Faith is taking her dress off. The Lady dress. I guess this is the final issue to Faith's arc where she probably rejects Lady Faith and adopts Slayer Faith again.

Wow first the Issue 8 cover and now Issue 9 as well and Issue 6 hasn't even come out yet!
I love this cover and not because it shows Faith's chest exposed, although that is def a plus, but it is amazingly done as well. I wonder why Faith is burning her dress, perhaps she went to far into her role; somehow linked to the previous cover with her strangling Buffy? Not suggesting that she's actually killed her, but maybe she wasn't liking what she was turning into. Or maybe it is time to kick Lady Savage's arse the Faith way.
I expect it's symbolic. To me it looks less like she's burning the dress and more like she's burning and the dress doin' okay. Not sure what that means for Faith...could be bad.
Oh and yes...she does seem to be at least topless... Boys put your tongues back in your mouths please... You're getting the thread all soggy.

Val
That was my first thoughts aswell. Well it looks like its gonna be freaking amazing no matter what!
Gosh, you're grim, Val! I'm really hoping here that you're wrong and she's standing behind the flames, well out of harm's way...
Actually, I didn't realise it was the dress initially, and since it was black I thought maybe it was a leather top, so my instinct was that she was saying goodbye to the hard-ass version of herself, like she's come to some kind of peace...
Knowing how much Joss loves to torture his characters, I now suspect Val is right! lol. Poor Faith...
She does appear to be in the flames doesn't she? I think Faith is going to go through a really hard time, perhaps burning the dress is symbolic of Faith burning any chances of being the kind of person she never got to be; a princess. Faith is burning because the mission has taken its toll, I still think the entire thing is extremely unfair towards her. Out of all the people they could have chosen they had to send her to kill a slayer? Throwing it in her face much?
Seriously though...who's going to stand topless in a bonfire? Even Faith occasionally shows more sense than that. It's a symbolic thing. If it weren't her hair would be all crispified. I've had more than a couple of run ins with fire...hair's the first thing to go. Smells bad too.
I would consider a ritual purification of some sort. Moving from one state of being to the next. Fire is often seen as cleansing metaphorically. The fact that she's holding the dress out suggests to me that she is indeed looking to leave that behind. The nudity indicates that she's leaving what she was and passing through empty handed (so to speak) to something else entirely different. There's also shades of honesty in the nudity. Truth of self...hiding nothing... It's a very pagan image actually.
Maybe it's a flashback to that alligator/preacher day
The pic looks much more like Faith than the others have, good stuff.
I so was thinking that ... would be a bit of an exaggeration saying it was just a hot day though, wouldn't it LOL!
I too think that it is just symbolism of Faith throwing away some side of her, I'm thinking its a sort of Faith like Baptism, burning away all that evil because water just won't cut it (just look at the other cover ). I'm thinking it's Faith embrassing the good in being a slayer and trying to get rid of her hate.
My first impression of the pic was Faith losing her clothes and being resigned to hellfire. Maybe it's supposed to be another one of her nightmares, like the ones she had when she was in the coma. Didn't she have to sort out what was happening in her mind before she could wake up? If the pic is symbolism, it could mean that Faith once more has issues to deal with, to say the least.
Are you sure this is the cover for issue 9? I found it on the Dark Horse website as a download, but the comics available for preorder only went up to issue 8. I tried finding it on Jo Chen's Myspace page but with no success. Also, the dimensions of the image seem to be slightly odd for a comic book cover. They certainly don't match with the images of other covers on display.

The darkhorse website doesn't always place the comic as available to preorder when it is still far away from coming out. They surprisingly already have up to Issue 8 out this early on, but Issue 9 doesn't come out until November so it is probably to early to put up for pre order.
I've just figured out why this appears wrong to me. It isn't the cover, just a part of it. If you look at the bottom right you can actually see that part of the picture's been cut off. I'm not certain, but it looks like someone else behind Faith is also discarding a dress.

I see what you mean but it is possible that, that is just the bottom Faith's dress that is blow behind Faith as it burns. The image does seem to be cut off so perhaps it'll make more sense when we get the whole picture. Although if it turned out someone else was also burning the dress it appears it must be very important to the story if they aren't wanting to show us just yet.
