Challenge 28. Daddy Issues

Okay, so I suck at challenges. Basically I came up with this title and then thought of how it could be interpreted, and so came up with three categories for this challenge. (I also included 2 examples for each category, originally I had 3 for each but I thought that was overkill, :S)

1. Issues with Dad.
This can be anything from an argument that happened just the once, or it can be a longstanding disagreement. So long as there is some form of 'issue' between a child and their father it falls into this category.
Examples: Wesley in Lineage (Angel), Veronica's disagreement with Keith over Harmony in Veronica Mars.

2. Daddy Complex
This category is more for the kids who have been affected by something their dad did in the past and are now projecting this into their current life and relationships.
Examples: the sisters' in Charmed issues from their father's absence; Meredith's abandonment issues in Grey's Anatomy.

3. Not My Father
This category is slightly different, as I thought the title could also be interpreted as a Step-father coming in, or someone imposing on a child's life and taking up a fatherly role when they're not actually the child's father.
Examples: Buffy in Ted (BtVS); Holtz's relationship with Connor (Angel)

And just to be really clear, for all categories, there is supposed to be some kind of underlying issue or negative feeling between the father (or father figure) and child.

Rules

Size: The regular wallpaper sizes: 800x600 or 1024x768, or a wallscroll.
Entries: A maximum of three for each category, and a maximum of one wallscroll altogether.
Fandoms: I'm going to try and stick to TV series that I know quite well so Angel, BtVS, Charmed, Dark Angel, Firefly, Gilmore Girls (Series 1-5 only), Grey's Anatomy, Lost, Point Pleasant, Smallville, Supernatural, Tru Calling, Veronica Mars, Wonderfalls. (I have watched all episodes to date so feel free to use them in your entries, just be sure to stick them in spoiler tags in case others haven't watched them yet!)

Focus on Connor and Angel's relationship. Connor decides to imprison Angel in a box in the sea to punish him for killing Holtz (his other father!!) Episode is tomorrow from season 3.

Category 3 (hopefully)

Buffy and Giles have always had a father figure/daughter relationship and I decided to focus on the issue Buffy has with Giles over his perceived betrayal (helping Wood to kill Spike). Giles knows Buffy's feelings on Spike but sends him away on a mission with Andrew. Buffy feels that Giles had sent the one person who was in her corner. She is starting to feel isolated towards Giles. My god I'm rambling!! But hopefully you know what I meanLOL.

Prodigal
Category 2

I'm focusing on the scene where Angelus kills his father. I picked this scene because Liam has issues with him because of the constant abuse he suffers at the hands of his father who thinks he is a waster and a scoundrel. When Liam becomes Angelus he carries the damage his father caused him and this reflects in the psychological way in which he treats his victims before he kills them, a la Drusilla or in the case of Buffy just psychologically tortures her.

Because every character on Lost as daddy issues, it was the first fandom I thought about. And since I :heart: this show so much, I had to make it my entry. :) It's slightly bigger than 1024x768. Second entry. Claire & HRG from Heroes. Obviously, tons of issues here. One being that she is adopted...two being that he essentially screws with the minds of "heroes" like her. This is a messy relationship but it has its sweetness too. Hopefully the two pics juxtaposed against one another reflect this. :)

When I saw "daddy-issues" I instantly thought Sam/John (SN), I wonder if has anything to do with my recent obsession with the show... It's killer to find text and scenes to work with though, so I picked a scene where they're actually kind of bonding for the first time on the show (in Dead Mans Blood). Okay, so this is a really loose translation of the theme, but basically it's Buffy's feelings of guilt about her father's abandonment. In this scene in 'Nightmares' her worst fear comes true and he tells her that it is her fault. Throughout the series she continues to carry this weight without her father ever actually stepping up and telling her that he loved her and that it wasn't her fault. Basically at every turn he abondons her and neglects her. So that counts...right? ;)

This for the Not My Father category. The idea being that Drusilla thought of Angelus as her father after she was made crazy then sired by him. With her fragile mind I feel that she would've been very affected by him getting a soul and disappearing from her life/family - and being a vamp would've reacted in a violent manner.

Third Entry: The Ice Show

This is from BtVS 3rd season episode "Helpless".

When her father stands her up, Buffy asks Giles to take her to the Ice Show, rather subtly. :) But Giles is rather distracted by the preparations for the Crucimentatum (I don't think I spelled it correctly) and his betrayal. I'm always struck by the juxtaposition of her almost confession of how she perceives him as a father figure and his maybe intentional unawareness of this because of his duties as her watcher.

I think I fancy myself a follower. :lol: Though, natural to any BtVS fan, this was the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this challenge, started it, then scrapped it and never came back. Until now. Although I do love seeing the different takes on this scene between Buffy and Hank. Basically, this is what Buffy has always secretly feared with her parents' break up, that it was because of her, and this episode spoke to that exactly, and while we see small glimpses, we don't really get this clear a picture of her feelings about him again until Season Three.

So this piece is about one of my favorite character(s) on Heroes, of course, and it is one of the niftiest scenes in 1.10, in my opinion: when Jessica/Niki confronts their father, Hal, and the darkest secret of them all comes out: Hal abused Jessica to the point where he killed her and then started abusing Niki, however Jessica took over to protect Niki from the abuse (hence, Niki doesn't remember any of it). This is one serious daddy issue, in my opinion. Niki wouldn't be the person she is today if it weren't for him killing Jessica. I used three different styles in one piece: Chris' (galathea) coloring, Olga's (Zugma) stock usage, and Jenni Lou's text.

PHEW! Done and just in time, too! Great challenge and I wish I had made more entries! And good luck to everyone who's entered! :D

Bre I really loved the composition of your piece, and obviously this was quite a popular interpretation, but I loved your unique mixture of texture and darkness closing in. I'm not overly fond of the colouring you used, I felt it was quite flat, but overall it's a nice piece and you deserved this award, hope you like. :)

Amber, you rocked that colouring, and it looked so awesome, I was having such a tough time deciding between the pieces from now on and really it was a compositional thing that struck me about your piece, it felt very dominant on the left and empty on the right. But oh my god, that colouring is awesome and image choice is perfect.

Heather, you lucky *****, in just before closing and wow is that an amazing piece! I adore the colouring and the composition, image choice, everything works well together here. My only concern was that the bottom left hand corner seemed to be getting duller, and perhaps heightening the contrast on those images, or blending it into a darker section to make the rest stand out would have been great, but overall, my god - I love this piece almost as much as your 'Wrong Sister Died' piece, ;)

Signe... what really caught my attention in this piece was that warmth between Sam and John, but at the same time a huge gap between them, highlighting their relationship completely, coupled with the almost border like effect the characters create and having the words captured between them worked so well. There was just something about this piece that got my heart.


And... had there been a heck of a load of entries I had planned to do placements for each category, but that didn't work out, oh well. But I still loved having these broken down into categories and so when I was judging throughout the course of this challenge I always had a favourite picked for each category and so couldn't take any of these out of '1st place' as time drew nearer and I realised I didn't have the entries. So I decided to keep my first place for each category and do placements after them, so I have 3 first place awards listed below.
