUT TO:

    INT. DEVYN'S ROOM, HAVEN

Devyn is sat on his bed, typing at the computer. There is a knock at the door. He looks up.

    Devyn: Mmhmm?

Juliet walks in. Devyn looks a little surprised, getting up. Juliet stays next to the door.

Juliet: Oh, I didn't mean to disturb you I just wanted to know how the expenditure program's going.

    Devyn hesitates.

Devyn: Oh...uh, it's good. I mean, I'll be done later today.

Juliet smiles a little and nods.

    Juliet: Good.

Devyn nods. There is a short pause. Devyn raises his eyebrows.

    Devyn: That is it, right?

    Juliet opens her mouth.

Juliet: Uh, I guess I was just wondering why you're in here. I mean you've been working in the dining area before now.

Devyn: I was kinda there to talk to Carla and now she's gone...

    Juliet nods.

Devyn: And the glaring looks from Gael get kinda old after a few hours.

Juliet looks awkward as she glances down.

    Juliet: Right.

    Devyn inhales and nods.

    Juliet: I...

    She stares at him.

Juliet: I don't think it's gonna be this way forever. The air...gets cleared. Even when it is provided by a not-so-efficient air-con.

Devyn smiles a little. Juliet smiles back slightly.

Devyn: Is this you trying to tell me that...we're ok again?

    Juliet hesitates.

Juliet: It's...important that we don't our differences get in the way of our professional relationship.

    Devyn frowns slightly.

Devyn: And that's all we have?

    Juliet looks down.

Juliet: Devyn I don't really have time to have this conversation right now, some guests have just arrived...

    Devyn exhales and nods slowly.

Devyn: Let me know when you have...time.

He stares at her. She pauses and then nods. She walks out. Devyn is left looking disappointed.

    CUT TO:

    INT. HAVEN LOBBY

Juliet walks out, the conversation she just had with Devyn still on her mind. Tegan looks up from behind the reception and looks alert.

    Tegan: Hey, Jules, Jules, Jules!

    Juliet turns to her.

Tegan: Oh my God, have you read Mommy and Daddy's files?

    Juliet exhales, looking serious.

    Juliet: Yeah...

Tegan raises her eyebrows, surprised that Juliet has not reacted more.

Tegan: This is like...more kills than anyone else in the last five years.

Juliet steps towards the reception and nods, looking at the ground.

    Juliet: I wouldn't be surprised.

    Tegan narrows her brow.

Tegan: Yeah, I think I'm getting that. Are you not like...a little concerned? I mean sure they don't look dangerous, but, these numbers are not friendly.

    Juliet shrugs.

Juliet: How many of our guests are?

    Tegan hesitates.

Tegan: I know, of course, I-I know that serial killers are people too and everything, but...are you sure we're safe with people who just...well, kill for the hell of it?

    Juliet hesitates.

Juliet: If I think there's a risk I'll deal with it, ok?

    Tegan: Deal?

Juliet: I will ask them to leave. Persuasively, if necessary.

Tegan hesitates but then nods. Juliet's expression softens.

Juliet: Sorry, I'm a little preoccupied.

Tegan: Something is preoccupying you over the serial killers?

    Juliet: Devyn.

    Tegan relents.

    Tegan: Oh. Progress?

    Juliet shrugs.

Juliet: I guess. I think he's pretty eager for there to be.

    Tegan nods.

    Tegan: Two weeks later.

Juliet cocks her head in agreement.

Juliet: Guess I should be too. I'm not even angry with him anymore, really, but...I can't help feeling like I'm betraying Gael or something, which is ridiculous right?

Tegan hesitates but then nods, exhaling.

Tegan: Kinda is. If Gael's still upset, that's his right, but there's no reason why that should extend to you. You have you to follow what you feel.

    Juliet sighs and nods.

    Juliet: Better go check downstairs.

Tegan nods as Juliet walks away. She looks after her, thoughtfully.

    CUT TO:

    INT. ROOM 13

Callista is sat on the bed, looking unimpressed. Mitch is stood folding his arms nearby.

Callista: You know I think these beds were made by someone who's never actually slept on one.

    Mitch rolls his eyes.

Mitch: Are you actually gonna complain about everything, or, should the ceiling expect criticism shortly?

Callista smiles falsely at him. Mitch sighs and looks away. Callista then glances upwards surveying the ceiling. Juliet looks round the open door, knocking. She smiles politely.

Juliet: Hello, uh just coming to check everything's ok.

Callista cocks her head for a second.

Callista: It'll do. Thanks. Anyway I need to lie down.

    Juliet smiles a little, awkwardly.

Juliet: Sure, I imagine you're tired.

    Callista: Uh huh.

Callista smiles a little wearily. Juliet looks awkward for a second and then backs out. Mitch glances at Callista who is already lying down. He looks at the ceiling and then walks out.

    CUT TO:

    INT. HAVEN SECOND LOWER CORRIDOR

Juliet turns as Mitch walks out behind her. She looks a little surprised.

Juliet: Don't you wanna be with your wife?

    Mitch smiles awkwardly.

Mitch: Please, this is the first time in weeks I've had a chance to get away.

    Juliet smiles cautiously.

    Juliet: Oh. Ok.

She hesitates and then begins to walk away. Mitch watches her.

Mitch: Hey, um, I just want to make sure you know uh...

Juliet turns and waits for him to continue.

Mitch: We came here because we needed somewhere for Cal to give birth. It could be any day now, we don't have a due date, but...

Juliet considers this for a second. She smiles politely.

Juliet: I'm sure we can make something work.

Mitch smiles nodding. Juliet looks down and begins to walk away. Mitch turns and walks towards Room 14.

      ACT II

      CUT TO:

      INT. HAVEN LOBBY

Callista appears at the top of the stairs that lead down to the first lower corridor. Gael is stood talking to Tegan. They look over as Callista stumbles slightly. Gael hurries over and attempts to help her. Callista looks uncomfortable but smiles slightly.

      Gael: Careful.

      Callista: Thanks.

Callista stands upright. Tegan watches her, an element of apprehension in her eyes. Callista sighs as she looks at the stairs. Gael smiles a little.

Gael: This place wasn’t really built with pregnant women in mind.

      She looks at him.

      Callista: Yeah, I’m getting that.

Gael’s smile becomes a little awkward as Callista looks at him. Callista looks at Tegan who immediately looks away. Callista raises her eyebrows.

Callista: Uh huh, so, I’m guessing that you’ve read our file.

Gael hesitates and then nods, his hands in his pockets.

      Gael: We read everyone’s.

      Callista nods.

Callista: And you’re worried that Mitch or I might suddenly kill ya all? That’s fair, I mean around the lower teens we mighta done when things were getting exciting.

Tegan raises an eyebrow, not entirely comforted by this. Callista exhales.

Callista: You people’ve given us security and everything, how stupid would it be for us to kill you? Besides, I’ve decided to stay away from the Serial Mom label.

She rubs her stomach. Gael nods.

      Gael: That’s...good.

      Callista smiles slightly.

Callista: Well food is kinda required. It’s just through here?

She indicates the doors to the dining area. Gael nods and smiles. Callista begins walking and glances at Tegan. She walks through into the dining area, Gael watching her as she does. Tegan looks at Gael.

Tegan: I don’t know about you, but I’m still freaked.

      Gael shrugs.

Gael: The fact that someone like her killed all those people?

      Tegan hesitates and nods.

Tegan: Guess so. I mean I’ve seen a lot of killers, and most of them aren’t...that.

She points at the dining area. Gael considers this.

Gael: Most thieves aren’t exactly like you either.

Tegan realises this is true. She glances over at the dining area.

      CUT TO:

      INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

Callista can be seen eating at a table nearby. Grace walks past another table with two dirty glasses. A man is sat nearby, reading a magazine. He is in his mid-30s, with short brown hair. He is dressed quite casually in jeans and a brown jacket. He glances up as Grace passes him.

Man: Hey, uh, can I get a coffee please?

      Grace looks at him.

Grace: Mm, if you go over to the little machine right over there and press the button, coffee’ll magically appear.

She raises her eyebrows looking preoccupied. The man narrows his brow, smiling slightly.

Man: Wow, that is a revelation, it’s like I’m watching ‘Annie Hall’ again for the first time.

Grace glances over, raising an eyebrow as the man stands up.

      Grace: You like ‘Annie Hall’?

The man holds out his hands for a second.

      Man: Who doesn’t?

Grace hesitates for a moment, looking at him.

      Grace: I prefer ‘Manhatten’.

The man considers this, looking unconvinced.

Man: Hmm, ‘s good, but come on, Allen had nothing till ‘Annie’.

Grace narrows her brow, leaning over to clear plates from a table.

Grace: And that makes it better?

Man: It makes it more important.

Grace looks unimpressed as she stands upright.

Grace: Maybe you need to watch ‘Manhatten’ again and tell me that it’s not important.

He points at her, smiling slightly.

Man: I never said it wasn’t.

Grace opens her mouth to retort but then looks confused.

Grace: Why am I talking to you?

The man raises his eyebrows, looking surprised.

Man: I believe that Woody Allen is responsible for bringing us together?

Grace stares at him and frowns. She begins to walk away. The man watches her as she does.

Man: Hey. I’m Dominic, if you still care, that is.

Grace stops and looks at him. She tries to look like she doesn’t.

      Grace: I’m Grace...enjoy your coffee.

She speaks quickly and then walks away. Dominic smiles to himself at the encounter he just had, shaking his head slightly.

The camera moves over to Callista as she prongs several pieces of pasta on the end of her fork. She puts the fork into her mouth glancing up. Warren is sat nearby. He glances at her, looking a little afraid. Callista realises this, smiling weakly at him. She exhales and looks over to see another woman staring at her. The woman quickly looks away, trying to be subtle, but failing. Callista looks down, wearily. She stands up, picking up her bowl. Mitch appears next to her.

Mitch: Coulda told me you were coming up here.

Callista: Yeah, well, now I’m telling you that I’m going down again. Happy?

She walks with her hand on her stomach, towards the lobby. Mitch looks a little confused and follows her.

      CUT TO:

      INT. HAVEN LOBBY

Mitch: Is the dining area a little less than perfect?

Callista: Apart from the continual staring from, uh, everyone? It’s just peachy.

She walks away as Mitch stops, watching her. Tegan looks up from her desk.

      Mitch: People’ve always stared, Cal.

Callista stops and looks at him.

Mitch: It’s not like we do something that’s just a little bit unusual. They have documentaries about people like us.

      Callista looks annoyed.

Callista: Well I thought this place was different.

She looks at Tegan and holds her hand out, looking back at Callista.

Callista: See, she works around criminals every day, and we still get the “uh oh, it’s the crazy serial killer couple” look.

      Tegan looks awkward. Mitch hesitates.

Tegan: Well...that look isn’t really one I give that often.

Callista and Mitch both look at her.

Tegan: Sure there are other killers in Haven but...no one who compares to you guys. And that’s gotta have an effect.

      Callista sighs. Tegan looks curious.

Tegan: Why did you...what made you wanna kill all the people you did?

Mitch looks hesitant. He and Callista share a look.

Mitch: I doubt anyone but us could understand that one.

      Tegan: Try me.

He glances at her. She looks interested. Mitch exhales. He slowly approaches the reception counter as he talks.

Mitch: Well...Callista and I met...a long time ago. We were...in a mental institution-

      Callista: Oh, please!

Callista rolls her eyes. Mitch turns to her, frowning.

Callista: If you’re gonna make up some story then at least try not to make us out to be some psychos who could snap at any time.

Tegan confused. Callista sighs as Mitch looks hesitant. She looks at Tegan.

Callista: Truth is? Mitch and I are both as sane as you are. We just have a...different way of looking at the world.

She glances at Mitch for him to continue. Tegan raises an eyebrow.

Tegan: In that you kill people?

Mitch sighs and looks at Callista.

      Mitch: She’s not gonna understand.

Callista: So? Tell her anyway if she wants to know.

She shrugs. Mitch looks back at Tegan.

Mitch: We were a normal married couple for a few months. Then a man that Callista worked with got her fired because he wanted the promotion she should have had. And then he died.

Tegan looks at the couple dubiously. Mitch hesitates.

Mitch: A few weeks later a woman broke into our apartment and held a gun to my head. She wanted everything we had. I used self-defence...and she died as well.

Tegan looks pale. Mitch looks serious, as does Callista.

Callista: We realised that the value of human life is pretty much a myth. It became a lot easier to get rid of the people in our way after the first. Kinda became a recurring thing.

Mitch and Callista stare at Tegan.

Mitch: After a while you don’t see them as people. They’re just...problems.

Tegan looks as if she can almost relate to this, but still looks troubled. Mitch sighs and looks at Callista. He looks at the bowl in her hands.

Mitch: You should eat that before it gets cold. You keep saying the baby needs warm food.

      Callista looks annoyed.

Callista: The baby needs a lot of things, but you wouldn’t know about those seeing as I’ve had to take care of most of them.

      Mitch rolls his eyes.

Mitch: Even if I was carrying that kid, you would still find a way to make this about you.

      Callista narrows her eyes.

Callista: And the thing about that argument is? You’re not. So funnily enough? This is about me.

Callista walks away toward the first and second lower corridor looking annoyed. Tegan is left staring awkwardly at Mitch. He looks at her and then begins to follow Callista. Tegan stares after him, taking in the information she has learned.

      CUT TO:

      INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

Grace is wiping down one of the tables. She glances over at Dominic who is sat talking to Warren. Her gaze lingers upon him for moment. He then looks up. She quickly looking down at the table she is wiping. Dominic continues talking as he glances back at Warren. Grace glances up again and then begins to walk toward the kitchen. As she does, Gael can seen watching from behind the canteen.

      CUT TO:

      INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

      Grace walks behind the counter.

      Grace: That’s those all done.

Gael smiles at her. Grace smiles but then narrows her brow slightly as Gael continues.

Grace: Is that especially pleasing for you to know?

Gael glances away and then back at Grace.

Gael: I believe, Miss Hill, that I’ve just seen you staring at a certain Pineapple.

Grace frowns slightly and then follows Gael’s glance. She looks at Dominic for a second and then at Gael. She attempts to laugh it off.

Grace: Pfft, no! And he’s not a Pineapple. He’s...a grape.

Grace nods, affirming her point. She then walks towards the kitchen. Gael narrows his brow looking surprised.

Gael: Uh, what the hell is “grape”?

      CUT TO:

      INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Grace walks in, followed by Gael. Grace speaks while walking.

Grace: Dominic is...is a grape. A-a guy that is fairly good looking but one that I am...not interested in. That is your example.

      Gael raises his eyebrows.

Gael: Oh, so it’s “Dominic” eh?

Grace gives him a look. Gael grins. Grace rolls her eyes.

Grace: Ok, so he has...slight Pineapple characteristics. So what?

Grace looks awkward as she hangs up her apron. Gael smiles more genuinely.

Gael: Is it so bad for you to like someone?

      Grace looks flustered.

Grace: I don’t. I hardly know him anyway. You talk to guests all the time, and you don’t get with any of...

Grace stops herself. Gael’s smile fades slightly. Grace looks awkward. Gael smiles past Grace’s slip-up.

Gael: Well, if you do decide you like him, just remember that it’s not the end of the world.

      Grace sighs.

Grace: I will keep that in mind.

She then smiles more genuinely as Gael smiles back. He exhales.

Gael: Really are all done down here?

      Grace looks around nods.

Gael: Got some beer. Fancy heading up?

      Grace smiles.

Grace: Are you trying to seduce me Mr Sampson?

      Gael laughs.

Gael: Only if you’re willing to be seduced.

      Grace smiles back.

Grace: I’ll let you know after a beer or two.

She grins, turning towards the fridge. Gael laughs back a little.

      CUT TO:

      INT. JULIET’S OFFICE

Juliet is looking through a file. There is a close up of Devyn’s name. Juliet reads the file carefully, looking uncertain. There is a knock at her door. She looks up and puts the file back in the cabinet, closing it behind her.

      Juliet: Come in.

The door opens and Mitch comes in. Juliet looks a little surprised but smiles politely.

      Juliet: Oh, hello.

      Mitch smiles slightly.

Mitch: Hope you don’t mind me just walking in here...

Juliet: Uh, no, uh, take a seat.

Mitch smiles a little awkwardly and walks over to the seat the Juliet has indicated. Juliet walks over and sits down behind her desk as Mitch sits also. He exhales. Juliet looks at him, expectantly.

Juliet: So, is there a uh, problem?

      Mitch hesitates.

Mitch: Well, uh, I think there will be.

      Juliet narrows her brow.

Juliet: Do you wanna elaborate on that?

      Mitch nods.

Mitch: Callista and I...we haven’t killed for a long time. She became pregnant and we decided that we should stop.

      Juliet hesitates but then nods.

Mitch: We’ve both killed twenty-six people. I’m worried that...Callista is biding her time, so that she can get ahead of me. I think she’ll kill again.

Juliet looks serious. Mitch stares at her.

Mitch: To her...this has become a competition between the two of us.

Juliet looks worried as she considers this.

Juliet: You think she might attack you?

Mitch hesitates. He slowly shakes his head.

Mitch: I think she might harm the kid.

Juliet looks alarmed as she hears Mitch’s theory.

      CUT TO:

      INT. HAVEN LOBBY

Tegan is sat behind the reception. Devyn is leaning against the desk. The two are in mid-conversation.

Tegan: It’s not like I’m suffering some deep trauma.

Devyn: No, I know you’re not. Just these things sometimes seem to go away...and then come back.

      Tegan sighs and smiles slightly.

Tegan: I will let you know.

      Devyn nods. Tegan’s smile fades.

Tegan: To be honest it has kinda woken me up a few times.

      Devyn looks serious.

Devyn: To be honest...Eric kinda wakes me up too.

Tegan looks a little surprised to hear this. Devyn looks at the counter and then back at her.

      Devyn: Do you know how Gael...is? I haven’t really...well you know I haven’t.

      Tegan exhales.

Tegan: Uh, he...is pretty good, actually. He’s not said anything about...

      She hesitates.

Tegan: I think he’s ok. Just getting back to normality and stuff.

      Devyn nods.

Devyn: Good. I’m glad that he’s able to.

Tegan nods slightly. She bites her lip.

Tegan: Are you thinking of...talking to him, or anything? Cause if you wanted to try, I mean, what have you got to lose?

Tegan tries to look hopeful. Devyn hesitates, smiling awkwardly. Suddenly gasping is heard. “My Moon, My Man” by Feist begins to play. Tegan and Devyn both turn in the direction of the first lower corridor steps. Devyn quickly walks over. Tegan follows more cautiously. Callista is stood at the top of the stairs, holding on the banister for support. She is bent over and looks uncomfortable. Devyn looks worried. He goes to help her.

      ‘My moon, my man
      So changeable and
Such a loveable lamb to me ‘

Devyn: Hey, hey, careful are you-

Callista screws up her face as she gasps in pain. She looks at Devyn breathing deeply.

Callista: My water just broke downstairs.

      ‘My care, my coat
      Leave on a high note
There's nowhere to go but on’

Tegan’s eyes widen. Devyn looks over at her, wondering what to do. Tegan opens her mouth.

      Tegan: I...will find Juliet!

She smiles uneasily at Callista who Devyn is helping into the lobby. Tegan begins to walk toward the main corridor.

      ‘Heart on my sleeve
      Not where it should be
The song's out of key again’

Devyn: And your husband, Tegan you should find him too-

      Callista: No!

      ’ My moon's white face
      What day and what phase
      It's the calendar page again’

Tegan stops, looking surprised. Devyn also looks confused. Callista continues breathing deeply and looks from Devyn to Tegan.

Callista: The baby’s not safe with him.

Devyn looks confused. He looks at Tegan who stares back, equally puzzled. Callista clenches her teeth as her contractions continue.

      ‘Take it slow
      Take it easy on me
      And shed some light
Shed some light on me please
      Take it slow
      Take it easy on me
      And shed some light
Shed some light on me please’

        ACT III

        CUT TO:

        INT. JULIET'S OFFICE

Mitch is still sat opposite Juliet, who looks concerned.

Juliet: You really think she could do something like that?

Her tone indicates she is unconvinced. Mitch hesitates.

Mitch: You do not know Callista. She can be pretty...vicious, when she wants to be.

        Juliet narrows her brow.

Juliet: Even so, Mitch, I mean...her own new born baby?

        Mitch stares at her.

Mitch: Everything is telling you that she is couldn't do that. I get it. But believe when I say, she could. She always has to win.

        Juliet frowns.

        Juliet: And this...would be winning?

        Mitch nods.

Mitch: For her, it would. Staying one step ahead of each other...it's what's kept us alive, all these years. The difference now being that I've learned to control that urge...whereas she...she still trouble overcoming it.

Juliet looks troubled. There is a knock on the door. Tegan walks in looking worried. She glances from Juliet to Mitch, and then back at Juliet again. Juliet looks concerned.

        Juliet: Tegan?

        Tegan smiles awkwardly.

Tegan: There's...something that, uh...Gael, needs to talk to you about in the kitchen.

Tegan nods to herself, affirming her story. Juliet looks confused by Tegan's tone but nods.

Juliet: Ok. I'll be right out.

Tegan: Yeah, he really needs to talk to you.

Tegan looks eager for Juliet to follow her. Juliet frowns looking a little irritated. She looks at Mitch.

Juliet: Mind if I just sort this out?

Mitch moves his hand, smiling a little, indicating for her to go ahead. Juliet smiles back and stands up. She walks over to Tegan looking confused. Tegan begins to walk with her to the door.

        Juliet: What is it?

        Tegan inhales.

        CUT TO:

        INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Callista is lying on the kitchen table, breathing heavily. She is clutching Aura's hand tightly. Devyn is holding a damp cloth and walks over to Callista. Mark is stood next to the table looking uncertain as to what he should do. Devyn looks from Aura to Mark as he applies the cloth to Callista's forehead.

Devyn: Either of you had any experience with this kinda thing?

Mark shakes his head. Devyn looks at Aura. She shrugs.

        Aura: Have you?

        Devyn frowns.

Callista: Telling me that none of you know what you're doing is not helping!

She shouts the last few words. Aura winces slightly as Callista clutches her hand tighter. Devyn looks worried. Mark looks around.

Mark: Aren't Grace and Gael supposed to be here?

        CUT TO:

        INT. GAEL'S BEDROOM

Gael and Grace are lying together in Gael's bed, apparently naked under the covers. Grace is lying her side, while Gael is on his back, but both are staring at the ceiling.

        Grace: It was...nice. Right?

Gael turns his head to look at her. He smiles a little.

Gael: Course. I mean I wouldn't have...there were indications that it was pleasurable.

Grace glances at him and smiles back. Gael looks back at the ceiling. There is pause. Gael's smile fades a little.

        Gael: Though...

        Grace nods knowingly.

        Grace: Yeah. "Though."

Gael shifts on to his side, sighing. Grace looks at him.

Gael: Without sounding like a gimp; it's not you, it's me.

        Grace rolls her eyes.

        Grace: You're breaking my heart.

        Gael grins.

Gael: You've got good skills. That's never changed.

Grace: Uh huh. And don't you forget it.

Gael laughs a little. She supports her head her elbow leaning on the pillow.

Grace: But I think you'd prefer your skills...with a penis attached.

Gael smiles awkwardly. Grace raises her eyebrows.

Grace: It's ok. Not like I'm totally surprised. Was gonna happen somewhere down the line.

Gael hesitates and then nods, smiling a little sadly.

        Gael: S'pose so.

        Grace nods.

Grace: And now I'm gonna have to find someone else to have random sex with, and it's all your fault.

Gael rolls his eyes and sits up. Grace grins, still leaning on the pillow. Gael stares forwards. He looks pensive.

        Gael: It's weird thinking...

        He looks back at her.

        Gael: That...was the last time.

        Grace looks thoughtful too.

        Grace: So long Mr Passion-Fruit.

Gael smiles. He strokes Grace's arm quickly.

        Gael: Goodbye Miss Mango.

There is suddenly frantic knocking on the door. Gael and Grace both look alarmed.

Tegan OS: Gael? Are you in there?

Gael looks at Grace and then quickly gets up.

        Gael: Um...yep. What is it?

He quickly slips some boxers on, and starts putting on his trousers. Grace sighs and reaches down for her bra.

        CUT TO:

        INT. HAVEN STAFF CORRIDOR

Tegan is stood outside Gael's door.

Tegan: Really could do with you upstairs. Like now.

        CUT TO:

        INT. GAEL'S ROOM

Gael is putting his shirt on, Grace is slipping into her skirt.

Gael: Uh, yeah, won't be a sec.

Gael looks around, and then at Grace.

Gael: You seen my other sock?

        Grace shrugs.

        CUT TO:

        INT. HAVEN STAFF CORRIDOR

Tegan hears this and then realises. She rolls her eyes slightly.

        Tegan: (quietly) Great timing.

        Gael OS: Sorry?

        Tegan sighs.

Tegan: Nothing, just hurry ok? We have an imminent pregnancy problem.

        CUT TO:

        INT. GAEL'S ROOM

Gael and Grace freeze for a second, their eyes widening as they look at one another.

        CUT TO:

        INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Callista is breathing heavily, surrounded by Juliet, Aura, Devyn, Mark and Tegan. Grace and Gael hurry in. Gael walks over, but Grace stops, raising an eyebrow.

Grace: She's gonna give birth on the kitchen table?

She looks unconvinced. Juliet looks under pressure.

Juliet: We don't have too many other options.

Callista cries out as she has another contraction. Aura holds the towel to her head looking concerned.

Aura: It's all right, you just keep on breaking my hand, I ain't gonna mind too much.

Callista looks too distracted by her pain to listen properly. Juliet looks serious.

Juliet: I have to go back to Mitch.

Callista suddenly responds as she hears his name.

Callista: Don't let him come in here!

Juliet: I-I won't. Uh, Devyn can I borrow you?

Devyn looks up and nods. Gael glances at him a little awkwardly but Devyn walks straight to Juliet. She looks at the others.

Juliet: Try to manage while I'm gone.

        Tegan looks anxious.

Tegan: I hate to say it Jules, but, we have very little managing capabilities. If you and Devyn go our combined experience...is still zero.

        Juliet looks flustered.

Juliet: I know, I know, but we're gonna have to try, so...do your best.

She walks away. Devyn smiles sympathetically at Tegan before walking away. The others are left with Callista who is still breathing deeply.

        CUT TO:

        INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

Juliet walks past, followed by Devyn, as Mitch walks around the corner. Juliet looks alarmed momentarily before feigning civility.

Juliet: Mitch! Sorry, that I left you so long, I was just...attending to a problem.

Mitch: Uh, it's all right, but you were gone quite a while, is everything ok?

Devyn: Yeah, just a leak in the kitchen, kinda difficult to control.

Mitch nods, accepting this. Juliet looks grateful for Devyn stepping in. She smiles at Mitch. He smiles back a little.

Mitch: Uh, I wondered if we could continue our conversation from before-

Juliet opens her mouth looking awkward.

        Juliet: Ye-es...

        She glances at Devyn.

Juliet: We can do so in my office! If that's all right.

Mitch nods and turns towards the lobby. Juliet follows. Devyn widens his eyes at Juliet as she walks away. She walks backwards for a few seconds giving him a look as if to say "what else can I do". Devyn rolls his eyes and turns around, back to the kitchen.

        CUT TO:

        INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Mark is knelt next to Callista.

        Mark: Right so...keep on...what you're doing. That's, that's good.

Callista grits her teeth as she gives him a look. She grabs his hand as she cries out in pain once again. His eyes widen.

Mark: Ah-ah-ow-oh, ok, ok, that's good too.

He winces slightly as she squeezes his hand. Aura raises her eyebrows and gives him a look, indicating she knows how he feels.

Tegan is stood near the sink, getting several towels out hurriedly. Grace appears next to her.

Grace: Do you want me to do anything?

        Tegan stares at her.

Tegan: I beg you not to make me the one in charge here.

        Grace raises her eyebrows, shrugging.

Grace: I know no one knows what to do but...didn't you get like a 2100 on your SATs?

        Tegan narrows her brow.

Tegan: There is no pregnancy preparation SAT. And I got 2120.

Grace: Well you got 2120 more than I did.

Tegan rolls her eyes. Devyn walks back in. Tegan walks over with the towels. In the background Callista and the others can be seen. Gael glances over.

        Tegan: Where's Juliet?

        Devyn: She...is with Mitch. Stalling.

Tegan rolls her eyes and walks over to the other side of the kitchen where Callista and the others are. Grace walks up to Devyn.

Grace: (whispering) Why is it so bad for him to come in here? Is she worried how he'll react?

        Devyn exhales.

Devyn: (whispering) They have this thing going, it's kinda sick, I don't really get it but...she thinks he might try for kill number 27.

Grace looks confused for a second. Then she realises and looks aghast.

        Grace: (whispering) The baby!?

Devyn: (whispering) I know, but whether it's true or not, something happening that she doesn't want to happen is not gonna help this go smoothly, so we're gonna have to work with that.

        Grace considers this.

        Grace: (whispering) Does Juliet know?

Devyn shakes his head looking serious. He walks over to the others. Grace looks a little taken-a-back but what Devyn has just told her but then follows.

Devyn walks round to Callista's side. She looks a little calmer now.

Devyn: Callista, you need anything else?

She exhales, looking weary but manages to smile.

Callista: I'm...ok, thanks. Contractions are getting a little less, for now. God I hope this doesn't take as long as my last pregnancy.

        Tegan looks at her.

        Tegan: How long was that?

        Callista exhales.

Callista: Let's just say I saw the sun set and rise in a hospital bed.

Aura and Mark share a look. Callista closes her eyes again as she looks in pain. Gael looks sympathetic.

Gael: It's all right. Got enough people here to manage longer than that.

Callista cocks her head slightly, smiling for a second. Devyn glances at Gael but he avoids looking back. Grace still looks uneasy.

Grace: I, uh, might go and check on Jules.

Devyn nods. Grace backs away and walks out.

        CUT TO:

        INT. JULIET'S OFFICE

Juliet looks uneasy as she sits behind her desk listening to Mitch, who is sat opposite her.

Mitch: I realise why you might not want to get involved in this. You have no reason to trust me, or believe that I'm no longer the man who killed twenty-six people because they were inconvenient.

        Juliet frowns.

        Juliet: Twenty-six...is, a lot.

        She looks troubled.

Juliet: But you're not the only one with a big total.

He stares at her. She bites her lip, looking at the desk.

Juliet: I get why you think Callista could do this, but...there is a big difference between killing strangers, and your own flesh and blood.

Mitch hesitates, looking down. He looks troubled.

Mitch: There is...something else, you should know.

Juliet looks worried; what else is she about to learn? There is a knock at her door. Juliet looks impatient.

        Juliet: Yes?

Grace walks in. She smiles awkwardly.

Grace: Hey...uh, Jules, something important's come up.

Mitch looks at her. Juliet hesitates.

Juliet: Uh, about the leak? In the kitchen?

She widens her eyes, indicating for Grace to go along with what she says. Grace hesitates but then nods.

Grace: Yeah, it's...still causing a problem.

Juliet nods. She looks at Mitch. He smiles a little.

Mitch: If you need to go, please do, don't worry.

Juliet smiles weakly and nods. She stands slowly.

Juliet: Actually, Grace, there's something you should know.

        She looks at Mitch.

Juliet: Mind if I tell her?

        Mitch nods thoroughly.

        Mitch: Go ahead.

        Grace looks confused. Juliet hesitates.

Juliet: Mitch thinks the baby...when the time comes...might not be so safe in Callista's company.

        Grace looks surprised.

        Grace: Really?

She looks at him. He nods. Juliet looks at him also.

Juliet: What were you about to tell me?

        Mitch looks down.

Mitch: There is...one other kill, that isn't listed on Callista's record.

Juliet looks worried as Mitch begins to reveal this, as does Grace. Mitch looks up.

        Mitch: We had...a son.

        Grace's face goes cold.

Mitch: We were in hiding at the time, no one knew us. I had to steal for us to get by. I came back one day, and found Callista in tears. She told me that there had been an attack, some gang had tried to take what little we had and...and Ryan...that was his name...

        Mitch looks upset.

        Mitch: He was killed.

        Juliet looks grave. She swallows.

        Juliet: But...you think that-

Mitch: I've been in that situation. Callista's tear weren't tears of fear. They were tears of guilt.

        He speaks bitterly.

Mitch: I know her. And I know...she had killed our son. And I hated her...but I loved her as well. I had to stay...

He looks at the ground looking conflicted. His eyes appear glazed over. Grace and Juliet stare at him sadly. Mitch looks up at Juliet.

Mitch: There is no "gap" for Callista to cross, Juliet. She's already stepped over it.

Juliet looks worried. Grace glances between her and Mitch, no longer sure what to be certain of.

          ACT IV

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Gael is propping up pillows behind Callista’s head. Tegan is sat on Callista’s right side. Callista smiles gratefully at Gael. She is now covered in a blanket, and looks calmer than she did before.

Callista: I’m guessing most of your guests don’t cause this much trouble.

          Gael smiles a little.

Gael: Trouble is pretty much our usual around here.

Callista smiles for a second but then closes her eyes looking serious. She opens them again.

Callista: Juliet’s still with Mitch, right?

          Tegan: Yeah, don’t worry.

Callista nods but still looks anxious.

Callista: Wish I had more time to plan what I’d do when this happened.

She closes her eyes again, looking weary. Gael looks at her, contemplatively.

Gael: If you knew he’d try and...and hurt the baby, why’d you stay with him?

Callista opens her eyes and looks at him. Tegan looks interested to hear the answer also.

Callista: You’ve never been in the situation that I’m in every day, ok? Where there’s one person in the world who understands you and that one person gives you a reason to keep on going.

          Tegan: You love him?

Callista looks at her and hesitates.

Callista: I love that when I’m with him I don’t have to pretend to be this person that’s “normal”. So yeah, I guess I do. But he only accepts me cause deep down he’s as screwed up as I am, and I know that the urge to kill is the one thing that keeps him going. Cause before the baby that was what kept me going.

Tegan looks serious, as does Gael. Callista sighs. She then grits her teeth.

Callista: Oh crap I think they’re starting again.

She moans in pain slightly. Gael and Tegan look at one another. Devyn walks in and over to them. He looks troubled.

Devyn: Uh, Tegan, Juliet needs you.

Tegan raises her eyebrows. She indicates Callista.

          Tegan: I’m kinda busy here.

Devyn: I’m...sure Gael can take care of it for a few?

Devyn looks insistent. Gael glances at him and then at Tegan. He nods.

          Gael: ‘S fine. Go.

Tegan shrugs and stands. Callista glances over. She notices Devyn’s face.

          Callista: What is it?

She breathes heavily. Tegan, Devyn and Gael all look at her. Callista narrows her brow.

          Callista: Has Mitch said something?

She looks worriedly at Devyn. He opens his mouth to respond but his hesitation gives away his answer. Tegan looks at him, confused. Devyn swallows, realising Callista knows something is awry.

Devyn: What would you expect him to have said?

          Callista closes her eyes.

Callista: Goddamn it I knew he’d try something.

Devyn stares at her. Gael and Tegan look confusedly at Devyn. Callista looks in pain but stares at him also.

Callista: What’d he say? That I’m “dangerous” or whatever?

          Devyn hesitates.

          Devyn: Something like that.

          Callista narrows her eyes.

Callista: Oh, right. And you realise you’re talking to a man who killed his own kid?

Tegan and Gael turn to Callista in shock. Devyn also looks alarmed.

Callista: Guess he didn’t tell you that part?

          CUT TO:

          INT. JULIET’S OFFICE

Juliet and Grace are stood between Mitch and the door.

Juliet: I really think you need to give us...more information about, uh, about what you suspect.

          Mitch narrows his brow, shrugging.

Mitch: I’m not sure what else there is to tell. Look, Callista’s probably wondering where I am, I don’t wanna have to listen to her complaining for the rest of the night, so I better get back...

He smiles for a second and then walks past. Juliet glances at Grace, wondering what to do. Suddenly Devyn walks in quickly. Mitch looks surprised as he appears in front of him. Devyn looks quickly from Mitch to Juliet and Grace. Juliet frowns slightly as she sees Devyn’s expression.

Devyn: Things just got more complicated.

          Mitch begins to look worried.

Mitch: Is-is it Callista? The baby?

Devyn opens his mouth, hesitating. Mitch looks alarmed. He looks at Juliet and narrows his eyes.

Mitch: “Flood in the kitchen” huh? Christ!

He makes to leave but Devyn stops him.

Devyn: She doesn’t wanna see you.

          Mitch frowns looking confused.

          Mitch: What? W-why?

Grace and Juliet look confused too.

Devyn: She says that you...are the one who might hurt the kid. Cause you have before.

Juliet stares at him, startled by this new development. Mitch looks incredulous, narrowing his eyes.

Mitch: You believe what she says? She’s not...moral, ok, she will lie to get what she wants!

          Devyn: And you’re perfectly level-headed?

          Mitch looks angry.

Mitch: I don’t have time for this.

He tries to force his way past but Devyn stops him.

          Juliet: Devyn-

Devyn: Jules if she’s telling the truth-

Grace: And what if he is?

          Devyn looks at her.

Mitch: There’s no damn “what if”! Look unless you wanna be responsible for the death of a newborn child then you have to get to her right now!

Devyn hesitates. Mitch decides to chance it and barges past Devyn. Devyn attempts to stop him, but Mitch has already made it out of the door. Devyn, Grace and Juliet quickly hurry after him. “Grow Up or Blow Away” by Metric begins to play.

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

Guests are sitting around eating as Mitch storms through looking determined. Mark and Aura look up their eyes widening.

          Mark: Crap!

He hurries over attempting to stop Mitch.

          Mark: Hey-

Mitch pushes Mark aside, causing him to fall back into one of the empty tables harshly. Devyn, Grace and Juliet enter as Mark hits the ground, knocking back several chairs. They, and the guests present all look shocked. Mitch approaches the door. Aura looks from Mark to him.

          Aura OS: Stop!

The lyrics of the song begin. Mitch halts suddenly, gasps filling the room. He turns very slowly toward Aura stood a few feet away from him. Juliet, Devyn and Grace watch looking serious. Aura is pointing a gun at Mitch.

          ‘Floating the room
          Two by two
          From the womb
          To the holiday
          There is no holiday’

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Callista is moaning in pain as Gael clutches her hand. Tegan gets up from next to Callista and hurries over to the door as she hears raised voices. She peers through the glass window. Her eyes widen as she witnesses the scene. Behind her Callista cries out. Tegan turns and looks at Gael.

          Gael: Don’t you dare leave!

          Tegan exhales.

          Tegan: Wasn’t planning on it.

          She hurries back over.

          ‘First double-cross her heart
He wants to start a family
          Needing something to go on’

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

Most of the guests have disappeared. Mark is staring at Aura and Mitch from the ground. Mitch shakes his head at Aura.

Mitch: I only wanna see my wife.

          Aura raises her eyebrows momentarily.

Aura: Uh huh? Well she don’t wanna see you-

Mitch: You don’t know what’s going on here!

He speaks angrily and turns quickly to Juliet.

          Mitch: Tell her!

          Juliet hesitates.

‘If she weren't writing in blood
          She'd bring him her jokes
          A new liver
And a shovel for the mud’

          Juliet: Uh, look, Aura...things are a little...complicated.

Mitch: My wife is giving birth in there, and when she does, the baby is not gonna be safe!

Aura looks conflicted. Juliet looks serious.

Juliet: Are Gael and Tegan still in there.

’ If he were not knee-deep in mud
          He'd bring her his drugs
          He'd get her a typewriter’

Aura hesitates and then nods. Juliet exhales and then looks at Mitch.

Juliet: It’s ok, my staff are capable of dealing with this.

          Mitch looks at her, unconvinced.

Mitch: Before or after they shoot me?

Juliet looks at Aura who still appears resolute.

          ‘If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?’

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Callista cries out in pain as Gael and Tegan stand next to her, trying to prepare for what is about to happen.

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

Callista’s cries are heard. Mitch looks worriedly at the door to the kitchen. Juliet stares at Aura who still looks absolute.

          ‘Blue to gray
          Grow up and blow away...‘

Juliet: Aura look I gave you the gun for emergencies, and I know that...that this has many characteristics of...an emergency, but you have to let this go.

          Aura frowns.

          ‘If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?’

Aura: I ain’t just gonna let him walk in there! You saw how scared she looked when she thought he might!

          Mitch: “Scared”!?

          He shouts looking angry.

Mitch: She is desperate because she thinks she’ll lose her chance!

          ’ Blue to gray
          Grow up and blow away...’

Aura looks confused and glances at Juliet and the others. Devyn realises he has to act quickly. He walks towards Aura.

Devyn: Aura, keep him out here, we’ll go in and make sure that the baby’s gonna be all right. Ok?

Mitch looks angry. Aura stares at Devyn and then nods. Devyn turns to Juliet and Grace who are already walking towards him. Mitch looks at Juliet for help but she avoids eye contact as she walks round him quickly.

‘Nobody knows which street to take
          He took the easy way’
          What was the easy way?’

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Devyn, Grace and Juliet hurry in to arrive on the scene. Callista is pushing, shouting in pain. Gael and Tegan turn looking somewhat relieved to see the others. Tegan has placed several towels in preparation for the baby.

          Gael: Where’s Mitch?

Juliet: Aura’s dealing with him. Is everything ok?

Gael: If by ok you mean completely out of our control, then yeah.

Juliet: But I mean normal, right?

Gael shrugs. Juliet looks concerned and walks up to Callista.

          ‘First double-cross her heart
He wants to start a family
She always thought she would not.‘

          Juliet stands next to Callista.

Juliet: Callista are you feeling anything...different?

          Callista grits her teeth, screaming.

          Callista: I don’t know!

Juliet takes her hand and winces slightly as Callista grips down. Juliet turns to the others. She raises her eyebrows for some kind of assistance. Devyn quickly walks around to the end of the table and looks slightly shocked by what he sees.

          Devyn: Uh, wow ok uh...

’ If she weren't writing in blood
          She'd bring him her jokes
          A new liver
And a shovel for the mud’

          Juliet: What do you see?

Devyn: It’s uh, not pretty, but I think it’s normal. From an avid ER viewer’s perspective.

          He looks uncertain.

Devyn: Though I think...she has to wait till the contractions are 60 seconds apart before she pushes?

          Callista: (shouting) Already happened!

Devyn makes an expression as if to say “oh”.

‘If he were not knee-deep in mud
          He'd bring her his drugs
          He'd get her a typewriter’

Callista grits her teeth as she pushes again. Devyn’s eyes then widen as he looks down.

Devyn: Oh, oh, we’re having a baby, we’re having a baby!

Everyone else looks alarmed. Tegan rushes round.

Tegan: Oh my God the head! I see the head!

Juliet looks at Callista clenching her hand.

          Juliet: You’re doing really good!

          Callista cries out.

          ‘If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?

Callista: (shouting) For the love of God I need an epidural!

Everyone looks uselessly at her. She screws up her eyes in frustration. Juliet winces in pain as her hand is slightly crushed in Callista’s grip.

          Devyn: It’s coming! Almost there!

          ’Blue to gray
          Grow up and blow away...‘

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

Callista screams can only be heard in the background. Aura is still pointing the gun at Mitch. He looks worriedly in the direction of the kitchen as the screaming gets louder. Aura does too. Mitch makes a break for the door. Aura turns quickly and looks angry. She shoots. Mark’s eyes widen. The screen goes into semi-slow motion.

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Juliet turns in shock as she hears the gunshot.

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN DINING AREA

Mitch narrowly dodges the bullet which hits the wall near him as he bursts into the kitchen.

          ‘If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?
          Blue to gray
          Grow up and blow away...’

          CUT TO:

          INT. HAVEN KITCHEN

Mitch runs into the room. He comes to a halt as he stares at the scene. Callista is leaning back, Gael and Juliet on either side of her. She breathes heavily but is no longer in pain. She stares at him. He stares also, but not at her.

          ‘First double-cross her heart
He wants to start a family
          Her body is the baby.’

The baby, half-wrapped in a towel, cries in his arms, struggling slightly. Everyone looks at Mitch. The song slowly fades out.

          ‘If this is the life
Why does it feel so good to die today?
          Blue to gray
          Grow up and blow away...’

          FADE TO: WHITE

          FADE TO:

          INT. ROOM 13, HAVEN

The caption says “one day later”. Callista is sat on a chair in the room, the baby in her arms, drinking from a bottle. She sighs.

Callista: God I forgot how boring this was.

Devyn is sat across from her. He looks serious.

Devyn: Are you gonna be all right?

Callista looks up. She nods. Devyn stands. Callista frowns slightly.

          Callista: You’re going?

Devyn hesitates and looks at her.

Devyn: I don’t wanna be around you. I just wanted to check the baby was ok.

          Callista frowns.

Callista: Look, neither of us wanted to lie, but it's just what we've become. But I genuinely believed that my baby was gonna be in danger. You don’t know how he gets, you don’t know the damage he can do. It was the only way you would keep him away.

Devyn stares at her, a hint of anger in his expression, but also confusion.

Devyn: And that all goes away suddenly? You can trust him again, he can trust you?

          Callista sighs.

Callista: We have something you can’t understand. Sometimes I hate him, but deep down I know he’ll protect me way after all of you give up. If the baby hadn’t come I’m guessing you would’ve done already. I saw it in his eyes when he walked in yesterday: the baby’s important to him; and he knows the baby’s important to me. He just...also knows that I can be as unpredictable as he is, sometimes. That’s why he lied like I did. It's the lie we always tell. We never had a son but...now we have a daughter, and now I know she's safe.

Devyn stares at her, still looking serious. He shakes his head.

Devyn: You know I still don’t, understand you or him or your relationship. I don’t want to. But I gotta know that she...

          He indicates the baby.

Devyn: ...isn’t gonna get in the way of whatever you have.

Callista stares at him. She shakes her head.

Callista: She was never gonna be. We both see that now.

Devyn looks at Callista; someone who is still a mystery to him. Callista looks down at the baby and exhales. The door opens. Callista looks up. Mitch walks in. He smiles a little at Devyn, but Devyn doesn’t really smile back. He glances at Callista and then Mitch.

Devyn: I’ll leave you two to talk.

He walks out. Mitch watches after him for a second but then turns to Callista closing the door.

          Mitch: What did he want?

          Callista sighs.

Callista: He wanted an explanation like they all do.

Mitch nods and walks over to her.

          Mitch: Did he get one?

          Callista: What do you think?

She looks sceptically at him. He exhales, nodding, and sits down on the bed directly behind Callista. Callista looks down as she gently rocks her daughter. The baby yawns, causing Callista to smile a little. Mitch watches Callista from behind.

Mitch: Where do you think...we go, now?

Callista raises her head slightly staring into space.

          Callista: I dunno.

          Mitch hesitates.

          Mitch: We’re...equal.

He goes out of focus as Callista opens her mouth slightly. There is a pause.

Callista: I have something to tell you.

Mitch stares at her, looking calm.

          Mitch: You do?

Callista turns her head slightly, but cannot view Mitch properly due to where he is sat.

Callista: After we agreed...to stop. I...

Mitch’s eyes flicker to the ground.

          Mitch: I know.

Callista’s expression changes to surprise. She shifts in her seat to look at Mitch. The baby breathes audibly and Callista moves carefully so she doesn’t wake her.

          Callista: What?

          Mitch smiles a little.

          Mitch: It’s all right.

          Callista stares at him.

          Callista: You’re not...angry?

Mitch looks down and then gets up. He kneels down behind Callista’s chair and puts his hands on her shoulders. He begins to stroke them. Callista turns forwards, looking surprised by his actions.

          Mitch: No, sweetheart.

He continues to stroke her skin. She closes her eyes looking relaxed, but also surprised to feel her husband’s hands. Mitch stares into space.

Mitch: You know, cause they deactivated my conviction chip, I went out. I bought some clothes for the baby.

          Callista smiles a little.

          Callista: You did?

Mitch smiles. He gently kisses her shoulder.

Mitch: Yes. And then...I saw a man and his girlfriend arguing in an alleyway.

Callista opens her eyes, her smile stiffening slightly. Mitch kisses slightly higher up on her neck.

Mitch: They reminded me of us. From before. But...futile.

Callista’s expression begins to change to concern. Mitch’s fingers run down her back to the neckline of her top. Mitch stares at the back of her head.

Mitch: We were always made to go on. Not like...them.

Callista’s brow narrows as she grows more and more serious with every word. Mitch stands up and walks around in front of Callista. She stares up at him. He smiles, almost kindly, if he had not just said what he had. He looks down at the baby and smiles more widely. He crouches down and kisses her on the forehead. He then looks up at Callista. “Keeping the Dream Alive” by Freiheit begins to play once more.

Mitch: By my count...it’s 27 for you. And 28...for me.

Callista stares at him with contempt. He smiles, a new darkness in his eyes.

‘The game will never be over
Because we're keeping the dream alive’

Mitch: Let me know when you’re back in the game, Cal.

He stands up slowly and walks away. Callista stares at him, enraged. He closes the door behind him.

‘The game will never be over
Mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm mmm’
