  • How many of these 100 Books Have you read?

I found this meme on LJ and found it interesting, even if I think the list of books included is a little random (especially in some of the modern books it chose). Feel free to fill it out and post your own results below--here are mine:

The Big Read thinks the average adult has only read six of the top 100 books they've printed below.

    01. Look at the list and bold those you have read.
    02. Italicise those you intend to read.
    03.Underline the books you LOVE.
    04. Strike-through the books you consider unreadable.
    05. Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've only read 6 and force books upon them.

Yes! Coming in with a whopping 8!!!!!!! Now to be honest I can't remember all the books I've ever read and I sure as hell can't differentiate between whether I've only seen the movie and never read the book or have done both. Like The Secret Garden, it was one of my favorite movies as a child but I can't remember if I ever read the book or not. Plus how can they count the entire Harry Potter series as one book?

Well at least you've read more than six!

And I know what you mean about The Secret Garden, I loved that movie as a kid too (the Hallmark version that is where they show the parents dying in the beginning--very creepy!), but only just remembered that I DID read the book for school in fourth grade....and had trouble b/c of the Cockney accents in it! *amends list*

Exactly! That's what I was aiming for. It's not like I've only ever read 8 books my entire life, I just haven't read the one's on that list. Big deal.

                    100. Les Miserables - Victor Hugo

It really is a bit random selection on the modern novels. Why for example include Niffenegger (which is fairly good I've heard but not THAT good). And theres nothing from John Banville or William Boyd for example. And why the hell is that trash "Da Vinci Code" on the must-read list?! I personally want back my 4 hours I spent with this "book".
Here are many books that I for some reason missed as a child/teenager and I find there's no reason for me to read them now (e.g Les Miserables, Three Musketeers, Monte-Cristo) and I do know the plot anyway and can discuss the books to the certain extent, so they do exist in my "cultural library" in a way anyway

So, the result is 33, I hoped it was more, actually.

9/100 books on this list. I know that sounds sad, but in reality I have read hundreds upon hundreds of books in my life so far...they just don't seem to be on this list. One day I plan to read as many of the classics/ controversial books as I can....I'm only 22..I think I have enough years left.

I have no idea if I've read it or not. I know of the book but can't remember details of the story so I'm fairly certain I haven't read it. But if we're going to sit here and be all defensive for not reading a certain book, I have some defensiveness for you! How could you NOT have read To Kill A Mockingbird?!

BTW I'm really liking Larisa's defense though. She's 22 and read 9, I'm 18 and read 8. We both still have some years left to cram in another 91/92 books.

                          I've read these:

                          5. To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
                          10. Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
                          11. Little Women - Louisa M Alcott
                          18. Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger
                          22. The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
                          30. The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame
                          36. The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
                          40. Winnie the Pooh - AA Milne
                          41. Animal Farm - George Orwell
                          46. Anne of Green Gables - LM Montgomery
                          61. Of Mice and Men - John Steinbeck
                          62. Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
                          68. Bridget Jones' Diary - Helen Fielding
                          73. The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett
                          81. A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens
                          83. The Color Purple - Alice Walker
                          84. The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro
                          85. Madame Bovary - Gustave Flaubert
                          87. Charlotte's Web - EB White
                          91. Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
                          98. Hamlet - William Shakespeare

But I honestly don't remember a lot of them because I read them when I was so young.

My faves from the list are Lolita and The Catcher in the Rye. Oh man, both of those are so fluid and striking and in completely different ways. I recommend them to everyone.

There's a few on the list I wouldn't mind reading and even more that I wouldn't mind never ever reading.

I have a degree in Fiction Writing and as you could imagine, that involved quite a bit of reading. SO the fact that I have not read the bulk of that list does not disturb me. I mean,, come one, like I am ever going to sit down and read the whole damn Bible. Or series that I have no interest in, i.e. HP, LotR, Narnia. Or the complete works of Shakespeare. I've read a lot of his works but seriously...the guy has a freakin' catalogue! You wouldn't many people who have read everything of his!

At the moment I'm working on reading every single Bill Bryson I've got 3 more to go! And I've got Ewan McGregor's Long Way Down to read plus a proper dusty old tome about Shakespeare, written in 1898, I've read a bit and it's really good!

I have a wonderful reason for not reading books such as To Kill a Mockingbird and other classics that most people would have read in school. The years in school that a student would have read such novels, I had complete idiots as English/Literature teachers. One teacher actually had to pull out her books that she used in college to understand Julius Caesar. The one decent teacher that we had, had to go by the school approved reading book that we were given. It had Great Expectations, Shakespeare, Pygmalion...that stuff. But none of the great classics. I blame it all on a redneck education.
