Okay - Dorian started for Spuffy - I suppose I will start for Spike!!! *gulp*
So - why DO we love Spike??? Have you always been a fan? Is it because he's always "been bad"? Or is it really the glimpses of William that we see here and there that you like most of all?? Did you like him Souless? Chipped? Ensouled? Or do you like him "fangs and all"?!?
What is your favorite Spike Episode? Who was your favorite Spike Love-interest? Drusilla? Harmony? Buffy?
I loved Spike the first episode he was on Buffy! I was starting to get a liitle "ho-hum" about Buffy and Spike came along! I've always had a "thing" for Bad Boys. They are usually more complex than the Good Guy. The whole reason they "fall" to the darker side of their character is usually what attracts me most. I can relate to someone who can be seduced by the world but who also can overcome!
When we are introduced to William - I just LOVED him!! My heart went out to him!! How many times have we been in love only to have it thrown in our faces! (And you can always tell the type of man a man is by the way he treats his Mother!!! :D)
I LOVE it when Spike gives the Scoobies a hard time!! And I LOVE it when the Scoobies give him one back!
I love that he loves LOVE! Being a poet is a perfect past time for him. I wish they had explored more of that when he was a Vampire.
I must admit that I am probably more of a Spike Lover than a Spuffy Lover. But because Spike loves Buffy, then I love Spuffy.
But I thought the Sparmony relationship had a lot of sexy moments! There seemed to be some on-camara chemistry between Mercedes and James! I just wish Harmony hadn't been SO ditzy! Loved the scene when he "panther crawls" up to her and tells her to "bite your tongue" and she responds "Bite it for me"!
My favorite Spike episode is Fool for Love. I can watch that episode over and over. There are so many great lines! And it is the first time we really get to see Willaim/Spike. AND it's the first time we see Spike physically showing Buffy some kindness - when he goes to blow her away but ends up comforting her in the end.
Spike is fun! He's cool! He's SEXY and he can be so sweet! There's not a moment in Buffy or Angel history that I just haven't loved him!
And we can share our James Marsters love here also! I think he is such a great actor/singer! I've enjoyed his performances in everything!!

Oh the wonder that is Spike, Why do I love thee, shall I count the ways?
I shall endeavor to point out actual character traits that attract me to Spike and not wallow in the prettiness and head tilting. (Although they are lovely bits to wallow about.)
I love all things Spike. I liked big bad Spike with his his crazy goth lover. I loved trying to be good and not sure how Spike. I adore ensouled self-sacrificing and Angel teasing Spike.
I think that the very best Spike trait is his perseverance and determination to enjoy life whatever the circumstances. Spike evolves with the times, goes with the flow, and seems to have so much fun doing it.

Oh I LOVE that Kitten! That describes Spike perfectly! He does seem to enjoy life no matter what! And yes - some of that means he enjoys being a Vampire! But over the seasons of Buffy as the circumstances in his life changed - he either adapted or he met the challenge by being all he could be!
When he became chipped - he realized he could still beat Demons and help Buffy fight against evil. And as we read in that great critique, when he realized he could attack Buffy - he went beyond to prove that he had changed there as well. Even rising to the challenge of the Demon Trials to win his soul back for love.
He is a "Vampire for all times"!
Superstition.

Does anyone think that James is great because he accepts that he will pretty much be known for the rest of his life as 'Spike'?
I heard that he loves it, and he is fine with it.
As some other actresses/actors like Sarah Michelle said to a fan once who was calling out 'Buffy, Buffy!', 'My name's not Buffy, it's Sarah'.
I think it's great that James accepts that.

Maybe I'm old school, but at first meeting, they'd be "Mr. Marsters" or "Ms. Gellar".

No dude - you are being polite and respectful - nothing old school about that!
But yes, I imagine it would be hard to be known for one character you portrayed for the rest of your life. Actually, bittersweet would be an apt description. Happy that you crafted a character to the point that the lines obscure between reality and art and frustrating because others cannot see beyond that persona and find other characters within you as well.
I watched an interview with the man who played "Pugsly Adams" from the Adam's Family this week. He talked about how that character ruined his life!
And there was a movie out this past year "Hollywoodland" about the man who originally protrayed Superman in the series. It was very hard for him to find work afterwards because people could not see beyond the Superman character. He supposedly committed suicide.
It takes a special type of personality and character trait for someone to accept and be happy about a role that "overshadows" a great deal of their acting career. James seems to have embraced the fact that he created a character so many people loved from one that everyone was supposed to hate.
I am SO hoping to meet him in Atlanta!!

I agree that it must be tough. As an actor you want the opportunity to play many roles and being known for one in particular can make it challenging to get different parts. That being said though, it should be a compliment to have helped shape a character that lives so fully in your audience's imagination.
In 1979 Leonard Nimoy disappointed many fans with the release of a book entitled I am Not Spock, he followed that up with a 1996 book I am Spock. Maybe time helps.

Many of us seem to picture Spike as a Poet because William was one before he became a Vampire. It seems to be a common feeling among Spike-lovers that he would just continue his poetry once becoming Spike. However, we really only have one time in which he quoted poetry of his own as Spike - and it was his poetry slam in Angel - Not Fade Away.
I have enclosed that clip to get you familiar again.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=aRf221fSfkA
Do you think Spike would have continued his poetry? Would you like to see that in some future aspect? Why do we see the Poet so clearly having never really seen him much at all?? Who would be the better Poet - William or Spike?

Just wanted to drop this by - so sorry it's short notice! I was OOT and noticed it on the TV Schedule when I got home!!
So set your VCR/DVR's for James Marsters appearing in "Cool Money". It's on USA at Monday, June 18th, at 2am EST. I've heard it's - meh - but James's performance is worth seeing. It was a made for TV movie
shortly after Angel ended.
ALSO!!!
There's a rumor that Angel Season 6 is coming!!!! Here's a wonderful link to a conversation with Brian Lynch. He talks about Season 6 being CANON with Joss's Blessings! And he talks about SPIKE!!!

I'm catching up...
Here's the June Q&A with James Marsters!! Love the question about what songs or album has an ex-GF ruined for him!!

And the housework question... Hmmm... Reminds me of a certain fanfiction I am currently reading about a Sexy Vampire!! **coughDKcough** :D
Who would be the better Poet - William or Spike?
Well... I think Spike would be better poet than William.
We usually begin writing poetry when we're young, to express our feelings and emotions, our inner self. Teenagers are especially self-absorbed in that way, but some grown-ups are too. That's natural of course, but the thing is that when you are writing about how you feel, you are pretty much the only one who will enjoy your poem :) In order to become the author whose poetry touches other people, you've got to learn other people's feelings, and basically you need to know life.
Now, I think William's attitude was very teenager-like; he himself said (when Ceclily asked him if it was about her) that his poetry was "about how he feels". He obviously was very naive and self-absorbed. Then, after his turning, he left his mother's house, he traveled a lot, he faught, he loved, he killed, and basically been through a lot. I believe that experience should have affected his poetry and made it maybe not less self-centered, but at least more interesting :) Also, it seems to me that getting his soul back should have made him further evolve as a poet, since soul is the metaphor of conscience and maturity on the show and those are (IMO) the qualities of true poet.
As for
Why do we see the Poet so clearly having never really seen him much at all??
I believe that's because he is so open, never afraid to express his feelings and emotions, to follow his heart. That, and his incurable romanticism :)
ETA: Almost forgot! Can I be added to the members list, please? :)

Welcome Zugma!!
What a great post about Spike/William and the Poet within!!
You are right about how so often our art is better shaped by the experiences in our lives. William's poetry reflects his current experiences about love - which at that time involves his Mum and Cecily. However, Spike having seen and participated more in life (in death) would be able to reflect more of the passion of death, life, beauty, and pain in his works.
Spike does seem to be more in touch with the way things and people make him feel. I think this would put him in the category of a "Feeler" rather than "Thinker". His statements would probably start out with "I feel..." rather than "I think..." Not to imply he doesn't think or lacks intelligence. Feelers seem to express themselves based on the way something makes them "feel" emotionally. It is a decision rationale based on emotions rather than always facts.
Thanks for the warm welcome, ThePoet's<3 :)

Yes, this is exactly what I meant, only you worded it much better than I did! :)

I agree. (Though I would go further with your comparison and say that he is also much more of a "doer" rather than "thinker" :))
Also, this makes me think of another thing I love about him: isn't it fascinating how he never tires of being a "feeler", so connected with the world around him? He never grows cold or indifferent despite the pain it causes him sometimes; even when depressed, he is still full of emotions. If I remember correctly, he tried to deny/magically erase his feelings only once (his love to Buffy, in Entropy). I find it significant that to quit loving, he needed supernatural means: it seems that doing so literally meant going against his nature.
James is soon going to be a guest star in a show that is pretty popular on this forum. From James' newsletter -
He will be appearing as a guest star alongside leading actor John Barrowman in the BBC's adult spin-off of long-running television series Doctor Who.
Torchwood - an anagram of Doctor Who - is a secret task force that deals with alien encounters. John Barrowman plays mysterious multi-sexual time agent Captain Jack Harkness, who leads the Cardiff-based team. Series creator Russell T Davies, winner of the 2006 BAFTA Dennis Potter Award for Outstanding Writing for Television, has also written Casanova, Dr Who and Queer As Folk.
The episode will be broadcast in the UK by the BBC early next year.
I've been meaning to watch this show for a long time now. Now I have another reason.

OH WOW!! Thanks Ameer!! I haven't watched Dr. Who yet - I'm not sure my Cable Co. carries it. You have to have sattlelite if you want BBC America :(
However - that makes a lot of sense as to why James is doing a concert in Cardiff sometime in July!! I wondered what he was going to be doing there!!
Just to add to our "James Marster's viewing Pleasure list"
He will be guest starring in "Saving Grace" a new series starting July 18th on TNT starring Holly Hunter. I'm not sure which episode he will be in but I imagine either first or second one. He's playing a Texas oil man - oh I am dying to see that!!! :D
Zugma - YES!! It is probably the part of Spike I love the most because I can identify with it the most. I am often lead by the way I feel about something vs. "getting all the facts". There have been many times when people tell me about ideas that I will get a "feeling" and say no - only to be so glad that I didn't say yes later!! My feelings were right!!
Funny thing about Spike getting rid of his feelings... I read a wonderful critique not long about how in Dead Things Spike said to Buffy, "Don't you think I've tried NOT to love you?" And how this seemed to be the "undoing" of her in that scene. That's more or less when she lit into him and tranferred all the hatred for herself onto him. Because if this vampire who had declared his love countless times to her is now telling her that he has tried NOT to love her then she really must be beyond hope.
But he does allow himself to feel the full range of his emotions. And because you know this about the character you know the intensity of his feelings when he shows them.
Great Stuff!!

I hope I'll be able to get my hands on the DVD of this movie soon since that's the only way I'm gonna be able to watch it. Anyone here planning on going to this?
I loved every aspect of Spike, from Badboy!Spike to Chipsahoy!Spike to Soulful!Spike...every charcter development just took me deeper into the love for Spike's character.
My favorite Spike centric episode would have to be Crush. My heart just bleeds for him in this episode. He's at a crossroads. He cannot be a vampire, but he can't be a man, either, and I think this is the first time that we really see this from Spikes POV. He's fallen in love with Buffy, but he doesn't want to be, he tells her how he feels, and her rebuff he can't handle because he doesn't know how. So he does the only thing he can in his limited vampire mind...he ties her up until she likes him...LOL. What? it seemed to always work with Dru...and it's what he knew. The sad, puppy dog look on his face at the end of the episode when he realized that Buffy un-invited him from her home broke my heart. The first time watching this episode was what caused me to become a major Spuffy shipper...I just wanted that puppy dog look to go away.

Welcome LRae!! Glad to have another Spike Lover to obscess with!!! Great Post!
I feel the same way about Crush. It is a turning point in Spike's "LOVE-life". This woman he has always thought of as his destiny - the sire of his vampire life - represents everything he has known since his turning. It was a big decision in Spike's life. He made a conscious decision to turn away from that part of his un-life because he loved Buffy. (i'm not saying he wasn't still a vampire!!) Even after she rejected his declaration of love. It was a difficult time for him. He could not be a "proper" vampire - he had to depend on Drusilla to kill for him - yet he still wasn't all that Buffy wanted from him. It was a sad episode to see him so lost at that point but it also showed at what heighths, depths, and lengths he would go to show Buffy how much he loved her - in his way.
He is such a great Vampire!!
I have to make this announcement over here on Buffy Forum too!!!

Ok this is seriously a bit painful-definitely the closest he's come to me (in Washington DC) and I will be heading north that weekend instead of south. Stupid, darn wedding.:p
Has anyone else noticed that if you click on the link to purchase a cd from his site there doesn't actually seem to be any for sale? Also why doesn't anyone re-release some GOTR ?
And while I'm at it how is it that James Marsters doesn't have his own show yet? I mean talented, gorgeous, decent resume, massive and very loyal following that would probably gladly watch him read the dictionary as long he he threw in a head tilt now and again. What are the tv folks looking for? Arghhh.:confused2:

I actually like that show, but I spend the commercials pouting about the utter lack of decent cheek bones and naughtiness on tv these days.
And the accent...I've heard it's pretty convoluted, that is not so much with the accurate, and I am absolutely ok with that.

DK!! Wedding Schmedding!! You must see James!! :D (this isnt YOUR wedding is it?!?) I know - I always seem to be ahead of my favorites!! I was in Secaucus NJ in December - he shows up in May! :D
If he wasn't coming this close - 4 hours - I wouldn't go see him. But with this I can make it into a long fun weekend.
I agree with the James for TV campaign! I know he has turned some things down because of family obligations - Dresden Files was offered to him first but he would have had to move to Canada. He didn't want to be away from his son. I think that is so sweet! Gotta love a man with a since of responsibility! (so rare these days!)
He does seem to be getting some guest appearances though... I think we should campaign for him to be on Grey's Anatomy as a new Dr. We need to replace Burke - James would make a great Dr.!! Or any of the Sci-Fi shows!!
I've been hearing all kinds of Torchwood *rumors* regarding James's guest appearance!!! I've heard he's going to be playing a "familiar role" in the episode!!! I've also heard that because Joss talked to James one time about a Spike movie and was never able to fulfill that idea, this may be his appeasement to the Spike fans!! And Joss may write the episode!!
Now these are all rumors - but wouldn't it be great if they were true?!? :2party:
What are some other shows you would like to see him either as a regular role or at least a guest appearance??
I know we brought it up quite a bit on the LOST sites that we want would like James to make a guest appearance on LOST. We talked Nathan Fillion into it!!!!

Bones- Smooth-Sex-Genius type who may steal Bones away (cause-funny)
House-it seems like everyone just got fired/quit so he's going to need new minions-And wouldn't it be fun if they had him do the fake British accent while Hugh Laurie is doing the fake American one?
24-already have had a couple of Buffy alums-he'll feel right at home
Battlestar Gallactica- new cylon, many copies can't die-again he'll feel right at home
The Naked News-just sayin'
I know we brought it up quite a bit on the LOST sites that we want would like James to make a guest appearance on LOST. We talked Nathan Fillion into it!!!!
He required convincing?

Okay okay... I suppose you should be there (but don't you think the bachelorette party should take place in Atlanta?? :D LOL!) I mean I don't suppose they could do that without you... ;)
Well Nathan really didn't have to be convinced - a lot! :D
The Torchwood rumors... Well, maybe wishful thinking on a lot of Spike Lovers who miss their favorite vampire and actor.
There's a great Q&A transcript on JamesMasters.com about how he thinks it's been long enough and he can play a vampire again. It was from a Con in April. Actually there are some very insightful moments into his personal life...
Supposedly Thomas the Vampire from Dresden Files is based on Spike. And James reads for Dresden Files.
Okay - my picks...
LOST - He needs to be either an Other or part of a special military force to bring down the Dharma Initiative.
Grey's Anatomy - he would make a great new Thoracic Surgeon!
I like your suggestion of House! That would be pretty funny!
OKAY Spike Lovers - here's a favorite vid of mine about Spike being all "Soul-having". It was actually quite timely from our Tabula Rasa discussion we had over in Spuffy!! It pokes a bit of fun but you just have to LOVE it!! It's very well-done!

I've thought of another one. The perfect next role for James-a former model turned fashion expert on Ugly Betty. I'm thinking he is sort of bitchy and still poses when he enters a room-also of ambiguous sexuality and wear tight sexy over-the-top clothes.
I have some excellent news about the episode of Torchwood in which James is going to appear. The best part is from the mouth of the man himself!
Although not too detailed, I'm putting it under spoiler cuts, in case anyone doesn't want to read it.
Last weekend, James Marsters talked briefly, though somewhat cryptically, about his guest spot in the upcoming second season of "Torchwood" at the Fangoria convention in New Jersey.
The actor best known to genre fans as Spike in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," said he did a preliminary screening of the episode he shot in Cardiff, Wales, but since then the writers have rewritten the script which means he's heading back across the pond to finish filming his episode.
What should fans expect of Marsters, as he takes on the adult spinoff of "Doctor Who"?
His role is "going to offend some, titillate others - to the point where they would need to finish themselves off afterwards." He also said that Brits are more liberal in their approach to sex and sexuality than Americans, but wouldn't spill the beans on what exactly we'll happen during his stay. However, there were implications that something "omnisexual" was going to happen in the episode.
"Torchwood," an anagram of "Doctor Who," is a secret task force that deals with alien encounters. John Barrowman plays ageless omnisexual time agent Captain Jack Harkness, who leads the Cardiff-based team. The series was created by Russell T Davies, who is responsible for reviving the series "Doctor Who."
"Torchwood" Season 1 will air on BBC America beginning Sept. 9.

Spike Is Omnisexual For "Torchwood" - by Garth Franklin
James Marsters, best known for his roles as Spike on "Buffy" and Dr. Milton Fine on "Smallville", talked up his guest role in the second season of raunchy BBC sci-fi series "Torchwood".
Marsters tells Syfy Portal that his role is "going to offend some, titillate others - to the point where they would need to finish themselves off afterwards."
Whilst he wouldn't be specific, the hint is that something "omnisexual" was going to happen in the episode - which would fit right in with the cast as each of the five main cast members have shared smooching and love affairs with members of both genders.

AHA! Well, this would fit in with all the "slash" fantasies that have been thrown out there lately as well as the some of the Q&A's at the conventions!! Most centering on
Whether he would participate in a love scene with another man!
Guess we have our answer! (maybe) :D
I don't think James has ever been against the notion of being intimate with other guys in front of the camera. In fact (like I always keep on reminding people :D ), there was once a film that James had signed up for - Venetian Heat - starring Heath Ledger, where he would have to kiss Heath. James was a little uneasy about that (not in a homophobic way, though) but thought the role was way to good to refuse. To this day I keep on wondering whether it was an initial draft of Brokeback Mountain that he had read.
I can't wait to watch James on Torchwood! I've never watched the show (simple because they don't air it here and it's not out on DVD) but this time, I'll have to make some arrangements. ;)
Never watched Torchwood, and it doesn't really sound like a show I'd be interested in, so I probably won't tune in...
but as far as what other shows I'd like to see him on...
Grey's Anatomy - he would make a great new Thoracic Surgeon!
He'd be GREAT! on Grey's! I could see him matched up with Izzy. (cause she and George really don't do it for me.) We could call him McHottie, or something...
I think it's also be fun to see him on 24...there are all kinds of possibilities there...:)
As much as I would love to watch James on Grey's Anatomy, I don't think he would be up for it. He's already declined a major role on 'Smallville' because he wants to spend more time with his kids and I think that anything the show would have to offer would be too boring for him. He almost, always signs up for off-beat roles or something that would challenge him.
I think the writing on Grey's Anatomy is superb at times, so who knows? Maybe they will have something good to offer him. Shonda Rhimes is a self-proclaimed 'Buffy' fan, and now with Marti on board, things could only get so much better. Perhaps they will have something good to offer him on the new spin-off, 'Private Practice'? As far as I know, Marti is the showrunner for that one and I'm sure she'd love to have him on board. I, for one, would love to see him on TV again; be it on Grey's or anything else.
ThePoet's<3
10-07-07, 05:20 AM
I would look for him on Grey's or Private before anything else - especially if Marti is on board!! She loves her James!! (Spuffy! Spuffy! Spuffy!)
I had also heard they had approached Sean Bean for Venetian Heat as well! James and Sean - it would be tough!! My two favorite McBeth's up "against" each other - WOW!
But I don't know about him turning down a constant role... He's got mouths to feed and talks about it quite a bit at the cons. He was looking into a play called "The Little Dog Laughed" in New York before the financial backing went south. That would have had him away from the kids for at least 3 mos.
I think the key for him now is $$$ + good role.
Whatever happened to him making some type of Shakespearean movie? I remember reading some where that he was in 'talks' with making a movie - but this was quite a while ago...I wonder what ever came of it?

They cancelled out. He announced it and then it cancelled. For some reason everyone is having a problem with the "making of McBeth"! Sean Bean has been wanting it made into a movie for quite some time - no luck. Although there has been talk of making it into a German version.
I would just be happy to see James "weekly" again!!

If James is running low on money, it's got to be all of the Playstation 3 games he buys, because every time someone buys a BtVS or Spike-centric DVD, James gets a nice percentage. However, the shows aren't on television much anymore, so it's possible that less people are into BtVS and Spike, meaning that James needs to find work. Any kind of work.
I lost track of what James has been up to a while ago, and then a week or so ago I walked in on my Grandma watching him on Saving Grace. Even my Grandma said he looked a little older, but we both believe that it's because his hair is too dark. He could still pull off playing Spike if he wanted to.

Well if he is need of cash it looks like he should be getting plenty from the DragonCon crowd. The man is seriously working every angle. He is appearing, doing a concert, hosting a weird pay to go meet him party thing, and is the most expensive photo-op there. And Alas-I have to miss it all.

You poor thing. I wonder what it's like to have conventions and concerts as two main sources of income. Seriously, if he's that expensive, he might end up making more at that convention than for any of his guest roles, with the exception of the ever-popular Spike of course. I don't think anyone could call him a starving actor, much less a starving actor/father/uncle.

Well, I'm certainly doing my level best to "employ" him!!
He did seem a bit older - he has made jokes of dying his hair (among other things...;0 ). But yes - I think he could play Spike again.

Spike's one of my favorite characters for two main reasons: He's easy on the eyes and he's hilarious. The episodes that I like most are the ones with really fun Spike scenes, like Doomed, when Spike went through that suicidal thing because he thought that he was useless, and then when he found out he could hurt demons, he was bugging The Scoobies to get Buffy and take him out fighting. Then there was that part in Goodbye Iowa, when Spike said to Riley, "If you really are trying to kill her," and then gave him the thumbs up, smiling. Moments like that make me like Spike the most.
I'll let you know what he smelled like!
If you start sniffing him you might start a security issue. Doesn't James travel with hoardes of security people around him? A girl who goes to conventions told me that once.

I absolutely agree! He had some of the funniest parts in Buffy in Season Four! I like the "thumbs up" scene also!! Love the goofy smile!!
If you start sniffing him you might start a security issue. Doesn't James travel with hoardes of security people around him? A girl who goes to conventions told me that once.
You know, it's funny - i have heard that he doesn't like security at all!! And that they usually have to BEG him to have security guards at his appearances - especially concerts. In fact the last time he appeared at Dragon*Con, the Fire Marshall threatened to close the concert down because 1) too crowded and 2) - No security!!
However - my personal thoughts is that - yes - he should have security. If not only for HIM at least for the FANS! They will rip each other's throats out to see/touch him!
Now the smelling part... I have seen pictures of him with other fans in these "private photo" sessions. In one he has his arm looped around a girl's neck and in another he is just standing with his arm around her waist. If I know my nose - I will be able to smell him!!!:D He gets up close and personal in these private photo sessions. I guess to give fans what they are paying for.
But yes - I think random picture taking is frowned upon - depending on the convention rules. At autograph signings actors are usually told not to "pose" with fans in photos. It holds up the line and that's not what they are being payed for!! (Almighty $$ strikes again!) In fact, I have heard James himself say to a fan he couldn't pose for a picture but if he just so happens to look up at the same time she takes his picture - well you just can't help how that happens!!
Pictures at the concerts and QA's are okay.
BTW Spike/James lovers!! Did you see that James is going to be guest starring - "regularly" - on "Without a Trace"?!?!? OH! wouldn't it be great if they spin off and give him a show?!? We could see him every week!!
I'm not a fan of WAT but I will be if James is there!!!
Also - it looks like (on IMDB) the Venetian Heat movie is being "bandied" about again. This time they have renamed it "Out of the Night". Okay. ;0

I downloaded it from itunes. It was a disappointingly small part and also of course there is the whole murder thing-but he looked great. And it was fun hearing the subtle southern accent.

Umm my fiancee pointed out that there are like hundreds of baseballs games a year-thought I'd pass that on. We actually considered flying down the day after the wedding-but my lusting after another man seemed like an inappropriate honeymoon activity.
I don't think I would have gone to the party thing though-It's a bit like paying someone to be your friend. Also I feel like it is demeaning for him. I know I'm strange and he's a big boy who can take care of himself.
You'll have to post some pics- I can't wait. Mostly I'm jealous that you get to hear the new songs live. So pretty.

Yeah, I know... But my friend who is going with me isn't really into him that much. And although she was sweet and said she would go to the game by herself, I couldn't let her do that. I mean, I wouldn't go by myself!! And all of the activities are a little strange - paying someone to take pictures wit you, sign his name - who's the one who is being demeaned?!? ME!!:D As my mother always said... "A fool and his money are soon parted." ;)

Appy polly loggies Mods, if this thread or similar already exists, but I really felt the need to discuss (read: dissect) Spike, who for me is the most interesting character in the entire Jossverse. I realise this has been discussed time and time again on the old forum, but I'd like to dig it up. :D
Spike fascinates me, since I find him so layered and complex. I'll leave the big stuff for now, but just little comments he comes out with make me completely rethink his character. For example, when sparring with Illyria in Time Bomb(?), and he successfully hits her, she remarks that he is weak for "adapting", and Spike remarks, quite proudly, that vampires "do that". Well, to me, vampires don't adapt at all! That's the reason why Buffy or Angel or whoever is on Fang Duty can easily slay Generic Alleyway/Graveyard Vamp, since they are all the same in terms of ambition, drive, fighting style. It's the villains who have been close to our heroes that cause them problems, since they use psychological tactics, understand and predict how they will fight and react to situations. So for me, understanding and adapting to someone is far more a human quality than a demon quality. If we assume this is true, then what Spike says is quite revealing, in that he considers this 'human' part of himself to be as much a part of OverallSpike as he considers the demon side. And out of all most of the vampires on screen, he appears to retain most of his original human characteristics and personality traits, no matter how hard he tries to hide them.
There's another interesting point - Spike seems to like hiding his 'roots', as it were, losing his formal aristocratic accent, changing his name to Spike, enjoying brawling and the pleasure of living in the moment. Yet when he is at his most vulnerable (thinking now of end of Season 7, holding Buffy moment, and the 'we were victims too' speech to Angel after the Dana incident), he appears to revert very much to his humanity, admitting his love, reading poetry on his final day etc. Yet he claims as the title says above, that he's "not much for self reflection"; yet he can lookly deeply enough into other people, calling people on their BS, and revealing slightly uncomfortable truths. And I feel that's a bit of a fib - he hunts for a soul after all! I guess the contrast to be made here is with Angel, in that Angel wallows in his guilt, and while I think Spike certainly feels it too, he just 'gets on with it'. His dreams of Buffy in S5 are almost accepted without challenge, as though he can't fight his impulses - flashback to 'it's blood, children' speech a la S3 to Bangel - and he fights evil for the sake of it, rather than bigger picture Spike. Which is why the Shanshu bit, for me (especially after Spike gives up the notion of chasing after Buffy) feels a bit awkward in Angel S5.
But anyway. Opinions please! What makes Spike the man (sorry, demon, vampire - whatever, debate it amongst yourselves) he is? What drives him? Is he really in control, or does he go with the flow? Or perhaps there's a degree of control in completely letting go for him (thinking Fight Club here, "it's only by losing everything we are free to do anything..." etc) Could he love Buffy pre-soul, post-chip? Did he actually intend to get the soul? How is he different/similar from/to Buffy/Angel/other characters?

Another great thread :D
For example, when sparring with Illyria in Time Bomb(?), and he successfully hits her, she remarks that he is weak for "adapting", and Spike remarks, quite proudly, that vampires "do that". Well, to me, vampires don't adapt at all! That's the reason why Buffy or Angel or whoever is on Fang Duty can easily slay Generic Alleyway/Graveyard Vamp, since they are all the same in terms of ambition, drive, fighting style.
IMO I think that vampires do adapt, just given time. As for example, Angel. Like any other vampire when he rose from his grave he wouldn't have been the strong successful vampire he was in later years. Given time vampires do adapt, grow more powerful, more wiser it is just that in some cases they don't survive long enough for this to happen :) Darla, Angel and the Master seem to know quite a lot about what it means to be a vampire, how to survive and live in that world and IMO this couldn't have just happened as soon as they were sired.
It's the villains who have been close to our heroes that cause them problems, since they use psychological tactics, understand and predict how they will fight and react to situations. So for me, understanding and adapting to someone is far more a human quality than a demon quality.
I think it is much more of a human quality than a demon quality, but after all often vampires do retain part of their humanity like Spike. Harmony is a pretty big example of a vampire who completely braces her humanity and wears her heart (or lack thereof) on her sleeve. James and Elizabeth were similair, even Angelus was to some extent. He retained some of that hatred he had for his father, only it became greater and he was more free to express it as a vampire which is why he felt he had to go kill them.
Spike does seem to have retained more of the humanity in him than other vamps, though I wish it was more thoroughly explained than the terrible LMPTM. The fact that Spike tries so hard to be the bad boy indicates that the poet is still partly there inside of him, if it wasn't then there would be no reason for him to try and be something he is not.
I don't think many vampires can be impartial to their past life, even the most sadistic and fierce of them, Angelus, kills his parents because of what their relationship was like when he was human. Dru harbours ill feelings towards Angelus even, torturing Angel for killing her parents and seeming genuingly upset that he killed them. Spike on the otherhand seems incredibly ashamed of his human life, perhaps because people always mocked him. He tortures those who mocked him with railroad Spikes, much in the same way Angelus killed his father.
Yet he claims as the title says above, that he's "not much for self reflection"; yet he can lookly deeply enough into other people, calling people on their BS, and revealing slightly uncomfortable truths. And I feel that's a bit of a fib - he hunts for a soul after all!
Spike often can see situations that he isn't a part of alot more clearly. Whether or not this is because Spike has a knack for this or it is simply because he is detached from the group is debatable. After all Spike comes unhealthly obsessive towards Buffy in s6, evident in the AR scene. In this situation he is a player in the situation, he can't see things clearly because of his dark nature; when he gets his soul though he states how he can now see things clearly. So whether or not Spike just saw others more clearly because he wasn't a part of them, he was an outside looking in- well I'm not to sure but I think this may be why.
I guess the contrast to be made here is with Angel, in that Angel wallows in his guilt, and while I think Spike certainly feels it too, he just 'gets on with it'.
I'm not entirley comfortable with how Spike talks about his evil past, he even expresses nostalgia for it which I find a little unnerving. However, he does get on with it which is better than brooding for 90 years alone, granted he did have more help than Angel; Buffy was the big factor in motivating both vampires.
Yeah I think this does demonstrate that Spike goes with the flow, he states in Touched how he isn't known for being a thinker, he is more spontaneous which is shown in some of his failed plans when trying to kill Buffy.

WOOHOO!!! Thanks DK for that little nugget of GOLD!!!
Seems you were right with the House thing and seems we were both right with Grey's Anatomy!!! COME OOOOOOOONN MARTI NOXON!!!! We want to see James in scrubs!!!
And I'm so glad his character arc is longer than one episode in WAT!! I've started getting into the show more so I can be more familiar with the characters. I always enjoy it when I watch it - don't know why I haven't. Does it come on Wednesday nights?? If it's up against LOST well you can forget it. James against Josh? YIKES!!!! Battle of my heart over my HOT HONEYS!!
However... I don't want to miss James "drawing his gun manfully"...  :D
MARSTER UPDATE!!!
James will be appearing in Without a Trace September 27th 2007!!
Also! James will have a new CD out just in time for CHRISTMAS!!!!
James will be making a 2nd Torchwood appearance!!!
Here's some Spoilage from Dragon*Con about the first episode of Torchwood in which James appears...
Definite KISSING of John Barrowman!!! James talked about his experience!!! LOL!! It was a "stitch"! His character is also a Time Agent who happens to be an ex-lover of Capt. Jack's. He is omnisexual just like Capt. Jack. Apparently they have a bar fight and while fighting kiss passionately!
Personal moment... Met James Marsters this weekend at Dragon*Con! Went to all 3 Q&A's, autograph signings and photo ops - the man is just the sweetest guy you would ever want to meet! I don't know where he comes up with the energy (Red Bull??) to be non-stop friendly, sweet and genuinely interested in other people - i.e. his fans. Yeah, he was being paid to be there - but you know - I'm paid to be at my job every day and even on my best days I don't think I can summon that much positive energy! He just loves being around people and talking to people.
Also - he is so talented! I had never heard him in person - just YouTube stuff - he is AWESOME!
Okay - personal moment over!!
OH! BTW - He smells DELICIOUS!!!

I finally saw Torchwood last Saturday- and I loved it as I much as I expected to, so add in JM and... whoa I passed out from joy for a sec or two there.
Also regarding the fact that he smells delicious-does this mean he has finally quit smoking?

Alas, no the sweet puppy is still smokin' away. However I never SAW him smoke.
What we decided is that he uses Nicotine patches during the day to keep the craving away and probably smokes at night when he's not so much around the public.
Also at one of the Q&A's (the Sunday one - it's up on YouTube now) you can watch him "re-patch" during the session. It's quite sneaky the little devil! LOL!!
But when I hugged him - TWICE - I didn't smell any smoke on him - just a nice clean smell.
The man drinks an extraordinary amount of caffiene! I thought I was pretty bad! Each time I saw him he had a Red Bull or a Star Buck's in hand.
He LOVES to chat! He laughed when I handed him my Spike and Dru comic that Juliet Landau hated - but she signed it. He looked over at her (their tables were side-by-side) and smiled and said, "I'm really surprised she signed this!"
I told him "Yeah, I know the story. It wasn't the story she didn't like it was the artwork". I told him the story was excellent.
The concert was fantastic! He has a new song that will make your toes curl!! It's called "Looking At You". It's on YouTube as well.
Also, he quoted Shakespeare twice!! I LOVE to hear him quote the Bard!! He makes it SO HOTT!!! It brought tears to my eyes and goosebumps on my arms!!!
When someone said something about his part on Witout a Trace only being 5 episodes he remarked, "Yeah, that's what they said about Spike, too!"
He seemed very interested in doing a "prodedural" show. So, maybe they could spin him off!!!!
NEW!!**** James' September Q&A is up on his website!! James has some really good love advice for Spike!!:D  JM Q&A (http://www.jamesmarsters.com/qa.html)

So I saw Superman Doomsday last night. It was pretty good. Weird to hear James Marsters but not see him. (But obviously better than neither ;)) JM did a lovely job sounding ultra-evil and warped. Seriously warped. Also Adam Baldwin as Superman-nifty.
Anyway-check it out.
P.S. They gave Lex JM's cheekbones. :)

Re Torchwood and the JM/JB kiss...there is not enough squee in the world.
Re the Spike discussion thread stuff (I think it was merged from another thread?)
For example, when sparring with Illyria in Time Bomb(?), and he successfully hits her, she remarks that he is weak for "adapting", and Spike remarks, quite proudly, that vampires "do that". Well, to me, vampires don't adapt at all!
And when Spike first appears in season 2, he says exactly that...when he calls Angel an "Uncle Tom" for becoming good, he says "we" don't change: "Not us, not demons." However, the way he lives his life is a testament to this being a bit of a porkie pie. At least where Spike himself is concerned.
Interesting choice of word, Uncle Tom (ie a black man adopting white characteristics to ingratiate himself with white authority figures). The idea of a vampire with a soul, in Spike's unsouled view, is kind of a second-class wannabe human. And that's what he chooses to become later.
And out of all most of the vampires on screen, he appears to retain most of his original human characteristics and personality traits, no matter how hard he tries to hide them.
I wonder, if he'd fallen in with Dru and Angelus and Darla if they were just human bad girls and boys...perhaps he would've become Spike in the same way? I think it's as much rubbing up against "badass" company that made him change as actually becoming a vampire. It was a way of running from his failings as a human...but he could've done that as a human too. Vamping was perhaps a catalyst rather than a cause?
I wonder if his statement about vampires not changing in season 2 is partly a way of pretending that he didn't become Spike, he was always Spike. Trying to pretend that the costume is the real man. But after he gets a soul, he starts to realise that the "costume...didn't work".
In Angel (which I don't really like to refer to re Spike cos he's so badly written on that show!) when he says about vampires adapting, I think this is perhaps him just trying to make a point…but also part of his lack of self reflection and his tendency to rewrite his own past (much like the communist party!).
Spike does seem to have retained more of the humanity in him than other vamps, though I wish it was more thoroughly explained than the terrible LMPTM.
I wrote quite a long post about LMPTM in the Spike’s mother thread…might repost here cos…yes, that ep did NOT do a good job of reflecting on Spike. Or at least…it was problematic.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I posted this in another thread but I thought it might be of interest to people wanting to investigate/dissect/analyse/generally poke around in the psyche of Spike…the discussion was about Spike’s attitude to his ma in Lies My Parents Told Me….
I found LMPTM unsatisfying in the way it portrayed Spike's attitude... something about it just jarred and felt off...until I started to read it as Lies We Tell Ourselves. When Spike tells Wood that his mother loved him, I got the impression that he was trying to convince himself Trying to make things seem very simple, when actually it's muddier than he wanted to believe - his transition from human-demon-vampirewithasoul being a case in point. His speech (well, conversation, but there's a speechy quality to it) to Robin during their final confrontation reminds me a little of Giles's words in Lie to Me about everything being terribly simple, and involving black and white hats:
Quote:
SPIKE
I don't give a piss about your mum. She was a slayer. I was a vampire. (Spike kicks Robin) That's the way the game is played.
He moves things away from questions of agency to the image of vampire and slayer as pawns in a game. This rhetoric is something he's used in the past when trying to convince himself that life is simple and there's a natural order, a simple balance of bad and good. As for example at the end of season 6, when he's ranting about the chip, trying to rid himself of the guilty, confusing images of attempting to rape Buffy.
Quote:
SPIKE: You know, everything used to be so clear. Slayer. Vampire. Vampire kills Slayer, sucks her dry, picks his teeth with her bones. It's always been that way.
Has it? Even when Spike was in his evilest phase, things were never simple. Killing slayers wasn't just a game, or rather, the game was complex and psychological. It was a way of proving he was worthy - to Dru, to Angelus. It was about sex, it was about power, it was about fulfilling a fantasy. The language he uses talking to the Chinese slayer is charged with teh secks: "Just like I pictured it. This good for you?" And then, talking to Dru after: "You ever hear them saying the blood of a Slayer is a powerful aphrodisiac?"
It's interesting that Spike, who's often seen as a "grey area" character, craves simplicity. Again, in Seeing Red:
Quote:
SPIKE: (angrily) It's the chip! Steel and wires and silicon. (sighs) It won't let me be a monster. (quietly) And I can't be a man. I'm nothing.
He sees it as an either/or deal....you have to be one thing or the other, or you're nothing. There's no room for hybridity.
When he's talking to Wood, imagining that his mother was simply an evil demon makes it easier to handle the pain. While, as Angel is about to point out re evil Willow before Buffy gives him an evil of her own... vampires do tend to take on aspects of the person they were before. So there's nothing to say that Mrs Pratt didn't have the feelings that her demon self expressed so brutally. She may well have loved her son, but it may also have been far more complex than that. She may well have felt smothered by him, unable to live her own life...or at least conflicted about his constant presence.
Ooh, just noticed something...when Spike tells Wood about his relationship with Mommy Dearest, he phrases it like this:
"I'll tell you a story about a mother and son. See, like you, I loved my mother. So much so I turned her into a vampire... (nods) so we could be together forever. She said some nasty bits to me after I did that. Been weighing on me for quite some time. (points at Robin) But you helped me figure something out. You see, unlike you, I had a mother who loved me back. When I sired her, I set loose a demon, and it tore into me, but it was the demon talking, not her. (stands) I realize that now. (walks toward the computer) My mother loved me with all her heart. I was her world. (clicks the mouse, playing the recording again)."
He describes it as a story. Now, I don't think he means consciously to undermine the truth of it. But putting it like that is telling - because it is a story, it's just one version of events. One in which mothers wear white bonnets and everyone lives happily ever after. Ok, they don't. But the resolution is all terribly simple, in Spike's mind. Rather like Giles's lie version of reality.
Now, I don't believe that Spike is twisting the truth on purpose. But I think he's believing what he wants and needs to believe in order to move on. Because the truth might just be too unbearable.

Thanks Moscow Watcher for posting the WaT pics!!! He looks and was fabulous!
And isn't he adorable in his bio pic!
I'm really enjoying reading the comments he had about each of the plays he's previously been involved. JamesMarsters.com - go to "Theater"
Wolfie that was a great commentary - thanks for bringing those discussions over!!
I wonder if his statement about vampires not changing in season 2 is partly a way of pretending that he didn't become Spike, he was always Spike. Trying to pretend that the costume is the real man. But after he gets a soul, he starts to realise that the "costume...didn't work".
This is a very interesting comment. I've often wondered about how the demon alters the person it inhabits making it a vampire.
For instance we have William a sensitive, romantic, gentle, creative, talented young man who becoms basically an anarchist - no rules, problems with authority, preoccupied with violence. His romantic personality also tends to take on extremes - (not a good word choice) - more confidence I suppose. He's assured in his abilities to attract women and conduct relationships. Now this is somewhat exploited by Drusilla - but I don't think he minds...:)
I've often wondered how his poetry was affected and wished that Joss/writers had given us some examples. If he was such a lousy poet as a human - what type of poet was he as a vampire? Or did he even write anymore?
But Angelus (and I'm not debating Angel/Angelus because frankly I don't have as much knowledge about him) doesn't seem to have that exreme a swing in his personality. He was "rowdy" as a young Liam and then became fully evil as Angelus.
In Spike's case - it seems to have brought out an internal struggle from within. A young man feeling "powerless" in love (because he needed to express it through his poetry?) and powerless against his peers becomes confident in love and a power against authority.
The costume he talks about is one we all wear in life. There's what we are and what we want people to perceive us to be. And sometimes even we become confused between the two.
Perhaps now thhat he has the soul he doesn't have to hide behind either anymore and that's what the "costume" remark means. He tried to hide the man who almost raped the woman he loved. But there is no hiding that man now. There's only coming to terms and moving on with it. And I think it's very telling that Buffy gave him the chance to do that. She could have continually haunted him with that experience.
Now, I don't believe that Spike is twisting the truth on purpose. But I think he's believing what he wants and needs to believe in order to move on. Because the truth might just be too unbearable.
"He is believing what he wants and needs to believe in order to move on."
Excellent choice of words! Again, we do the same thing. Sometimes it's the pure and simple truth that we finally accept to move on. But sometimes we believe our own version of the truth to move on. Which is worse? The pure truth or the distorted truth? If it helped Spike to move on beyond his sins and find forgiveness or acceptance and peace does it matter?
IMO as a demon himself he initially believed what his demon-altered mother told him about wishing he had never been born and the ugly implication that he was in love with her.
In LMMTM what he was telling Robin Wood was that he was accepting the sweet, gentle woman's words and actions rather than the distorted version of the demon. He had that choice. Robin didn't. The truth for Robin was that his mother accepted the call of the Slayer over her call to be his mother.
IF we take the Yin/Yang approach was Spike's sweet, adoring, yet maternally concerned mother contorted into the extreme? Did this woman lie beneath? Was this the internal struggle she dealt with and Spike released in the demon?

According to an interview of John Barrowman (who plays Captain Jack) there is a scene which includes both a bar fight and smoochies between his character and James' character. James seems to have corroborated this at convention appearances.

The writing isn't that bad. Sure it's indulgent (good word choice Wolfie), but what's wrong with an hour of beautiful self indulgence each week. Surely we deserve that for having to live in a world where Joss currently has no TV show. The promised snogging, it's like a fanfic writer got control of the show. Actually, it is often like that on Torchwood. ;)

Torchwood on the whole is like watching one long series of 'badfics' strung togther. I think out of the entire season only about 4 episodes were worth watching.
I really wanted to like it too, but ended up being sooo disappointed with the end result, and judging by the English press I wasn't the only one.
Thats why I'm hoping to see big improvements in series two.
Of course it helps that James is going to in two episodes, and I'll be watching those and enjoying them whatever happens.....*g*

Yeah, I felt it had a lot of good will stored up from its link to Doctor Who (which I love) but it didn't deliver. However, I'm very curious to see James' part in it - especially if he's playing a bit of a nutter. I'd like to see him play a psychopath :)

James has made two appearance in WAT. Both were fairly small - one was pretty miniscule! If you blinked - you missed it! But in both he was wonderful! He has 3 appearances left unless they ask him back for more. I'm hoping they will!
I have to say James/John episode of Torchwood is the most anticipated Slash-scene I've ever wanted to see! I'm not a fan of Slash (to borrow fan-fic terminology) but James and John are two gorgeous guys! And to hear James's description of his experiences on Torchwood - well it was pretty hilarious!
Also - don't forget to see James in the movie "P.S. I Love You" also starring Hilary Swank, Gerry Butler, and Kathy Bates. the premiere is December 21st 2007.

Yay! My CD came today-I've already got it uploaded onto my Ipod-tomorrow's commute will be way more bluesy than normal. *sighs dreamily* (here's hoping I can still pay enough attention that I get off the metro at the right spot.) And may I add that the pictures on the covers are quite aesthetically pleasing.
Funny that you mention the broken finger; a friend and I spent several minutes coming up with interesting ways he might have broken it. Some were so good that I almost hope it remains a mystery.
About James' broken finger, I think I read in an article where he was interviewed, that he broke it while filming in Vancouver (for what, I don't know- maybe WAT?). He woke up to go to the washroom and he tripped on his shoes or something. I remmeber this cause he was making fun of himself, and how his first thoughts in the split second that it happened, was to "protect the face". Weird story, I know...I'll need to find that article.

Funny you say about "wrinkling" his face up - he sure did on the front cover!! Interesting shots they went with for the cover and insides. But James loves to touch his face so it's perfect!
I have heard from a friend who saw it on another Forum (hope this is reliable!) that James' next appearance on WAT will be December 6th. However, with the Writer's Strike going on... Who knows when it will be!!
ALSO! There is some "buzz" about James joining the cast with Eliza Dushku in her new series "Dollhouse" that will probably come out next year.

I watched Dragon Ball Z when I was a kid and the character he is playing was always my favourite. He really isn't creepy at all, he actually becomes a father figure to the heroes son.
If James can play a character who has platinum blonde hair, a bumpy forhead and fangs for seven years I'm sure we can look past the green skin ;)

Ok, first of all-I loved the hair, so no problem there.
The bumpies went away most of the time and the fangs...well actually I'm pretty ok with those too. :D
It will be interesting to see if his character has some arc in the movie or is strictly a villain.

Well they seem to have changed quite a bit of the canon of the Dragonball verse already. From what I've heard the main character and hero of this movie will be an adult, and in the the character James plays was only ever a villain for a short time at a time in which the hero was a child. By the time the hero (Goku) had grown up, he was friends with James' character. So I'm not sure exactly what they are doing with the entire thing.
God now I sound like a geek...

I like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (because that's the song his niece helped him write - she wanted a 3rd verse about a "nice girl" ;) ) 7
I like track 4 - would have liked Truth Is (A Heavy Stone) in it's place.
Yes - he is so the crackuh...
BTW James fans - Q&A's are up on his website... Nice to know he's a "Handyman"... ;)

Yeah I didn't really do the randy bachelorette thing...too many of my good friends are male. In lieu of the hen night deal, I have however garnered a promise from my best female friend (maid of honor actually) to attend a James Marsters concert with me at the next reasonable opportunity. I'm kinda hoping my husband will stay home so we can do the fangirl thing :D . Is that just wrong :s ?
The first time I heard that track we were in the car and you know that the naughtiness just comes out of nowhere, it's like sweet, sweet, sweet, naughty, sweet, sweet, sweet. My husband was so startled he almost ran a light. I thought, "oh this must be the naughty song Poet was mentioning".
Now I giggle pretty much every time. It is also the only line I don't sing along too. The whole thing is funny because I'm certain if it was on someone else's album it wouldn't have warranted more than an eyebrow raise. Clearly something about James Marsters makes me thirteen years old again. (Here's hoping I don't decide to dye my hair black again.)
The other song that makes me giggle is Louise-there must be a good story behind that one. "you're beautiful, you're amazing, you're no wookie
sometimes I'm a dick man" Every time I hear it I just think, seriously tell me you did not call a girl a wookie.

NOOOooo... That not wrong at all!! You have to take your best GF so you can giggle and squee and hoot and holler!!

Tee hee hee! I know - that one's a little embarassing to belt out when your singing along!! All those flowers and gardens and blossoms, and water into wine... *whew* Is it hott in here or is it just me?? :p

Yeah the last part of that song was hard to decipher at first - but he says "Punch it Chewie" in the middle of the song - so then it sort of made sense about the wookie thing!
I have a friend who is at his concert tonight in Cardiff. I am waiting with baited breath to hear who was there and how it went.

Jealousy isn't even an adequate descriptor. What's bigger? Hmmm...envy-nope I need something more powerful. :Man I wish I was at that show. James Marsters and Torchwood folks-I would have squeed until I had no voice left-that or passed out entirely.
Has he mentioned officially if he is referring to the Torchwood actress in the line in Layabout: "and I//hope Naoko
knows her lines//well enough today
so that I//can come home//to you"? I figure he's gotta be talking about her since how many Naoko has he worked with right? Also there's the fake gun reference-he didn't have a gun on Buffy or Smallville-Yes on WAT, but only for a second. I'm leaning towards those both being Torchwood references.
ThePoet's<3
19-11-07, 05:01 AM
No he hasn't said anything officially - but I think it's pretty safe to say that's who he is referring too. There can't be that many Naoko's out there.
Also - it was Naoko he was working with when John Barrowman came in goofing around and pinching the girls on the taa-taa's. James was a little bothered by that ("I've got to kiss THIS guy?") and said to Naoko the part about next time he (JB) does that elbow him in the solar plexus, or head butt him, or step on his foot with your boot!
James said everyone looked at him at him a little "strangely" after that. The next day - he didn't have a single problem with JB - he was VERY professional... ;)

I posted a Spuffy question based on comics so I thought maybe we would talk a little about Spike and how his story is unfolding in Angel: ATF.
We find Spike in Hell-A - obviously paying penence for his part in Not Fade Away. However, he looks like he is living the "High Life"!! He's living in Beverly Hell, in a mansion, with hott demon ho's (supplied by KoC I think:lol: !) galore, and it seems he might either be 1) a willing prisoner of Illyria's 2) a willing partner with Illyria 3) a combination of the two - with "benefits".
OH!! And there's this girl... Spider is her name... What's up with her?? Black hat? White hat?? Think she's just the next Dru, Harmony, Goth-date-to-Xander's-wedding, ______________(fill in the blank)?? Or do we think there's something more??
- What's your initial reaction to Spike's predicament??
- Is Spike going to be an ally for the A-Team again?
- What's the pairing of Illyria and Spike?
- What is Spider to Spike?
AND...
Did Spike turn Gunn??

Firstly I don't think we're seeing the full picture yet. There's something going on that I don't think we're privy to just yet.
Yes.
I'm not sure if there is one yet, except both are fellow warriors.
No.

Hey Sue - what do you think of Spider? Just another Harmony-type or Buffy-like? Dru-like? Just a hott chick in in Hell-A?

As I saif in another thread I suspect Spiders a bit of a misdirect. I think she really is there to help Spike, rather the hinder him. I think she was named Spider so we'd think she was a villain.
I'm probaly wrong, but we've only got a few weeks till issue three comes out and then we'll be a little wiser by the sounds of things.

i love spike. i have been absolutely smitten with him since his first appearance on the show. i despised his 'relationship' with buffy, and i didn't like the whole chipped thing [i loved him because he was a total badass, and he became kind of a sissy after he fell in love with her. but i forgive him because he is/was AMAZING]

Are you reading the Angel: After the Fall comics? What do you think about Spike's situation in Hell??

Heh.
James Marsters: In the beginning, I was just cool, bad, and to be killed. I was cannon fodder and [Joss] was very clear about that. And then when I showed up drunk looking for my girlfriend and I was so pathetic, and he said "Oh, there's something human about that. Maybe there is more to this character. Maybe it's actually a character that people can respond to on a human level, and not just think 'Oh, he's blonde and he's killing people -- sexy!'"
I'm glad Joss didn't allow Spike to remain the 2.5-dimensional, cannon-fodder villain we saw in the first half of Season 2, and gave James some material he could really sink his teeth into.

I'd jump in to say that Spike didn't turn Gunn, probably not anyway. I think they thought he was dead and were caught up in the fight and he was dragged away before they noticed.
Don't know enough to say what Spider is to Spike. Illyria, though, I think is as infatuated with him as Illyria can get, which is why she treats him like her 'pet'. Spike is probably half-terrified, half-titillated by this, as one would be.
