  • Buffy Trek: The Next Generation

As many may know, "Alias" and "Lost" creator and "Mission: Impossible III" director JJ Abrams is currently reviving the "Star Trek" franchise on the big screen using the original characters of Captain Kirk, Spock, et al. The characters are being recast, however (including "Heroes" Zachary Quinto as Spock) to let the character not have aged to the present actors current age.

Now that Buffy is a comic book, the time frame is pretty much irrelevant -- they can be in their mid-20s for years and years if Joss and Dark Horse choose. But, the window is closing on a TV mini-series or feature film is closing that includes all the major characters without moving forward in the timeline.

What I'm getting at is, for the amusement factor, how would we cast "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" if we were casting it *now*.

Ground rules -- no recasting of any original actors in their roles. Cast it in the context of whatever time frame in the Buffy timeline that you like. Don't feel limited to cast it based on what the actual actor looks like or acts like -- feel free to tweak the characters a little if you like.

I'm going to propose a few New Buffys first:

    1. Hayden Panettiere -- the ingenue of "Heroes" has already drawn a lot of comparison (although frankly, I don't find Claire to be very much like Buffy at age 16).

    2. Alona Tal -- beloved by many genre fans for roles in both "Veronica Mars" and "Supernatural", she probably could do even more physically of the role herself, given that she is former IDF and probably had a fair amount of training in that regard.

    3. Elisha Cuthbert -- TV and feature film chops in the action and horror and comedy genres.

I just thought I'd get this started with a few. Give your own for Buffy or anyone else

Oooh! Fun! Just off the top of my head (but I reserve the right to come back and choose someone else later)...

Tom Hardy as Spike. He's 29, young looking enough to probably look the part for another 7 years or so.

I think he could play Spike a little dirtier, a little more raw than Marsters. More convincing accent for a start. I saw him in Cape Wrath, a UK thing that wasn't brilliant, but he had a compelling presence, and could definitely up the ante on evil Spike. He's truly scary.

He was also in Band of Brothers and Black Hawk Down and Layer Cake.

This is rather a weird video, being made up of stills clips, but it gives you a good idea of what he looks like and his expressions...

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Weird, actually though about this same question last night because my choice was in a film on the telly.

for an older Xander i don't think you could do much better than Matt Dillon. Spitting image i reckon and got that same goofy quality.

Hardy has a Spike-ish look to him, but I'm not familiar with his work.

Not to overdo the Heroes casting, but Thomas Dekker (Zach) has a Xander-esque quality to me, but more emo, less comic, geeky.

For some reason, I have Shannon Woodward ("The Riches") in mind as a plausible Willow. She has a much harder edge than Alyson, but I think her take on the character would be awesome.

He's a relative unknown, but I think he's on the up. Will think on Buffy possibilities. Trying to think of a GIles...can we make him another age while keeping buffy the same age?

Might be pushing the budget a bit but i could definitely see Jeremy Irons as Giles.

Not sure DT could really pull it off though.

If we're going to swing for the fences, why not Chris Eccleston?

If you really wanted to go a different direction, Chiwetel Ejiafor.

Nah, I was thinking Rupert Penry Jones:

Rupert Penry-Jones photos, including production stills, premiere photos and other event photos, publicity photos, behind-the-scenes, and more.

^ I think he could do both stiff and uppery but also Rippery dangerous. Mind you, he's not quite a perfect fit so I'm going to keep looking. Feel like it's easier for me to cast UK actors (ergo Spike and Giles...ooh, Drusilla next!)

EDIT: I think Anne Marie Duff would make a good Drusilla. She's got this haunted look to her. Perhaps a dark hair dye job though, to contrast with Spike...though, if he was played by Tom Hardy, perhaps they could reverse the colouring? I think they could do Spike not as a punk, but as more of a Jack the Lad perhaps?

EDIT 2: Another Giles option: Ciar?n Hinds (the guy who plays Caesar on Rome)

Anne Marie Duff does look the part. If we're going to relative unknowns, I think Fiona O Shaugnessy (http://www.allesfilm.com/pics/goldfishmemory.jpg) has exactly the right look. I saw her being excellent in a bad production of a Somerset Maugham play and thought she was the spit of Drusilla. Mia Kirshner (of The L Word) could do it too. Actually, a lot of actresses seem to have that haunted, slightly batty look to them. I guess we should choose by who would do the best accent.

Giles is much harder. Think Jeremy Irons is a bit too cold for the part. Alan Rickman?

I'm liking my Chiwetel idea for Giles The Drusilla suggestions look good. Depending on how young we'd except Dru as being, Kat Dennings ("The 40 Year Old Virgin") has potential to me for Dru.

                      Kat Dennings

Here's an idea that I actually could see for Spike *or* Angel, a London born actor named Julian Morris ("Cry Wolf")

                      Julian Morris

Here's another potential Angel candidate, Jon Bennett ("Mean Girls").

eeee. no. pretty boys. there's a difference between pretty boys and handsome gorgeous men that also have a dark edge, which is necessary for angel and spike.

johnny depp is coming to mind, but that's even less likely than db and jm. lol.

raviv ullman might be able to do oz. he has the short, dry humor, wolf boy hair thing.

kristine sutherland and susan sarandon look like they could be sisters.

I don't honestly know what is differentiating 'pretty boys' from ones with an edge. I'm just going with actors that, between their look and having seen them in something that I think gives them the range, seem like they would work

How about Ryan Devlin ("Veronica Mars")? He proved he could play characters with some, uh, hard edges.

                          Ryan Devlin

I'd say he might be a good candidate for Angel more than for Spike.

Wait, here's a Spike idea. Again, I'm not good at this, but he appears to have the Marsters jawline in a couple of these pics. Robert Pattinson ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire").

ryan devlin strikes me as more xander than angel from that picture, imo. if he has edge rather than comic timing, he'd make a better connor than angel.

perhaps somebody who looks a little bit more mature, bigger, more intimidating... handsome enough that the description "the demon with the face of an angel" would work, yet manly enough that it wouldn't come across totally effeminate. that was a key balance. remember, this person would also have to play an intimidating batman-like superhero, a sicko mass murderer who kills with glee (think hannibal lecter) and a sensitive brooder who can shake and cry and reads sartre in a broken down mansion.

it really wasn't the simplest role. you get someone too young and cute, they simply just won't look very intimidating. but at the same time, you're not looking for a brainless action hero or a creepy guy. it's a bit of all of them.

i think somebody around their late-20s/30s would have to be cast. the appearance needs to have a mature look--pure "man".

angel isn't a part for an actor who still somewhat looks like a kid. he's a somewhat regressed adult, but the teen-look isn't a part of the character. think more towards batman (keep in mind the description: "billowy coat, king of pain").

                                hmmm....interesting idea....I'll give it a go...

For the part of Buffy - Rebecca Herbst:

Firstly, Rebecca has the acting chops to pull off a dramatic roll like Buffy. Plus, she's cute and petite and could easily fit into the action roles as well.

                                Giles - Thorston Kaye:

hmmm...a hot Giles...plus this guy has got a super great built-in accent...

                                Angel - Cameron Mathison:

Totally love him, he'd be great - and I can totally see him decked out in all black with the billowy coat, king of pain.

                                Willow - Lindze Leatherman:

She has the adorableness needed to go for an early Willow, plus she's incredibly quirky.

                                Faith - Kelly Monaco:

hmmm, also very petite and fit and could totally play the part of a bitch if given the chance...

                                Spike - Josh Holloway:

Where do I start? He can pull of all the different facets of Spike - acting wise. I still don't think there's anybody out there that can hold a candle to JM for this role, but I think Josh is the next best fit.

                                Anya - Sandra Oh:

Grey's Anatomy (TV Series 2005– ) photos, including production stills, premiere photos and other event photos, publicity photos, behind-the-scenes, and more.

she'd be perfect! Can totally go with the in-your-face honesty and the smart-ass humor!

                                Drusilla - Amy Adams:

What can i say? This girl has a very deceptive look - she looks all peaches and light - but can totally pull off out of her gourd crazy. Dru (before being vamped) was described as being so pure and chaste - and Amy could totally pull that off...but being vamped and insane - could totally fit that bill as well.

Well, that's all I could come up with for now...

Thought of another....Colin Hanks for Xander...he played a similar-type role on Roswell...

and maybe Clea Duvall for Tara....

Another good idea for Willow would be Allison Mack...she could totally pull off the Sabrina-aspect...

Kristin Kreuk would be a good choice to play either Cordelia or Buffy - if we were going for very young Buffy. I vote more for Cordy, keeping Rebecca Herbst as Buffy...

Katherine Moennig would have made an amazing Kennedy. Mm. Then again, I want her to be in everything, so am not very impartial.

More L Word actrsses: Leisha Hailey for Willow? Wouldn't work for early Willow but would be much fun for later Willow.

Katherine Moennig would have made an amazing Kennedy. Mm. Then again, I want her to be in everything, so am not very impartial.
Hee, she could play every part like Alec Guinness in that film he did that in?.can't remember what it was called.

More L Word actrsses: Leisha Hailey for Willow? Wouldn't work for early Willow but would be much fun for later Willow.
Yeah, she's a bit old for young Willow. Not sure who'd be good for young willow. As I said, not v good with young actresses.

I think they should've made Tara a bit more prickly?I'm thinking of the character CD plays in Carnivale, only a little softer perhaps.

Me too! She's a great brat, with great comic timing and wit. And hot.

Ya, I could see that. Though is he too obviously hot? Or is it just my skinny nerd fetish that makes me think he's too obviously hot?
