Default Buffy Forums Rules and Posting Guidelines

Hi! Welcome to Buffy Forums. On behalf of the staff and members here I would like to say that we are pleased that you have found us. Before you start posting, however, there are a few things you should know.

    The rules

    No spamming
    What is spamming, for us its;
    • It is a post(s) that does not pertain to the subject of the thread.
    • Posts that are less than a sentence are spam, too. Don't do it.
    • Posts that for some reason donít add anything to the ongoing discussion. We donít like posts just agreeing with someone. If you donít have anything to add then donít post it, PM it!
    • Also please note that double posting is spam, we have an edit post option if you forgot to mention something.
    • Starting duplicate threads is spamming.
    • Posting in what's known as text language (ie. 'bangel rox u no coz itz wotz ment 2 b) is horrible and is considered spamming
While we know for some members, English is their second or even third language, this doesn't allow for really bad grammar.

If you want your post to be read, I suggest using capitals in the right places, paragraphs, so your post is easier to get through; full stops and commas where appropriate. You won't be in trouble if you don't use correct punctuation, but many members will probably skip over your posts.

Look before you post. Make sure there are no existing threads about the topic you wish to discuss. If you make what we call a "duplicate thread" then we will close it and send it away without warning. BW is a big place and we need to work together to keep it as organized as possible.

    No insulting
Sounds obvious, I realize, but it needs to be said. We have had problems with this. So just respect one another.

    No linking other forums
This means no promoting or linking other message boards, other online stores, or shareware sites. You are allowed to post a link to your website, or put it in your profile, as long as there is no forum attached to it. Mass advertising will result in a ban.

    No unmarked spoilers
Some people don't want know what's going happen next. Don't ruin it for them. We have a spoiler threads in most of the show sections where rumours can be posted and discussed.

    No talking about downloading episodes
I know you want to see them, but hey, it's illegal and we don't condone it. We like BW and don't want to see it shut down because of impatience.

Have fun. I promise we aren't as scary as we seem. This is a great community to share your passions and obsessions with others like you. But as with most things in life, there are rules.

It's extremely important you respect these terms, as lots of work as gone into this forum by many people. These are all here for a reason. We've been around for awhile now and we have learned the hard way about negative things that can happen if we don't have some basic rules to follow.

If you have any questions please refer to our FAQ Thread.

That's it. I'll be seeing you around the boards. If you have any questions, you can PM (that's private message--the "pm" button under a user's post) any of us moderators/administrators and we will get back to you ASAP. There is almost always a mod online here. You will find their names in bold at the bottom of the main forum page.

We hope you find all of Buffyforums to be a fun place to openly and seriously discuss topics. There have been some misconceptions about what is respectful attitude.

For the most part, members are very respectful. But sometimes there has been an atmosphere of the section is a warzone where you have to go to battle or be ready to defend yourself when provoked because no one else will. This place is a forum, not an arena. There is no "winning" or "losing" an argument or a debate. There is just discussion.

As passions run high sometimes we forget how our written words come across to others. It is important for everyone to respect each other so we can all get along regardless of our opinions.

Moderators are not here to micromanage you or your limit your content. Nor are we here to protect certain issues even if we believe in them. There may be content or words that you find offensive because of personal beliefs. We ask you to be tolerant of others and their opinions.

    Basically, our policies are:

    1. Respect others when posting.
    2. Tolerate others when reading.

As simple as we think the rules, I have collected some of the issues and questions that seem to arise frequently. Please read through them to familiarize yourself.

Members need to respect each other. The moderators expect everyone to act like mature adults. This is by far not an exhaustive list.

    General Behavior:

    • No name calling or insulting of members.
    • No demeaning of other's opinions as useless or not based in fact.
    • Do not demand other members respond to your questions. They may have you on Ignore. They may realize the futility of trying to get you to understand why they have their opinion. A person is entitled to make one post with their opinion and not get into a discussion.
    • Limit use of sarcasm. What sounds witty to you while writing it, probably just sounds rude to those reading the words.
    • Interpret posts at face value. Do not think another is trying to insult or discredit you.
    • Report posts that violate behavior. Do not engage in "defending" yourself or retaliating with similar attitude.
    • Use the "Ignore" function on members whose opinions or behavior you can't accept.

    • Not everyone is a native speaker of English.
    • The forum is about sharing opinions. It is not about proving your opinion right or another person's wrong.
    • Use, "I disagree", and go into your opinion.
    • Use, "In my opinion." Do not present your opinion and interpretations as fact.
    • It is acceptable to bold or all cap another person's name in order to get their attention amongst all the text and posts. Do not take this as being rude. However, other bolding or all caps should be limited as it is typically considered to be shouting or angry.
    • Characters are not protected against rude comments. Do not be personally offended by a member who says something you don't like about a character you love.
    • In addition, it is okay to not be a fan of Joss Whedon or other creative member of BTVS or ATS. They are not members so are not protected against rude comments. However, they are people too so limit anything rude you say and be more constructive in why you dislike them rather than name calling.

It should go without saying, but opening up multiple accounts is considered troll behavior and will be treated decisively.

    Lydia made the punch!
