Challenge #7: Results

Apologies for the lateness ? but here are the results of my challenge (number 7).


Winner: Nocturne by tangent

This fic had a great atmosphere, almost a poetry to it - one that I didn't pick up on at first. The opening made me a little dubious, actually, because the demons felt like they were from a different universe, more Pratchett than Buffyverse somehow? but as the fic went on, it all clicked into place. Buffy-off-the-rails was also the universe-off-the-rails. Like the Wish, the shift into badass place for the slayer is mirrored in/caused by the world around her. I liked that. I also liked how this dark Buffy was a silent Buffy:

The other thing, the thing that grew more and more apparent as her foes fell was how silent her movements were.

There's something very disturbing about an unquippy Buffy. This badassness is not a pose at all ? she's not trying to impress or seduce like Bad Faith does. Maybe that makes her even hotter? Anyway, this fic is true leather pants stuff.


Runner up:

Aissy's was an interesting take on the challenge, with a real authentic sense of the AtS characters and their conflicts, fears and destinies (foreshadowy goodness!), but I would've liked to see Fred's When She was Bad moment go a little further into the gritty, nasty territory, I think, since she's such an innocent character.

There were some other strong fics in the mix, but I think tangent's and Aissy's got the heart of the challenge best.

There were a lot of entries and they were all quite different, I thought, which was nice. So it's cool to be runner up!

I didn't want to make Fred too nasty - especially too dark - because she's about to get proper dark, and I wanted something a bit more like her. But it could have been fun to do too. (no, no, can't afford another 25,000 words right now )

Anyway, glad you liked it, like I said before, I really enjoyed writing for this challenge.

Oh I forgot to say, really enjoyed your writing of Spike, Aissy - segues nicely into his role in the After the Fall

And yes, tangent, unquippyness conveyed nicely (without her sounding dull).

I wanted to say, also, that I really enjoyed all of the fics, and the ones that didn't win...well, it wasn't down to lack of quality as fics in any way, more that tangent's and Aissy's worked best for me in terms of the brief set by the challenge. Happy to give feedback on the others, too - want?

EDIT: Ok, going to go ahead and starting feedbackin the others, want or not

So, KingofCretins's fic... very strong fic, but I felt like it wasn't quite as much a fulfillment of the challenge...perhaps cos it felt almost too canon? Like...the rails were still there, and Xander was on 'em, even though in a bad place. Maybe that's influenced by the place XAnder is in now in season 8, where things are being totally blown apart for him... so it takes more to take XAnder off the rails post season 7 than other characters?

And, while I may mock Seven...he was my Doctor. Or one of them at least. And he did have Ace, though he didn't deserve her.

I think Ace could've worked well with Nine actually. Not so much with Ten though. He needs someone a bit more motherly I think, less irresponsible (because he's a big enough kid himself). Both Rose and Donna have a slightly maternal thing going on...

And woah. That is so off topic I even shock myself.

Anyway, going to post more feedback for the other fics tomorrow or over the weekend if I get the chance...moving house so may be monday.
