  • Gossip Girl: Season One Discussion

Since I've seen several people mention it here, and because I'm hooked, I'm starting a thread.

I'm liking the plot so far. I don't think Dan and Serena are over, though, apparently in the book their relationship was just as brief, but since this is TV they'll probably drag it out a bit. Which is good, because I really liked the two together.

Speaking of Dan, so far, he's probably my favorite character. I love how he's so unimpressed with the "glamorous" lives of his classmates. Also, if Cedric the Cabbage Patch Kid ever appears, he will surely become Gossip Girl's Captain Oats.

Serena is another character I like. Yeah, she did sleep with Nate, but she's grown since then. I love that she's become an outcast, it'll be one of those things that will draw her back to Dan. I hope they let the Blair/Serena feud go on for awhile, at least until the end of the season.

I also like Jenny, she's so young. I can't wait to she how she handles with being in the middle of Blair and Serena's feud. She's showed she likes both of them, but Blair has a hold of the Queen B status at the moment.

I wanna like Nate, but he seems like the type of character who you wanna like, but he just does stupid things. Like, telling Serena to meet him in the hotel suite. Wouldn't meeting later or calling each other work just a well? We'll see, I'll probably grow to like him. I'm can see he and Dan eventually becoming friends since, Dan was the least hostel with him, unlike...

Chuck. He's defiantly the guy everyone will love to hate. Right now, he's just a gigantic trouble maker, but he has lots of potential, which is good.

Now, on to Blair. She's such a bitch. At first, I thought it was right for to be after finding out about Nate and Serena, but when she brought up Dan's Cabbage Patch Kid in front of everyone, I realized, she's just a bitch. I hope she continues being one, because I love it.

I liked the Lily/Rufus stuff, but it's kind of weird. There's Rufus/Lily, Dan/Serena, and, I'm sure one day since, apparently, Eric was originally Serena's older brother, but know he's younger, Jenny/Eric.

I can't wait to see Kati and Isabel (Blair's lackies) do something beside play with their phones. Knowing Josh Schwartz, they will. Summer Roberts started out the same way on The O.C., by Season 3, she was practically the lead female and in Season 4 she was.

Also, I noticed this episodes and 1.01 take place over like 3 days, I wonder if this will continue, which would mean they could drag out Senior year, which is what I'm guessing they're in, for like 4 or so seasons. Since, I doubt they'll throw them into college after Season 1, or 2, if they split the year up into two season.

Anyway, I'm loving this show. I hope it gets picked up for a full 22 episodes, instead of the 13 ordered.

Meh. I've watched the first two eps so far. It's okay. I like the way music is used. I guess that is to be expected with a Josh Schwartz series. I think it has potential but it feels ever so shallow to me. Of course, that may be the whole point.

I like Dan as well. And Serena. She has definitely changed and I like the way Blake Lively portrays her. I am hating Chuck. Not because he's such a royal dick but because that's all he is. He has no layers whatsoever. And two date rape scenes inside one episode? That's pushing it a bit, imo. And while I don't care for Blair a great deal I do like that there is a brunette bitch for a change. Too often blondes are plopped into that role.

As for all the love triangle action, I read it's about to get even bigger. I didn't read the books but apparently there is a character, Vanessa, who was a girlfriend or childhood friend or something of Dan's and she will be coming into the picture as well.

As for a 22 episode order. I would totally bet the CW will greenlight that. This is the biggest thing they have to a hit as far as new shows go so I imagine they will keep with it. Plus, it has a built in fanbase for the folks who followed the books.

Lastly, I enjoy hearing Kristen Bell's voice-overs. She does them really well. Although, sometimes they feel out of place or forced, usually when the show is going into commercial. :/

Hmm...I can be shallow and like really ridiculous things. But man, I really hate myself for liking it. I have to say that I enjoyed the pilot more than The OC pilot in some ways, so maybe I'll grow to shamelessly love it

I am hating Chuck. Not because he's such a royal dick but because that's all he is. He has no layers whatsoever. And two date rape scenes inside one episode? That's pushing it a bit, imo.
I know! I usually love the douchebaggy characters of most varieties. He was actually pretty entertaining for me, up until the all the daterape.

I love Serena. She's just a likeable character for me. Blair is really annoying and bitchy. I have mixed feelings about her. Jenny is...eh. A bit desperate. But she's young. It's to be expected, right? Love Dan, partly because he totally looks like Justin Chambers at first glance But he's the lovable loner character.

CANNOT FREAKING STAND NATE. I really just cannot watch many scenes with him. He always sounds like he's trying to say something deep and I find him a bit dull. I don't usually go for his type of character though...not that I can think of, at least.

Lastly, I enjoy hearing Kristen Bell's voice-overs. She does them really well. Although, sometimes they feel out of place or forced, usually when the show is going into commercial. :/
Aside from Nate, I think that's what annoys me the most. I don't mind them usually. But those parts that feel forced just ring in my ears and make me cringe. I love KB and everything, but god, I could do with less of the voiceovers (even if they are supposed to be a big part of the show or whatever )

So, I'll stick with the show. It might grow on me a little more.

Well the seond epsiode was really good and I love the show. In the pilot I fell in love with Jenny I thought she ws soooo cute and nice. Now she is starting to annoy me a tad. Like she is sooooooo naive. The promo was not wrong about that. I just dont get her some time. I still love the character but she's starting to make me mad. I think she will become cold harted towards Sernea and all up Blair's but. OH MY GOD! Chuck is the most ugliest creature I have ever seen. First off he's NOT hot! He's soo weird looking and its funny how he thinks every female wants him and that not the case. I just cant wait to see what happening next week and I loVE KRISTEN BELL'S VOICE, Fits the show greatly and I love how she says the character's first name initial. LOVE IT!

So, I find myself not resisting Gossip Girl's charms once again

          Episode 3: Poison Ivy
          Spoiler:
Usually, I'd totally hate the Serena-type of character. Or maybe I'm just expecting her to turn into Marissa Cooper. But I'm really liking her. I love what she did for her brother, with Blair's whole Ostroff stunt. It was totally cool of Eric to stand up to Blair. That mother of their's is a a witch and a half though. Goodness, I sometimes think how close Serena and Eric are is creepy (but understandable at the moment), but I mean they have to be with a mother like that. I loved that look of triumph of Serena's face when they decided that Eric could have the dayAnd man, that girl could really sell a school uniform. She made it look like something I'd wear normally

Poor Dan. It does suck to see all these other people being *handed* opportunities. I loved all that banter between the Humphreys. I thought it was a cute family moment I was glad to see him talking to Serena again. They are a couple where I actually like both of the people, and actually like them together. I could love them. It's actually a bit sweet

There was that line from Chuck about Blair's wit being underestimated or something. That's because she's a bit predictable at times. I still love her and all her bitchiness though That line...what was it, scholarship or something for sluts? It was so funny that it had Serena laughing! It was just something I'd laugh at because it's just that dumb. But you know, I do feel bad for her. She and Chuck could start the douchey people of the year club, and I don't have too much sympathy for bratty over privileged kids like that. But with the way her mom treats her, and her best friend ups and leaves without so much as a goodbye (and then to find out WHY she left...) it just sucks. I thought we knew about her dad though. I remember when I read about him in Ausiello, I sort of laughed thinking, "Well, I knew that!"

          Oh, and next week's episode:
          Spoiler:

Poor girl. That must suck...I'm not really expecting a truce or anything though. Even if they decide to call one, that just cuts down on so much of the shows drama!

I have to admit that I found the field hockey scene this week depressingly funny It made me laugh to see Blair trying to be tough against Serena, while Serena was towering over her looking ready to smack her down.

One thing I have to say is that while a lot people don't seem to care for Nate, I think he's not so bad. I think deep down he is a good guy and that brings a nice balance to the show since Blair and Chuck are live evil! () and Serena and Dan and Jenny aren't. So my point being, I liked Nate in this episode. He doesn't go out of his way to be mean like the evil ones do.

Ugh, Blair. I like how Eric did stand up to her and totally brought her down a notch.

I severely dislike Nate because he bores me. I did appreciate what he did for Dan though. And that he can grow a set when he really needs to stand up to his dad. He's a decent guy, but just...not interesting to me at all.

                OH MY GOD!!!
Last nights epsiode was soooo great. I love how Blair and Serena went back and forth with each other on the bitch fights. I can totally see how Blair feels but she took the problem to another level. At least Serena tried to be civil about the whole situation until she got sick of Blair's crying. Blair took a very low blow at the end of the epsiode. I love how Serena's brother made Blair look so stupid. LOVE IT!!!

Okay I'm deeply ashamed that I watch this show but I watch so many high drama shows that I guess I need something a little bit shallow every now and then. Damn you, Josh Schwartz, for turning your shows into such delicious guilty pleasures!

I couldn't agree more with you, JJ. I did like him a little bit better in this episode on account of what he did for Dan but generally I just find him very dull and not interesting. Plus I really dislike people who say they have read a book but haven't really done it so I got pleasure out of the scene where the author asked Nate what he thought about his book and Nate not knowing what to say.

I really like Serena and loved how she protected her brother in this episode. Eric telling Blair how things really are was pretty damn cool, Blair annoys me to no end!

I'm a bit bugged by the fact that this show does not have much in the way of male eye candy. Okay Dan looks okay but way too young for my taste. The only guy I really find attractive is Dan's dad. Plus the fact that he is an ex-rock star is very attractive to me. It is funny because I didn't find this actor (Matthew Settle) handsome on Brothers & Sisters at all but here on Gossip Girl with the beard and the rockstar look, I find him quite handsome.

I concur. There is a lacking of male eye candy. None of the guys do it for me. Dan's dad is probably the closest for me as well! Chuck is yucky. And Nate is too pretty boy. And Dan....just not my taste. So what's the deal with the guys?

Blair annoys me to no end too! Get over yourself, you know? So what? Your best friend slept with your boyfriend. Be pissed. Don't be vindictive. And why is she putting it all on Serena. Nate is guilty too. Stupid girls.

Then again, The O.C. also did not have that much in the way of male eye candy, at least not IMO.

I agree. I really don't get that, she is mad at Nate for like two seconds but goes on a major warpath against Serena? Makes no sense to me, it takes two people to cheat. I usually like bitchy characters on TV shows but Blair just rubs me the wrong way. Oh well, maybe she will calm down a bit now, given the end of this week's episode, and maybe even reach a truce with Serena.

Blair is someone I can love to hate .. but Chuck, I just plain despise his character.

YESS!!!! I totally agree with you on this. There are no cute boys on GG. I think chuck is ugly and just gross! YUCK! And he scares me. Dan is cute but not sexy and not my tyope neither. Nate is just yuck beacuse he looks so yuck I dont know he's just yuck. Like you said Dan's father is the hottest guy on the show.

So Ausiello and Kristin confirm the show has been picked up for a full 22 episode season. I told you it was a shoe-in. This kind of show is right up the CW's alley and I have been seeing tons of teenage girls across the net gushing over it. This seemed an inevitable actuality. So good news for the fans and (us folks who find it a guilty pleasure. )

                              1.04 - 'Bad News Blair'

I hated how Serena ditched Dan twice. Though, it's forgiven since they seem to be going on their first, actual, date. I really liked when Blair and Serena were going at it, but I kind of like them being friends. As long as they have fights every once in awhile.

Dan, how great is he? Last week he gave Nate advice to impress that Dartmouth guy, despite the fact he wanted to meet him. And this week, he gives Blair, someone who he said he hated in the same episode, advice. Hopefully all the hurtles for Dana, or Danerena, are over. Oh, wait, never mind, I forgot about someone yet to show up, and I'm sure Gossip Girl will refer to her as V.

Blair, I really think they're slowly introducing an eating disorder storyline with her. Every time we've seen her eat, she just picks at the food, or off someone else's. Anyway, I felt really bad for her, her mom is kind of a bitch. I've got to say, I love scene between her a Dan.

Wow, Chuck has layers, maybe, there's actually a somewhat decent side to him? He gave up his signed (by Babe Ruth, right?) baseball to save Nate's ass. I'm really glad that he's not as one dimensional as he seems.

Nate, I really don't know what to say, he yet again did something stupid. I'm sure this will continue as he searches for himself.

Also, I really glad it got picked up for a full season!

Yeah. But I forgive her because she was trying to be a good friend and there was never anything particularly selfish about it.

Yes, her mom is crazy. But I love that actress and I haven't seen her anything lately and I thought she was good. But I think a lot of the parents are....I dunno....They just have skewed priorities. Now that we have seen that Nate's dad drained his fund we understand that he wants his son with Blair because he thinks it will help him financially. WHat a jerk.

Wow, Chuck has layers, maybe, there's actually a somewhat decent side to him? He gave up his signed (by Babe Ruth, right?) baseball to save Nate's ass. I'm really glad that he's not as one dimensional as he seems.
I was sure they would have to redeem at least a little bit soon. He was just too despicable. And he still is. But he has a dedication to his friends, so that's something.

It frightens me how addicted I am to this show. Totally loved the corniness of B & S's rekindled friendship. Especially all the rawrs and posing.

And these people are horrible parents. Just...completely terrible. I think Lily and [Nate's dad's name] need a good bitchslapping. I only left Blair's mom out of it because she at least makes me laugh from time to time. The only one I actually like is Rufus and I don't even find his separate storyline very interesting. The whole Kirsten/Jimmy thing...um, Lily/Rufus thing isn't doing anything for me. I just like him as a character and as Jenny and Dan's dad!

Sad for Dan, and I know that getting ditched yet again must suck. But as the viewer, I'll forgive Serena because again...I enjoyed the stuff with her and Blair. And I hate how much I want her clothes, because I actually find them a little more on the glam side than I'd usually like and not as, um, creative (okay, messy and colorful) Anyway...

Oh Chuck. I thought last week when he and Nate were waking up together totally killed me, but his exercise wear in this episode was like the shot just to make sure WOO! They're making him deep. I actually wouldn't have cared otherwise, and just enjoyed him being an idiot if it weren't for the date rape thing.

Okay this was a really enjoyable episode! I liked the Serena/Blair friendship scenes a lot and I thought it was awesome when they stole all the clothes at the end.

Grrrr how much do I hate Blair's mother? No wonder Blair is so bitchy and callous at times with a "role model" like that. I hated how she treated Blair and how she manipulated her emotions. And the whole thing about her not wanting for Blair to put on weight, that made me just furious! Parents who teach their kids these kind of "values" should not be allowed to be parents IMO.

On the other hand, seeing that Blair has such a horrible mother allowed us to see a vulnerable side of Blair and I'm glad we did because it really made her much more likeable. It's nice to know that even a girl as perfect as Blair has her insecurities and issues. The scene between Blair and Dan in the hallway was just great!

LOL! Chuck's hideous exercise wear in this ep made me howl with laughter! He just looked so ridiculous! But I'm glad that they are adding layers to his character and make him a bit less despicable. He seems to really care about Nate and actually seems to be able to read him quite well, so that gets him a few brownie points.

Am I the only person who's really fallen for so many relationships/dynamics within this show?

Dan and Serena have SUCH great chemistry that it makes me smile and feel all happy inside. Everytime they're together, I love the show more and more. Though they love to keep throwing kinks in their relationship but even those are entertaining.

And then there's Rufus and Serena's mom (whose name escapes me at the moment). Those two ALSO have soo much chemistry that it blows my mind. Especially in this week's episode! I truly hope that the CW doesn't force the writers to give these two the axe since they are an older couple on a pretty-young-thing show. I just wanted them to kiss when she was leaving but, alas, they did not. So disappointing.

Then there's the Blair/Chuck dynamic that brings a smile to my face whenever they share scenes. The two most wicked rich kids in the city working together is awesome. I hope they pair up more often, even if the Blair/Serena spat is done.

And then there's the Blair/Little Jenny Humphrey situation that keeps me so pumped. Jenny's getting closer and closer to becoming the new Blair and I love it. Especially at the end of this week's episode where she talks back to Blair and walks out all Blair-like. A truly great scene, in my opinion.

I'm definitely shocked that I love this show so much but it really IS addicting!

It is a little addicting. I hate that. I've already made fanart for the show and still have another one in progress! The caps and promos are so pretty!

There is some good chemistry but I'm not gung-ho over any particular pairings just yet. But I must admit that I do quite like how Jenny is crossing over to the dark side. Should make for some interesting dynamics later.

I do like the Dan/Serena pairing the most, though. Mostly because those are two of the most accessible characters on the show and therefore, easier to relate to and root for. Blake Lively grows on me more and more every week.

I also like that the show doesn't shy away from alcohol and drug use because in reality--rich or not--that's what a lot of teens do. So I am glad that they incorporate it in without it being highly gratuitous.
