Has anybody seen any of the new series, Damages? I saw the first three, missed the next two, think I'll wait until a DVD release.

It stars Rose Byrne and Glenn Close in what's quite similar to the "Devil Wears Prada" format, of Rose Byrne waiting on the bitchily intelligent, scene-stealing boss (Glenn Close and Meryl Streep are even similar-looking actresses) but in Damages, the stakes are much higher, given the money involved in the case, and the viewer knowledge of Rose Byrne's plight six months from the main storyline.

The suspense is there and the twists are good, particularly in the first episode. Rose Byrne and Glenn Close both make for much more layered lead characters than Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep did in The Devil Wears Prada, mostly because of the sprawling nature of a tv series (as opposed to the containment of a film) and the nature of the plot makes it more serious. The rest of the cast is good -- Tate Donovan is a breath of fresh air and Ted Danson is excellent.

The legal side makes me think that most of the writers' law expertise actually comes from watching other legal shows, but the running story is far more important. Unlike other law shows, Damages seems to be heavily plotted, running through one crucially important case through the series, and revealing more of the tantalising grim future ahead of Rose Byrne as we see the case develop. It does make you wonder whether the show is planned to last long -- is a show like this made to survive to another season and beyond if it is focused entirely on a tightly wound plot?

In any case, I just thought it would be interesting to see if anybody else had seen it, on a forum where a show like this is not really part of the popular genre.
