  • Saddest Moments

I know there was a thread like this somewhere at BW...What are your saddest moments in the Buffyverse?

For me there were so many, and I tend to remember them because the episodes that make me cry are usually among my favorites

One that sticks out to me right now because I just re-watched it again the other day was I Will Remember You when Angel tells Buffy that he's decided to become a superhero again. No matter how many times I've watched this episode, I bawl like a baby...her sad, weeping "I'll never forget" and then poof she does is so heart-breaking. And when Angel says 'forget' to Buffy in the office, knowing he'll always carry that day with him breaks my heart.

    1. The Gift, at the end. I cry every. single. time. The music was spot on, and having Buffy's voice continue after her death clinched it. Dawn's facial expressions were perfect.
    2. Grave. It was kind of bittersweet, with Willow in all her pain and Xander in his (scratched in the face and all that), but Xander getting to save the world and see his best friend again was great as well as Buffy finally utterly ending her depression and the exchange with Dawn.
    3. Prophecy Girl - when you see Buffy looking over her photo album and the "I don't want to die" bit.
    4. The Body/Forever - Just both of the episodes all the way through, especially the end of "Forever" and the whole "The Body." Incredibly sad, and when Buffy is still looking at her mother's body through Giles' arm, and her eyes are wide open, well...that was just incredible acting. The whole thing was written perfectly to affect the audience the most.
    5. Becoming Part 2 - as much as I think it's overrated, the end when you see Buffy's face on the bus, you know she's sad. I think I cried the first time but in retrospect, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was.
    6. Hell's Bells - you know exactly what Xander's thinking and exactly why he leaves. But you still have to feel for Anya because after all this...she has to walk up that aisle alone.
    7. Conversations with Dead People - Willow's part. You see (happy) tears streaming down her face at the beginning when she's told Tara sees her, and by the end she's been utterly emotionally destroyed by the First.
    8. Into the Woods - Buffy running after her talk with Xander about how good Riley really is, and walking home after she got there too late, sitting on the steps.
    9. Spiral - At the very end, with Buffy just sitting there, tears welling up because she couldn't protect Dawn and thinks it's her fault. You just have to feel for her here.

Buffy: It sounds like it's difficult for you. Maybe your sister makes it hard for you to establish your own identity. You said she's controlling, she doesn't let you make your own decisions -
Dawn: Yeah, and she borrows my clothes without asking.

This is just a list its not best to worst or anything... They all make me cry or just sit there in utter shock...

      1. Into the Woods: When Buffy doesn't get to riley in time (not a fan of the ship but still...)

2.The Body: The start when Buffy finds her mum and calls 911 and then with Giles and the Anya speech...

3.Forever: When Buffy and dawn are arguing and then Buffy slaps dawn and then they're both on the ground crying

      4. I will remember You: The end with Buffy and Angel

      5. Passion: When Giles finds Jenny dead and then when Buffy punches Giles

      6. Hells Bells: The whole Xander and Anya thing at the end...

      7. Wrecked: When Willow's crying and Buffy says harshly "get up."

      8. Seeing red/Villains: Tara's death

      9. A Hole in the World: Holy moly!! Cried like the entire time!!

      10. A New World (i think it was?): When Angel tried to smother Wesley

I cry alot, you may have noticed that
      Just under it, actually.

The saddest moment for me throughout the entire series is Anya in The Body. It's absolutely gut wrenching whe she says she doesn't understand. Then she talks about Joyce never drinking fruit punch and never brushing her hair. Uhh. You get a little chuckle though when she finds the sweater Willow was looking for so that takes away some of the sadness. Altogether The Body was a very sad episode. Another sad part in the series is in Innocense when Buffy goes to Angels apartment. Angelus is there and says all these horrible things, how she wasn't any good and she has a lot to learn about men. OMG. I feel so bad for her at that moment. If any guy ever said anything even remotely close to what Angelus said, to me, I would beat his ass that's for sure. Buffy sort of gets her thunder back after she kicks Angelus in the balls at the end. I can't think of any more moments as of now but I'm pretty sure there are many more that get to me. Those are the only two that came to mind right away.

I found Tara's death utterly heart-rending when I was twelve. It's funny: I'm not sure if I would find it so moving now, but then I was absolutely shaken.

Also the end of the episode where Giles leaves and Tara leaves Willow, with the Michelle Branch song playing at the background. I found the moment where Dawn won't hug Tara very moving.

Some of Wesley's angst in AtS 3 and 4 was quite touching too.

And the end of "Hero" where they play the tape and Doyle says "Is that it? Am I done?" Touched my cold, cold heart, may have even got a tear.
"When people call people nerds, mostly what they are saying is, 'You like stuff', which is just not a good insult at all, like 'You are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness'."

oooh, that was actually in Forgiving, and yeah, that was a rather tear-ful moment!

You've all come up with some good ones.

Definitely the Body, which was mentioned, but nobody has yet to mention the scene with Buffy telling Dawn in the hallway at the school. To not be able to hear Buffy's side of the conversation and to only be able to see and partially hear Dawn's reaction...the acting on the part of MT was outstanding, and I sob every.single.time.

Another scene that has yet to be mentioned is when Buffy breaks down and sobs on Willow's lap in the Prom after Angel broke up with her. I can't help but cry, and also when she gets her award and when Angel shows up at the prom...that entire episode is like a cry-fest for me...

I also sob often in Innocence. Especially cry-some is the scene where Buffy goes home and sobs alone on her bed. It's so pitiful and sad. Of course I always cry like a baby when Angelus shoves her to the ground in the hallway, too. The look on her face is so so sad.

I sob like a baby every time Wesley dies in NFA. And then I cheer as Illyria smashes her fist through Vale's face!

You're Welcome, the end of that ep was so damn sad I quit Angel for a few weeks after it, losing Cordy was a huge blow, I think more than any other character in the Buffyverse.

              The recording in Hero.

The Body, though not Anya's speech. I always felt that speech in particular felt incredibly forced for a 1000 year old demon who has been dealing death for ages.

A Hole in the World was manipulative as all hell, but still pretty sad, Shells though hit me where it hurts with the scene where Fred leaves home at the end.

Wesley's death in NFA, hell most of that episode is really somber.

              Dawn finding Tara's body.

              Giles at Jenny's grave.

Probably missing a few, so we'll see what happens.

Oh right, most of S7 was incredibly sad, though I think that's a different type of sad than what we're talking about here.

The absolute hands down saddest moment of the whole series for me is the last scene in "Forever" when Buffy breaks down and bawls. Sarah does an EXCELLENT job in that scene.
                  Other than that:
                  End of Becoming Part 2
                  End of The Gift
The whole episode of The Body
The scene in Innocence when Angelus berates Buffy when she comes to see him for the first time since they slept together.
The end of I Will Remember You
                  The end of You're Welcome
The end of A Hole in the World

                      4. Connor being taken from Angel.

                        Also in no particular order;

Cordelia's finale scene: Now this actually makes me tear up, she was so loveable in that episode, everything about her was the way she should have been. We were taunted with the idea of her coming back and being so vibrant and warm and then she had to die. When she says "Your welcome" I nearly lost it, it was a beautiful final moment for Cordelia.

Fred's Death: Something about, "Why can't I stay" just sends shivers through my body. It was such a horrifying line to know that Fred was so scared and wanted to be alive so much.

Passions: The whole episode was pretty sad in general, the two most sad moments had to have been when Angelus is watching Buffy and Willow get the phone call. When Willow breaks down and sobs, that has to be AH's finest moment in the entire series. And of course the finale scene when Willow is in the computer class is very touching.

The Gift: When Buffy dies, I still get very sad even though I must have seen it hundreds of times.

Chosen: I found this episode pretty sad just because it was the end of Btvs, and of course Anya being cut from behind was terrible. I get shivers when Xander is yelling out her name and her corpse is staring at the screen.

The Body: Truly sad episode, when Buffy comes to tell Dawn at school has to be one of the most horrible moments of Btvs history.

Doyle's video: I didn't actually care for Doyle that much but his "Is that it? Am I done?" makes me pretty sad as well, which I think is an achievement of the writers considering I didn't really like his character.

1.Innocence- When Buffy finds out Angel has turned and she goes home to cry on her bed. It breaks my heart. Anytime SMG cries...I cry.
                          2. Becoming, pt.2- I always cry when she has to send Angel to hell and she leaves Sunnydale. Its the damn music...thats what I blame it on.
                          3. The Gift- Yup, gonna cry when Buffy dies..just the way I am. Its such a sad and dramatic moment.
                          4. When Oz leaves. Come on...admit it. Willow cries, we all are gonna cry. It is simply heartbreaking when Oz says he is leaving and Willow starts cry.
                          5. I didn't like Riley that much, but it is so sad when he leaves. Buffy realized she wanted him to stay and couldn't get there. More heartbreak in the world of Joss.
                          6. The death of Fred.
                          7. The death of Wesley.
                          8. The death of Doyle.
                          9. The end of I Will Remember You. Just not fair...finally get the perfect Bangel day and its ruined by his moral conscious...blah.
                          10. And the saddest moments of all...the final episodes of both shows. Why? Duh...because they ended.

                            For BTVS:

                            1. Spike and Anya in "Chosen".
                            2. The end of Grave (although it was kind of a happy sad).
                            3. The end of Tara.
                            4. Buffy telling everyone where she was in the end of OMWF.
                            5. The end of "The Gift".
                            6. Every second of "The Body."
                            7. Buffy missing Riley in "Into the Woods"
                            8. Willow crying in "Wild At Heart".
                            9. Angel leaving in "Graduation Day Part 2".
                            10. The end of "Becoming Part 2".
                            11. Giles finding Jenny in "Passion."
                            12. Buffy scared in "Prophecy Girl".

                            For ATS:

                            1. Most of "Not Fade Away".
                            2. Fred in "A Hole in the World".
                            3. Cordelia in "You're Welcome".
                            4. The end of "Lullaby".
                            5. Poor Coredlia in "That Vision Thing".
                            6. Most of "The Trial".
                            7. Poor Cordelia in "To Shanshu in L.A.".
                            8. Faith at the end of "Five By Five".
                            9. Doyle in "Hero".
                            10. Buffy and Angel in "I Will Remember You".
"Love isn't brains, children, it's blood...blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it."

For me the saddest moment is for sure the end of The Gift. My friend and I thought that it was Dawn who jumped so we were so surprised when it was actually Buffy. I started crying right when her last words were played over the clips of her falling and her friends looking at her body... it was so sad. Then her grave- it was too much. I was seriously depressed after that episode, haha.

The body was also really sad. Buffy's soft "Mommy...?" and Anya getting all upset because she just couldn't understand.

I agree with all of these--The Body is the only Buffy epp where I cried the first time I watched it (though when I recently watched Innocence I did get a little teary-eyed when Buffy breaks down on her bed with the claddagh ring--another very sad scene!), and the second time, for pretty much the entire epp. So heart-wrenching! Not to mention the end of the Gift, with that beautiful music playing and showing everyone's reactions, and then her grave. And I also think the end of Becoming is pretty sad!

However I think that ATS has more of the saddest moments.

For example I always get teary-eyed at Wes's heart-wrenching, "I've missed you!" during his death scene in NFA...I mean, DAMN! I'm not even that much into Fresley, but that scene is so sad (yet not sad, since he really didn't like living anymore anyway by then), and it does make me hope that they were wrong about Fred's soul getting destroyed by Illyria--that Wes will join her up there....

I think the most tragic death in the Buffyverse, or certainly on ATS, and thus one fo the saddest moments, is Fred's death...so horrible! And I completely agree with bishopcruz about the end of Shells, when it plays that music and shows Fred leaving home (esp. after the flashback at the beginning of AHITW) it really does hit me where it hurts as well.....

Originally posted by vampmogs View Post

So of course I find YW to be very sad as well--although I think the scene in The Magic Bullet is sadder, in which Angel is sitting by Comatose!Cordy's bedside, kissing her tenderly on the forehead and whispering "I'm so sorry," then the way he holds her hands and is so pathetically excited when he thinks she's waking up, then looks (convincingly! Yay for some fine acting by DB!) on the verge of tears when he realizes she's not waking up.....that scene is also up there for me.

In IWRY I'm kind of distracted by how strange SMG's expression is....

Over-emotional, thy name is Christie. In no particular order other than the first one being my saddest:

                                    1. Cordelia's death in You're Welcome. I hadn't watched ATS properly since the beginning of the fourth season (I was a Spoiler-Whore and read everything, couldn't face watching it) so I tuned in for the last ep 'cause Charisma was quoted as saying it was a nice end to Cordelia's storyline.

Her death was probably the saddest moment in the whole two shows for me.

                                    2. Buffy's death in The Gift. The way it was all laid out at the end, her voice, the music and the looks on her friends faces as they realised that Buffy truly had died.

                                    3. The entire episode of The Body. It was cruel, in a way, to have the start the way it was. I thought IWMTLY was a big joke from the week before. Joyce was fine... And then, good lord, that episode choked me.

From Anya's speech to Buffy going to get Dawn in the hospital. Most heart-breaking thing ever for me.

                                    4. Doyle's death in ATS. I tear up whenever I hear him say, "Is that it? Am I done?"

                                    5. Anya dying in Chosen. This was one of the biggest shocks for me. I stayed mostly unspoiled for the last ep, hadn't even dreamed that Anya would die. Not good. Not good at all. It was so heartbreaking hearing Xander call her name like that (even if I didn't like Xander the majority of the time).

                                    6. The final scene in Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been with Angel and Judy kills me every time. When she asks him if she's safe it makes me bawl like a baby.

                                    7. Oz leaving in S4 of Buffy. I wasn't Willow's biggest fan ever, but that was so sad! Especially when she found out about Oz and Veruca and she asked if it was payback, if she was being punished. And then Oz, who I adored, leaving. *cries*

^ oh, you just reminded me...when Willow confronted Oz and Veruca...wow, Alyson did such a fantastic job...I was sobbing...and then at the end of the episode when she asked him if he loved her, gosh, I was still sobbing!

I just rewatched Prophecy Girl tonight, and Buffy's 'I don't want to die' speech got me teary-eyed.

And I didnt' mention AHITW before, well, because that's just a given...when Fred asks Wes if he could have loved her and he tells her he loved her before he even knew her... that was so heart-wrenching, and her pitiful 'why can't I stay?' ugh!

I also always cry in I Only Have Eyes for You...it's so heartbreaking when they're caught up in the ghosts' dialogue, but it fits their situation, too...then when it breaks and Buffy simply says "Angel" and he shoves her and runs out...oh so sad!

Another episode scene that always makes me cry is when Buffy finds out that Giles drugged her in Helpless...that trust broken breaks my heart, then at the end when he's helping patch up her bloody knee, and Buffy's face when Travors says that Giles has a father's love for the child, just gut-wrenching for me for some reason...

She did a fantastic job in that full episode. When she was walking along the street crying, my heart actually ached for her. By the end, I was a crying mess, overemotional much?

I Only Have Eyes For You killed me and, I admit, that I wasn't all that much of a Buffy/Angel fan (I liked them okay but not as much as I thought I would've, for some reason). Same with Becoming Pt2.

When Giles goes after Angelus in a S2 episode for killing Jenny, I forget which episode it is, but when he breaks down outside of the factory... I think my love for Giles (and ASH) only grew from that point on.
