  • Scoobies and One Offs -- Best Couples We Never Saw

The Buffyverse is full of great one off characters, really clearly developed small roles that stick out. Obviously, a lot of them got killed off, and pretty much all the rest just weren't seen again. Which ones do you think could have actually been a good couple with our main characters? Are there any others?

I voted Spike and Sunday from "The Freshman"

I think that this would have been a rather comical pairing and certainly would have been a lot more interesting to play out than Spuffy in the later seasons. I think that the interactions and Spike would have been amusing. From what we saw of Sunday she is more than capable of taking care of herself more than the likes of Harmony, or Drusilla particularly in the terms of physical fighting. So I think it would be nice to see Spike with another vampire who would be able to hold her own against him and be able to somewhat clam him down.

I also think that the two of them plotting together to conspire against Buffy would be quite fun to watch. I think that the pair of them would have been quite an interesting pairing to see Buffy go up against especially since we have seen Sunday kicking the crap out of Buffy in The Freshman and Spike holding his own against her on multiple occasions. I think that if the two came together as big bads they would actually have been quite fun villains for Season 4 more so than the likes of Adam, who as a villain kind of bored me.

I also would have liked to see Spike interacting more with Sunday gang. Perhaps have him try to take control of it with a level of dominance eventually beginning between Spike and Sunday for control. I definitely that a love hate relationship between the two could have made for great viewing.

I voted for Buffy/Richard and Xander/Nancy because both Scoobies presented great chemistry with these guest stars. It's almost ashamed neither Richard nor Nancy made a second appearance, I thought they're chracters could have explored Buffy and Xander in ways Spike or Anya couldn't. Whoever this Richard actor is, he is a decent, genuine actor. Way better than Marc Blucas. I wish these two would've switched roles. I wish anyone would switch roles with Blucas, but I'm gonna stay on topic here.

I think it would've been great if they would've brought Nancy for "First Date" instead of album-plugging mediocre-songstress Ashanti. Although, I'm not sure I they could've worked the "and she was a demon" bit with Nancy, but I'm sure the writers could've worked something out. Possessed, maybe?

Anyhow, one more point: Xander/Katrina and Willow/Katrina didn't click for me, but when I read it, I simultaneously thought of Xander/April and Willow/April. Man, would that have been great to see in an episode. Willow with a sexbot: that's event television right there.

        I voted for:
        Willow/Percy -- plausible, with good chemistry and some adorable interaction;
        Buffy/Gage -- Sarah Michelle Gellar and Wentworth Miller is yum, plus he definitely seemed like (one of) Buffy's type(s) (or a combination of them);
Buffy/Owen -- just because he was so sweet (although I admit Buffy wouldn't tolerate him beyond a week or two, at least not at that age).

(set made by Francy for me)

I voted for a few, but Buffy/Gage is the one that sticks out as being likely to work. I thought they had great chemistry while she's following him around, and then with her 'sex appeal being on the fritz'... and the guy is bright enough to actually ask her to walk him home! And he waved to her from the pool, that was adorable. I think Buffy dating an athlete would have been a natural, as long as he wasn't a complete tool. That's why I also thought of Hogan Martin, who seemed to be the genuine article in his short scene in "Earshot" in which he gave Percy the business about his complete sentence.

Exactly! YUM!!!!!!!!!! They would make the hottest couple ever. That's why I think they would've been the perfect couple. Plus us girls would get some more eye candy at least for awhile anyway.

Question though KoC, how come you didn't put Xander/Buffy on here????!!!! I mean they weren't actually ever a couple or was this just like a guest star with main actor type poll.

Just main characters with minor characters, exactly. I'm pretty sure Nick Brendan has been second billed in the credits for the entire televised series, unless he was third billed until Aly moved to the back of the credits.

                I voted Buffy/Gage, Buffy/Richard, Xander/Nancy.

Buffy and Gage always stuck out to me. I think those to could of worked for the rest of Season 2 and Season 3. Plus, Buffy's love interest are always so macho (Two Vampires & an Army Guy). It would have been nice for her to date a damsel.

Buffy/Richard would have been interesting to watch because Spuffy was so dark. So, it would of been interesting to watch Dark!Buffy try to have a normal relationship.

Xander/Nancy could of worked, if the episode ended different. Her boyfriend lived, but was injured. I'm guessing she nursed him back to health, eventually leading to them getting back together.

I don't think Gage would have *stayed* a damsel -- there'd have been no point in keeping him in the dark about vampires having been bitten by one, and he was an athlete.

Xander and Nancy's chemistry was nice, and it could have worked, but there was this sort of... desperate edge to both of them. I'm pretty sure "she's not calling me" was less about Ronnie being back and more about crazy people with weird faces punching each other and giant worms.

That just made me laugh, coz it is Went and coz it is accurate.
I picked Buff and Gage, because back then when he was just known 2me as Buffy guy, I wished he was in more eps.

Also Nancy and Xand because I thought it was more likely to happen than the rest. (Now, not including buff&Cage coz of the points others made)

I hope you remember that Gage is a, uh.... well, let's just say he likes to swim extra-more.

I too bought into their connection. It felt very instant for some reason. Xander just seemed to have been on the same page with Nancy in a way that he and Cordelia or Anya never happened to have been on. Not that I'm demeaning the two, they were great.

Spike and Sunday would've been hilarious. Wouldn't have lasted, but would have been fun as a bickering couple - she's like Harmony but with more backbone.

The only one of those I can actually see working is Xander and Nancy. Pity aobut the whole worm ex boyfriend issue. The Hellmouth ruins yet another relationship before it gets a chance to start.

                        Who's Hogan Martin?

Hogan Martin was Sunnydale's star basketball player, seen in "Earshot". He complimented Willow on her great tutoring of Percy.

Still none the wiser. But, am rewatching from the start so soon will come to him no doubt.

Re Willow...Willow/Percy would be fun to see with vampire Willow...her keeping him in a pain dungeon

Wolfie, these pictures are Hogan Martin --

                              Hogan and Percy

Hogan, worrying if he's answering Oz' "survey" question about pressure to be perfect correctly

I thought of a character that I should have included... RJ Brooks. RJ wasn't consciously doing anything wrong, he just was a smug kid. Seemed like a nice enough guy, really. Even if you don't think he and Dawn would have worked (he and Buffy, heh), do you ever wonder what happened to him? Particularly, what did Buffy ever do about him? The shooting script all but says that they had sex, and on screen, it's less likely but still possible -- but they definitely had rounded second and were trying to beat the throw for a triple. Buffy had to... say... something to him at some point, didn't she?

That would've been a good couple to put on here. And NO! She didn't need to say anything to him. When you see him in the hallway you just look straight ahead or just look at the ground. Honestly how many of us actually went to see the coulselors let alone see them roaming around the school? There was no need to address the situation. When awkward things happen, just block it out of your memory like Joyce learned to do so many times.

Yeah, but shouldn't she worry about controlling him? I mean, he's pretty much going to be totally in love with her after that, especially since... well, it wasn't a kiss, what happened. And he never knew about the jacket -- he thought she really liked him. I mean, shouldn't she be afraid he's going to stand outside her office holding a boombox over his head?

Why would she be controlling him? I could understand him being infatuated with her cause yeah, those muscles Wolfie mentioned in your Buffy Feminism thread might make him want her more and more. I don't think that would mean she was controlling him though. I think I'm just misunderstanding the controlling him part. Plus she's the slayer. She's had so many boy troubles at this point I don't think an obsessed teenage boy standing outside her door would be too much trouble. As for the boombox over the head, that sort of thing only happens in movies.

I meant controlling him as in, controlling the story. Keeping his mouth shut. Making sure he doesn't start blabbing all over the school. Heck, it's almost implicit that she *must* have, there's no way he'd have kept his mouth shut about that particular school-wide wet dream. He couldn't pose *her* a romantic problem, but a professional one. And, I was using hyperbole, but wouldn't she have to do something about the guarantee that he would make a lot of appointments to see her, would try to ask her out, etc?

Ah I get it now. Even if he did start blabbing all over school, do you really think anyone would believe him? I mean having SMG as your school counselor, I have a feeling there would be many of those rumors, none of which would be true so no one would really listen. If he kept on making appointments or something she could always just turn him away. I mean it would look a little suspicious to have a student always signing up to see the counselor when there never seemed to be anything wrong with him. Who know's maybe she was in charge of making appointments with kids. I know our counselors at my school will find you in class and get you to make appointments and such. Therefore she wouldn't need to see him.
