  • Buffy 8.12 "Wolves at the Gate" covers

New covers for the Drew Goddard are out

    Jon Foster cover

    Georges Jeanty variant

    Plot blurb --

    Spoiler:
Acclaimed television series writer, Drew Goddard (Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Alias; Lost), takes the reins on Season Eight with his four-issue arc titled "Wolves at the Gate." The gang (yep, Dawn too) travels to Tokyo where they duel vampires with unusual, yet strangely familiar, powers.

Familiar powers? Wolves? I think this is our Dracula arc

I am excited about this issue.. and I've always loved Drew Goddard.. I have to say though.. though I do love the cover.. Jo Chen does Buffy a bit better.. and did she change her hair style ? She hasn't looked like that for a while. Still amazing cover.

    EDIT:

Anyone notice Xander's face is put on a woman's body?
    Hmm..

That does seem strange.. and makes me actually worry just a tidbit about Xander now...

As I said on Darkhorse, I like both of these very much. Very nice composition, and for a change I like the variant.

Those covers are definately a little odd :| Nicely done though. And Xander's head is on a womans body! Whats all that about Seems like a good arc though, cant wait to read them

yeah, lol. the woman's body on xander kind of pops out--or they're going for a sumo-size samurai with moobs (man boobs) thing. i liked jon foster's first cover (buffy vs. twilight) better.

btw, there are two newish angel panels.
          Spoiler:
(one of angel crashing through a door in vamp-face...)
nobody seems to be checking them out.

I agree! I don't know which I like better... I usually go with Chen because of her grasp of the actors faces for the characters. But Foster's work is...Okay. It's not Chen. I may have to go with both covers again. I have two Jeanty covers - oops - actually 3! I had to have this last cover with the nod to the Avengers!

I think Chen has started her own comic now - I saw it advertised in this last issue of Season 8. So - no more Chen covers at all???

Yeah I think they are going for the Sumo look there - but you are right Xander's got moobies!

Hey Nile - make sure you post that Angel cover over in the After the Fall spoiler area if you haven't! I would like to see that!!

Are we getting a werewolf and vampire story for this one?? No offense to those who watch anime but I'm not crazy about Foster's vamps. They are bordering on anime - looking.

Oh wow those are awesome! I have to send these to my Japanese friend I got into Buffy. This looks like such an interesting story... does Dawn walk to Japan? Be good to see some vampire slaying also. And yep, Xander looks odd.

(the ats panels are posted... but only one person seems to have noticed--good for you, wolfie!)

perhaps dawn gets normalized before this arc... especially since she's supposed to reveal what happened to her soon.

Sick! I am so happy we're getting vampires! In the past 9 issues, our main villains have been government folk, witches, warlocks, slayers, demons, and skinless guy -- it's great that we finally have vamps as the the big bad(s)! I'm excited. I love Goddard's work. He wrote some of the best episodes of season 7 (Selfless, Conversations with Dead People, Dirty Girls.) Oh, and Foster's cover is meh-meh. It's not bad, but it's definitely not Chen. Jeanty's cover is a very 50/50. Buffy looks great, but what is up with Willow and Xander? A part of me will is petrified.

Really? I read interviews with Whedon and Chen respectively where they said that she's taking a break, and that this break was scheduled before she began the first cover.
What's her new comic? I haven't heard anything about it.

Hopefully this means Dawn is now person's size. Otherwise, a giant walking to Tokyo would be ridicules, though, a panal of Dawn coming towards some Japanese citizens with them pointing up and yelling, like on Godzilla, would be hilarious.

Maybe they'll be going into Satsu's background some. They're in Asia and Satsu is Asian so it'd be a perfect chance to see where she came from.

You just made my day right now. If that isn't the funniest imagery, I don't know what is!

But yeah, I agree with you, I think that means that Dawn will un-super-size herself. Isn't there a plot blurb on DarkHorse that said that Dawn reveals her giantness to Xander in 8.10? Maybe they fix it then or in 8.11.

                        ME TOO!!! VAMPIRES!!!! NAAAAAASTY!!!

Love Drew Goddard's work! First Buffy and then my absolute favorite - LOST!!!

He wrote one of my favorite LOST episodes - "Outlaws"

It's called "Other Side of the Mirror". It's a manga she did she had released in Japan but this is it's new release outside of Japan. She draws quite a bit of anime.

Speaking of Drew Goddard.. apparently he wrote "Cloverfield.." a new sci-fi movie coming out this January that's gotten a lot of publicity (produced by J.J. Abrams (Lost)). I cannot wait to see that movie.. now knowing that our very own Drew Goddard wrote it.. I am so excited!

Okay yeah not my favourite cover, Chen does it better, but still pretty darn good.

The blurb sounds interesting, I agree with King, I'm thinking Dracula. Familiar powers, vampire and wolves in the same sentence are pretty big clues. Though I'm surprised the whole gang is going, I thought it was supposed to just be Xander and Dawn.

Well, I can't say I love either cover but I think the Jeanty one is awful... just look at Buffy's face. And Willow and Xander's... At least the Foster cover has a bit of scary surrealism in the drawing and red-pink colouring.

But yeah... the Chen covers really are amazing looking... sigh, goodbye.

                                Jeanty's cover is funny.

I miss Chen too. Foster's cover is good, but it doesn't have the same quality as Chen's covers did.

I wonder if the wolf is related Twilight (or maybe himself). Twilight wore three belts tight around his waist. The wolf is wearing four.

I'm kind of disappointed by this news, because except for the wolf thing there's nothing new (:

Weird. I love Chen's covers (most), but I'm loving Foster's just as much so far. His style is awesome and different, love the curls he uses.. kinda art nouveau. Andhe hides a lot of detail in them.. can see lots of vampires (I'm assuming) etc.

Buffy's eyes look kinda red.. wonder if she is meant to be looking sad.

Samurai Buffy? Wins. And the first cover is very enticing too, hurrah. All looks excellent.

I hope that Dawn is till giant for this arc. Giant-Dawn + Tokyo = Leg-en-dary. Still wondering if bits of that Drac tales of the Vampire could be cannon after all though. Kinda curious how the Xander Dracula interactions might be. I get the impression that Dracula actually likes the guy. So who knows.

Still I want Chen back ASAP. Her new comics does look cool though. Think I would prefer her for regular art duties instead of Jeanty, but most people like his work so...

Eh, I'm sure he's involved somehow.. but I'd be banking on Dracula (wolves + vampires = Dracula.)
