  • Giles the traitor?

    Hi everyone

After recent discussions in another thread with kingofcretins and after looking on the darkhorse forums I can't help but wonder about Giles this season. On the Issue 7 cover Giles clearly has something on his mind, almost looking as if he is hiding something from Faith. Is it possible by retire Giles actually means to have Faith killed? There is something not being said here and I think Giles is in the middle of it, is it possible he is a traitor? Anthony Steward Head always wanted Giles to go dark, perhaps Whedon finally realises it could be a good idea?

    Thoughts, feelings, speculation?

Well, Giles DID seem to have power over that big demon from the first or second issue, so he has someting up his sleeve, but as to what I am uncertain. Maybe he is turning evil. Maybe it was the First? Only Joss knows...

I doubt Joss would have the First show up any time soon after the evident lameness of it the prior season. I was actually thinking about this scene and in this case I think Giles is more or less doing what has been asked of him. Buffy tells Xander to copy Twilight's symbol to Giles and evidently passed on what happened to Giles with the demon ambush. Giles appears to be meeting with the demon to figure out why the demons were in that church when it seems apparent they had an agreement with the slayers to keep to themselves; basically he seems to be helping out Xander and Buffy here.

Really? When did Buffy ask Xander to copy the symbol onto Giles? (And if he did, Giles should be careful getting symbols carved onto his body, let's not forget the Mark of Eyghon people :P)

No, Buffy told him to send the symbol to Giles... early in Issue #1, before Buffy and Alpha Team even get back to the BHC.

I don't buy into there being a traitor story -- Dark Horse forums are a place of randomly throwing BS theories against the wall and repeating them so often people assume it must actually be based on something.

Giles talking with the demon was basically them conferencing on the new threat, Twilight. Giles says that he and the demon are very much not on the same side, and that there is a battle to be had, but that it's at the time and place they choose, and that they won't be led around by third parties.

I think Ethan was right about one thing. Giles will always be Ripper. Whenever Giles is faced with a problem involving something that is superhuman, his solution is violence and possibly murder.

            Spoiler:
In the case of "No Future for You," he's involved Faith, which is very inhumane considering Faith's past and how she needs to overcome it.

Giles isn't a traitor, he just isn't fit for the job of Watcher anymore. It was fine in the early years when he was being a father figure to Buffy, but now he's regressing to his old self and he's taking a lot of innocent people down with him, and he's using his position as Watcher as an excuse to do so. If he didn't have that job to hide behind, people would see what was really going on with him and probably want to lock him up in place where they could watch him 24/7.
            Insert witty quote here.

There are a lot of factors that backs up this theory.

The fact that Ethan could of helped Buffy against Twilight. When there is Ethan there is Ripper.

The new preview of No Future For You and cover shows Faith and Buffy kind of conflicting again. Maybe Giles has turned them against one another?

Buffy and Giles were torn appart almost completly by the end of S7.

Impy, those don't back up the theory, they presuppose it. Buffy and Faith are perfectly capable of getting into a dust-up on their own, or as part of a plan, and many, many other things besides being manipulated by Giles.

The traitor thing is, so far, completely without foundation from anyone associated with the comic. Just something someone threw against the wall at the Dark Horse forum.

Perhaps traitor is to strong of a word, my reasons actually came from our discussion in the other thread rather than the darkhorse forums, the same kind of conversations were just evident there. On the Issue 7 cover Giles seems to be hiding something from Faith, Faith looks very proud but Giles looks anything but. Almost as if he knows something bad is going to happen or that he is leading Faith into something bad but has failed to tell her exactly what.

I personally hope they make Giles more friendly again, like the Giles we saw in Chosen. I was sick of the way his character was treated in season seven. I like that he thinks about the big picture but I also liked how fatherly and caring he could be, we haven't seen that side of him in a while. I'm betting on some good Buffy/Giles interaction in this new arc which should be good- unless they are fighting again.

Giles #7 resembles The First/Giles in "The Killer In Me". Maybe you are on to something Vampmogs.
