  • Actors Fav? Best? Underated? Disliked?

Just wondering what people thought about the actors themselves as I haven't seen any dicussions or opinions on this.

Preferably directly related to the characters they play on btvs, ats and
    reasons plz is you can

Who also who do you think is the most underated, and best. Remember that if a actor/actress is meant to be a evil guy and they do a top-notch job. Then you might actually hate them. But you've got to respect that. As that's their job.

    Who you dislike

Fav : Alyson Hannigan(Willow)- she's just so damn sexy

Best: Being unbiased here Aly again. The role she plays on buffy I can't think of anyone else who play it. She brings her own personality to the role. And the character of willow would be nowhere near as popular if Aly didn't play it.

Underated: Adam Busch(Warren). Now I hate the character but I have a grudging respect for Adam because he plays it so well.

Disliked: I don't really like Nicolas Brendon (Xander) much. The character I think I could like much more if someone else played it.

Favourite: David Boreanaz. I know, not the best of the bunch ... but I like his way of acting. He doesn't overact, he doesn't need to make a big cryface to show sadness ... his eyes are powerful enough (finding out about evil Cordy, last scenes in Damage). He made me more cry than any of the other actors.

The Best: Alexis Denisof. What he did with Wesley is amazing. The whole transformation of geek to warrior was amazing. And AD sold every moment and every stadium of it. And next to all the fantastic acting, he also pulled off a pretty good accent (the English people probably disagree, but for me it was fantastic.) I think that Anthony Head is a fantastic actor as well, but he had less to play with and showed less.

Underated: Vincent Kartheiser. Amy Acker as well, but I think that VK is more underrated. VK is amazing as Connor. Desbelieve, hate, confusion, love, pride ... some of the emotions that Connor has, mostly in a very short time ... sometimes at the same time. And VK pulled it off, not just hero Connor, but also twisted Connor, Confused Connor and happy Connor. I think that part of why Connor is so much more powerfull than Dawn, the acting of VK is.

Dislikes: Charisma Carpenter, the worst of the actors. Great comedy timing, and when she is really feeling it, there can be drama (You're Welcome) ... but most of the time, she isn't very strong outside the comedy.

i agree 100% and for every reason you stated. exactly my choices. i also think david is a little underrated because the performance isn't supposed to be all comic relief--which is why a lot of people don't pay attention--he isn't all in your face and on the surface of the shows. he carries the bulk of the drama--and a lot of it is in his eyes. a lot of people like to constantly rag on angel and say he was only good as angelus, because angelus was an in your face character--he was half camp/half hannibal lector. angel was more subtle and a lot deeper. there was a much broader range of emotions with angel than with angelus. from scary/creepy, goofy, desperation, mopey, tormented, vicious, angry, kick-ass, sweet, a guy built like a football player who acted weak as a kitten... david had a lot of stuff to do. probably a larger range of emotions to play than any other actor.

he might not be alexis denisof, but david actually had the largest range of emotions. he also carried by far the most drama in both series.

and vincent kartheiser is so awfully underrated, it's sick. and i happen to love tormented-connor the most of all. he was good from day one. he's one of my absolute favorites. vincent was allowed to be more than just a t.v. show child. he was allowed to be just as deep and maturely written/acted as the upper tier of the dramatic characters. michelle trachtenberg and vincent kartheiser were both kiddie movie actors in their childhoods... but it is painfully clear which one has given the cleanest break from their past in terms of their acting style--or what the writers were willing to let them do. unfortunately, it helped that vincent was a lot less famous as a child actor than michelle was. he didn't really have a manufactured image that stuck (though michelle has spoken a lot about how she kept begging to be written more maturely, to be allowed to wear black, etc...--the ats writers were more fearless than the btvs writers.). vincent also has the rebel edward furlong vibe, which probably got him the part.

as far as charisma... she's a comedic actress. she has a lot of trouble with drama and overacts a lot. she got better when she was really feeling it like like in you're welcome--her voice was softer. she acted maturer. but she is also guilty of the worst line delivery in either shows' history--"i'm in LOVE. with ANGEL!"

the other actor that completely rubbed me the wrong way was mark lutz... he was such a lower tier of actor in comparison. he stuck out like a sore thumb. he belonged on hercules, xena or charmed. his acting style was more suited to those shows. ats is a much more subtle style of show. he was pure over-smiling camp. unfortunately, charisma sometimes had to be pulled back from entering the same style of overacting.

adam busch is also one of the most underrated actors in the 'verse. same with keith szarabajka.

as for how good an actor david actually was--julie benz has stated david helped her a lot with subtlety and not overacting.

Best: I would say Wesley too. But its too close to call really, i think Marsters and Dushku were both
        good actors.

Underated: i dont know if he's underated, but i'll pick the Master. Ive read some people before saying
he wasnt that good, i thought he done great though, whoever played him made him funny and likeable.
(ive heard it was Kramer off Seinfeld that plays him)

Disliked: CONNOR. Worst casting ever. Nothing against Vincent whatshisface, but
this guy just didnt suit being Connor. I just couldnt get it that this was
supposed to be the intimidating destroyer. When he dropped through the portal
for the first time, i just thought 'seriously...This guy?'

the master is played by the INfamous mark metcalf, better known as douglas c. neidermeyer, the neo-nazi-like omega r.o.t.c. lieutenant who got dragged by his horse, ended up in a neckbrace and was shot by his own troops, from national lampoon's animal house... he's pretty iconic, actually. he was even referenced in the twilight zone movie as being shot by his own troops.

it kills me when he says neidermeyer-like things. the "schmuck" line he says to spike always reminds me of: "you're all worthless and weak! now drop and give me twenty!"

i love the master. definitely underrated. absolutely hilarious. and mark metcalf is a hollywood legend.

            Favourite: Sarah Michelle Gellar

She's my favourite on either show, I think she's wonderful. Her comic timing is genius "You can die happy!" and at the same time she can show anger "I didn't bring this with me and I never asked for you to come to me with your problems. I just wanted to be left alone if you can't deal then don't lay it off on me!" and sadness "There isn't enough time, I'll never forget, I'll never forget!" I also think she's one of the best actors on either show in her facial expressions. When she blows the judge up with the rocket launcher in 'Innocence' and the smoke clears we get a close up of her face and her eyes are just amazing. You get a sense of her taking her power back after all the crap she's been put through in that episode.

The Best: Again I'm going to have to say Sarah or maybe Anthony Steward Head. He's wonderful and really underrated IMO. He brings a hell of a lot to the table, he can play so many different things but he's far more subtle so I don't think he gets the attention he deserves.

Underrated: I'm going to go with David Boreanze on this one. Mainly because some people give him a lot of flak for his acting, mostly in the first three seasons of Btvs, and I've even heard comments when he's been pretty hard on himself for those first seasons as well. Yes there was times when he wasn't the best, that's for sure, but he wasn't as bad as people make him out to be IMO. He can speak volumes with his eyes, his transformation into Angelus was wonderful and very different from how he played Angel. There's also quite an intensity to him as well, and a calmness in some of his scenes, in particular the scene with Anthony in 'Out of Mind, Out Of Sight.' So IMO he's underrated, not the best, but not as bad as people make him out to be.

Dislikes: I didn't like Vincet either. I don't think he made the character likeable at all, and you have to be able to do that when the character can be pretty bad at times. And I hate to say it but Charisma was off at times. Loved her when she was playing the snarky bitch, there's no one better. And she was great in scenes where she's being caring but in that very snarky Cordelia way, "I'm Cordelia, I don't think, I know, okay?" but some of her later scenes were just horrid "I'm in love! With Angel!" But she blew me away in 'You're Welcome' so she does have the acting chops.

Because I love Buffy character and SMG makes me love her even more.

                Best: Sarah Michelle Gellar
Because her acting in The Body was the best performance of the Buffyverse.

                Underrated: Adam Busch
I like his character, but more than anything, he's an excellent actor.

                Disliked: Charisma Carpenter
Good in comedy, bad in Drama (except You're Welcome).

                  My Favorite:

SOOOO hard, but I'd have to say Alexis Denisof. His acting is some of the best I've ever seen. He is one of the reasons the later seasons shined so because Alexis made Wesley. Wesley is, IMO, the best developed character in the Jossverse and that could not have happened without Alexis. I love his comedic timing in BtVS s3 and Ats s1/2, but he slowly began to grow on me with drama. By Ats s3....wow! "Sleep Tight" gets my everytime, and his expression after Angel tries to kill him in "Forgiving" is so amazing. Not only can he bring that amazing darkness, but he can be a very sad actor, as shown in "A Hole In The World". When people think of acting in that episode, they think, "AMY!" and they should, but does no one remember Alexis? Definitely my favorite.

                  The Best:

This one's easy. Sarah Michelle Gellar. One of the only actors to ever make me cry: her performance in "The Body" is absolutely stunning. I love her performance in many other episodes like "Prophecy Girl", "Innocence", "Becoming (Part II)", "Who Are You?", "Forever", "The Gift", "Dead Things", and "I Will Remember You". IMO, she brings the most heart-wrenching performances. Plus, her comedic work is also fantastic. He snarky one liners are great.

                  Underrated:

I'd have to say Amy Acker, in this one. She plays so many different characters: shy, lonely Fred in Pylea who adores Angel; loving Gunn Fred; dark Fred; dying Fred; and Illyria. IMO, anyone who can play that many characters so flawlessly deserves all the recognition she can get. She's truly fantastic. And now that I see everyone's reaction here: Charisma Carpenter. I LOVE HER!

                  Dislike:

So hard, because I don't dislike many. I'd have to say David Boreanaz. I now most of you here seem to love his acting, but I felt he was really bland in BtVS and while he did have some great scenes, his day-to-day acting always fell short for me. I love him as Angelus, but when he's playing just Angel, he isn't as great. I think David Boreanaz is a GREAT ACTOR, as seen in "Bones" and dark!Angel, but the way he acted in this show never did it for me. Also, Seth Green. I felt he was very bland, and only had his sarcastic attitude, and that was it. I didn't see depth in his acting.

So many people think SMG is good? She seems to be out of a job at the moment however I think Aly is the best because, like some have said about alexis. she made Willow.
No one else could play that role.

And because she has been succesful in many things during/since buffy.
Like american pie. And currently has work on HIMYM and is doing a great job

These are my choices as actors:

My favorites on Buffy were female-Alyson and male-James with a close second of Tony

My favorites on Angel were female-Amy and male-James

Best on Buffy were female-Alyson and male-James and Tony

Best on Angel were female-Amy and Julie Benz and male-Alexis and James

Underrated on Buffy-Danny Strong and Emma Caulfield

Underrated on Angel- J. August Richards and Andy Hallett

                        Dislike on Buffy-Sarah Michelle Gellar

                        Dislike on Angel- Vincent Kartheiser

                          Buffy
Favorite: James Marsters. Throughout Seasons Two through Six he had so much charisma that he could really liven up any scene he was in.
Best: Sarah Michelle Gellar. Season Seven aside, she put forth fantastic effort into her role and sold me on every one of Buffy's emotions. Even if I hated what Buffy was doing, SMG's acting made me see her point of view and understand why Buffy was doing it.
Underrated: Emma Caulfield. Anya's not my favorite character, but I liked her well enough, largely due to EC. Anya's quirks are endearing instead of annoying thanks to her, and I don't think anyone else could make the audience empathize with a mass-murdering 1000-year-old vengeance demon the way she could.
Dislike: Not a big Marc Blucas fan. I don't think he made Riley very sympathetic during his vamp-sucking days.

                          Angel
Favorite: David Boreanaz is awesome. He does so well with the comedic scenes, the heart-breaking scenes, the macho/threatening/ass-kicking scenes...he's great.
Best: Tie between David Boreanaz and Alexis Denisof. I always thought that Alexis was average until Season Two, where he really brought layers into Wesley's character, and then during Season Three, he played Wesley's dilemma's extremely well.
Underrated: Vincent Kartheiser. Especially in A New World, Peace Out, and Home. I love the way he expresses his anger at Angel in the motel, his monologue to Cordelia, and his fight in the store with Angel, respectively. Origin also gets a mention for his little smirk after he gets the memories back that makes you just know that Connor is back.
Dislike: Sarah Thompson. Eve should have been exactly like Lilah, IMO. (Ooh! Stephanie Romanov should be on here somewhere. Ummm...underrated? Or favorite. I love her.) She was supposed to be sexy yet threatening, cool and confident-- ST acted too young and therefore seemed more way-out-of-her-league instead of in-charge like she should have been.
The story's kinda bland. It's about this guy named Dumbledore Calrissian who needs to return the ring back to Mordor.

Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't out of a job. She's currently shooting a new movie about a woman who wakes up in hospital after a failed suicide attempt.

Sarah's been incredibly busy since Btvs. She starred in 'The Grudge' 'Southland Tales' 'The Air I Breathe' 'The Return' 'Suburban Girl' and another movie which name escapes me at the moment. She's also been liked with playing Alice in a horror adaptation of the 'Alice In Wonderland Tale' which was a highly successful video game, has an upcoming guest spot in 'Robot Chicken' leant her voice to 'The Simpsons' for the character Gina, appeared briefly in 'The Grudge 2' and posed semi nude for 'Vaseline' dealing with skin care. She's also done charity work in Africa and was named 'Woman of the Year 2007' from Maxim magazine.

She was also offered to star in 'Stardust' but turned the role down so she could spend more time with her husband. Nearly all of her roles having been the main lead of the film and have been more daring and indie flicks than your regular ones.

She's been a busy little beaver.

Favourite: Sarah Michelle Gellar. Simply put I think she is just amazing, she can say so much with her eyes and her facial expressions. I mean she could kill in a dramatic scene but she also has great comedic timing. And her chemistry with most of the actors is fabulous. And though it is a combo of what comes out of the characters mouth (aka wirters) and the vision Joss had, I don't think Buffy would be the icon she is today if she had been played by a different actress. Plus she is on the short side and I loved seeing someone so little kick so much butt. I was very inspired.

The Best: Oh my lord this has to be the hardest for me. I really don't think I can pick just one actor or actress. So I will cheat and keep it to one per series. SMG for BtVS and Alexis Denisof for Ats. Look above for SMG and to talk about Alexis..I think his character went through the most transformations of any character in the verse but Alexis made each one real and keep the transition smooth. He could be adorable and geeky or completely dark and twisted yet he kept you a part of Wesley's journey so you saw his side and felt what he felt. Just a fantastic actor plain and simple.

Underated: David Boreanaz, his character's progression is second only to Wesley imo and DB makes Angel believable in his flaws and heroic nature. He never is over the top and with his character it would be so easy to cop out and loose the realism, but DB knows his character and protrays him perfectly. Angel my be my favorite character and it would not be so if DB didn't do the job he does in the role.

Dislikes:If I have to say someone it would be CC and VK. Cordelia is great with the comedy and being a loveable bitch but she looses me with the drama. I think VK (Connor) is a good actor I just didn't really care for him in the role, just something about him. I guess I didn't see the complexity I thought I should and I guess I just had a different picture of what Angel's son would literally look like and would act more... bad ass. I saw the scared and tortured little boy but that was the problem, I only saw a little boy, if he wasn't those things above I thought he was simply a brat and for me I wanted to see more than that. I guess Angel and Wesley spoiled me with their complex characters heehee.

A couple of honorable mentions :ASH (Giles) is so good I needed to at least mention him along with AA (Fred) and AH (Willow). Also I am embarrassed because I don't remeber is real name but as far as a guest star the man who plays Holtz was really great..i remember flipping when I saw him because before he played Holtz he played Mickey on the Equalizer who was such a good guy haha.

I agree with you 100% - except for the part about not being a favorite character, because Anya was my favorite. But that character could've easily become merely annoying, but Emma always managed to make Anya believable, funny, and touching.

I guess it's OT (so if mods think it should be (re)moved it's totally okay) but in all honesty while indeed she has been quite busy as the animal you mentioned, you cannot say that she's actually made it. And actually I don't get it because to me she seems quite talented. But - she hasn't made it to the A-list movies - and I guess that's OK because how many of places do you have up there in the Pantheon. But she hasn't starred in any little, quality or indie movies either. She has mostly been in films that are just plain average or bad and go straight to the DVD (with an exeption of The Grudge, which was in movie theatres but was average nevertheless). Perhaps she just somehow cannot make good judgements on the roles because if she really turned down a role in Stardust (which was actually played by Claire Danes) she really was a bit ... well, turning this down really was not a good decision. And I've always thought that they just dont offer poor Sarah better roles - but it seems that unfortunately she's capable to actually turn good one down.
And don't get me wrong here, I think she's great actress, but most of the movies shes made so far... not so great. I actually think it's much better to be TV-actress in quality series' than movie-actress in B and C and god knows what movies.
Now about this new film shes currently shooting, "a woman who wakes up in hospital after a failed suicide attempt" - this is called "Veronika decides to die" and it's based on a novel by Paulo Coelho - and I'm sorry to say but this book is total crap. It's basically a novel that takes a bunch of cheap "truths" (probably from fortune cookies) and presents them to you as revelations. This is a sort of book that the kind of people who haven't read anything after high school take and read and afterwards say: "This book changed my life", a book for those who think Dan Brown is literary fiction. So I'm a bit worried about this whole thing and I'm afraid Sarah might be landing on yet another dull project. There are too many good books that are made into average or worse movies. I'm afraid that bad books, too, are usually made into bad movies... or worse. But god knows, perhaps with right screenplay + acting... Anyhow I cross my fingers and hope the movie will be better than the book.

                                    For BTVS:

Favorite: James Marsters. He was so brilliant as Spike, with a great feel for Spike and what Spike was meant to be. He also had perfect comedic timing when needed.

Best: Alyson Hannigan. I'm SO glad they got rid of Riff Regan, because she was NOT Willow. Aly made Willow her own.

                                    Underrated: Tom Lenk. 'Nuff said.

Dislikes: Michelle Trachtenburg. I didn't like Dawn to begin with, but Michelle, although a good actress elsewhere, just didn't bring Dawn to life for me.

                                    For Angel:

Favorite: Glenn Quinn. His portrayal of the unlikely hero Doyle was very convincing, and he did such a good job creating a believable character, that I actually cried when Doyle was killed. I don't do that for a character very often. The cry factor is what earns him the vote from me.

Best: David Boreanaz. He may have been somewhat bland in BtVS, but on Angel, he is not only believable, but completely convincing. There is a difference between the two, I'll tell you. David was able to differentiate between Angel, Angelus, and Liam, proving he is a very talent and diverse actor. I am totally impressed by him.

Underrated: Eliza Dushku. She was only seen as the "Bad Girl" on Buffy, but in Angel, we see her humanity shining through. It was hearwrenching watching her in Five By Five and Sanctuary, especially as she urges Angel to kill her.

Disliked: Vincent Kartheiser. I really don't dislike him, but I can't really think of an actor from ATS that I DO actually dislike. I just hated Connor with a passion, he was so annoying...worse than Dawn IMO.
