First reaction, is that this is a top 5 episode of the show so far. Kristen Bell is going to bring so much to this season, I can tell. And, with some of the stuff they set in motion here, Season 2, despite some early issues for many viewers, is going to wave to Season 1 as it jogs on by.
First, the only real bad -- the Hiro storyarc. I enjoyed its shortness, but it felt out of place in this episode.
The Claire-lessness and the Maya/Alejandro-lessness should be pleasing to many people -- see, they do know there are more characters, they just can't put every arc in every episode.
I definitely like the Parkman-Petrelli team so far. And, Matt's Dad is every bit the badass we were led to believe, a deceptive and evil man. His power is truly terrifying, he is like Orwell's Room 101 in person with the dreams he can capture people in. Seeing what Matt and Nathan went through really makes me upset for poor Molly -- she is probably back in her house with Sylar running amok.
Mohinder is already folding, incrementally, compromising a bit at a time, and that's unpleasant to see. Great to see Niki (or was that Jessica?) go all super-strength. I thought they'd put the Jessica identity away, but Bob, for the first time, really, confirms the MPD angle on the character. I wonder if she is going to be put in as Mohinder's partner, a new Claude to pair with his new Bennet.
Monica is quickly becoming a favorite character. I was a bit disappointed to learn she didn't have Sylar's same power, but was greatly relieved that it's not something so completely implausible as "learns what she sees on TV" -- she learns what she sees, period. Plus, any time someone does a kip-up, it's a great episode. Her power is extraordinarily cool, one of the best on the show. It's of the same basic fundamental idea as Sylar's and Peter's, but operates with different limits and different advantages. I was pleased to see Mohinder turn up at her door, because it means she's going to be important.
And, the main event. First, poor, poor O'PubGuy (can't remember his name). Loyal to his family (literal and figurative) to the very end, a tough guy unwilling to be intimidated or insulted, and gets FRIED for it. Poor Caitlin, also -- she has no idea what she's been drawn into. Worse, neither does the only person who can help her through it. I'm glad they didn't have Peter waste a lot of time not opening the box, because that would be ridiculous. I look forward to him having his memory back, though. Ooh, one small complaint -- Peter may have Isaac's powers, but he's *not* Isaac -- Peter was painting in stick figures a few months before. I know they want to continue to use Tim Sale's art, but it's really hard to fanwank or ignore Peter suddenly being that artistic.
I figured Kristen Bell must have the electricity and that that's where Peter got it. Glad to see I was right. She makes a formidable adversary, and I love that she wasn't being calculating at all killing O'PubGuy, she was just being capricious. She's a petulant kid, and that rocks.
