  • Buffy Issue #20 Cover

    Hey

LJ just posted the new Buffy Issue #20 cover as well as editorial from Scott Allie about the process of making Btvs and everything that is happening.

    http://community.livejournal.com/new...46.html#cutid1

The cover is amazing and incredibly sweet and just makes me fall in love more and more with this season because we're back to quality Buffy/Xander/Willow action. Great, great cover.

Very cute. Is this the issue where the penciller is the artist who was set to draw the animated TV series that never came to be? I forget his name....

      I love the cover,
I really hope that we will get more quality time for the trio.

I swear I thought it was the real Sarah, Nick and Alyson doing a promo shot for S8, the likeness is awesome!

Jo Chen has outdone herself, yet again. I swear, it's so hard to actually diferrentiate the show with the comic books because the covers are so realistic and also the art inside is just amazing. It's so difficult to actually think that Jo Chen creates these covers using her imagination, it's like she's got a great grasp on how each person would have posed and stuff.

Also like the way it looks like we're set for quality Buffy, Xander and Willow action, which has been fairly scarce this season, I mean, we've had Buffy and Xander and Willow and Buffy, but hardly and Willow and Xander or any of the three together.

This cover really reminds me of the time (forget which ep) they all watch Bollywood movies together and deconstruct them. Though other telly watching moments are less comforting.. Restless, for example.

I love that bit, Wolfie. I think it was "Reptile Boy"? Buffy and Xander lying on the bed, Willow sitting in front of them while one of them braids her hair and the other unbraids it?

I know Allie said that this is an homage to Norman Rockwell, but I can't quite place which one it is. Or, rather, how the characters have been situated. Is it three children in the painting, or a family?

Excellent cover! Great hail back to more innocent days of the Scoobies. So many events have transpired since then... *sigh* You can never recapture those sweet moments of youth.

I looked on Norman Rockwell's website but didn't find a particular painting to which they referred. Perhaps they are elluding to the "painting style" of Chen. It seems very "Rockwell-like".

Holy s**t, this looks like a cover for Watchtower (Jehova's Witnesses' magazine). Also reminds me of those soviet photographs entitled "Young Pioneers are studying the works of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin".
Allright, allright I actually do get the cuteness too

Yup 'Reptile Boy' when Buffy is braiding Willow's hair as she and Xander sit behind Willow who's drinking from a fruit bok I think? And Willow's translating what's happening in the movie for them whilst they speculate going to the Bronze and bringing in their own tea bags. Very cute scene, and it reminded me of this cover as well.

And Weredog yup this is the issue where they are supposed to get the artist from the animated series. I'm guessing Issue #20 is the issue when-

                      Spoiler:
Buffy revists her high school years. Though how and in what way hasn't been made clear.

I was totally thinking of that scene from "Reptile Boy" too when I first saw the cover. And also of the scene in "The Replacement" when Buffy and Xander tell Riley and Anya how they and Willow watched a movie about witches with a cauldron... Ah, just cute.

And I think when Scott Allie refers this cover as a Rockwell painting, he means Rockwell's "Triple Self" (link). "Triple Self" has an artist paint himself by looking at himself in the mirror just as Buffy is watching herself on television. I think that's what he means... Hmm...

I like this cover. It reminds me of the beginning of "Reptile Boy" when Buffy, Willow, and Xander were watching that foreign film. It accompanies Scott Allie's average day message very well, sort of like showing a day with the Scoobies too. Probably a slow day for them, of course.

Really stunning cover. Considering it's based on a Rockwell 'vibe' it's a shame that the 'father' is missing, i.e. Giles. That would have topped it off beautifully for me.

what is this cover about though?? Does it relate to the actual storyline? At first I thought it was in the time of your life arc and that buffy was a cartoon on t.v. in the future because she went down as a historical figure or something. I thought that'd be funny and the cute looks on buffy, willow & xanders faces look like their getting a kick out of it. But it's right after the time of your life arc so it's not in the future. Any speculations???

Scott Allie said the issue hasn't even been written yet, actually, so the cover only relates to it in the broadest sense. The writer, the inestimable Jeph Loeb, tailors his story to the person who'll be drawing it. Allie said that Loeb can't start until they get an up or down vote by Sarah's people on the penciler (he said also he didn't want to reveal the name of the penciler they're trying to get approved so we didn't get our hopes up -- I'm hoping its Tim Sale, also inestimable, who works with Loeb a lot on other stuff).

i would absolutely love it if we got canon comics that perhaps fill in the first 3 seasons. the comics written at that time were fairly... bad. and actually at the end of the series they went back and wrote in some AMAZING year 1 (pre-sunnydale) stuff. i'd love them to go back to that stuff the way the animated series was supposed to be episode 7.5 (basically, season 1 while buffy knows that angel is vampire + dawn).

there's actually some fun comics that gives what if scenarios for what seasons 1-3 would be like with dawn. a lot of the retroactive comics show the with-dawn versions of the stories. i'd love to see more of that.

interestingly--some of the better written comics have actually been canonized. the one with yuki, the 2-year vampire slayer who died around 1800 and was turned into a vampire by the master... you see her in a lot of the "tales of the slayers" slayer line-ups. jane espenson also did quite a few comics--the mayor's-ghost and buffy/angel-mysterious-season-6/3-meeting ones come to mind.

but yeah... it would be cool if we could someday get a leak of the 4-minute animated series promotional video (with all the voices but smg's!).

"If there is no great glorious end to all this, if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do."
"Nothing in the world is the way it ought to be. It's harsh and cruel. But that's why there's us. Champions."

You know, my first thought went to the blonde on T.V., too. Then I saw that Buffy was in front of the T.V. with Willow and Xander and I decided to put off my confusion for another time.

                                        Just thought I'd post Jo Chen's comments on the Issue #20 cover;

Since Scott Allie, my editor at Dark Horse, posted my painting for the cover of issue #20 as part of his Buffy editorial, it's probably okay that I post it here for your enjoyment.

As Scott mentioned, Joss and Jeph Loeb and the gang were going for a Norman Rockwell feel on this one which I did my best to capture. Rockwell is a fave of mine and although he didn't receive much respect from other "real" artists during the time that he painted many of his now-iconic Saturday Evening Post covers, he well deserves his current reputation as a truly wonderful illustrator and painter.

In any event, I hope you enjoy my Buffy #20 cover preview. Alyson is making me hungry for popcorn. Gotta run.

                                        Wonderful cover and wonderful woman
