  • Best Big Bad

This is pretty simple: who was your favorite "Big Bad" on Buffy The Vampire Slayer? Who do you love to hate and why?

Personally, I have to go with The Mayor. He was a deeply interesting villian with very human traits i.e. his father-daughter relationship with Faith, and his obsessive hatred of dirt. He was a very real threat to Buffy, but I just loved to see what he would do next. I also love Spike & Drusilla and Dark Willow.
Why are you reading this when there's a great Xander picture to look at? Come on, you know you want to!

is this reading material really appropriate for a school? blood rights and sacrifices... chess club branching out?

          Angelus,

He was maybe a little too much talk, but he had so much power over Buffy. And he gave us episodes like 'Passion', 'Becoming part 2' and 'Innocence'. I was invested in Angelus because of Angel, Angelus was so close to me as a viewer (Angel is my favourite character since BtVS s2). And the line 'I thought you were a pro.', is the worst thing ever said to Buffy. I still think that ASH and SMG never showed better acting in the other seasons. DB showed his potential and Angel wasn't a broody teddybear anymore. This was the start of the character Angel who is the most complex and important character.

And I liked the Mayor, he was funny, very well acted and he cared about Faith and his wife, which made him human.

I didn't really like the other big bads, The First and Glory had a lot of potential but in never showed, Dark Willow and the trio were interesting idea's but not written very well and Adam and The Master were not dangerous enough.

I prefer the Ats bad guys; W&H with great characters like Lilah and Holland, Holtz who was looking for revenge and the corrupt PTB Jasmine. The last wasn't executed very well, but the idea was interesting enough to keep me thinking. Darla and Drusilla who showed real girl power and last but not least Angel himself, not Angelus but Angel. He was many times his own big bad.

All my own opinion of course.

Glory. I love how she looked so frail and petite yet she had uncomprehendable strength. Anybody who was foolish enough to take her one would usually end up flying through the air on connection with one of her attacks. Genius.

The best big bad had to be Angelus. No other villains were able to screw with Buffy and everyone and everything around her as much as he did. Whether it was her job or her friends and family he was always around. That makes him the best. The fact that he doesn't have to do anything and yet everyone is afraid of him and what he's capable of.

I really like Dark Willow but she wasn't considered to be the big bad she was kind of a side bar to what the real big bad was which was life. The weakest big bad for me has to be The First. It had so much potential starting from season 3 and by the time they got around to the arc in season 7 the writers didn't really have anything prepared or ready for it. How can you make a big bad out of something that can't actually hurt you. It only taunts people.

I'm agreeing with The Mayor here. The Ascention alone made him pretty awesome, I think. All of that build up for something that really did pay off and actually did cause a lot of damage, destruction and death without being the let down that The First was

                  Angelus,

My favourite is Angelus and always going to be. Firstly, this isn't about supporting Bangel. Angelus was the biggest evil, and his bad behaviours made him cooler. There were lots of evils and big bads but Buffy knocked up with his power. He was the only evil that made her feel weak. Ok, I believe that there is also a love factor here.

I'm seeing a lot of negativity regarding "The First". I thought the concept was very interesting. Why does a Big Bad always have to do physical damage? The concept that your own fears is the biggest bad of them all is what I took away from "The First". Okay, it would have been cool to see the First made coporeal and to see its physical strength a long side of its taunting, but my point is I think there were a lot worse villains out there than Mr First.

The way I see it The First and Caleb came as a package. The First was the one who did the phycological damage and Caleb did the physical. An awsome team and Big Bad if you ask me.

I agree with you, he was pretty great. I actually kinda liked him! haha

Any way, I'm gonna go with Adam... Season 4 was a great season in general, because it really dug deep into Buffy's vulnerability.

And also because the sight of Adam sent chills down my spine. Creeeeeeepy dude! But of course, the actor who played him was tiny in real life hehe.

                        Dark Willow for ever!!!
Seconded! There is no Bad big or small that raises the hairs on the back of my neck more than that black eyed girl.

The sheer emotional rollercoaster of Tara's death right through to Xanders intervention was just magnificent. We might not have seen as much of her as other Bads but the unexpectedness of it, the emotional blankness of her destruction of Warren and all that followed it plus the sheer magic (sorry) of her fight with buffy and all that that represented. Sheer Brilliance.

For me it's a toss up between Glory and the Mayor, I loved the humour that these two bought to Season 3 and 5 and that is the main reason they are my favourite seasons.

It would have to be Angelus... however the Mayor is a very close second.
Both of them were able to scare Buffy and get to Buffy in a way that nobody else could.... unless i'm forgetting someone really important. heh.
Plus, they gave us fantastic episodes, and seasons 2 & 3 were possibly the best years the show ever saw.

I agree with the first and Caleb being the best big bad. The first and Caleb had a control over the members of the scooby gang that no other villian had. For example in 'empty places' the first was able to generate so much fear among the slayerettes and scooby gang that their confidence in thier leader was shattered to such a point that they had to vote her out.
Even more devasting, so desperate and afraid were they that they chose a wanted killer to be their leader over their long time friend who saved them countless times. The fact the first was able to create such a rift between friends shows how much manipulation he had over the group.
Furthermore the first and caleb had the ability to take each of our core members power and use it against them. For example; in chosen Dawn tells Xander his power is 'seeing.' This power is demonstrated is dirty girls when Xander gives and impressive and motivational speech in Buffy's defense to the slayeretts. However his faith in his hero is quickly stripped when Caleb gouges out one of his eyes. In the next episode Xander's support for Buffy is clearly non existant when he tells Buffy he can no longer 'see' her point.
