I believe it's a reference to this little ditty: Wonders Never Cease

Yes - it was a reference to Wonders Never Cease but I deliberately made it ambiguous because of the whole "Real Vampires Don't Sparkle" meme! Rebcake - it was so evocative I googled the sites you suggested and thought "The Maldives! Renew your passport - quick!". I'd have loved to have seen this on screen (minus the bits they couldn't have shown).

Okay, while we're at it, I love fic that manages to evoke the silliness, the sexiness, and the seriousness of the show. It's a tall order, but if it feels like an episode or a scene, then I'm a happy reader. Usually this includes dialog that pops, or descriptions that, um, sparkle.

    I don't ask for much, do I?

Nope, you're asking for exactly what I want in any story... We're fussy beasties, aren't we?

DeepBlueJoy's post in the Why did Xander limit himself (outside of generally being a Scooby)? reminded me of the fic Sands of Time by James and Wolfing.

DeepBlueJoy discusses that if Xander had someone encouraging him, he would have done better in school.

James and Wolfing had Giles adopt Xander in their fic during S1. Giles as Xander's guardian was pushing Xander hard to do well academically and we see more scenes with Willow tutoring Xander. The scene where Xander gets his first A ever is so overwhelming and heartbreaking, especially the part where he's hurried to the library to show it to Giles. Later, Xander discovers his passion for demonology and finally moves to college in LA after graduation.

I enjoy when a change brings other changes that make sense in fics. Xander is a bit slow in math as he tells Jack in the Zeppo, but he isn't dumb. Xander, Willow, and Buffy are in the same classes a lot of the time and in a normal high school Willow should be in honors classes, so that means he's working extra hard in high level classes.

My favorite part was Xander having lunch with his mother a few weeks before graduation. So many complicated emotions in that scene from her shock about Xander being accepted to a college to her resentment that nobody told her about it, Xander being inwardly sarcastic about her line that he and Aunt Debbie are the first Harrises to go to college to which he thinks he's not the first "Giles" to go to college.

Thank you for mentioning me, SL!!

I do something of this in my story After Midnight... with a life going radically different after he gets involved with an unexpected relationship, he ends up beginning to envision a new direction for his life... I really do believe he could have done a lot with better support. Most of us do. Chaos is the enemy of good school performance. Ask anyone from a home with fighting, or who had to move around a lot... anything that breaks the rhythm of that process can scatter progress to the four winds.

BTW, I'm very fond of Wolfling and especially a certain series about Giles and Ethan... one of the best series on the internet in any fandom, IMO.

I'm not sure I 'love' this pairing, but I've been reading a lot more fics recently, other that Spuffy, and I've really come to like Gunn/Wesley. The fics are usually quite sweet, and even the angsty ones don't become too violent or rapey.

I've only read them as a side pairing to Spander. I can imagine the pairing to be sweet if written during S2 and early S3. Perhaps a S5 fic would be angsty especially after Fred's death. Vengeful Wesley would be scary.

    Cool

One I didn't mention when I was posting to this thread earlier, but really enjoy is well written and characterized Fred/Gunn. I ship them hard, but I see (like Buffy and Spike after Sunnydale) that there would be a need to address what happened with Supersymmetry -- or avoid it somehow -- because I do think it damaged what is otherwise the best and healthiest and most fun relationship in the entire jossverse (second place for Wash and Zoe - had they not ruined that relationship too, it might have beat F/G). I don't think that episode was consistent with the rest of their relationship, btw, but that's a separate argument. Since Supersymmetry is canon, unless you decide it doesn't happen (show why), it has to be dealt with in the narrative of any story.

    In a more general vein:

I'm very fond of well characterized/written characters in any fic. I hate OCs with character names tacked on. I hate when a characterization consists primarily of some verbal tics -- usually repeated, even if the character only used them once or a couple of times in very specific situations that don't apply to the fanfic in question. So what I love is great writing! I love when the writer creates new 'Buffyisms, Spikeisms, Xanderisms etc., that never appeared in canon, but sound utterly natural.

I like when (especially unconventional) pairings (slash or het) are properly hashed out so we see why they work, beyond 'boy/girl pretty', let's get them into bed. I think nearly any pairing* can work for me if the writer does his/her work to build the background for how the characters make the choices they do, and how the two people flow together well.

I like to see Giles in relationships, and see how it changes him. I especially enjoy seeing him with Ethan -- probably b/c my template for a great slash fic is Of Old Mystics by Wolfling & omphalos.

I don't enjoy seeing Giles with the original Scooby gang, but i don't include either Faith or the later slayers in that number. Later in the series, Giles seemed to devolve into a WC drone. I like to see him with people who challenge that.

I love to see fic writers develop characters of color, especially Rona and Kendra, and I like fics that feature Gunn as well, not just as a background character, which seems to be what happens mostly in fics. I have major issues with Wood because of Spike, but I do sympathize with the kid who lost his mother. His saving graces for me are his commitment to the fight and his humor -- when he isn't Hellmouthed. I love a more rainbow buffyverse than existed in the original series.

Sex scenes aren't a major requirement for me in a fic, but I'm very fond of sex that drives the story forward, that reveals something of the characters and who and where they are mentally and emotionally... and sex scenes with humor and laughter.

Real is much more interesting than graphic porno.

I don't really care how much bigger someone's equipment gets when they vamp out! Jeez. That said, I'm not squeamish or shy and I don't mind explicit sex... as long as it is about more than mechanics. Much more interesting is what the characters are feeling... sensation, fear, passion, hesitation, eagerness... whatever it is... it interests me more than what goes where... unless what goes where is in some measure indicative of something greater than interlocking/inserting of fleshy bits.

Whatever mechanics are included need to be correct for the sexual pairing you are writing - age, ability, gender, character, experience level. If you don't know what people do when two women or two men (or even, sadly, a man and woman) have sex, don't try to write it in detail without finding out! Most every couple will enjoy a passionate kiss... no need to discuss exactly who is doing what below the waist, if you don't know. Do not guess! It's very annoying when people write ridiculous things!

I've read more than once about a man driving himself through a woman's cervix and ejaculating directly into her womb. Anyone who's ever had anything breach the cervix knows that it is a fairly unpleasant to very painful exercise... and that penetrative sex generally involves the vaginal vault and external genitalia, not the womb.

I love it when people get details right.
I don't need lots of detail of ANYTHING, but done right, small real world details can anchor a story in realism -- something that is very important when one is writing fantasy. High art, high science - not necessary... but, if you decide to include art, science, technology, history, medicine -- and of course CANON -- please get it right! Keep it reasonably simple and do NOT let it take your story over.

One reason I tend not to read 'hard' science fiction is that I read fiction for the fiction, not just the science. I have medical journals and science blogs for that! I want it to be thought out well (star trek did a great job with this) and for any retcons** to make sense and for continuity to be consistent with canon OR a reason for divergence given that makes some kind of sense. Put your 'plausible' in please!

    Blue

I love when Angelus is living up to his name in fanfiction. Meaning he gets far more cruel than he was in canon. I have read a fic in Xander Xtreme that scarred me for life, but it stayed in my mind all these years because that Angelus was the cruelest being that ever walked the planet.

I still wish that it was Angelus who took away Xander's eye in S2.

I love bittersweet endings. An happy ending won't make me dislike the fic but I respond a lot more to fics that don't leave me completely satisfied.

I also really appreciate the use of minor characters (like Anne, Jonathan, Larry). It grounds the story and makes it resemble the show a bit more.

No. It's just a wish of mine that I have been wishing for years and still wishing to this day. Angelus was incredibly cruel to Giles, which was great. I wish he was as cruel to Xander and Willow.

I really enjoy fics that include the Desota. Buffy, Spike on the road in a car with blacked out windows , with or without the scoobies , willingly or forced together by chance is usually all kinds of fun. I think it might be because they're usually set between S4 and S5 and are written with quite a bit of humour.

I agree with you, but only when it's the two of them. I like the time travel stories for the same reasons. It gets the two of them away from the scoobies and out of Sunnydale. They've only got themselves to rely on and no one to tell them that relying on each other is wrong.
