  • Additional albums in a 'hypothetical Buffy Angel soundtrack'

Lets assume for a moment, somewhere in the (near) future there might be a release of a Buffy - Angel soundtrack compilation somewhere, that has almost every (available) song, track and score from the series included, most of them as 320 kbit mp3.

Lets further assume, almost every album that has been used in building this compilation would be available even really, really rare ones.

Which 12 albums (i call it the "dirty dozen albums") would you want to be included as goodies in this hypothetical soundtrack ?

    All hypotheticly of course.

I'm a little lost, could you elaborate a little more?

      Well,
for starters remove the term 'hypothetical'. There is absolutely nothing hypothetical about this at all. It is very real and it is going to be soon.

This should make the question pretty clear:
which 12 albums (other than the 6 official albums) do you think, should or 'must' be included in this compilation as 'goodies' ?

I assume you are familiar with at least 1 website with an elaborate tracklist for all the music on Angel and Buffy (some include information on the used albums).

If not, maybe those help :

Looking for country statistics? NationMaster gives access to market sizing and trends across 300 industry verticals and a global coverage.

      Still lost ?

i know you've included tracks like nancy sinatra's "these boots are made for walking" (1966) and the beatles' "i am the walrus" (1967) based on xander's allusions to the lyrics of the songs in dialog... here are two you missed (the first two are shameless, i know):

Buffy: Well, she said that you were a... h-hunk of burning... something or other. So, whadaya think of that?
Giles: Uh, I... I don't, um, uh... A burning hunk of what?
Halloween = Elvis Presley - Burning Love (1972)

Veruca : Number one? No. I gotta go with Hound Dog.
Willow : Me, too. That's a great song. I mean, Elvis, what a guy.
Veruca : You a big Elvis fan?
Willow : The biggest. Well, I mean, after Dingoes, of course.
Oz : We're actually talking amps. But it's easy to get confused, the names they give 'em.
Wild At Heart = Elvis Presley - Hound Dog (1956)

Cordelia: Oh, geez, Wesley. Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, alright?"
              Reprise = James Baskett - Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah (Disney's Song of the South - 1946)

              Buffy: This is a dream.
Master: A dream is a wish your heart makes. This is real life.
              Nightmares = Ilene Woods - A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes (Disney's Cinderella - 1950)

also, the version of "goodnight, my love" you hear in innocence is from the shirley temple film "stowaway" and sung by alice faye (you used some ella fitzgerald version--please use this one). in fact, here's the scene buffy and joyce are watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BEH32vdJLU

and i believe you missed donna summers' "macarthur park" (1978)... which is sung and mentioned having been sung by lorne as well as HEARD in orpheus (it's the song on the jukebox before angel switches it to "mandy"). lorne apparently also sings it while lindsey hacks up the fell brethren.

another idea would be to include all the famous versions of songs sung by lorne and the like. you have some of them, but you could also do the rest of the "lady marmalade", "viva las vegas", "it's not easy being green" (kermit) etc... ones even though the andy hallett versions are available in some cases (those two pop in my mind for being either only the andy hallett cover or not on the list at all.

and just for a quick reminder... the buffy movie soundtrack. i always feel so sorry for it getting left out of the music of buffy lists. gotta love the divinyls (always loved how lie to me's reference to "i touch myself" and the divinyls being a part of buffy's pre-sunnydale life felt like an inside joke nod to the movie).

                Thats the spirit !

Some of your suggestion are already "implemented", at least in the current soundtrack version on my harddisk. I'll start on the others after work.

All the official albums and 'several' albums that have been used for the soundtrack will be included as goodies. Current count: 6 official + 174 other
Next month there will be a new Buffy score album by Christophe Beck increasing the official album count by 1. It is already ordered btw.

I'll send you a current tracklisting for the next release, let me know what you think of it, ok ?

Angel 4x03 - The Archies - Sugar Sugar
might i ask about this one? where in the house always wins did this one appear/get referenced? being a huge oldies nerd, you'd think i'd remember.

also, i'd use judy garland's iconic "somewhere over the rainbow" rather than tony bennett's... but that's just me.

I think i got it from there:

Animation and cartoons are two words that are mostly used interchangeably.

I'll check it out later and remove the track in case the entry is wrong.

i've caught wikipedia's references being wrong before (surprise, surprise). i've corrected a handful in the past when i see them.

basically... the ones i'd add are (a few are title-related--you've already got "i fall to pieces" covered in prophecy girl):

Angel 2x15 - James Baskett (Song of the South) - Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah
Angel 2x20 - Judy Garland - Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Angel 4x03 - Elvis Presley - Viva Las Vegas
Angel 4x03 - Patti LaBelle - Lady Marmalade
Angel 4x03 - Jim Henson (Kermit - The Muppets) - It's Not Easy Being Green
Angel 5x22 - The Crickets (Buddy Holly) - Not Fade Away
Buffy 1x10 - Ilene Woods (Cinderella) - A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes
Buffy 1x11 - The Five Keys - Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Buffy 2x02 - The Temptations - My Girl
Buffy 2x06 - Elvis Presley - Burning Love
Buffy 1x14 - Alice Faye (Stowaway) - Goodnight, My Love
Buffy 4x06 - Elvis Presley - Hound Dog

                        Right song, wrong episode.

                        It should be:
Angel 4x04 - The Archies - Sugar Sugar

                        Transcript scene 17:
                        INT. HOTEL/ANGEL INVESTIGATIONS - NIGHT
Cordelia walks out of her room and into the hallway. Walking down the hallway, she hears noises from a nearby room. She stop to listen. It's a voice singing. She follows the sound.

                        GUY (O.S.)
Sugar, sugar, bah bah bum bum bum. You are my candy girl.

                        LORNE
OK, OK, jug head. That's enough. That's enough. Look, I'll make this simple. (Cordy listens at the door) You, you have an addiction. You know it and I know it. Now if you don't stop snacking on you-know-who's you're gonna end up on the wrong end of you-know—

Lorne goes to the door and looks out, but Cordy has left before he could see her. He goes back to the guy who was singing for him, who's drooling profusely.

                        DROOLING GUY
                        What?
                        Mystery solved.

As long as one of them would have included the Willow/Oz Love Theme from "Wild At Heart" by Christophe Beck I would be happy to buy the whole compilation! It`s so beautiful and it`s a shame that it has never been released on any of the soundtracks...

Well, since it is not on the new score album expected this September, you'd have to settle with a DVD rip.

what i really want is drusilla's nursery theme (reunion), wesley's fred-stalking theme (billy) and evil-cordy's mwahaha connor-brainwashing theme (various season 4).

if i recall, it seems to be the same theme or similar. it's that creepy, slow piano theme.

i would love it if somebody, who is musically adept, would figure out the notes on the piano and perhaps record us a version of it that way. i've mostly given up the hope that we'll get another ats score album with that on it.

I always planned on doing some more proper dvd audio rips, guess, now is the time.

                                who needs weekends anyway ?

It is a shame, most themes for a dvd audio rip are "poisened" by the actors.
Sometimes i wish they would have been shut up or muted during those passages (no offense ).
I'll include them, but i'm really unhappy with the results do far.

Lets hope, Christophe Beck comes to his senses ...

Btw, NileQT87, i included most of your suggestions already.
I should be finished with the rest next weekend.

After that, i'll have to wait for the last ordered cds to arrive, which could be until the end of september (for the new score cd).

The planned release date is in the 1st half of October after i had a little vacation myself.
If you have any futher sugestion or corrections or other input, please post them before this date.

Thats it for today, i guess.

A few years ago I had a software where I could remove the vocals from soundrips. Here are some of them I made (without any vocals):

                                      Christophe Beck:

Passion Of Grief (when Willow and Buffy finds out about Jennys death):

Pretty Much Now (when Oz leaves in "New Moon Rising"):

Studying - from Angel episode "Somnambulist" (might be by R.Kral):

Too Late (from "Becoming, part 1" as Buffy finds Kendra. Just the end of the track "Massacre": http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GZQQ2H08

Family (a rip from Christophe Becks movie "Cheaper By The Dozens". Beautiful score!): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4KBLY6X0

                                      Thomas Wanker:

                                      Run (from "Into The Woods"):

                                      Shadow (from "Shadow"):

Tough Love (from "Tough Love" after Willow and Tara had their first fight):

                                      Hope you enjoy

Do you remember what application you used or what sort of audio filter ???

Edit: I tried Audacity with several filtering methods, including carefully using vocal filtering. Since the vocals aren't EXACTLY in the center of the stereo tracks, the processing just changes the original sound too much to be worth the effort in my opinion.
I'll leave the rips as they come, normalized and with small fade in/out sections.
