What is it you like so much about Shells, Origin? I struggle so much with NFA because the negative reading of the season works for me, but I think they present it as a glorious stance and I really dislike that. I also, as has been discussed extensively elsewhere, struggle with some of Spike's season direction and a good deal of the believability of the fanwanking is stretched to its limits at the end. I would probably have gone for Hell Bound, Destiny, Damage, AHITW and Smile Time. But it has been a while since I watched the season and I might be forgetting something significant in Shells or Origin, they are the two I remember less clearly.

Shells is incredibly exciting. Adrenaline from top to bottom. It's amazing to see Amy Acker transform into Illyria in her first big outing and just stomp on Team Angel and all of their W&H gadgets because she's more powerful than Angel, Spike, Wesley, and their whole office of underlings and mystical toys put together. On top of that suspense, Wesley does double-duty between fighting Illyria and going on his own vengeance spree. On top that suspense, we have the dread suspense of Gunn keeping a secret of Fred's death even as the rest of the gang is working on over-drive to solve that mystery. In the middle of all that adrenaline, the show ends up selling me on the complete strangeness that Illyria would deem Wesley her new Qwa'ha Xahn after he shot Knox and Wesley would accept such a position to guide Illyria after she murdered Fred and stomped on his team- and so his arc goes full circle back to Bizzaro Watcher. It's not an easy sell- but somehow they nailed it. Illyria is the pinnacle of what AI would fight since it killed the most beloved member of their team and it has threat written all over it- but somehow between her incredible power rendering her so invincible that she has to be adopted because she can't be fought and her utter vulnerability that she also lost her world and purpose and she's just as in pain as AI is, she believably joins the team.

For Origin, I love meeting Well Adjusted Connor. He's very endearing to the point of pure fluff especially as this dark season has now become openly dark with Fred's death. However, his quirky dialogue style, his believable ties to the wider human world but boyish, earnest curiosity about Angel's supernatural world, and VK's performance renders him into a full and complex character from the word go. Well Adjusted Connor coming into Angel's world and discovering the supernatural >>>>>>>>>>>> Nina doing same. I think Angel was completely wrong to kill the real Connor and f*ck around with everyone's memories but you know, even though I'm a HUGE critic of it, it's nice to see what all of this pain and moral blackness paid for and some kind of vindication that Connor's born-personality could have turned out so well in the right home.

But then back to the moral blackness- I LOVE Wesley's whole story about recovering his memories. It's logical and ironically twisty at the same time while also packing an incredible emotional punch for all parties concerned. I feel like it's the last entry of Wesley actually fighting for his life instead of being broken....and then, how he fought for his life here does break him in an ironic twist. Wesley breaks a huge, incredibly tricky spell that's actively messing with his head but it's plotted so elegantly that I see how he gets there and even more juicily, how Angel leads him there. Angel is a dick to Wesley about still mourning Fred instead being an eager-beaver detective in this horror shop of an agency. Wesley does try to rally and meets with the Rileys as they ask for help about their surprisingly super-strength son who's been targeted. Without good reason to Wesley, Angel just denies helping them. Then, Angel does an about face and suddenly agrees to help the Reilys but his version of "help" to Wesley is to send a civilian kid who's just encountered the supernatural to go fight a demon of prophecy and power and refuses to entertain any other suggestions or queries on how to avoid sending their client/civilian into battle. So OF COURSE, Wesley wonders WTF? So OF COURSE, Wesley uses the powers and information that Angel handed to him when the gang took over W&H to get all research on Veil. And of course, W&H documents everything so there's clear paperwork establishing that Veil was paid a fortune the day they took over W&H and Angel's signature on a contract. It's completely realistic that Illyria could tell Wesley that Fred's memories changed. Then, in yet another twist of ironies, all of Wesley's detective work brought him to Veil's place where he could shatter the Orlon Window. The very Window that Angel was so concerned about breaking that he'd send his civilian, mind-wiped to innocent son to go fight a demon if it would stop Veil from breaking the Window. Wesley shatters it. But the thing is that over in the next room, Connor gets his memories and he instantly goes from losing his fight against Sahjan to winning it once he remembers his hard-fought skills at fighting that he worked incredibly hard for in Quor-Toth and in S3-4. Wesley, on the other hand, was hoping to restore Fred, for happiness if he broke the Window but all he got back was guilt and more self-loathing.

I agree with your NFA critiques. I also hate how everyone else's arc (save Illyria and actually Harmony as much she annoys me) got flattened to advance Angel's. Gunn's redemption arc and Wesley's uncertain path of possibly reaching some point of mental stability were abruptly cut off at the knees. I also have a hard time buying Lorne agreeing to any of this, including shooting Lindsay. Lindsay is another bizarrely flattened arc. Angel/Spike rescue Lindsay from hell because he's sooooo important even to the point of leaving Gunn to get his heart cut out possibly forever and then, Angel dangles a spot on his team for Lindsay only to have Lorne kill him in the next Lindsay-scene. Again, it's advances Angel's arc OF BEING A DICK. However, it feels so anti-climactic for anyone following Lindsay's story. But it's still a beautiful, exciting episode with so many memorable moments (heh).

I like Smile Time but it's sort of a one-off. There's no movement of any sort - of characters or plot. I would have kept TGIQ as a Spike/Angel fan, and even moreso because of the nuances that Amy Acker brought to the characters she played. But it's never been popular, and I'm okay with that. Smile Time is a nice joke that was created so DB could rest his bum knee. Not a top ten episode for me.
