  • T.V. Shows themes

Okay I was on MSN or some other news site and I saw an article about themes from televison shows and can really help make a show classic so I thought I would semi steal the idea and amke a tread about our favorite t.v. themes.

    I'll start

With Lyrics: Growing Pains... cheesefest, just like the show
gosh I am blanking right now on this category

Instrumental: Obviously Buffy and Angel themes are up there. I use to stand in my living room a jump around to the Buffy theme ( i'm sure you wanted to know that) and it is what I walked into at my reception when I got married.) I think it gives a kick butt attitude which I think overall refelcted Buffy. Yes in the latter seasons Buffy was more depressing (as was the character) but in the end, she still always kicked butt.
Angel's theme is so more slow and has a sadness about it which gives the correct feel of the show. I love how much they contrast each other.

Or if you would like to categorize by decade
    80's
Night Rider- slick, just like the car
Beauty and the Beast- I loved this show and the theme was so romantic just like the show was.

    90's
Xena and Hercules- you could feel the tongue in cheek through the music
West Wing- amazing theme; it was dramatic, strong, just like the show and the president and staff were.

    Have fun!

I actually read the article on this and I'm surprised how many shows now-a-days don't have theme songs. Heroes, Supernatural, T:SCC. And I gotta say, I LOVE theme songs. They make a series, I mean you can start singing "Save Me" by Remy Zero and everyone clicks to Smallville. Its really upsetting alot of shows are just cutting em out to make more time for the show.

Some of my favorites theme songs are from Charmed, How I Met Your Mother, Veronica Mars, Smallville, Angel, Big Love, Corner Gas and of course, Wonder Woman XD!

I hate it when there's not a theme, when watching a new show I'm always excited to see whether they'll be a theme or not.

Theme tunes are definitely an integral part of a show for me. I won't fast forward through them when i'm watching a DVD, especially the shows that have precredit teasers because they act as a launchpad into the overall experiance. Buffy is particularly good for that as is
        Doctor Who and House.

Seems there has been more focus on the shorter theme song as to not take up so many moments of the show. I was really excited to see Chuck's theme song - I think it's one of the best!

Of course I remember the "old theme songs" and can sing most of them for contests... "Green Acres", "Beverly Hillbillies", "Gilligan's Island", "Adam's Family", "Laverne and Shirley", "Love Boat", "Dukes of Hazard".

And I love the simple ones like "LOST". No words, no music just eery creepy noise and "LOOOOOOOST" making it's way across the screen.

If i had to pick some of my favorite ones would be: Law & Order, L&O CI (same theme with a twist) CSI, Veronica Mars, Friends, Smallville and Many others. When it comes to cartoon themes I love Family guy's theme the most.

*shrugs* I've always loved about Supernatural that it just has the title card and nothing else. A great theme tune is all very well and good, but what if you really hate it? Plus, if you are marathoning, sitting through a sometimes lengthy theme tune every episode can be incredibly dull. Really, it depends on the show and theme.

I love the way Midsomer Murders uses the Danse Macabre as a theme tune, but without a title sequence - they just play the music over the opening sequence of the episode without any dialogue.

See I always just grouped Supernatural with 'Carry On My Wayward Son' by Kansas and used it as my unofficial theme song. I'm sure it also helps that that is pretty much my favorite song throughout my life... but hey, it fits really well... and didn't they use it for the 'previously on...' for it?

One I really really love is the Grey's Anatomy theme which never plays anymore! I used to always love the opening credits but sadly they make the eps too long... wait.. that isn't really a bad thing is it? I guess that is a plus side to not having one

I don't actually watch it but Holby City has a pretty kickass theme tune! Also I love Scrubs, I love how short it is yet everyone knows it.

My favourite however has to be The Mighty Boosh - what a song! Come with us now on a journey through time and space... to the world of the Mighty Boosh!

Best themes ever: Faulty Towers and Doctor Who (without lyrics) and The Wire and Sopranos (With lyrics). "Gotta keep the devil, down in the hole!" and "Woke up this morning, got myself a gun..."

I love the instrumental theme to "House".

My favorite theme song with lyrics is, no question, the theme to "Monk" -- "It's a Jungle Out There".

Some stuff gets old real fast, like "Who Are You?" for CSI.

I agree about "Supernatural" having just a title card, but I don't think anybody does the "just a title card" better than on TNT's "The Closer" where it's just a black screen and white type-face that says... "The Closer", and you can still hear things happening in the episode in the background.

Actually, I'll also give "Lost" a slight edge on "Supernatural" for title cards, because it embodies the show so well. Also love the "Heroes" eclipse.

I love a lot of the ones all ready mentioned, like Charmed, Smallville, and Friends.

But another I loved was the first theme song they did for The Dead Zone (not the second). It was so wicked-cool sounding....I just loved it.

I also really loved Roswell's theme song....

I also think Angel's theme song is one of the best instrumental ones ever done.

The most memorable for me, though, has to be The Facts of Life.....

                          You take the good
                          you take the bad
                          you take them both
                          and there you have
                          the facts of life
                          the facts of life

There's a time you've gotta go and show
your growing now you know about
                          the facts of life
                          the facts of life

                          when the world never seems
to be living up to your dreams
                          and finally you're finding out
the facts of life are all about you
                          Yooouuuouuu.

Other really memorable ones: The Brady Bunch, The Jeffersons (I'm moving on up to the East Side to a Deluxe apartment in the Skyhighhigh.... ), The A-Team, and Sanford and Son

(and I know, I'm really showing my age with some of these.... )

LRae, I end up humming the Facts of Life theme song all the time. I'm only 22...i technically should not be old enough to be singing it, but I love that show.

My favorite television theme songs are mostly from SciFi shows..lol. Firefly's theme song is permanently burned into my memory forever. Battlestar Galactica's music is just so sad, yet it fits the show perfectly. Another show that I end up humming all the time is the opening credit music to Stargate SG1 (yes I'm a scifi geek.)

However, my current favorite theme song/music is the for the show "Highlander". If you have seen the show you know what i mean. If you haven't...take your butt over to Hulu.com and check it. It rocks.
