Default New Firefly Short Stories

From Sci Fi Wire.com...

Quote:
Joss Whedon's beloved Firefly/Serenity is long gone, but you can't stop the signal: Fans can look for more adventures of Capt. Mal Reynolds and the crew of the doughty ship in a series of short stories coming soon from Titan Books.

Writer/producer Jane Espenson—who wrote one episode of the Fox sci-fi series but is a longtime friend and colleague of Whedon's going back to her days on Buffy the Vampire Slayer—told us that she will be writing one of the stories, centering on the characters of Kaylee and Wash (obviously set in a time period before the events of the movie Serenity).

"I'm writing a short story set in the Firefly universe that someone's putting together," Espenson said in an interview on Sunday in Pasadena, Calif., where she was promoting her upcoming Syfy series Caprica. "Titan Books is putting together a collection written by various of the Firefly writers. But [it's a] very short story, ... 2,000 words."

She added: "Oh, I just came up with a very clever little short story that involves Kaylee and Wash, two characters that we haven't seen together that much."

Espenson's Firefly episode was "Shindig," the fourth episode in the series, which deals with a society dance and a duel. It's best loved by fans for Kaylee's appearance in an over-the-top flouncy ruffled dress.

Espenson is an executive producer of Caprica, the Battlestar Galactica prequel series, which debuts on Syfy at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Jan. 22.

We'll try to get more information about the book and when it might be coming out soon, so check back!
Cool huh? Are these stories consisted canon, I wonder?

I was excited to see that Espenson is producing Caprica. Also, 'Shindig' is my all-time favorite Firefly ep.

Yeah this is pretty neat. I actually just heard about this, but now that I'm thinking this over it is fantastic news. I've always thought Firefly would have done extremely well as a book series, or in some novelized format that expanded the universe. If it worked for Star Wars and Star Trek, and even non-canon Buffy and Angel books, why not Firefly? There are some huge sci-fi book readers out their, so to not try and put this series on the market just seems foolish on Whedon's part to me. No disrespect intended though. I'm definitely happy this is happening though. Hopefully it spawns lots of novels afterwards.

As for canon, I'm not really sure. God do I hope so though.

Yeah, I agree. I'd definitely buy the books. Firefly had such a complex universe with so much that could have been expanded upon. There's loads of potential there for a series.

Yeah I'd most likely pick them up because my favourite ever buffy book was co written by Espenson, (Chris Golden was the main author) Plus Kaylee and Wash 2 of my favourite characters.

Shin dig however was one of the better episodes but not the best imo.

Very nice! I'm all for books that tell more stories about my favorite television characters. I own and have read most of the Buffy books that are out, as well as the Supernatural books and a bunch of movie-tie-in books. I have also read the Serenity tie-in book, which I found pleasant to read.

I certainly hope these will be canon stories, based around the Firefly crew or maybe a short story that delvies more into the mythology of the Firefly universe.

Does anyone know what the title would be and the possible release date?

Jack, just out of curiousity, which book was that? The Lost Slayer? If so, definitely one of the best! Christopher Golden and Nancy Holder are the best Buffy book writers IMO.

Hopefully this isn't counted as a spam post, but I just wanted to see if anyone knew of any updates about this? I tried searching but came up empty. Has anyone else heard anything or had any luck? I could understand if it's being kept under wraps for a while...but I kinda want more info about it now.
