Which fics would you recommend by Dutchbuffy? I'd like to read more of her stuff, but not sure where to start

All of them, really, but some may be better to start with than others... If you're still in the Christmas mood, then Merry Christmas Spike would be a nice place to start. I think these were among the first Dutchbuffy stories I read, and they made me want more.

Since you like season 7, Scenes from Season 7 could also be a good option.

If you like time travel, Actions Past is a nice one (it's long!).

Maybe White Picket Fences, though Buffy and Spike are not entirely themselves through most of it.

It's probably better NOT to start with Take Heart or the Crossing Verse. At least not part 2 of the latter; part 1 is OK (also long). These are definitely NOT sweet and romantic in any way!

I just discovered something, that bothers me a bit: I really really like Spuffy fanfics with a f*** or die -trope. Here is one:

Wow, the fact that I totally have overlooked this thread just makes me realize how crazy my life has been lately.
The time I can invest in fanficts is limited nowadays, alas, but I usually read something before sleeping, and nothing like a nice spuffy fanfict to take my mind away from troubles and help me sleep. So, I guess I'll be coming back here often enough.

This said, I'm sure I've read hundreds of spuffy fanfics, but right now I don't remember the names of the ones I would recommend. I'll try to look for them now and then, and post them here for you.

There is a rule against recommending WIPs? If there isn't, I would recommend my latest favorite 'The Darkling', by OffYourBird. You may find it easily in EF, since it has been updated regularly for over a year. A 100,000+ words time travel fic (time-travel fics are my guilty pleasure), but not one of the usual kind. It is not finished yet, but it has come to a point where if the story wasn't finished, I would have enjoyed it anyway. Also, OYB is not one to leave stories unfinished , so I'm pretty sure this one will be finished too.

Warnings: Unsouled Spike in all his punk glory and older, life-roughened Buffy (this would sound like a lure more than a warning to me... ), rough and explicit sex, use of substances and violence (of more than one kind).

Why I like it: Original plot, great character development, awesome original characters.

If you like them a bit dark and a little harsh at times, angsty but 'oh-how-awesome', this is a fic for you

The darkling is sitting on my bookshelf and I can't wait to read it. I'm kind of a linear person so I always wait until they are complete.

Just gave a look at it. It calls to my attention that it is centered on two fanfictions only, which would be too few to make any general conclusions about spuffy fanficts IMHO. Haven't read it all, though, maybe I'll give it a try. In any case, I do appreciate her take on how fanfiction should be considered literature, and I agree with her in that some stories are excellent works, much better than other published books I've read.

About the stories she is using for her analysis, 'West of the Moon, East of the Sun' is an epic one if there is any. I haven't read the other one.

    Hey Rihannon,

glad you found this thread and looking forward to your recs! There are no rules and we will happily recieve recommendations for WIP`s although I tend - like GoSpuffy - to wait until they are finished, because it takes me out of the flow of a story if I have to wait for the next chapter. The Darkling sits on my book shelf as well and I am very excited to read it, once it is finished. It was one of the very few fics, I started reading as a WIP, but when I realized it was going to be a much longer story than I first expected it to be, I dropped out and decided to wait until it is finished.

Have you noticed the fanfic discussion group on the subforum?

    http://www.buffyforums.net/forums/fo...ion-Discussion

If you find the time, I`d be happy to see you there too!

Pricey, I know you love "Buffy takes care of injured Spike"-fics. Have you read this one? It also has Cangel!

Thank you Flow, I'll give it a look!

So, here are some of the finished stories I have present in my mind, maybe are the ones I always go back to... I may add some others when I remember, and some of them may have been recommended already.

(All the following can be found at Elysian Fields, please read the warnings provided by the authors)

A touch of her style, by myrabeth: a divergence of Spike's encounters with Nikki Wood, and how it changed things for them, Robin and Buffy.

Dreamer by Gort:This one was such a thrill, if I remember right (I read it a while ago).

My life closed twice, by anarross: Spike and poetry... this one blew my mind.

Si Primo Venit by KittenOfDoomage: Anonther one where Spike's past was different, he has changed but remains himself (because he is Spike, duh). Made me shed a few tears, more than once.

Fin Amour, by Angearia: Can't even start to describe this one, but prepare to cry.

Someday, by Sunalso and Welcome to the Hellmouth! Part Deux by OffYourBird: Same premise, two great stories! (Time travel, of course).

    Stories by Holly:
I separated these here, because I must say that I have issues with two things that are present in many of her stories: the "claim" thing (mostly because it is not BTVS canon) and when they get too porn-heavy. Although, I tend to overlook said issues in favor of a well written story. And Holly's writing is more than good, it is beautiful.

A love Like Ours, for example, gets me every time. This paragraph stayed with me for years:

The words arose behind her eyes. He saw her grasp them. Wrestle them down. Saw her fight to spit them out—the same old song and dance. The road much traveled. She knew every turn. Every twist. Every crack. Every tiny imperfection. Every stop. Every bloody talking point. Buffy was a master of this road. The hand she dealt vaguely resembled a Bible-thumper who refused to see the value in science or reason. Buffy and her jihad against the love of a soulless man.
    .

I've read this story too many times (usually I stop when they finally get it on, because, well, reading it once is enough to know what happens), but how they get there is what gives me goosebumps every time.

Other stories by Holly I have enjoyed are:
Echoes (this is a very well known one), It Came Upon The Midnight Clear (one of my favorite versions of 'A Christmas Carol'), Tempesta di Amore ('Rebbeca' a la Buffy), and The Writing on the Wall (this is a painful one, but at the time got me crazy about it).

Other stories I enjoyed a lot, but don't think I've read more than once:

A Different Kind of Hell by OffYourBird: Time travel... don't know what else I can say without giving away the plot.

The "Bitty Buffy and Mr. Gordo" series, by HCB: Incredibly cute and funny.

That's all for the moment, I hope you enjoy!

The Ewer of Enheduanna was written specifically with this trope in mind. There was a great discussion around how to avoid the very squicky non-con factor until Barb suggested making it Buffy’s idea! Mooney also hated Spike’s penchant for using sexist insults. You’ll never find “poof” in her stories...lol!

I second kamw30's rec of The Ewer of Enheduanna.* It was written for Seasonal Spuffy, so I would suggest reading it there:

    https://seasonal-spuffy.livejournal.com/520583.html

Added bonus: readable for all without account or login needed.

*And basically all of the_moonmoth's fic.

Awww - thanks so much. I am going to have a lovely morning reading this

    Rihannon:

A touch of her style, by myrabeth: a divergence of Spike's encounters with Nikki Wood, and how it changed things for them, Robin and Buffy.
I second that. It`s well written. The plot is very unusal, because we see Spike in and Robin as friends, but it`s a great read.

Dreamer by Gort:This one was such a thrill, if I remember right (I read it a while ago).
I especially loved the second part, when were thrown together and had to rely on each other.

My life closed twice, by anarross: Spike and poetry... this one blew my mind.
Yeah, this one is in a league of it`s own.

They look really intriguing. I have put them both on my Bookshelf and will suggest them for the discussion group. I can`t believe that after all this time I`ve been reading Spuffy fanfiction, there are still so many great fic to be found.

The "Bitty Buffy and Mr. Gordo" series, by HCB: Incredibly cute and funny.
I`ve added this one too. It`s soooo difficult to write really funny stories, but I`ve read one b HCB before (Apple Pie) and it was really good.

For the first time in weeks, I found some time to read fanfiction and I really enjoyed:

    The Sharing Game by stuffandnonsense:

    https://dark-solace.org/elysian/viewstory.php?sid=4086

The story starts several years (no exact timeline has been given) post NFA. The comic canon does not exist. Buffy and Spike have become friends. One day they start talking about things past, about relationships, about what they want and expect out of life ... it is all centered around a questionnaire, but the focus of this story is on the surprisingly deep and insightful talks between Buffy and Spike. I highly recommend it. There are also two Sequels.

Yes, I enjoyed the Sharing Game too. I've also been reading Ripples on a Hellmouth, the other story stuffandnonsense posted to the most recent round of Seasonal Spuffy. It's good! It's a WIP (which I don't usually read) but it's almost finished.
