  • To his Coy Master: a Doctor Who poem

(with slight apologies to Andrew Marvell)

I've danced with humans through the skies
They loved me with their foreign eyes
Though Rose was soft and near and warm
I craved the dark electric storm
She held my hand across the stars
But never gave me fire like ours
    My nemesis, my newfound foe
My other self, I can't let go
You've walked in blood so very far
But I can love you as you are
We've lived so long, played cat and cat
No game can matter after that
Let me protect you through the night
I cannot lose you now, so fight
You stubborn bastard, change your face
This is our first, not last, embrace
Without you space is just a gap
The world is dying in my lap
But you refuse and here it comes
The fading shudder of the drums
