What a random list! How the hell was James and the Giant Peach or Where's Wally banned? Who did that?

I was expecting the Marquis de Sade to crop up, but no mention. Wierd.

          I've read four of them:
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
          Goosebumps (Series) by R.L. Stine
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl

I really don't get the banning of James & the Giant Peach, it's just insane! But then again, I don't really understand why anyone would ban Of Mice & Men, it's like a classic?? Ah well, never mind.

So I got 9 which is the same score I got on the other list here on BF. I couldn't believe that some of these books were on the banned list. Other's I could totally see being on the banned list. Like Sex by Madonna. It's basically a book of Madonna in softcore porn pics. Yeah, that's something I would want my kid to go to the library and rent.

EDIT: I missed Where's Waldo so I have read 10!!!!!!

I looked it up..James and the Giant Peach has been censored/challenged over the years for a few reasons. For references to tobacco, disobedience to authority, and sexual references are a few of the "reasons". This list pertains to books challenged between 1990-2000. Most recent list I could find. I'm sure at some point the Da Vinci Code and a few others would make the list nowadays.

And why is Where's Waldo on here?

I am surprised to see The Bluest Eye on here. I guess any book that discusses race and society is always going to get challenged. Am surprised Ralph Emerson's Invisible Man didn't make the cut, actually.

Well whoever came up with those criteria i'm guessing is not a Buffy fan. Or an anything much fan really.

I'd still like to know what wally/waldo did. Does his hidey, sneakiness offend?

10/100. Why do people want to ban Bless Me, Ultima? It's not a great book, but I don't remember anything ban-worthy in it...

Also, is there a list of 100 most-banned books worldwide?
Buffy: It sounds like it's difficult for you. Maybe your sister makes it hard for you to establish your own identity. You said she's controlling, she doesn't let you make your own decisions -

Woot! 25! LMAO better than the other list. Though on this one I pretty much highlight ones I was pretty sure I read.

My favorite on here is Bridge to Terabithia. I read it many times as a kid. I was wrecked and even though it was such a horrible sadness, being so affected is still addictive. All of Patterson's books are so painfully sad, I had to stop searching new ones out. But I thought they were all very real in presenting to the world how life doesn't end with happily ever after or justice and therefore a book shouldn't have to either.

                            Lydia made the punch!

                              70. Lord of the Flies by William Golding
                              84. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain

                              89. Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene

33 (did I count right?) out of the top 100 banned books...damn, 1/3! I'm kinda impressed. Well...actually not that much since most of these are kids books and I did work in a kids bookstore for almost 4 years...

And of course, it's because they're almost all kids books (or books people are worried about kids reading) that they're banned...people are much more concerned with kids' reading/viewing habits than they are with other adults'. That's probably why Brave New World is here and not 1984...I've actually not read either, but I'm pretty sure brave new world has adolescent protaganists? Correct me if I'm wrong?

The strange thing - several of these books I read for English Lit class, and Stephen King? Oh, c'mon! Little Black Sambo?? As a child I never thought anything about the racial conotations. I loved when the Tigers ran in circles till they made butter! It was my favorite part!

The other books - Lord of the Flies (also, 1984, Animal Farm, The Ugly American) - summer reading in high school.
