Well watching season 1-3 I noticed that Cordelia seemed secretly jealous of Buffy sometimes. There were parts in the series where Cordelia gave Buffy dirty looks. Also when Buffy was gone after season two Cordelia stepped in and helped out the gang (out of her character) Even though I know she had grown by then but still out of her character. Then when Buffy got back she backed off. I don't know if that's a good example but that's the only one I can think of. Do you guys agree?

I think that Cordelia was jealous of Buffy because Buffy had friends who really cared about her, Angel as a boyfriend who was in love with her and the adults in Buffy's life; Joyce and Giles who took care of Buffy. I don't think that Cordelia wanted those people as friends, boyfriend or parents but she wanted people around her who cared about her.
Cordelia was always lonely (until she went to LA), there were always people who wanted to date her of be her friend. But those people didn't care about her, didn't knew her and wouldn't be there for her the moment she really needed them. Her parents were probably shallow people who gave her fancy clothes, beautiful cars and pretty stuff ... but we never saw or heard much about her parents when she went to LA, except one phonecall of her mother in the beginning (she was 18 years old at that point). Cordelia had also every episode a new boyfriend until she started dating Xander, boys who dated her because she was pretty and the cheerleader captain, not because they liked Cordelia. You can almost say the same for Xander, he dated Cordelia but it was clear that Cordelia was in love and Xander was not.
Well Doyle actually calls her on it in 'I Will Remember You' saying that she's jealous.
I think it makes sense she's jealous of Buffy. Buffy was her 'equal' so to speak, at least in Cordelia's eyes. She tells Anya in 'The Wish' that Buffy made Willow and Xander cooler by hanging out with them, and she sort out Buffy initially because she thought she had potential. Cordy's always viewed as her alter ego I think.
And I think some of it had to do with resentment in the beginning because Cordy offered herself to Buffy and Buffy rejected her and chose Willow and Xander instead. I got the impression it took a lot to get into the inner circle and doubt very much Cordy had often been rejected when she had offered her hand out to someone. She had a pretty big ego then and Buffy crushed that it's this whole unspoken "I could have been one of you but I chose geeks instead."
Not to mention that the frat boys weren't interested in Cordy unless Buffy was on her arm, that Owen chose Buffy over Cordelia, that Cordy noticed whilst going out with Xander that he still felt strongly for Buffy and that when she had a crush on Angel he liked Buffy. All that would make anyone a little jealous.
Cordelia may be popular, something that Buffy misses so much, but I feel that Cordelia is jealous of Buffy because she has people who care for her but also that Buffy has a purpose in life. Cordelia starts changing in S2 of Buffy but it?s only on Ats that she starts to see the hurt and suffering of other people. Cordelia in Buffy always behaved a little carelessly and Buffy had a purpose. That?s why Cordy is jealous of Buffy, IMO.
She probably was a little jealous of buffy as time went on. I mean, at first she was drawn to Buffy, then kind of distanced herself when Buffy got a rep as a freak but was drawn back into Buffys world with the scoobies. She probably did secretly look up to Buffy in a way. Plus, buffy had Angel who we all KNOW Cordelia was attracted to! A couple seasons later after Cordelia left sunnydale, & had been around Angel for a few years she was a blonde like Buffy.
Yeah, world of duh.
I mean, "I wish Buffy Summers had never come to Sunnydale."
Angel wanted Buffy. Xander wanted Buffy. The only reason she got invited to that frat party with the big fat, slimey guy was cuz one of the other guys wanted Buffy to come along too (granted to sacrifice them, but...). I suck at naming episodes, sorry.
