  • Did Buffy ever go too far?

    Hey

I've been searching the net for old press articles on Btvs out of boredom, and came across a little interesting article written after the season premier for s6. The article reported that many fans were upset or shocked to see Buffy's corpse rotting in the ground, quoting at least one fan who said it was "pretty sick."

It made me wonder, did Btvs ever go too far for you? Did it ever make you stop and think, "really didn't need to see that, there was no need for that?" Did the scene in question make you think this, was there any other scenes you can think of?

Personally I have a hard time thinking of any such scenes in which I thought the show went too far. I was shocked to see Buffy's corpse in this way, but never felt the writers had gone too far by showing it. IMO it was important to see how real her death was, the reality of death and what happens to us when we die, and how it effects others.

So, did the series ever go too far for you? Did you ever think some things were unneeded?

I mean, maybe some scenes, but I have never seriously thought that way. I don't think that Btvs scenes had that much unneeded stuff. When you watch something for the first time, it may really shock you, but when you watch it again, you get used to it.
To sum up, imo everthing was needed for sure

That paricular glimpse of Buffy was a bit gory and i can remember thinking 'ewww' at the time but no more than that.

I don't think it's the most harrowing scene though (and it only lasts for a few seconds at most). The Body, afterlife and CWDP all contain scenes that are equally if not more disturbing.

As for cutting them out; no. The show is greater for such scenes.

The only scene that had me going "Ewwwww?" (to quote Buffy in "Crush") was Willow-Gnarl in "Same Time, Same Place". Everything else is fine.

buffy hasn't go as far as some films and shows! but yh the bit with buffy in the groudn was a bit *shudder* and the flaying of warren was shocking, and same time, smae place. but that episode was just upsetting and frustrating!

I was pretty shocked that they showed Warren getting flayed. But that scene convinced one of my friends that the show was cool (he borrowed the DVD's from me after that). Well, that scene and the one w/ the giant spider (can't remember the episode at this moment).

I though Razor's overtly graphic description of his plans for Willow, Tara, and Anya in "Bargaining, Part II" was gratuitous and unnecessary. Were they playing for the hentai tentacle sex demographic of the audience?

Yeah, that was a little much, but even with that I have a hard time of thinking of moments when BtVS ever went too far.

I never thought Buffy went too far, cause I just love it when it's "ewww" or "oh", but for me the dirtiest scene is definetely in "Dead Things" when Spike f*** (sorry but it's th only word cause making love doesn't really apply considering the scene) Buffy at the bronze and ask her to look at her friends while doing, so pervert and dark....

The only -- and only -- scene in the series that ever made me wonder wha'why? was the the scene at The Bronze in "Dead Things" where Buffy and Spike have sex. I don't believe Buffy would have ever done that with her friends in the same room. Spike's monologue was true (about how she belongs in the dark with him or some matter like that), but to proceed and fornicate with him publicly is un-Buffy-y. They should've had a direct cut to Spike's crypt if the writers really wanted Buffy to get boned.

Infact I just adored that whole story.

Heh. The complete untruth of that manipulative little speech is a good 40% of why I find that scene so offensive. I just didn't think the scene went "too far" for overall appropriateness for prime time TV.

I cannot watch two specific scenes of Intervention: the beginning of Spike's scene with Xander in the crypt and when Xander sees Buffy straddling Spike in the courtyard. Those were really disturbing to me, but I think they were meant to be such and I guess it wasn't "too far" in the strictest sense.
Buffy: It sounds like it's difficult for you. Maybe your sister makes it hard for you to establish your own identity. You said she's controlling, she doesn't let you make your own decisions -
Dawn: Yeah, and she borrows my clothes without asking.

If gratuitous is stuff that didn't need to be there- violence, sex, etc... the balcony scene- not because what Spike said was true, or wasn't (imo, the opposite occurred, Spike didn't pull Buffy into the dark, rather, she drew him to the light, led to the soul getting) but because public sex... not something I need to see in a club in RL or on dvd. Gone, where Buffy is naked when Xander's there.... that's eww, to me. I know the audience and Xander don't see her naked, but to me it's too much.

                                Entropy

There were some scenes that were too physical ( bargaining, the body, the list is long), but i think it was always justified, always for the sake if the show...
joss never does anything without a reason..
but i think the scene in entropy, the "atempt of rape" in the bathroom made me wonder... not in the "was it necessary" way but in the "this show is getting darker" way..
didn't complain about it , though..BtVS grew as a show and all this "go too far" comes in the package, i think.
i think this line's mostly filler...

I don't know about too far per say, but Spike and Buffy having sex at The Bronze while watching her friends, Spike and Buffy having sex up against a wall by a dumpster, Spike and Buffy having invisible sex with Xander in the room - all grossed me out to some degree.
On a totally different note, Willow getting her skin peeled off was pretty horrible too.
No power in the 'verse can stop me.

That's not what disturbed me most. For me it was when Spike is standing and abruptly looks down and tells her "that's cheating." I was a little ashamed...

Yeah, the ghostly haunting scenes in AF and CWDP were pretty freaky, but the only time when I really just had to close my eyes and couldn't bear to watch was the nasty gnarl. Ewwwwww....just, ewww. I could have livede with those scenes cut, or at least if they hadn't shown them, but shown the gnarl only looking up...*shudders*
