  • I usually find all my fics on EF. They have this recent fics feature. Every fic that has been published shows up in the recent fics list for a while. When I wake up and have had my first cup of coffee I look at the recent fic list, put stories that intrigue me on my bookshelf for later reading, and start my daily routine.

The next recommendation isn't from EF though. It was very recently published on AO3. Someone must have recommended it to me because otherwise, I wouldn't have found it. It's not very long with almost 20k words and it starts at the end of season 5. When Buffy and Spike steal the Winnebago they have sex in it (before they pick up the Scoobs) and this is a pattern that repeats itself before the apocalypses in season 6, season 7 and finally in Scotland post Chosen. I really love the prose in this story. The story is called

if the world was ending (you'd come over, right?)

and it's been written by SummerFrost

if the world was ending (you'd come over, right?) - SummerFrost - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV) [Archive of Our Own]

      Great little fic!

  • So, I was trying to rid myself of an awful sinus headache (they just come and go) and was lying in bed re-reading The Turn of the Screw. After finishing, I felt like something lighter and so I hopped over to EF to see what was new.

I was happy to see a new story by Holly called Almost Paradise and dove in, especially after reading her warning that it was a ‘dark’ fic. Well, after Henry James, I felt like a dark companion piece was in order.

It’s not as dark as I thought - but holy moly, I’m really loving this fic! I’m a total sucker for alternate universe “Where the hell am I and what have I done?” fics. Buffy’s caught in an It’s a Wonderful Life situation and this one is deeply satisfying and interesting so far.

Here’s the summary: When presented with the opportunity to magically alter the world she lives in, Buffy knows there are a lot of very good reasons why she shouldn't seize it, but figures things can't get worse. She's wrong.

Takes place in S6 Life Serial, so before all the you-know-what of Buffy and Willow.

flow, have you read it yet? I know it’s not finished, but I think it would be a great fic to add to our list. Maybe even while it’s still ongoing?

    • I'd like to recommend World Enough, and Time by tooldforthis on AO3. It's quite an ethereal read, about an immortal Buffy and Spike, beautifully written and very engaging. It's her first fanfic, and I think for a first fic it's amazing.

      • Ripples On A Hellmouth by stuffandnonsense is in my top ten list of my all-time Spuffy fanfics and I have recommended it on our old Spuffy Fanfic recommendation thread.

Stuffandnonsense has written a companion piece to Ripples on a Hellmouth called Nothing is finished. It is not so much a sequel because we are talking not only about time traveling but also about dimension-hopping with endless possibilities for different versions of Spike (or Buffy).

In this story, a Spike from a different dimension who has met time-and-dimension-travelling Buffy comes to Buffy's original dimension (in which she lives happily ever after with her own Spike).

Don't expect any threesomes or smut at all. This is not what is happening in this story. I also would recommend reading Ripples on a Hellmouth first. Stuffandnonsense writes in a league of her own. Both stories are amazing and brilliant.

I'm glad you like the stories as much as I do!

      • I have just discovered Things Present - Things Past by estephia and Marcee. It's really unique, which is rare at this stage. Loved the story, and the characters. Buffy gets pulled back in time to 1880 by the spell of a watcher trying to heal his slayer. Her essence is pulled into the body of the slayer Maeve, and Marve end up in hers. And that's just the first few pages. This one is long and plotty - and I feel like I am writing a blurb here but I was impressed.

Can we agree that the writers made everyone do and say everything with a thought to getting good ratings and being renewed. This includes everything we love as well as everything we hate.

No all human, and no pregnant guys or characters turned into children.

      • I read anything really. I suppose I would tend to pick other things over threesomes/infidelity warnings. But not strictly, I have knowingly read stories that contain those. And I've read a ton of all human and vamp Buffy. Vamp Buffy is often one of the biggest characterisation shifts you can get though, so I can understand not liking that.

I think our tastes change over time, or mine certainly have. I'll read pretty much anything, but I often won't finish if I'm not enjoying it.

      • I have no objections against Vamp!Buffy (as long as she was a Slayer or at least a Potential before she was vamped )

I think the concept of a Slayer turned into a vampire is interesting, and especially when it's Buffy.

The only kind of fics I haven't read yet are Vamp!Buffy, It just feels wrong. I changed my mind about AH, so I leave a possibility this could also change.

        • Hindsight by Toften.

I seem to be doing well in the rec department, so here is another one. It does work well as three long stories, but only the third one is Spuffy. It's another jump through time and universes story. I love those.

The Worst Journey In The World by glassdarkly. Zero porn, really great characterization, and a very interesting premise.

I think it does. I finally broke down and read the entire series, and I like it all. In this Buffy goes back to retrieve her champion.

        • I'd like to recommend another All Human fic, The Way To A Man's Heart by Dorians Kitten. Buffy bakes cakes and cookies for Spike until he eventually cannot resist her anymore. It's a fun little fic, and really nicely written.

          • I like AH fics as long as they keep most of the original characterization from the show. Do fics where Spike has become human count as AH fics? Ah, I guess not.

Along with Season Seven fics, how Spike grapples with being human is one that I always enjoy. Angel, too. Then there’s the standard “they shanshued and have no idea who they are until Buffy finds them working in a pie shop...” that can be fun as Buffy tries to decide if and when she should reveal their true past. (It’s funny how many fics make Spike out to be some kind of master chef when he almost never cooks outside of a microwave in the series).

Also enjoy the drama if only one of the two vamps shanshus and the other is either jealous or sorrowful and they have to come to terms with it.

To be honest, the only fics I tend to stay away from are baby fics - some are really good, but they’re not my cup of tea for the most part.

I am all on board with Shanshu fics, I agree it's interesting to read about Spike (or Angel) coping with being human. But that's very different from a story where they have never been and will never be vampires.

          • American Aurora

Maybe it's because he upgrades his blood with Burba weed and Weetabix. That's almost like haute cuisine for vampires ...

I have very rarely come across actual baby fics. Most of them were fics where the pregnancy is a part of the fic but not the actual raising of the kid. They always end when it gets interesting. I haven't read the Barbverse yet but as far as I know, Spuffy does exactly that in the Barbverse - they raise their kids. That's the interesting - and difficult to write - part. I am looking forward to reading a fic that tackles it.

I can’t remember the exact title, but a series called ‘Thursday’s Child’ or something close to that was really wild - through magic, Spike gets pregnant instead of Buffy and wackiness ensues. I recall Spike as very demanding with cravings.

Very, very curious as to what you’re reading! Yes, I am a snoop - can’t wait to hear your thoughts. If any of them are ones we’ve read in the Spuffy Fanfiction Discussion Group, post there!

            • Right now I am reading Return Of The Vampire Slayer by WillowfromBuffy. It's long, complex, and has a very interesting premise. The POV has some odd elements, almost a fever dream quality at times. I am definitely enjoying the process of teasing out the realities as the story unfolds - sometimes literally. I am assuming some of this comes from the comics, so I am approaching without a complete background. It's ensemble with a clear Spuffy thread throughout.

The rest of the list is:
              Secrets And Lies - angelic-amy
Prayers For a Poet - fetchingmadscientist
              Drawn To The Fire -buffyxanadqfan
              No Rest - kittenofdoomage
              Found - cupcakecute
              Guilty Soul - uncagedmuse
              Liebestod - famblichus
And Here We Go Round Again - Megan
              Flickers - Dusty
The Demon, The Witch, and The Warlock - Allospoike

Plus two Slaymesoftly stores that I haven't read...or probably haven't read in a decade - and two I added to my favorites The only one I've heard of is Prayers for a Poet..

              • In March I recommended if the world was ending (you'd come over, right?) by SummerFrost on AO3. Since then I am very slowly making my way through her Spuffy fics. SummerFrost has posted five stories on AO3 since January 2021. So far I have read don't look much like a lover (doesn't mean I won't try), which is set in season 6. Although Buffy did not die and enters a more healthy relationship with Spike than the rather toxic one we saw in the show she is still under extreme pressure and emotionally not in a good place. This fic is edgier and harsher than the first I recommended although it is still a (very) slow burn Spuffy love story.

The third story I read by SummerFrost was nothing safe is worth the drive (follow you home). This is an amazing fic. I am actually at loss for words to describe how wonderful this is. It is - again - a slow burn Spuffy love story but this time it is set in season 5 and has a more optimistic and generally a happier vibe. It's not unashamed fluff though! The premise is wonderful. When the Scoobies drive off in the Winnebago in Spiral they take a different direction and thus never meet the knights and don't end up in an abandoned gas station. Instead, they keep on driving. They visit the Grand Canyon and go to Albuquerque. They go grocery shopping, they do their laundry in a laundromat and they pass the time by listening to music, singing, playing cards, and reading Tarot. There are so many small affectionate moments in this fic, like the name for the Winnebago which keeps changing all the time because they can't agree on one. There is so much love for Xander and Willow and even for Angel who makes a cameo appearance via a phone call. And then there is Spike and Buffy.

I will have to kick another fic off my top ten favorites to make place for this one. I absolutely love it.

nothing safe is worth the drive (follow you home) - Chapter 1 - SummerFrost - Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV) [Archive of Our Own]
