View Full Version : Two Issues I'm Blah About...

Sorry if this is something that can't be changed but I noticed to different things that aren't are too...short compared to Buffyworld and I was hoping that they could be lengthened:

1. Signatures. It says only 4 lines is permitted. Only Buffyworld I know it was longer. At the moment I can only fit 3 and a banner here. On Buffyworld I could fit at least 4 and a banner. Is there a way this could limit could be...made less limiting? I have a site, banner credit, a fanfic, and the occasional random thing like a challenge or battle to link to/put in my siggy. Maybe lengethening the sig line limit to 5?

2. PM length. On Buffyworld I could send a 55+ page word document in 12 point font "Times New Roman" with multiple spaces and whatnot to somebody in one PM. Here, I can only send roughly half of that in one PM. I don't know what the limit was on Buffyworld or what it is here but it is a hassle of sorts to send half of a fanfic to an editor in one PM, wait 60 seconds, and then send the second half (with the possibility of repeating this process again if it's a REALLY long story) just to fill up another members PM box faster. So maybe making increasing the amount of words/characters permitted in a PM?

Sorry if these are...petty issues. But they've been bothing me the past while when trying to do the things I need ( Funny to use that word when it's not really 100% necessary) to do on here. And if they can't be changed, then no biggie. I'll deal like I am now. :) But yeah...I'm done being greedy. :p

I don't think you should feel petty for bringing it up. Although this is a new forum, it came about because of BW and as such, we all had gotten used to the way things worked there.

I, for one, would be fine with adding another line for sigs. As for PMs, I am sure it something Nikki could look into. I just don't think she has been able to tweak every variable to the forum yet...since there are so many things. I know in other threads we are all talking about what is missing or what we miss. Anyway, I just wanted to say that I don't think you should feel petty for bringing it up. :)

Hi Heather :)

Don't worry about things like this. They take me five minutes to change and I don't know to do them until someone brings it up!

So you now get 5 lines of text and a banner and there is no limit on text in private messages :)

Thank you SO much, Nikki! I deeply appreciate it!

And thanks for making me feel better about asking about this, Jenni. I just wasn't sure if it was like...something Nikki set herself for a reason or if it was just a forum default. And I didn't wanna go questioning Nikki's reasons for setting the limit at what it was. Hence the fear of coming across as...petty and stupid.

But, again, MANY thanks!

Another thing I noticed, we can only have 250 characters in our sig. I'm pretty sure we were allowed 300 at BW.

Sorry about the complaining.

Nikki

I increased the characters in signatures to 300 excluding BB Code for non VIPs :)

Nikki, one small thing....I can't live without the "new posts" button, I think it's my favourite function! :D On BW, it showed the new, unread posts, but the most recent ones stuck also after you read them. Here, on the other hand, once you read a new post, it doesn't appear anymore...it's not a big deal, but it was so much more convenient to just click on new posts, and have all the most recent conversations you were taking part in (like the chat thread), instead of going back everytime to the main page... is there a way to change this? If not, I totally understand, and I'll deal! ;) Thanks!

I've been looking for this Francy because I hate that too, and I hate having the 'these threads have been updated but not visited since your last visit' threads, there is a reason I haven't read them and I hate them sticking on that page!!

So I'll let you know when I have some luck with that option :D

Thank you Nikki.

I noticed the new post thing too, I hate the whole these threads have not been updated since your last visit, too. Like Nikki there is a reason I haven't read them.:)

Okay, I think I'm finished complaining.:(

Nikki

Yeah like I said to Francy I've searched and can't find anything about that option. Could just be the way this forum works, but I'll keep looking /sigh

Is anyone else having the same problem when trying to edit their posts that sometimes it says it is saving changes but never does? It makes that swirly thing, says it is saving but nothing happens and in the end I just make changes, cut the words out my post, delete that post and have to paste them in a new post instead. Sometimes it works but very rarley, is the editing doing this to anyone else?

Sassy
26-06-07, 06:30 AM
Not to me, well not that I've noticed. Although sometimes I click the edit button but it doesn't let me change and I have to refresh the page, is that part of your problem?

Mogs, when you get that, just click "Advanced" and your edits will appear in the full editor, then you can submit.

Ehlwyen

It happens to me too. Not very often, but usually at the most annoying of times. If it does, I hit stop and just click the "Go Advanced" button and my changes are still there.

If you are having trouble with the in thread editing interface then I suggest you just hit "Go advanced" immediately when wanting to edit and just skip the in thread editing dialogue.

Thanks everyone, I'll do that in the future :D

Yeah that little editor box that first comes up is only really good if you have made a small post and are editing it. A large post it takes a long time so it's easier just to go quickly to 'go advanced' :)

Yeah, that happened to me several times on one thread--sometimes just deleted the second half of my post--but yeah, doing "go advanced" fixes it...

One thing that bugs me is that when you change your signature, adding new words or a banner, it doesn't show up in any posts you made before the change, which I find a bit strange--the avatar changes alright!

Also, for some reason I can't subscribe to the VIP thread...even after I post there, it doesn't show up in the subscribed threads, even when it's updated--and the old one did....

But if you had something in your signature, changed it then the new stuff does show up in all posts. I've just checked, I only put a banner in my sig this weekend and yet posts I made weeks ago show it.

It's just if you've had nothing in before it won't show that. I mentioned it in the FAQ thread because everyone kept asking!!

Also, for some reason I can't subscribe to the VIP thread...even after I post there, it doesn't show up in the subscribed threads, even when it's updated--and the old one did....

Also if you go to the full 'post reply' option you'll see under the text box a Nofitication Type drop down box, it defaults on 'do not subscribe' but if you change it to 'no email' it will put it in your subscribed threads :)

Thanks Nikki, I look into that--I guess in both cases it's default buttons foiling me, lol! ;)

One other thing, that LRae's new thread just reminded me of--is there any way to make gender appear here along with the other info like post count, location, and rep points, like it did on BW? I like knowing what gender person I'm talking to, esp. for those I don't know well and who are new here....that's probably what bothers me the most!

vampmogs
27-06-07, 04:59 AM
Yeah I agree I didn't realise that till I read that thread but it would be nice to see people's gender if they wish to display it.

I've already gotten Nikki looking into installing the gender hack. :D

It's starting to become more and more necessary as BF is already attracting lots of new non BW members. :3party:

Nikki

Well I put the coding in yesterday, but just the secretive style so I could make sure it works. I can't make it with the gender symbals though as I haven't a clue how Mike did that. But it will just say 'gender: female' which will be ok until Mike has some time to show me! :)

I'll put it on the rest of the styles today.

Ehlwyen

Cool! Thanks Nikki! *thumbsup* I take it something like a smilie code isn't working with the gender symbols?

Okay, I remembered something else....is there any way that the forum could be fixed to be like BW in that when you post again right after a previous post, your second post is automatically meged with the former post? B/c I often like to quote multiple people in my post, and the easiest way to do that is the press "quote" in the other post, then submit reply--but whereas on BW it would then add itself to my previous post, here it just double-posts, and I have to go back to edit my second post, copy the text, delete the post, go back into the previous post and edit it and paste the text there....I guess it's not too much of an issue and I'm just being lazy but...I'm definitely bleh about this issue! :p

This forum actually has a very nifty multi-quote function, whereby you can quote numerous other people without having to edit your previous post (although it isn't actually that hard to do that ;)). Just click the little button alongside the 'quote' button, for each post that you want to quote, and then hit 'reply' at the bottom of the thread. All the posts you marked will appear in your new post box, ready to be quoted :)

That's funny because I was just going to ask Nikki if she had a hack for that, as I thought it would be a good to way to minimize spam posts.

But yes, the multi-quote function is awesome. I seriously recommend giving it a go. ;)

Thanks for explaining that Jo, I've been unable to figure out the multi quote function. Though I haven't had much need for it yet, I'm usually just quoting galathea. :xd

Glad you pointed that out sherrilina! I had not noticed that the merging double post function wasn't active. Though I did notice a lot more double posts happening. :p I think instituting that again would be beneficial.

Just to add...the multiquote button looks slightly different depending on which skin you are using, but it is usually either a little '+' or speech bubble-type thingy. :)

 Thanks for the info, Llywela... I just spent a very large amount of time on a post where I multi-quoted and it took me forever...now I feel like an idiot that I didn't know about the multi-quote button...:redshy: At least now I know how to do it for next time! :D

Yeah, thanks for the tip Llywela, I didn't know how to use the multi-quote either....

I'll definitely try that next time....
