Interesting. Buffy – Der Vampir-Jägerin doesn't sound half bad, I mean, after you brain bleach the mental image of Buffy, in camouflage pants, stalking the woods with a hunting rifle

I wonder what will happen when the discussion about non-binary pronouns comes to Germany. They're gonna need non-binary nouns.

In Norwegian, the show is called Buffy, vampyrenes skrekk which translates to Buffy, Terror of Vampires. But she is described as a vampyrjeger, just like in German. The only other option would be vampyrslakter, which translates to butcher, but that sounds a little too morbid.

No. In Russian one of meanings of word "истребитель" is "fighter aircraft", but in no case you could translate it as just a "fighter". It more of "exterminator" or "eradicator". Or, you now, "slayer".

As for dubbing. There's two main way it's usually done. Full voice dubbing, when original voices are replaced and overdubbing (probably not right word to use, but it describes it well enough), when translation goes over original voices. Good full voice dubbing requires some amount of capable voice actors (obviously) and some amount of translation work to adapt it for length and lip sync. If it's done well results are very good, if not they are horrible. In USSR times industry of voice dubbing was excellent. Many very good actors were also voice actors. Very often same voice actor was used for all roles of particular foreign actor. Such consistency was good for immersion. I, when see pictures of Louis de Funes or Fernandel, still hear in my head voices of Kenigson and Vesnik. Nowadays it's completely different story. Lack of good actors together with much more content for dubbing makes fully dubbed movies clearly inferior in comparison to original. And I don't know how it's right now as I don't watch dubbed movies since internet became available and affordable, but in late 90s, yearly 2000s, even quality of script translation was horrible.

Overdubbing from other side doesn't require neither good actors, nor such amount of work. You still hear all the original voices and dubbing work just like loud subtitles. I was actually completely fine with it. I remember watching Simpsons where different seasons had different dubbing and as much as I loved Simpsons I couldn't make myself watch fully dubbed episodes, but had no problem with overdubbed ones.

Most Russian viewers wouldn't watch subbed movies. Including me. I remember one time there was subbed movie on federal TV channel. I think it was "Eyes wide shut". I couldn't watch it more than half an hour. Only very small amount of viewers would prefer subtitles. You can easily see that on torrent trackers where any new popular American or British TV show is usually dubbed by amateur groups. Subs only torrents are much less popular than that with voice dubbing (done by complete amateurs).

And movie studios understand this fact well enough. In fact biggest ones like Disney not only demand full voice dubbing for their works for Russian market but even oversee it. Everything requires approval starting from list of voice actors.

TTB had mentioned "Run, Lola, Run" that was dubbed in English and had shown on Serbian TV instead of original. I know much more stupid example. Several seasons of Spanish TV show were dubbed for Russian TV. But they didn't take original version for it. They took French version that already had full voice dubbing and write Russian voices over it. To make it even more hilarious , Spanish, French and Russian names of this TV show had absolutely nothing in common between them.

Would someone cute and sweet put up the lyrics to the French version of I’ve Got A Theory and Walk Through the Fire? I’ve been listening to them non-stop. Just love those ensemble songs.

Aw, I'm glad you're enjoying them! I think they sound amazing in French, too.

Walk Through the Fire French Version

    Spoiler:

I want a fire that bites
In the smoke, she calls me
To guide me through the flames
    To save us
    or maybe escape
    Who knows what's going on
So I walk in the flames
    No way I go back
And I walk in the flames
    As long as they ...
    As long as they ...

Spike: She does not care what I do
    I'm free if Buffy breaks
    I have to help her
Sweet: Because she only wants the flames
    No nobody learns anything
Spike: She does not learn anything
And she walks in the flames
    Until they ...

Giles: Can all this change it?
    I left Dawn well
And my Slayer may go too far
Alex: But if Buffy remains helpless
Anya: We have the choice, fight without waiting
    Or stay there doing nothing

    All: Fight again here,
    this is our fate
So we walk in the flames

Buffy: One after the other, they abandon me
I think they are afraid of the cold
Tara --- We are not afraid,
    Buffy: I'm ice cream
    I will not tell you
    Tara --- we are together
Buffy: They will not know why

    Anya: They recognize each other
Spike: He'll kill her, I'll save her
Buffy: One after the other, they come to me
Tara In the realm of the shadows everything disappears
    Buffy like an automaton
Demon It is destiny that drives them

Spike Nothing will save her, I'll kill her
Demon I will destroy dreams that blaze
Willow This sentence is only there to furnish
    Demon deep within themselves
Giles How to hit the spark that passes?
    Buffy Those long days
    will ignite in a fire
    Demon You will not escape

All And we hide in the flames
    But no one goes back
So we walk in the flames
    As long as they burn,
    that they burn,
    that they burn,
    they burn

I've Got A Theory French Version:

    Spoiler:

Giles: Me, I have a theory, it's like a demon
    He dances, the demon,
No it's not that, I think we're getting lost
Willow: Me I have a theory, it's a little child
Dreaming of songs that lock us into this bad nightmare
Alex: That this theory seems clumsy

All: But Buffy what do these weird melodies mean?
    that amaze us?
Alex: Witches maybe, they are witches
    But no it's ridiculous,
    the witches are persecuted
    And a thousand pardons,
    and I love the Earth,
    and long live the women
    And I'd better shut up
Anya: Me, I have a theory,
    smart rabbits
    Tara: Me, I have a ...

Anya: They are more hostile than everyone assumes
With their papatte p'tites, and their big nose all pink
    What is it like carrots
And this desire to see it so clear, what is it for?
Rabbits, rabbits, I think they are rabbits !!
    Or maybe you're a dwarf
Willow: This whole theory seems clumsy

All: But Buffy But the case seems very serious, we must be debating
Buffy: Me, I have a theory, it's not important
Together we are really the best
Nothing and no one can scare us
The Apocalypse is more of a mystery
The same false tracks, do not worry
All: Must be immersed in the heart of the action
    To find a solution
It must be broken, or it must pass
    Death is here
    Buffy: I've died twice
The Ensemble Group: we are really the best
Giles --- We are the best
The Nothing and No People Group can scare us

(I have to say, I prefer the original to some of these alterations...Buffy says she's ice cream?!) For comparison, these are the originals:

Walk Through the Fire English Original:

    Spoiler:

    [Buffy]
I touch the fire and it freezes me
I look into it and it's black
    Why can't I feel?
My skin should crack and peel
    I want the fire back

Now, through the smoke she calls to me
To make my way across the flame
To save the day or maybe melt away
I guess it's all the same

So, I will walk through the fire
Cause where else can I turn?
I will walk through the fire
    And let it—

    [Spike]
The torch I bear is scorching me
And Buffy's laughing I've no doubt
    I hope she fries
I'm free if that bitch dies!
    I better help her out...

    [Sweet]
Cause she is drawn to the fire

    [Sweet/Spike]
Some people never learn/She will never learn

    [Spike and Sweet]
And she will walk through the fire
    And let it—

    [Giles]
Will this do a thing to change her?
Am I leaving Dawn in danger?
Is my slayer too far gone to care?

    [Xander]
What if Buffy can't defeat it?

    [Anya]
    Beady Eyes is right
    We're needed!
...Or we could just sit around and glare

[Anya, Giles, Tara, Willow and Xander]
    We'll see it through
It's what we're always here to do
So, we will walk through the fire...

    [Buffy]
So one by one, they turn from me
I guess my friends can't face the cold

    [Tara]
    What can't we face

    [Buffy]
But why I froze, not one among them knows

    [Tara]
    If we're together?

    [Buffy]
    And never can be told

[Anya]: She came from the grave much graver [Sweet]: So one by one,
[Spike]: First, he'll kill her, then I'll save her They come to me
[Tara]: Everything is turning out so dark The distant redness as their guide
    [Buffy]: Going through the motions
[Spike]: No, I'll save her, then I'll kill her But what they find
[Willow]: I think this line's mostly filler Ain't what they had in mind Walking through the part
[Giles]: What's it going to take to strike a spark? It's what they have inside
She will come to me! These endless days are finally ending in a blaze
[Buffy, Anya, Giles, Spike, Tara, Willow and Xander]
And we are caught in the fire
At the point of no return
So we will walk through the fire
    And let it
    Burn
    Let it burn
    Let it burn
    Let it burn

I've Got A Thoery English Original:

    Spoiler:

Giles: I’ve got a theory that it’s a demon! A dancing demon? No something isn’t right there.
Willow: I’ve got a theory some kid is dreaming, and we’re all stuck inside his wacky broad way nightmare.
Xander: I’ve got a theory we should work this out.
Anya, Tara & Willow: It’s getting eerie what’s this cheery singing all about?

Xander: It could be witches, some evil witches! Which is ridiculous 'cause witches they were persecuted. Wicca good and love
the earth and women power and I'll be over here.
Anya: I’ve got a theory, it could be bunnies!
    Tara: I’ve got a theory-

Anya: Bunnies aren’t just cute like everyone supposes. They got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses, and what’s with
all the carrots!? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway!? Bunnies, bunnies, it must be bunnies!! Or maybe midgets…
Willow: I’ve got a theory we should work this fast
Willow & Giles: Because it clearly could get serious before it’s passed.

Buffy: I’ve got a theory, it doesn’t matter. What can’t we face if we’re together? What’s in this place that we can’t
weather. Apocalypse? We’ve all been there. The same old trips, why should we care?
Buffy, Giles, Anya, Willow, Tara & Xander: What can't we do if we get in it. We'll work it through within a minute. We have
to try, we\'ll pay the price. It's do or die.
    Buffy: Hey I’ve died twice.

Buffy, Giles, Anya, Willow, Tara & Xander: What can't we face if we're together.
    Giles: What can’t we face?
Buffy, Giles, Anya, Willow, Tara & Xander: What's in this place that we can't weather?
    Giles: If we’re together
Buffy, Giles, Anya, Willow, Tara & Xander: There’s nothing we can’t face
    Anya: Except for bunnies.

Where did you get the English translations from, SpuffyGlitz? Are you sure the French lyrics were translated back to English by hand and not by Google translate or something? I didn't study them closely but I did look up the "ice cream" example (which indeed sounds pretty nonsensical) and what the French version of the song says is "Je suis de glace", which means "I am made of ice". "Glace" can also mean ice cream, but that's clearly NOT what is intended here so this really makes me doubt the quality of these translations back to English.

I suspected as much -- I didn't have the time so I just posted what I had got on the lyrics from an old site (accessed on the BuffyBoards). I'd saved these from there. I can't find the link to where I got the translations from and I didn't have time to look through the actual French lyrics --- but I did suspect the translations weren't correct, it was a fansite. The ice cream thing sounds way too absurd! It's why I posted a link to the actual French lyrics so we could go back to them later.

I just watched a random Buffy scene on YouTube in German. I usually never do this but I wanted to check something. When we adress someone in Germany we can do it either in a formal way or an informal way. The formal way is calling them by their last name and addressing them with something I can only translate to "THEE". The informal way is using the first name and "YOU".

Does any other language have a distinction in the way you adress people that is similar to that?

Anyway I was watching a scene with Buffy and Giles and she was addressing him in the formal way, which was just so very weird.

Isn't it a formality at the level of grammar - Sie? In which case, English doesn't have that. As you say - it's odd because it alters the relationship.

Yes, in Dutch we also have informal and formal pronouns. I'll check the Dutch subtitles on my DVDs to see how Giles is addressed in those. I would be very surprised if it was with formal pronouns (except probably for the first meeting).

    - - - Updated - - -

I've checked, and in the Dutch subtitles Buffy uses the formal pronoun to address Giles in the first two episodes of the show. Starting from the third episode (The Witch) she uses the informal pronoun.

Wow, I can't believe it's so different to the German versions. I just checked my DVD and in the ending scene of season 7 Lies My Parents Told me when Buffy slams the door into Giles face she uses the formal pronoun (also called polite form, I think). Spike and Giles use the formal pronoun to adress each other even after Lies My Parents Told Me.

    Spoiler:
and Lucifer uses the formal pronoun in season 4 when he asks Chloe out for a date....

I had heard that in Germany people are much more formal than the Dutch when it comes to addressing "authority figures" (such as teachers) but this is really extreme.

Really!? I cannot imagine Spike and Giles addressing each other in a polite way EVER. I'll check my DVDs again but I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that they never do that in Dutch.

I think you need to have a quite word with the translators. This won't do at all.

    TriBel:

    Spoiler:
I haven't gotten to watching season 4 yet. The date scene in season 4 was part of a clip I watched on YouTube in German. I have checked how they adress each other in season 3 and in epiosde 23 right before the kiss they both use the formal pronoun and they do it again the day after in episode 24 when they walk into the the trap. Pierce and Lucifer also adress each other with the formal pronoun which is even weireder because they have not only kissed before, they have literally lived together.

According to the episode transcripts, Something Blue is the first episode where Spike and Giles directly address each other. So I've been watching it with Dutch subtitles, and as I expected, Spike and Giles address each other with informal personal pronouns right from the start.

Actually it's fun to watch the show with Dutch subtitles for a change. Most of the time they capture the character voices pretty well. But there are also some big goofs. For example, "You haven't got the stones" was translated literally!
