Challenge 31: Behold! The Nightmare

I had several ideas for my challenge but then I listened to this song last night and changed my mind. :D "Behold! The Nightmare" by the Smashing Pumpkins. It has these really great ethereal poetic phrases and such a lovely sound...so here's the challenge...

THIS IS NOT A LYRICS CHALLENGE. But you may certainly use the lyrics if you please. But what you really have to do is read over the lyrics and think of something that inspired is by them. It can be a scene, a relationship, a manipulation. Anything really. All I ask is for a brief explanation of how you came up with your entry. :)

Well, I got inspired by the seconed verse of the song. It really reminds me of Willow and Tara realationship through season 6 and after the death of tara. Notice that the "can't go on digging roses grave" is about Tara's feeling and not Willow's.

I was inspired by the chorus of this song to do a (shocker) VM entry :). Like in the song Veronica is still haunted by the memory of her best friend Lilly and in this piece I wanted to show how despite the fact Lilly is gone, Veronica can't let her go completely. Lilly is stuck behind Veronica in the 'forest' of the path, but she's still looking over her shoulder in the future.

I even braved a manipulation for this challenge. :D

First Entry: It's Killing Me

I'm not sure exactly why I was reminded of this scene, but reading the first few lines of the lyrics brought this Spike and Buffy scene to the surface immediately. This is Buffy recognizing that she does want Spike, but for all the wrong reasons, and it's those reasons that are slowly killing her, thus why she needs to get out that relationship. The way I saw this relationship during this part of season six was Buffy changing certain parts of herself so she could make herself accept why she feels the need to be with Spike, then realizing that it is not a path she can follow anymore, which is what the beginning lyrics spoke to me about.

The lyrics

made me think of Spuffy... of how during the time they have known each other they have been so cruel to each other, hurting each other in all the possible ways, but yet they ended up they believing completely in each other. Buffy showed Spike she believed in him at the end of Never Leave Me, while Spike showed the same to Buffy in Touched.
I know it wasn't a lyrical song, but hey, the words fit perfectly..why going crazy looking for something else to put it there as text? :D (I know the text sucks, by the way..I keep sucking at it! All the wallpaper leaves me unsatisfied, actually..but it was either posting it, or throwing away the gazillionth wallpaper I have tried for challenges lately! LOL Oh, well! )

First entry

What/Why/etc...
When I read the lyric I instantly thought of Rory/Dean. However, that was probably because I'd just finished re-watching season 4. I chose to use the actual lyric because I really liked it. In addition, I felt that it really fit with how the relationship was for the two characters. Therefore, I ended up with the "Dean" lyric on the left side and the "Rory" lyric on the right side. Moreover, I added screencaps from moments to further reflect different parts of thier relationship, and with that clearify the pieces of the lyrics I used.

I made a Doctor Who piece. Spoilerish explanation under tag. (spoilers for last 3 episodes of series 3)

The lyric You're so cruel in all you do But still I believe, I believe in you made me think of The Doctor and The Master. Okay I don't know if you watch Doctor Who so long explanation. The Doctor and The Master used to be friends like 800 years ago when they were both kids. Then The Master went insane and turned evil and became The Doctor's arch nemesis. So at one point The Doctor blew up his whole planet and believed he was the last Time Lord left(that's his race). But it turns out The Master survived and he went and enslaved the entire human race and stuff and killed a bunch of people and was just generally evil and cruel. (but hot!) Anyway so when The Doctor defeated The Master he told him he forgives him and offered to take The Master with him in his time machine travels (slashers rejoiced!) but then The Master died and The Doctor cried over his body while he was dying and it was really sad. So basically the lyric made me think of how The Doctor believed he could help The Master even after all the horrible things he's done. Phew.

Okay, so my entry is from Twin Peaks and needs a little explaining. In this piece Leland Palmer kills Maddy. Leland is the murderer of his daughter Laura (identical to Maddy who is her cousin, how weird is that?!), but wait...it wasn't him! He is actually possessed! How confusing is that?! I hope this is alright - because I was very unimaginative and made a character piece. I feel that the lyrics "you'll never take me alive" fit the definition of a Slayer. And Buffy is a Slayer. Me and my unimaginitve little mind think - yay, fanart!

Second Entry: Why

Once again with the Spike and Buffy theme. This song reminds me of their season six relationship a great deal, and reading the lyrics, there is a lot of pain in them and so I chose the moment when Spike tries to force himself on Buffy in "Seeing Red". It was so incredibly painful for both of them, and I think that Spike was honestly out of his mind in this scene, not necessarily evil to the core. He couldn't understand why Buffy couldn't love him, even when he himself should, in theory and with the idea of having no soul, not be able to feel love. So, this piece is from Spike's point of view, but I used Buffy's words to really nail the idea home.

I downlo-bought, the song and I really was inspired by it. Many scenes poped into my head so I may end up with another entry. I went with Charmed 4x01 "Charmed Again: Part One". The idea of the "Nightmare Goes On" just made me feel the pain Piper and Phoebe went through when Prue died and how the nightmare somewhat "ended" with the end of the Charmed Ones, but when Paige is found the "Nightmare Goes On"... So it is kind of a positive spin on the song, since I feel the nightmare is a good thing cause it brought back good. I didn't do the complete end, I wanted to somewhat end on a happy note with the scroll and not a crappy one, so it ends with the sisters together.

Entry One - Nightmare
I dunno why, but when I saw these lyrics I could think of like a montage of things/thoughts written down that reminded me of the Veronica Mars episode "Nobody Puts A Baby In The Corner", when Meg's sister is forced into a cupboard behind the closet and made to write some weird ass things! I wanted to kind of portray this distorted vision from this girl's point of view, as if she's been in the dark too long. Hope you like it! Not done this kinda way of art before :)

It's a Bangel manip. The lyrics I used there sort of reminded me of Buffy's state in BTVS s3 first episodes, when she was still recovering from killing Angel and was having those vivid dreams about them together.

Entry 2

Okay, so I am still getting uber Twin Peaks inspiration from these lyrics. When I re-read through them I just saw the scene where Agent Cooper is staring at the Giant, who is a foreshadowment of the tragic event unfolding at the Palmer house. His 'hallucinations' of the Giant have been widely doubted by other members of the police force close to him, and yet Cooper has no doubt that he is real and trying to lead him the right direction. So I felt it really fit with the lyrics and they really delved into the minds and temperments of the characters.

God it took me ages to think of something for this...brain is just not working. The line "i can't go on digging roses from your grave" eventually put me in mind of the grief that Buffy is going through regarding her mother's death. It's her never ending nightmare She is overwhelmed with it but knows that she has to keep strong for Dawn,for everybody and also her responsibilities of being the slayer. She has to put her grief to one side if you like to concentrate on these things. God I hope you all understand what I'm trying to say:) .

Alrighty, these lyrics just scream Spuffy to me, but I wanted to get away from that because my last two entries dealt with that couple. For some reason, I'm kind of loving 'Enemies' at the moment, and I chose the scene between Buffy, Faith and Angel (playing Angelus) and Buffy's reaction. She might have been acting, but the idea of Angelus being back, of Angel playing him so well, opening up that dark part of his character, really frightened her and it played a lot into why she asked for space from him at the end of the episode.

Chosen mostly because they speak to me about how Buffy feels about her past with Angel and Angelus, that it is still very raw and seeing Angel playing into that so easily and well brings up mixed feelings about him presently. Overall, I'm fairly pleased with how this piece communicates that.

Fourth Entry: Want You Here

In my opinion, Innocence is definitely one of the most heartbreaking episodes of Buffy because of Angelus, how cruelly he treats her and Angel's love, as well as realizing that it's her fault (in her eyes) that Angelus is there in the first place. So this piece is about Buffy when she cries in her room, remembering Angel and wanting him back, wanting things to go back to the way they were before Angelus. I chose a Damien Rice song to get that point across, called 'I Remember', which says what the piece is saying pretty bluntly. The lyrics that inspired this piece are:

This is a nightmare for Buffy, and the pain she is feeling is so raw, which the first half talks to.

About:

Basically I wanted to have this motion of Dean smiling happy, but then turning around to face the images of his mother in WIAWSNB and seeing her, but there's this tear between them, and she's out of reach. And basically I really wanted this image of Dean realising she is still dead, and just focussing on the memories he has of his mother by looking away, but then after it all, I wanted Dean to be facing the whole scene, but then turning to look off the page, and realising that he can move on from this. Although he's had to deal with the fact his mother is dead all over again, he can move on. That was basically the nightmare, I was going for. Hope it made sense.

To be inspired by lyrics I have to listen to the song. I was most touched by the pacing, simple and undemanding, but inevitably moving forward. I wanted to capture the feeling of being caught in limbo. Wanting to stay in the moment yet having no choice but to continue on. So many times we see the boys in the car at night struggling against all the dark emotions and events pulling them down. So much you can see them want to give up but instead the Impala carries them onto the next thing usually bringing only another trauma. This cyclical moving forward but really going nowhere is what I felt with the song. I chose so set the scene at twilight to emphasize the sense of limbo.

This piece is from the episode "Leave It To Beaver". it's when Aaron runs after Veronica because she found and took the Sex tapes of him and Lily. That all thing right from the start when she see him in her car while driving is a totall nightmare! that all time i was so intense and wanted to find out what's gonna happen next. And Veronica was so scared (just like in a nightmare)

This piece is about the night Buffy and Angel spent together and how Angelus came out of that night and it's Buffy nightmare, but for the first few days she still belives Angel can come back to her.

This is Buffy as a fallen angel. I took my inspiration from that she died and then was ripped from heaven. I tried to make it look as if her wings are on fire. Hope it works. :)

That red is such a punch! I love how it looks all cracked too. But the red is just really very nice.

The blue tones in this are just so unbelievably pretty and it such a nice juxtapostion to the chaos and stress of the scene. I love how soothing the tones are against the harshness of the actions.

So pretty. I love the texture of their skin and the sort of sweeping light that runs through it. It's beautiful and haunting. Like the song itself. :)

What I like most is that you used the lyrics and shook them around a bit to get something new. It's so interesting. Having Buffy hold the rose is also a nice finishing touch.

Okay, so I honestly think this is my fave thing by you ever. It's so amazing I could just stare at it for hours. Okay, maybe not hours. But longer than I could at most fanarts!! :D Your text is amazing, the brush wrk is cool, the compostion is awesome, the bubbly texture just looks so yummy. I LOVE THIS!! :heart:
