You keep waiting for the dust to settle and then you realize it; the dust is your life going on. If happy comes along - that weird unbearable delight that's actual happy - I think you have to grab it while you can. You take what you can get, 'cause it's here, and then...gone.

    - Inside Out (It's a fatal flaw that we don't know who "Darla" is and that's she's so repetitive. It bothers me that Connor's first real murder victim is flattened into just Virgin # 1 so that Connor can have a completely fruitless, redundant conversation with some Faux Darla. The Skip parts give crucial information for a first-time watcher, but it's an exposition-dump and not that interesting on rewatch.)

I hear what everybody said about this and while I agree that you can read it differently, I can't. Not with all that babble about the soulless version being able to remember stuff. Plus it's not a unique case, since Buffy went to heaven the writers have been playing with the idea that the soul is much more than a blanco thing that gives somebody certain qualities. The person is the soul. We'll see it again in season 5 when Fred dies. So it's not weird if the writers start moving away from the idea that a soulled being is roughly the same person as the soulless version. But this shift is rather catastrophic for the character Angel and his major arcs. Angel's whole arc is about him not seperating himself from his soulless self. They are one person in his head (usually).

But the soul being connected to the personality doesn't change anything with vampires because they are fundamentally built from the personality of the person they were, their memories, weaknesses and strengths anyway. Even without the soul Angel is fundamentally tied to Liam and has the memories of him, feels like a variation of him in the sense of having continuity. Angel has always been said to remember the victims and as he doesn't keep the initial memory loss once souled, is told it will all come back to him, the memory gaps referred to in S4 are distinct for some reason.

But I am finding it hard to pick what should go here as I really do find something I like in most S4 eps. The character exploration for Connor in Inside Out really struck me when I saw the ep. That he rejects the potential of something he can't touch and feel certain of from Darla to put any moral concerns to one side for Cordelia who is there and offering him constant attention/affection is such an important character point. It doesn't matter if it is Darla or just a higher power representation of her, in some ways that uncertainty plays to why Connor doesn't feel swayed.

Urgh, I'm not sure what I want to go next and there are so many eps to be feeling like this already.

Orpheus is a trip through Angel's subconscious. It's not representational of the actual demon and the actual soul - it's how Angel perceives them, and the defenses he raises against both the demon and the soul. We all push parts of ourselves away. We have a subconscious vision of exactly who we are. Most choices we make are not conscious and rational, they are put forth by our subconscious which collates and relies on our history, etc. Otherwise the simplest decision would require a review of all of our life decisions.

It's called rationalization - knowing what you will do, and then deciding why. I am very aware as a simple human that part of me can get pissed off and think of violence - but Angel without a moral compass actually did the violence. That's why he needs a clear separation of himself as both the demon and the soul. If he let's the two blend, he locks lawyers in wine cellars. Of course his subconscious keeps the two separate to keep Angel sane and functional. This is how his deeper mind makes sense of all the crap that has happened over 250 years.

Bottom line is, even if you see them coming, you're not ready for the big moments...The big moments are gonna come, you can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are.
