  • What Fuels/Brings Down The Show

Well, I was getting into this in the Pilot thread, but I thought I'd bring it over here to this wonderful forum So, the question is: what's your favorite part of the s h o w? What is the worst part of the show? The part you wish were used less or not used at all.

For me, the characters take the cake. I love the interactions between the Squints and Booth so much. Brennan and Booth's conversations and chemistry are amazing! It just is so much fun to watch and see progress. I also love Angela and Hodgins interactions. Their relationship is probably my favorite and Zack's growth is a joy to watch. Cam is just kinda there. I like her and all, but nothing special, imo.

I also love the plots because, ya kinda have to. I do love the twists and turns and the sparks and humor it brings up, or the drama. Examples being Kris Kringle being killed sparks humor. The Blair witch thing last year brought Angela and Hodgins closer, imo. It really drives the show and makes them change, which most shows don't do.

What I dislike most is the science talk. I know it has to be there and there are cracks about it and how confusing it is, but honestly, it's so confusing sometimes I may have to watch a scene/episode numerous times just to see how they got to the murderer

    That's about it.

Angela and Hodgins are my main reason to watch. Not necessarily their romance. But individually each are wonderful characters. I love Hodgin's humor. And Angela's extreme sympathy and understanding in such a sterile setting as a lab is so needed. Oh and I about died when we found out her father was in zztop. Her independence and wild spirit really clicked into place for me knowing she was a rockstar's daughter. As well as I became more impressed with her empathy and understanding of others.

LOL, and I know I'm probably the only person who enjoys the science on the show, but it's one of the more comforting things when I watch.

It's just, I don't understand it. I'm waiting for Angela or Hodgins to tell me what it means, because I'm like Booth when it comes to science. I don't understand most of it If I knew what it meant, it would all be good haha.

I know a little bit. And I think that's what cool about the show. You get all this information and you have no idea what it means and then they cut over to Booth and he is sitting there like "....And?...." It's funny.

But I don't mind the science stuff because I don't feel as though it is superfluous or as if we were inundated with it.

But I also wanted to agree that Angela and Jack as characters are really great. They have such interesting and different sparks. And I love that Jack is super rich and this huge conspiracy theorist. I also happen to like Zack and I hope they do more with him in the future.

I think they cut back a lot on the science talk, yes. But, I still want less

The liberal conspiracy theorist thing is absolutely hilarious, in my mind, and I just love how they keep bring it up, especially in the first half of Season 1! I also liked the twist of him being really rich. For Angela, I love her normal self. I mean, I just rewatched 1.02 "The Man In The SVU" and I really remembered how she reacts to death and her look at it. She's the normal one, and she brings so much to Brennan and the Squints. I love Zack, too. It's fun to watch the small progress he gets. He's hysterical and his "growing up" in "Judas On A Pole" is fun. Also, him going to Iraq was a great twist and he seems to actually be growing more, which Zack didn't get a chance to do in Season 1.

Oh, yes. I definitely think Angela's perspective on life and death is another driving force of the show. She really brings humanity into the lab. And when she hurts, you hurt too. She knows she has an important job and that she is talented at it bu she so wishes it wasn't something she felt compelled to do. So I love Angela! <<-- me hugging Angie!

Well, my degree was biology and chemistry so there is a reason why I find it enjoyable.

I think they do it nicely. Other shows try to explain it to the viewer so it doesn't seem natural or feels like a lecture. Or on other shows, it seems pretentious and superfluous. On Bones, they say it normally as if they were scientists and then in layman's terms to clue Booth and the viewers in. Other shows like CSI drive me nuts.

And I love that Jack is super rich and this huge conspiracy theorist.
Me too! I like how you said this, since when I typed it, I seemed so vain. But I love how he underplays his family's wealth, but still has it at his disposal. He's almost like the squint version of Batman. But yes, I also adore his awareness of conspiracy theories.

I also love the science talk, even though I can't say I understand everything (I'm still just in High School...). I think that it would make the squints less "squinty" if they stopped talking like that. Furthermore, it really showns the gulf between Booth and the squints. Also, I kinda like how Angela gets more and more "squinty" (love that word ) the more time she spends with the other squints - like when she can tell different moulds (I think it was) apart

Moreover, I love the interaction between characters! Booth/Zach are among my favourite interactions to watch, how uncomfterable Zach is and how Booth just doesn't really get anything he says - it's funny. Of course, I'm a major Booth/Brennan fan too I like how they've in some ways switched so that Booth is more the "woman" and Brennan the "man". To me it shows that gender-roles are overrated and very often wrong.

However, what I don't like in the show is all the "toughy-feely" moral moments. I'm all for the fun, more fun I say! I love humor, and shure I can appreciate a tender moment every now and again, but I kinda feel there's too many. Often, there's two/three an episode... Maybe it's because I as a person often don't get very sentimental, but I think it's kind of wierd for people to get sentimental *that* often. Agian, my oppinion ^^

Fair enough. But if you worked with death and murder and betrayal and pettiness and other ugly things around the clock, you might be more willing to wax sentimental. There has to be some sort of balance in their lives, I think. Otherwise, what are they left wit but the depravity of man?

But I hear you. Sometimes it does a little too sappy.

Ha! What a major spelling mistake I did on "thouchy", ah well..

Yeah, I can understand that they might feel like they need to "let it out" instead of bottle it up or just shut off compleatly to remain "human". Desptite this, I think they could've worked it out another way - like they have to go to counseling every once in a while as a part of the job. I don't know really...

Well, Booth and Brennan do got to counseling! We get Sweets in season three. And then Booth had to see Gordon Gordon in season two a few times.

But I would hate to watch a show where everyone has to go to therapy every week.

But don't worry...I totally understand what you're saying.

OK, not that I'm really burning for this cause, but when I said "go to therapy" I didn't really mean every episode Furthermore, I like psychologist, no idea why! But I like the way it is on Alias - they go sometimes. I know both Booth and Brennan's gone to therapy, but the rest hasn't (as far as I know). Personally, I think therapy is a very good thing. It doesn't necessarily mean you're having problems - just talking to a person you don't interact with scocially could be a good vent - and who doesn't need to vent. I'm totally getting off subject...

Just remembered another thing I love about Bones. The special effects. I once heard (I think it was on the LotR extra material) a special effects guy saying that the highest prais a special effects guy could get was if somebody said "What special effects?". I so feal that about Bones! Usually with TV-shows I'm bugged by how bad the special effects can be sometimes (I love Buffy, but *come on*!). I'm really not on Bones. Take Angela's 3D-simulator - it's always cool and "real-looking" (although I'm pretty sure there's no such thing). I never sit and thing "Ugh, that looked bad!". So thumbs up for Bones!

Althought I can't always understand what they are talking about, I still quite love it because I am trying to puzzle it out (It's better when I figure it out before anyone else on the show lol, makes me feel smarter). Like NCIS, I can't understand half of the maths stuff and I am like "What?" like Booth.

But I still love the show, like last Thursday we saw the epispde "Headless witch" and it was good, and it's interesting to see Angela scared of the video (And Bones looking disgusted, and what's her name, Tamara? Holdong Booth's hands) it does show they are only humans too. Althought I don't have them on episodes I got a quite few favourite episodes (With other crime shows or stuff silimar to it I don't really have a favourite episode, I guess because those shows are more based on crimes then relationship like Law * Order)

Actually, one of the things I do not like in the show is that 3-D hologram simulator. I just find it....silly. If it was a simulator on a computer than I would much more willing to accept it. So as far as effects go, I don't like that so much. It distracts me, to be honest. :/

Really? Huh... I really think it's cool. I haven't really seen any 3D simulator that looks "credible" on any other show. Furthermore, out of a film pov, I can definetley see the uppsides to this and the many downsides to having everybody crouch over a computer every episode. This was they get more room to pace and stuff

I don't mind the science talk either. I live with a trainee nurse and consequently get anatomical talk at home some times as well - put it this way I know what a distal phalange is!

For me though the real bonus of this show compared to other similar procedural shows is the focus on the characters rather then the murder of the week. I started to watch it because DB was in it, but carried on because I care about the squints and what happens to them. The Booth/Brennan interaction works wonders for me because I can relate to it because of a completely one-sided obsession I once had with a work colleague!

I don't think that Brooth should be brought out anytime soon, as I think it will change the dynamics of the show and everything works well at the moment.

If I could change anything I would want more storylines for Zach. I want to know more about why he is the way he is, what happened in Iraq and when he's going to get a girlfriend (or boyfriend, cos that wouldn't bother me in the slightest). We know more about the other characters and it seems sadly lacking that Zach has missed out so much on character developement.

I agree. I love Zach and I really think we see to litte of him on the show. He's always there but there's not so much of him - if you get my point. I love it in season one - Tha Man in the Fallout Shelter - when we got a glimpse of his family. I wish that they could have a story that forced him to interact with them again. I know he talks about meeting his family sometimes, but I want to see it too, hehe. Furthermore, as ciderdrinker said, I'd really like to see him in a romantic relationship. However, I can see why they've delayed that piece of his character "evolvement" or what you say. I mean, if he were to be in a romantic realtionship could he really stay the extreme scientist and "only facts" type of person he is now? Or, would he change and become more like Brennan and (especially) Hodgins - a hybrid (so to speak).

I've just thought of another reason I love this show - the kick ass ongoing storylines of the cannibal, the gravedigger and Max Keenan.

The Cannibal plot is very interesting indeed and I think it's fair to say has got everyone wondering who he/she will be come season finale (of which I'm certain that will be the subject of the finale, although that really depends on how long the strike goes on for I suppose). I'm beginning to be of the opinion that the Gravedigger and the Cannibal could be the same person - dunno why really, but it was stated that we will get more gravedigger story this season and as yet there have been no talk of him at all, so it seems they will wrap these two stories up together.

Does anyone know when it's back after the holiday hiatus?

Yes. Zach. I really love Zach and I love everything that goes on with him. I love him competition for girls with Hodgins and how he's so defensive of Brennan in "The Girl In The Fridge", but also wants to become her boyfriend! I also loved the whole Iraq thing with him and I really, REALLY want him to get to see his family. I could care less about him in a relationship, I want to see him with his family.

I love the Cannibal story a whole lot and the way it's developed with the whole Apprentice thing. And the ending of "The Knight On The Grid" is so revealing...if we knew who that guy was Luckily for us, there's like four cannibals. I think three, actually. And so far, we know two: the guy in the closet and the old man. Here's hoping the last one is someone we know.

The Gravedigger story must be returned to. End of story.

I love Brennan's family past. In fact, "Judas On A Pole" is my second favorite episode because of that reason: Brennan's path. Also, great actor and it's just awesome to get some backstory that's meaningful for the main character, which doesn't usually happen in these kinds of shows.

I don't think there is anything I dislike on the show, I love all the characters espcially Brennan because she finds the human part of her job quite hard which I find entertaining to watch, I also love her dad, I think he is the funniest character. I find all the characters loveable though. I've never really given much thought to the science talk, its like watching ER or something and not understanding the procedure.

I also agree they have to bring the Gravedigger story back, cos that is probably the only thing bugging me lol
