    AFA: Awards Ceremony 2008

The AFA is the newly formed 'Academy of Fan Artists' and this group aims to support and honour the many fabulous artists in our community, and as such, hold an annual award ceremony to celebrate the art produced in each year. This is a new idea, and I hope to see multiple artists sign up and join in on what could potentially be a really exciting and enjoyable ceremony.

In order to honour, the artwork of 2007, I thought that it might be nice to create an "Awards Ceremony" and vote for our favourite pieces from 2007. And since we will of course be having other award ceremonies early in the upcoming year, I thought it would be nice to follow the tradition of the Academy Awards, creating our very own "Academy of Fanart Artists", or the AFA.

If you join the AFA, you will be permitted to submit one wallpaper to each category of the awards; and you will be able to vote for your top five in each category. However, in joining the AFA you are agreeing to vote ? as these votes will be counted in order to find our winners. So, I must ask, only join up, if you are prepared to take the time and pick out your top five in a number of categories.

For more information on this awards ceremony please take the time to browse around the site located at http://left-unspoken.net/awards, and check out the rules before applying to join up. Nominations will begin on the 1st of January 2008, so make sure you are prepared for the nomination period, and keep up to date with the the nominations, voting, and award ceremony dates by checking back regularly!

Please also check out the AFA needs you section, I am looking for ways on how you think the ceremony itself should be organised, and prefered times to suit a lot of the members! So in saying that feel free to leave questions, suggestions, comments etc. here, I'll be checking back regularly to see what is being said.

I hope to get a lot of artists involved, and a lot of nominations for the categories, so spreading the word to other artists not on the forum is appreciated!

Final plea: I'll also be looking for volunteers to design some awards, so that we get a mixture of styles on these as well, so if you feel like you can take the time to design an award or two, check out the categories and let me know what you would like to do, and I'll mark you down for it!

I look forward to this ceremony, and hope that it goes well, and I hope that it is enjoyable and fun for everyone else too!
    *hugs*

I figured I would try and get it online about now, to give artists the chance to figure out what pieces they are going to nominate, once nominations open...That plus, I wanted to try and spread the word before the nominations began.

I hope to get enough entries in each category, I wasn't sure what the popular shows were, so I used the forum as kind of a guideline... but am open to suggestions of how to change the categories prior to the nominations beginning. I was tempted to split SPN episodic into seasons, since it has been quite popular this year in terms of art... but I'm not sure how many entries I would get for s3 or s1. Oh well!

I just really liked the idea, of it being the fanart community as a whole that decided the winners, rather than awards sites where you get one or two judges picking their favourites. So, we'll soon see if it works out or not!

Definitely. People need some time to think it over and sign up. I am sure a lot of people will be willing to participate. Lately the fanart section is very quiet and maybe this is a good opportunity to get people out of their funk.

Well, I think this board is a good indication. Some fanart threads went down considerably, like the VM fanart thread. Others really were more busy, like the Misc. Fanart thread. SN surely is one of the most popular ones, I am not sure how many people still made S1 fanart in 07, I know I didn't, but a lot of people only joined the SN love this year and so it's entirely possible that you would get enough entries if you split it up. Although not much S3 art so far. I'll think about the categories, if I have any ideas, I'll let you know.

That's pretty much my way of thinking... I thought VM still had a few pieces made this year, enough to justify a category for itself you know? Much like Heroes it has a few artists that have done pieces for it, but not enough to give it extra categories within the show.

There are a lot of people who have done SPN art this year, and a lot of new artists who have joined the trend. I know I've made a few s1 pieces this year, and there's other artists who have too... but not sure there are enough for it to stand alone. S2 on the other hand has had a whole pile of pieces this year. I think there have been a fair few s3 pieces done already this season, just not as much as after S2 aired... I know I've seen some awesome pieces from yourself, Jenni-Lou, but a lot of the S3 art has actually been character, or couple related, the amount of Sam/Ruby walls I have seen is amazing!

Linda suggested a Charmed category, but not so sure there's many artists who have done Charmed pieces this year. I'm afraid I think I'll be keeping that in the Misc category. I'm still not 100% certain about the pilot season category, as I know I've seen a few gossip girl pieces, or pushing daisies etc, and I know I've done Moonlight... but not sure there's going to be a whole lot of entries!

It's difficult. If you look at the replies in the fanart section, there's no doubt that BtVS (176 replies) and SN (107 replies) are the leading show categories. The Misc. Section is the only section that's as popular as well (124 replies). If you give AtS a section of its own (53 replies) you might have to consider to give VM (35) one as well. Heroes is a lot less popular (19), but you have a better comparison when you look at the fanart archives that you host. How do '9th Wonders' and 'Superfine' do with new fanart entries? Would they justify a category of its own?

Yeah, we had a lot of newcomers to the SN fanart community this year and I recall quite a lot of S1 entries for 07. S3 had less entries so far as S2 had last year. Again, maybe we should look to 'Provenance' to see if it deserves a split. On the other hand, SN would be the only category with a seasonal split then, would that be fair in regard to the other shows?

I don't see a category of its own for Charmed either. I think it would be best in the Misc. Section. I haven't seen many entries for the new shows yet, mostly some Moonlight pieces. I have no real idea yet on how to best organise that section.

I have a question. Do you have to own a website to sign up for the AFA cause I haven't but I'd really like to sign up, I love the idea.

For the categories, if I can make a suggestion, I think the AFA would be more popular with more general nominations as: Best Unique Piece, Best Blending, Best Haunting Piece, Best Colorful Piece, Best Crazy Piece, Best Unregulared Sized Piece, Best Boxy-Style Piece, Best Guest-Character Piece, Best Two-Colors Piece even Best Bad-Episode Piece. Cause as it been said, a lot of Pieces here are Buffy's so I think the more categories people could apply to, the more people would sign-up...

You don't need a website to join up and vote... so long as you are a 'fan artist' and have more than 20 pieces posted online (which I'm sure you probably have on these forums) then you are eligible... I just made that rule to make it for the fanart community, rather than for lots of random people trying to join up and gate-crash as such, :P

Hey hun, see my reply above about joining up for voting/nominating...

Also, I had thought about the lots of categories for different styles etc... but there are just so many that I wouldn't know which to include and which not to... and some people may prefer I do one and not another, while others feel the opposite... I thought doing it by shows, and categories like that, it would be easy for someone to know what piece falls into what category, the categories would be much clearer for when it comes to nominating etc, and also I think it's nicer to see lots of different styles and techniques within a category.

I go have additional categories however, such as: best Drama piece, best comedy piece, best tearjerker, and so on, I think I did about 4 of these... love scene I think was theother, to cover some of that ground, and open it up to a multitude of shows...

But, depending on discussions go prior to the nominations opening, it all may change!

You don't need to enter into every category. You don't even need to enter in every BtVS category, you just enter the BtVS pieces that you want to contribute and leave the rest. I only did SN art this year, so I'll enter in the 3 SN categories and that's it.

I doubt many artists would join up if they had to do that! Especially so close to Christmas!

Oh, I have another question: How about wallpaper remakes? Can we enter them or does only the date of the original art count? And what if people wish to enter the same wallpaper into 2 different categories, can they do that? For example if I think my best episodic SN wallpaper would also be my biggest tearjearker one, could I enter it in 2 categories?

Heh thanks hun, yes basically the bottom line is you only enter in the categories that you have pieces for, you are allowed one entry per category... so if you have pieces that fall into three of the categories, then you can enter 3 pieces... alternatively, if you can enter them all, you can do that too!

And Chris hun, I do hope to see some pieces entered in the other categories such as:
Best Tearjerker, or Best Drama, etc I'm sure you could find some more pieces... and forgive me if I'm wrong, but didn't I see a Wonderfalls piece earlier this year? I'm sure there's plenty of categories your art will fit into,

You do not need to nominate any pieces to vote, so long as you are a member, you will still recieve the voting form when I send them out.

I would say that remakes are new pieces of art based on old pieces... so, I'd say you can enter them... but, if all you did was change the colouring or something I would say no...(although with the awesome re-makes you have done, like The Mask, I am sure this doesn't apply to you!)
