Default Suggestions for the FanFiction discussion threads

This is the thread, where we decide, which story we are going to discuss next in the FanFiction discussion forum.

If you want to suggest a story, please be so kind as to give us the title, the name of the writer, a link to the fic, the word count or number of chapters and a short summary.

We have already picked our next two stories. They are
Journeys: A Promise To A Lady by Mary and Journeys Part Two: Awakenings by Mary
We have yet to decide on the dates for the discussions of Journeys.

I already have a suggestion for June (?). This story was originally suggested by bespangled in another thread. It is A Long Day`s Journey by anaross.

Summary: Spike's return, seen through the eyes of Angel and his friends. Oh. And he's not allowed to see Buffy. Post Chosen.

181k words and you can find it here:

    http://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=4107

This is just a suggestion. If you have other fics, you would like to read, please go ahead and we will decide together, which one to pick.

Seeing Spike's return through the eyes of people that don't know him well/at all seems like a really odd idea to me, not convinced by that one.

Is your other suggestion for June still a guarded secret flow?

    Gort's Dreamer

Something by Holly? (The Other Side of Midnight?) She's one of the first Spuffy fic authors I read. Along with Nautibitz and Damperandspoons.

I like anaross and Holly's styles, so am happy to read anything of theirs.

Gort's Dreamer is one of my favourites and I would be happy to read it again.

    I'm so easy to please

I'd be surprised if there were any Holly, Nautibitz or dampersandspoons stories I hadn't read, but I'd probably happily revisit most of them. They were some of the first stories I read too and it is proving interesting to reread having read so many more stories since and see what I think of them now. Spikeskat was another author I read a great deal of and greyangel. Lots of potential for revisits in those stories I think. I've also read Dreamer already.

I can always pull something more random from my to read lists. The only problem with those or some of the older writers is that it might be a bit difficult to find them all online still. I get the impression quite a few of you keep an eye on newly completed ones on EF, so anything due to come up there that looks promising could be flagged.

Regarding new fan fics in the past year, how about the unusual Wooded Path by Linnae13?

I found it to be pretty original in many ways although it's a complete alternate universe with Buffy and Spike in a different time and even with different powers. She's still a human and he's still a vampire, though. Her Sparks in the Water is another recent charming All Human fic.

It'd be nice if we could get some of the current authors to come on here for a question and answer session of some sort.

I think, what we see through their eyes, is, how they get to know him. The story also seems to have the scoobies POV`s.

Is your other suggestion for June still a guarded secret flow?
It was Demons I Have Known by Gwennie. A Post-Chosen fic that has a word count of about 73k words. It has recently been completed and was highly praised on Elysian Fields.

Two weeks after the Sunnydale implosion, a spell goes wonky and the Scoobies become privy to every dirty, sweet, tragic, nitty-gritty detail of Buffy and Spike's history. Secrets are revealed, prejudices are challenged, Xanders are chagrinned, Gileses are contrite, missing scenes are wedged into canon.

    http://dark-solace.org/elysian/views...t=ok&warning=5

But we have so many other suggestions at the moment, that I would be happy, to postpone that one.

I have read Dreamer and would be happy, to read it again. I would also be happy, to read The Other Side Of Midnight by holly or Wooded Path by Linnae13. I don`t know either of them.

Stoney, I would also be very interested in reading older fics, especially those, that are not on Elysian Fields.

I've read a couple of Linnae's stories, Sparks in the Water and Be Fearless, My Dear. I'd be up for giving Wooded Path a go if that was up at some point sure.

It'd be nice if we could get some of the current authors to come on here for a question and answer session of some sort.
I suppose if it was a current author they could be invited to come and join when a date is set for a fic.

Hmmm, I don't know, I think it would greatly depend for me on what else I had on when that one came up.

It was Demons I Have Known by Gwennie. A Post-Chosen fic that has a word count of about 73k words. It has recently been completed and was highly praised on Elysian Fields.

That's an odd premise, total privacy invasion for the author to be able to write how the different character should view the relationship differently I suppose. Not sure again but I'd give it a go.

But we have so many other suggestions at the moment, that I would be happy, to postpone that one.
It might be worth running a developing list that can keep getting updated on the first post or amended/reposted at varying points in the thread to keep track of suggestions. I don't think I'd read Dreamer again myself but I'd probably find time to revisit any Holly fics, I'd intended to reread all these soon.

I don't think we should rule out fics not everyone wants to read though, I hasten to add. Sometimes we won't be able to join due to other obligations etc so unless someone specifically asks us to wait to read a story they want to join in with but can't in the suggested timeframe, if there is some interest story suggestions should still be kept on the table.

Stoney, I would also be very interested in reading older fics, especially those, that are not on Elysian Fields.
I'm not sure which older author's are harder to find. Obviously I've found Lizerrrbeathan is one of them, ha. If anyone is aware of someone they have heard of that they can't find I might have more obscure links. I just had a quick look and spikeskat that I mentioned above doesn't seem to be on EF. I thought sabershadowkat might have been an alternate name, like they sometimes used sabershadowkitten, but the story I looked for wasn't included so I don't think it is. So possibly a spikeskat fic? They vary greatly in the lengths and how plot-y or porn-y they are. It might be helpful to gauge if people want to try a variety or if most want to avoid things like vamp Buffy, all human etc. I tend to have read most things.

    - - - Updated - - -

sabershadowkat could be one to consider too of course. They are on EF and a very prolific Spuffy writer (around 150 fics on EF!!). Again vast variety in terms of the plot/porn balance and different fic types. It's tough when suggesting authors because they obviously have plenty of fics to choose from and it's hard to know what to suggest when you're read many different ones. A handful could perhaps be suggested for some of the well known authors and then general consensus on one or two selected. Guidance on what to avoid would probably still help though.

How about Etched in Stone by Flowerofthewolf? I've not read it, but it's in the Top Favourite stories on EF, and was completed last year. It's relatively new and popular, so it might be worth adding to the list?

Summary: A response to the challenge by Tempestt. After killing his second Slayer, Spike heads to Sunnydale with Dru for what he believes to be some well deserved rest. But Dru seems to have other plans, and his rest becomes a bit more permanent than he originally thought... The first chapter is pre-series, the rest will be held in a season 2 setting of Sunnydale.

I hard noped out of this fic and won't go back, right at the start, too, because Dawn was there. If it'd just been the scoobies (Giles, Xander, and Willow) I might have kept going because I guess if that's how tha author wants to punish them, whatever, but DAWN being there made me want to barf and I just hit the back button as hard as I could. But as Stoney said, just because one person won't join in on a fic for any and all reasons doesn't mean everone else shouldn't read it and discuss it.

I'd be down for that! There one I really like (Sex, lies, and sonograms?) That's like this time capsule. It would have been written during S3--I think?--maybe a little later, but there's no Tara, Spike's background isn't known, it's really interesting to see how things were being parsed out at the time.

We still have to set the dates for A promise to A Lady and Awakenings. As the first one is rather short and the fics are Part I and Part II of the same series, I`d suggest, that we give us one week for A promise To A Lady and two weeks for Awakenings. The discussion für Adieu, a Dew, I Do will start on 20th April and we should plan two weeks of discussion for that story. Then we could start discussing A Promise To A Lady on 4th of May and Awakenings on 11th of May.

If no one objects, I would announce those two stories in the next few days, to give everybody enough time for reading it beforehand.

As for the next fics, most of us seem to favor reading The Other Side Of Midnight by Holly, Wooded Path by Linnea13 and Etched in Stone by Flowerofthewolf. I am going to put them on the list of picked fics in the next few days. We won`t be getting to start discussing them before the end of May, though.

There has been a suggestion in another thread, to discuss shorter stories as well. I think, this is a great idea. I love one-shots and believe, that they often catch the atmosphere of the show and the voicing of the characters better, than epic stories. What do you think about setting up a week for short stories (up to 7k words? ) and read and discuss one story every day ? Or we could plan for two weeks and discuss a short story every second day. We would need seven short stories for that.

I thought it was a bit urk in the first place to be honest, having Dawn there too is off putting for me too.

Me too! Or any of her stories, really. Obviously I like and and all genres of fics, from canon adjacent, to AH, to vamp!Buffy. Slayer!Spike, etc. etc. It's all more time with characters I love.
Yeah, I read all types too but I know some really don't like vamped Buffy or all human. But if there are enough that will read them it will give a bit more variety and it's interesting to see major changes or how someone uses the characterisations outside of the verse too.

I'd be down for that! There one I really like (Sex, lies, and sonograms?) That's like this time capsule. Yes some of the older fics often are giving non-canon backgrounds etc because they weren't known at that point and its interesting for that too. I've read tons of this authors and would be up for rereading most of them.

Thanks for keeping on top of all this for us flow, I've noted 4th May for Promise and 11th May for Awakenings.

I'll definitely try to join for The Other Side of Midnight and Wooded Path but I've read Etched in Stone and wouldn't read that one again personally.

I'm not sure what the best plan is with the short stories, but I suppose if we have clear dates for them all there's no reason why we can't do what you suggest. I think every other day would probably be best for that. Are we making suggestions for these closer to the time?

We can take in suggestions for shorter stories from now on. I will make a separate list in the first post.

So far I have only put those fics on the list of fics to be read and discussed in future, that we have all agreed on, or at least no one has disagreed on. So far, we have plenty of suggestions. If we should ever run out of more suggestions, we can always go back to those, we haven`t all agreed on.

Of course new suggestions are also welcome at any time !

TriBel: You don`t need an outlook reminder ;-) I will always create a new thread with the story-title and the date we have set for the discussion. The threads will be created soon enough for everybody to read or re-read the fic, before the discussion starts.

Did we say 7k was the limit for a short?

No, I just threw that in as a suggestion. It could be more or less. But we should have some limit, I think.

Well as someone who rarely actively sought short stories I would often rule out anything under 10k so I think that as an absolute upper limit would make sense personally (and still be easily readable within 48hrs, if we go by that). But it is a little arbitrary, and 7k as a limit would just emphasise the style of a shorter story more.

    Hey y`all,

does anyone have suggestions for short Spuffy FanFiction stories for our discussion group? The plan is, that we will be discussing one short fic per day (or per two days) for a week (or for two weeks).

I have a couple of one-shots to suggest:

In such a night by Dactylgirl, set in season 10, word count 1.911

    http://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=4049

Journaling by Gort, set Post-Chosen, word count 5,323

    http://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=4571

One Night in London by stephwin, set Post-NFA, word count 5,925

    http://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=5589

A Brief History of Now by Gwyneth Rhys, set season 7, word count 6,463

    http://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=908

Promises, Promises by Sigyn, set season 6 word count 7,056

    http://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=5610

Dawntasia by WillowFromBuffy set season 6 word count 7074

I'd like to nominate Reflections by MsClawdia. It's 14,000 words in 9 chapters, so pretty short. Post-NFA, Buffy is living in Cleveland and a bit blue, when various incarnations of Spike start suddenly popping up all over her house. It's a reflection upon fanfic itself, while still being a serious look at Spike and Buffy.
