  • The Missing Commentaries

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a commentary whore -- I love the DVD sets for the commentaries by writers, directors, and cast members, the more commentaries on a set, the better.

Sadly, not all episodes have commentaries. And not even all episodes you'd think would or should have commentaries have commentaries. And some that have commentaries you kinda wish had different or better or just other commentaries.

So, share your lists, top 5 or 10 for Buffy and for Angel, of episodes you wish had commentaries that don't, or had different commentaries, who you'd want to be giving commentary, and what you'd hope to learn from it.

    Random examples...

    1. "The Gift" -- commentary by Joss Whedon. Where is this, yo? How could he not provide a commentary for that episode?

    2. "Intervention" -- commentary by Jane Espenson, James Marsters, and Clare Kramer. Want some anecdotes about breaking the story, about how they came up with ideas for how the Buffybot would act and Sarah's reaction to it. James with funny shooting stories of all the Spike/Buffybot stuff. Clare and James bantering over the interrogation scene and Glory's lopsided ass

    3. "Becoming, Part II" -- commentary by Joss Whedon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and David Boreanaz. Should be self-explanatory

    4. "Dopplegangland" -- commentary by Seth Green and Alyson Hannigan. Seth making fun of Aly licking herself.

    5. "Sanctuary" -- commentary by Tim Minear and Eliza Dushku. I'd love to hear either of their thoughts on Buffy's portrayal in the episode, but also about the change in Faith over the four-part episode (for her) that concludes here.

    6. "Reunion" -- commentary by Tim Minear and Julie Benz.

I could keep on goin', but I don't want to take all the good episodes

    I've got a couple from King's list;

    1) The Gift- How was this not given a commentary? It doesn't make sense to me? Was Joss still sore over the fact all the WB cancellation nonsense was going on during this episode? Who knows, but it really should have had one!

    2) Becoming II- Again, it needed a commentary with as King said, Sarah, Joss and David. It's one of the most highly regarded episodes in the fandom, a lot of people's favourite moment, and in Joss' favourite list, there really should have been a commentary.

    3) Graduation Day Part II- End of an era. Really it should have had Joss Whedon, David and Charsima just for the hell of it to give their thoughts on how they felt shooting their last episode, and then add in some Sarah, Nick or Ally for fun. I would have really liked to hear their thoughts on the end of high school, end of Buffy/Angel, departure of Cordy and Angel, Angel/Buffy erotic bite scene, Faith dream sequence ect.

    4) Passion- always wished they'd been a commentary for this. Again, it's a very highly regarded episode and it would have been really nice to hear the thought process of the episode.

    5) Sanctuary- It isn't something I had considered until I read King's post but I think he's right. I would have loved to see what Eliza thinks of Buffy's reaction to Faith and get her perspective on the episode, that would have been really interesting.

... but then I'm still bitter the Australian Btvs dvd's including the Chosen Collection are missing the commentary with Joss and Seth for 'Wild At Heart.'

If you could do a DVD commentary on any episode, which would you do?
James Marsters: The one with the Buffybot [Intervention]. (Nocturnal 3K, 6-01)

Coupled with the James/Sarah banter at PaleyFest... now I'm curious.

I was just going to do my usual drive-by-quotage thing, but what the heck:

      1) The Gift -- Joss Whedon
      2) Intervention -- Jane Espenson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, James Marsters
      3) Darla -- Julie Benz, Tim Minear
      4) Who Are You? -- Sarah Michelle Gellar, Eliza Dushku
      5) Dead Things -- Steven S. DeKnight, James Contner

I guess I'm unusual, because I've always wanted to hear commentaries on the worst eps, because I always watch them and go "What the hell were they thinking??!!" And "do they realize how awful this is?" So that would be:

        1. Wrecked
        2. DMP

Awesome idea Shasta! I've also wondered "What the hell were they thinking?!"

          To add to your list

          Inca Mummy Girl
          Reptile Boy
          Ted
          Bad Eggs
          Go Fish
          Living Conditions

          to name a few......

"Reptile Boy" actually has a pretty engaging commentary by David Greenwalt.

If we were getting a "what the hell were they thinking" commentary, I'd vote for "Empty Places". Sadly, though, "what the hell were they thinking" commentaries usually don't actually answer the question, such as the commentary to "Lies My Parents Told Me".

I would love to hear a commentary for:

Becoming pt 2 - Joss Wheddon, SMG, JM and DB
The Gift - Joss Whedon and SMG
Reprise - Tim Minear and DB
Shells - AD, AA and Steven DeKnight
To Sanshu in La - David Greenwalt
Get it done - SMG, NB and Douglas Petrie

Buffy actually has a lot of commentaries. Angel is the one who lacks a lot of commentaries, imo.
