  • Unkismet: a Doctor Who ficlet

An AU Doctor/Rose fic, set post season 2. Written because I couldn't get that song out of my head. And because if the Doctor hadn't come along, I'm pretty sure Rose's life would've involved taking drugs on the weekends and living a shop life during the week. And maybe a little because the Master makes me think of Human Traffic. Not that this has the Master in it. But, still. The ways the mind works, eh?

    -----
Coming up gave her a rush that seemed like it would never stop, like a swimmer pushing through the water, up into the light, rushing so fast and so far. The music rushed up with her. A remix of a remix of a song she was too young to know in its original form.

I was blind, now I can see
You made a believer, out of me
I was blind, now I can see
You made a believer, out of me.

It sounded brighter now, wrapping round her like wings of sunshine? oh she couldn't describe it. Didn't need to. She was there.

And suddenly, so was he. A thin man staring through the crowd at her. Dressed unlike anyone else in the club ? suit, tie, pinstripes. Somewhere between a rock star and the sort of teacher everyone has a crush on. Though Rose had never had a teacher with eyes quite like that.

    I'm movin' on up now
    Gettin' out of the darkness

Intense dark eyes like pools of chocolate-flavoured soul, oh she could look at them forever. She smiled, raising her arms. An invitation to come over, to dance with her. To touch.

    My light shines on
    My light shines on
    My light shines on

But the man stayed where he was, leaning against the wall. He saw she was looking over and couldn't hold her gaze. She danced closer. Everything was open, everything was fluid. He would join her, she knew he would.

I was lost, now I'm found
I believe in you, I've got no bounds

He was looking at her like he wanted her. Like he'd always wanted her. He was walking closer. She felt that tonight would be the night her whole life changed. She just knew it.

    * * * * * * *

That afternoon, the TARDIS had slipped sideways once more. Not the same parallel world he'd been before, with Ricky and a living Pete?and his Rose. This place was almost exactly the same as his own universe. Except?here, he'd never met her, and another Rose Tyler's life had kept on its original track.

He was waiting for the TARDIS to recharge, wandering aimlessly through London. He'd strolled into this club, hearing the music, wondering what was inside. Maybe looking for something to take his mind off? And it seems that I've chosen the worst possible place in this universe to do that, he thought, as he noticed her?

    I'm movin' on up now
    Gettin' out of the darkness

She was dancing like a wild thing, looking at him with those enormous eyes. Drugged up to the eyeballs, she was a sad, insanely beautiful sight. She was part of the crowd and all its jostling humanity, but looking straight at him. Eyes like searchlights, a silent siren song. Oh there was so much danger in those eyes.

    My light shines on
    My light shines on
    My light shines on

He began to move towards her. Not dancing, not walking, he wasn't sure how he was moving forwards. Just to be closer to her, just to be a little closer.

    I'm getting outta darkness
    My light shines on

But that's not Rose. That's not my Rose.

    I'm getting outta darkness
    My light shines on

With every ounce of will, he turned away from the dancing girl, and walked back outside, towards the TARDIS, and the world where he belonged.
