Could we post not only fanfiction but original fiction (i.e. short stories) that doesn't have to do with any fandom somewhere? 'Cause I would like to, but I don't know where to, because it's not really fanfiction, y'know?

Yes, you can post those sorts of things in the Misc forum. Like right now there is a poetry thread in there. So feel free to start a new thread in Misc if you would like.

The Other Fiction subforum is still for fanficiton. It's just for other shows besides Jossverse stuff. (I never venture into the fanficiton forum because I don't read fanfic. It would be strange to have original fiction in there; I wouldn't even know to look there for it! )

Thus, the fanficiton forum is just for fanfiction. So as far as I know, the original fiction would belong in the misc forum. But you can always run that by Nikki. I do not believe it is popular enough to warrant it's own subsection somewhere. Not yet anyway.

Well having it placed in "Other Fiction" doesn't seem like a bad idea. In the thread title the person could always just include something like "Original story" or something to that extent.

It makes more sense to me to place original fiction with the fanfiction since the same kind of viewers are likely to look at both. Especially if it's going to be writings from established fanfiction writers.

I'd chime in that most of the reading audience probably assumes to go to the fanfic section... maybe that is where an "original fiction" subforum belongs, just to make sure it gets better "pedestrian traffic".

Hey, I'm just saying, as someone who does not read fanfiction but does read other fiction, I wouldn't enter a forum labeled "Fanficiton." I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea to have all the fiction together, I just know that I wouldn't bother looking in a fanfic section under any circumstance and thus, I would not find original stories. I don't think it's completely fair to assume that most of the reading population would assume to go to the fanfic section for stories that aren't fandom related. I sure wouldn't!

In any case, it's something Nikki should look at and decide on. Although I have to say that original fiction isn't fandom related and therefore probably belongs in a forum without post count activated. We do have a subforum in Misc for books and movies and the like. Even posts don't count in there.

Just food for thought. I guess you could always change the name of the forum from Fanficiton to Fiction. I don't know how popular non-fanficiton would be though. :/

Well, fiction is highly popular. Some BFers were actually going to make a non-fanfiction series

I think posts should definitely count for any sort of fiction/writing. It takes huge effort, and just like fanart, not everything should be fandom related. I mean, Fanart DOES have the miscellaneous fanart thread, which could be for anything, including pets, family, etc.

I hear you. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Fiction Writing. Seriously I do. So I know the effort that goes into it and I'm not against post count. I just don't like the idea of it being tucked in a Fanficiton forum. Because it's not fanficiton. I know that forum is very popular but I just don't think it fits there unless the whole forum is renamed. It might seem picky but that's just the way I feel. Like I wrote before, I would never think to look in a fanfic forum for original fiction. I can't be the only one feels that way, can I?

Also, it looks like this question was posed back in August in the fanfic rules/faq thread and was never answered. Therefore, I can't state with authority what the correct answer is. Seems like this question came at a good time. Now it can be answered once and for all! Erm, once Nikki gets online, that is.

Well since I'll be snoozin' when Nikki and Jo come along, I'll place my vote that original fiction belongs in the fanfiction section.

If I was looking for stories, that's where I'd head. I may not be looking for original fiction, but I could easily stumble across it while I was looking at fanfiction. Miscellaneous sections often just tend be a chatty random zone. In addition, after 30 days of non posting the thread goes to dead threads. And it doesn't seem right that a fiction story just disappear. The Fanfiction section has an archive section so that threads don't seem to disappear.

In addition I don't think original fiction deserves less honor than fanfiction on this board. It seems like a valid contribution towards the forum and that is why post count is turned on and off in certain sections.

I believe the poetry thread was usually in the miscellaneous section because it could be something as short as a haiku or utterly random, free flowing and spontaneous.

I don't see why we can't change the Fanfiction name section from "Fanfiction" to "Fanfiction and Other Writings" or something to that effect, and then just add in a section titled 'Fiction and Poetry' or 'Fiction and Other Writing Styles' you know something like that.

I think that would help and that way fiction writings can get counted towards post counting and everything would work out honky-dory. Yes, I really did just say 'honky-dory'.

It would be kind of cool to see people post original fiction. It would give the forum kind of a fresh look breath of air from some of the fanfiction we got. New characters and new verses, it'd be interesting to see what people could come up with.

I agree with Joe on the name change, kind of give it a more broad stroke.

Ok I'm with Joe, I think I will rename the 'Other Fanfiction' section to "Fanfiction and Other Writings".. or similar, I want to check with Jo first.

That other fanfiction section is practically empty. I don't see there is a need to create another section which might only end up with 5 or so threads when we can put them together and still not have the section as ful as the Joss fic one is.

I do agree writing needs to be rewarded with post count and this does seem the best way to go about finding room for other fiction. So once I've had a chat with Jo and the other mods we'll see about that change
