  • General Torchwood and Doctor Who spoilers

Thought we might as well have one thread for spoilers for both that aren't specific to season 2 of Torchwood or season 4 of Doctor Who (that both have their own threads).

Rather depressing news on the Torchwood front...

But their suggestion of who might be the next Doctor could be a very good choice indeed. I really rate them as an actor...can be scary too, which is interesting with the Doc, I feel.

That article contains not only some interesting information but also an amusingly liberal use of the full stop. Spoilering this just in case:

    Spoiler:

I'm really not that enamoured of Torchwood, so I'm not overly distressed about the huge changes they're making, although if the article is correct and they are getting good ratings, then it does seem an odd change to make. I think Torchwood floundered throughout its first series, and if it found its feet in the second (which I'm not sure about) I didn't particularly like what it found. For my taste, it does need radical changes (although I guess this means they're getting rid of all the gratuitous gay sexings ) but I though the format might have been working more smoothly for other people?

Mainly I'm curious about what Barrowman's going to do. Although any inclusion of Freema is definitely a good thing!

I thought the second season found its feet, yes. Not necessarily stylish yet affordably booted feet of awesome... but a lot of fun in a slightly battered and wonky way. Like the cakes you can buy just before the supermarket closes for cheap. Their cheapness is part of the goodness.

Freema as head of Torchwood definitely has potential. I was getting VERY tired of Jack, so not bothered about that. But I'm going to miss Owen - I think the situation he's in now is genuinely interesting, and I'd rather keep him around. Wonder if they're keeping Tosh and Ianto too?

The news I'm really interested in though is the idea of Robert Carlyle (sp?) as the Doctor. Begbie! Jesus, scary! But could be really good. Not my first choice(s) but a good one I think. Obviously could just be bollocks but, if true, intriguing...

Yup i think he would be a pretty good choice really, although I'd have reservations on him binging out the doctors more mercurial side. I had the same doubts with CE though and he pulled it off (although there are just a couple of dodgy moments.) I would hope he's more Three in his outlook, more gentleman adventurer, keener for action. Ooh and I would hope he keeps his accent.

I never could see it that way. When they'd peeled away the layers of badness, there only lay dullness as far as I was concerned. They never really answered any of the nagging questions that were raised by the whole set up. The dynamic in the group though did improve, which definitely made it easier viewing.

Am tired of Jack too, but felt like the whole set up was developed to rest on his ample shoulders, so am surprised they decided to get rid of him so quickly. Although I'm not sure getting rid of him would do any harm. And I like Martha, I like how competent she is, it will be a nice change of pace.

Thought the article said no more Tosh and Ianto too?

I've only seen him in The Full Monty. He's adorable there though! Seems like a very safe person to cast as the Doctor on the strength of that, but clearly need to see him in something else so I can figure out the scare potential and stop seeing him as wholesome. Like him a lot though, would not be disappointed with this choice.

I think Tennant went too far down the mercurial route, or does at times, so that could deffo be reined in for a Carlyle Doctor. The idea of a more hard-edged Doc could be interesting...though seeing him do the whimsy could have a pleasure all in itself.

I think a more self-contained less "wacky" Doctor would work for him. Ooh, imagine if you had him with his daughter as companion! That would be AWESOME. At least for a while.

My "dream" Doctor options, though, are:

            -Tamsin Greig
-Julian Rhind Tutt (whose name I can never spell, but Green Wing guy)
-That ginger dude off of Spooks

Hmm...there are probably some othres, must have a think.

And for a Children in Need Special, please can we have Johnny Depp, just once? Playing the Doctor as French (why not? Lots of planets have a France ) and making lots of CAptain Jack jokes. Cos it's shallow and silly.

Not sure why I enjoy it...the silliness of it appeals...plus the rude jokes.

Watch him in Trainspotting. And shit your pants at the thought of that man in charge of a TARDIS.

                Spoiler:
The article only specifically mentions the departure of Jack, Owen and Tosh. Then again it only specifically mentions the return of Gwen, guess they dont know about Ianto yet. So basically they're keeping the one character that I could do without and they're keeping the one actress that I have heard they have problems with. How annoying.

From all the positive comments I guess I'm the only one who doesnt like Freema then. I just don't buy her as the character at all. There were only about 2 episodes of her so far in either Who or Torchwood that I could forget she was an actress playing a role.

Yet I say all that, but am still looking forward to seeing how this pans out. Am I odd?

                  What!?

Okay, replacing the whole cast never works out. If they do that it won't even get a whole season. Does anyone remember SeaQuest? It was pretty decent until they decided to replace most of the cast with younger, better looking people in tighter clothes-then it sucked and got canceled. Torchwood has an audience-why would they mess with that? It's like the most viewed program on BBC America. Maybe they should just move over here. (EyeCandy can crash here while he looks for a place )

More impotantly, I love Jack! Torchwood, for me, is Jack. I don't understand why they would replace him-also, things have just been getting so much better. Are they simply going to drop all the character arcs and storylines they've been working on? And what about Ianto-he's my favorite and they didn't even mention him.

I'm freaking out. Please don't let this be true. I'm going to be devastated enough when Tenant stops being Who-I can't handle this too. I'm counting on several seasons of Jack/John drama.

I was having a good day right up until I opened this thread.

                    Spoiler:

I could've lived without Jack but I definitely wouldn't watch if Tosh & Owen are gone too as they happen to be the only characters I'm invested in on the show. :'(

-That ginger dude off of Spooks
Is that Rupert Penry-Jones? I've never seen Spooks (I've got the first three series and have yet to start it) but I think that's the guy. I saw him in Northanger Abbey. So YES PLEASE. He's pretty...

Yes, him! Sorry, I am bad with names. If they want another totty Doctor to replace Tennant, he's definitely up there. From Spooks, he's shown he can do lost and tragic and badass. Not sure how he'd cope with funny mind you. Not seen him in anything funny.

This isn't really a big spoiler, but..
                        Spoiler:
I heard John Barrowmans back in series 4 of Doctor Who, does anyone know if this is true?
Moss: Four! Five! I mean Fire!
Tosh: Because you're breaking my heart.
