And no, I don't necessarily mean Jonathan. Though it could be him, because the question is...Who's your favourite side character (ie not one of the Scoobies, and discounting Buffy's boyfriends, because people talk far too much about them...maybe I should make a list of who you're not allowed....yup, here's the list...who do you like APART from Buffy Willow Xander Giles Spike Angel Anya Cordy Riley and Dawn. Oh and Tara. Hmm...I think that's my list of no nos!) and why?
Are you partial to Andrew, lord of the geeks? Or maybe Faith, the dark slayer on the rocky road to redemption? Or even Kendra, the slayer who caught a bad break and never got to (one assumes) kiss a boy? Or perhaps you prefer the more recherche and obscure...Whistler, perhaps? Or Rack? Or....I'm having too many ors, YOU pick one :)

We're having Buffy chat. I never do that any more.
You haven't got Oz on your list of not-allowed, therefore my answer becomes a little easier.:p
It's definitely Faith for me! Apart from Spike, she is my favourite character. I'm a sucker for bad girls getting redeemed and Faith fits that character. I love that she has this rough exterior but underneath is pretty screwed up. Although I have to say that I prefer Faith's character on Ats, she seemed to fit much better there than on BTVS and Angel definitely understood her better than anyone on BTVS ever could.

Damn, you know I just forgot him, right? Sneaky! Ok, so, since he slipped through the net like the sly wolf he is....why is he your fave?

That's a good point...some characters are interesting on one show, but amazing on another. Wesley is the same for me...I found him amusing on Buffy, but on Angel, he was oddly even funnier, when they stopped playing him purely for laughs. The ep where he has to impersonate Angel is actually a lot funnier, I think, than him purely being an officious prat on Buffy.
Andrew's still my favourite minor character, because almost everything that comes out of his mouth is hilarious, and I remember it more than a lot of minor characters. For instance, I was watching Gilmore Girls the other day, season 6, and Lorlelai makes Luke drink Zima, and in my head I was going "Can I have a cool refreshing Zima?", with Buffy's response of "No Zima!" I didn't realise Zima was booze when I heard Andrew say it and naughty booze hound Andrew is even better :)
Other than Andrew, I'm fond of Harmony. Again, she brings the funny, and there's something about her that's inexorable...she's got the same quality as Anya (or Paris on GG)...you can hurt her feelings, but she'll always bounce back somehow, water off a duck's back.
Now that I think of it, I admit to being strangely fond of Harmony. I don't quite understand it (and a lot of it that I do understand has to do with her appearances on Angel), but she seems oddly cool. She tries her hardest, and no one ever gives her a break.
LOL @ Wolfie starting Buffy discussions!
(And me actually replying.. that's a while!)
My fav side character has to be... either Oz or Faith. I love them both!
They were both strong characters that had character development, even though they didn't have a big part in the show. We learned quite a lot of both of them. Faith and her struggle through her youth, her dissapointments and how she was looking for a place to belong. It was 'funny' how the affair with Gwendolyn Post got to her. That she trusted her and then she turned out to be evil, how that effected her to push her a bit more to the dark side, I thought that was remarkable.
She was obviously looking for a mother or father figure. Something also shown by her relationship with The Mayor.
Oz was such a sweet, caring character. But also with a very dark side (the wolf...). It was good to see how they brought more levels to him with the wolf, with the relationship with Willow, the caring, the jealousy, how he forgave her. And everything.
Love them! :)

ethan rayne - my favourite little bad, sly, self serving and cowardly servant of chaos. Its always interesting when ethans in town and it seems he could be moving a little more centre stage as we speak.

I really thought that Sunday was very entertaining, and should have been used in more than one episode. Katherine Towne was hilarious in that role.
Since she's allowed, I'll say Jenny, also. That's not all that sophisticated, I just think Robia LaMorte is probably the most beautiful woman in the cast at any point.
Too many to list! Off the top of my head, I would say Faith and Wesley... and Andrew, Harmony, Jonathan, Jenny... like I said, too many.
Like KingofCretins, I also would have loved to see more of Sunday. She probably would have made a far more interesting Big Bad then Adam. And I also agree with what he has to say about Robia - she is stunning! All superficial reasons aside, I would have to say that her death really shocked me more than any other death on Buffy, mostly because as the series progressed, I had gotten used to the fact that no one was safe and could drop dead at any time. Jenny was the first shocker, for me at least. I really loved the whole gypsy connection.

My mind goes to Andrew first, but then I think of some of the others listed here: I wouldn't say Faith, in my heart she's one of the main crew, but for sure people like Wes, Harmony, Anne springs to mind as a bit player who had a sympathetic nature.

I'd say we needed more Trio scenes. I loved those three, what with Warren's psychological problems (or just ruthlessness) combined with Andrew's geekiness and Jonathan's uncertainty about what he wants to do. Plus, Bond discussion > all.
Harmony was also great in s4-5 as the wannabe big bad.

Faith, I love her character so much and wish we had more of her. However, in saying that I can't help but wonder if I love her character so much because I don't have enough of her. I think she could be like Spike, great in small doses but after a while too much screen time kind of just ruins the character.

Wow... So hard to choose! I had decided on Andrew, and then someone said Faith, and then Harmony... OZ! I liked them all. I love characters that go against the "main stream". Someone who is not just the vanilla good guy (not that there's anything wrong with that). They are usually mult-layered and complex, and the chance for any character's redemption is always an attractor for me.
Superstition.

I'm gonna have to make a list.
- Andrew
I just LOVE him, I found him so funny and he just made the scene light up when it was all dark/killing around the scoobies. I loved him. Also with his crush on Spike, it made it even more funnier.
- Oz
- Wesley
- Jonathan
- Harmony, she annoyed me a fair bit but in some scenes, she was great.

As much as I didn't care for the potentials and their overuse, I would have liked more Annabelle and more Chloe. Annabelle was the only one of the first set of potentials that I liked.
I would have loved to see Shannon get more to do between "Dirty Girls" and "Chosen". Something about her encounter with Caleb and the fact that she was up and fighting a week later (in Sunnydale timeline) makes her cool to me.
Mine has got to be Oz. I loved him from the get-go and I loved him even more because of the way he was around Willow (well before the wolf took over, I suppose). I loved how he never really talked a lot but when he did, it was worth listening to....
I also really loved Jenny Calendar and I wish she'd got to stick around for longer but I see how it was important for the other character's development and especially Giles's I guess that Angel killed her.
I liked Harmony too but I can't remember if I liked her on Buffy or if I only started really liking her on Angel. So scratch that
Other than the obvious, like Andrew and Faith, I'd have to say Kennedy is one of my favorite side characters. There's something about her that I really admired, her confidence. She stated her opinion and if other didn't care, she could careless.

It takes a brave man to defend Kennedy :) I thought I'd like her, I liked her in "Bring on the Night" (liked Annabelle more, though). I didn't really detest her until she started acting like she'd been in this thing since the beginning, calling a frightened girl a "maggot" for not picking up martial arts training provided en masse by a non-expert, and climbing all up and down Buffy and *then* Faith because she wasn't automatically getting her way.
Another few appearances by Willie would have been cool. I thought it would have been more fun to see him in "Potential" than Clem. I wouldn't have minded a Whistler appearance in Season 7 to provide some exposition, either.
I've always thought along your whistler lines KOC however I see him more at the end of Angel rather than Buffy.
That said, The idea of Whistler with the whole balance thing is aa very interesting idea but i don't think he is that strong as an actual character.
I would of liked to of seen that invisible girl again just to tie the whole government thing off.
Also I would of loved to have seen dracula get serious and act like a proper threat.

I figure Marcy would be a great character to bring into S8 of Buffy, the reasons for this should be self apparant (So as to avoid any spoilers)
Whistler was actually originally in Angel, at least in the first draft of City Of... though at some point they decided to create a new character, that was pretty much exactly like him and made Doyle. It would have been cool to have seen Whistler again.

How can we all be forgetting about Joyce?! She is the coolest!
I don't think Oz should count because he was technically a Scoobie, but he is one of my all-time favorite characters as well.
I also enjoy Drusilla very much because she's so stylistically crazy.
As far as villians go, I really liked the Mayor (I just think of that checklist he has in one episode with things like PTA meeting juxtaposed with 'become invincible') and I loved his relationship with Faith because he did genuinely care about her and it was kind of sweet in a twisted sort of way.
One of the greatest things about BTVS is that every small character is well thought out and the casting is generally really good, so you end up liking pretty much every character.

I'm going for the really small characters, because characters like Faith get plenty of chat.
I really liked Sunday. After Spike, she was the best vampire ever. They gave her some really witty lines, and I wish she'd stayed around because I think she would have made a really fun nemesis for Buffy :D
I also liked Cassie Newton a lot. I could really relate to the angst ridden poetry! ;) Plus, I thought they played her tragic ending well. I really dug her morbidity.
I have to say, Oz is my favorite. He is usually calm, is one of the few side people that all of the scoobies more or less get along with.
But if Oz doesn't count then Joyce is my favorite. She has to deal wit her daughter being the slayer and then later finds out that her other daughter isn't real.
Drusilla is also great. Her craziness is fun to watch, and beleivible. I love her story arc, finding out about how Angelus messed with her head before turning her.

So many great little guys.
I go for funny so:
Andrew- "that was my brother"
Harmony -vamped Harmony asking Spike if he can do the thinking part while pretending to be smoker-kind of adorable-"she's going to kill me til I'm dead"

Anne is my favorite side character. I love how each time we visit her she's learned something new and after meeting Buffy she makes such positive efforts to change for the better and to help others realize their potential. Of course some of that is on ATS but hey! she started here.
I also adore Jonathan! It was so fun when S2 was airing and we'd wait for him to randomly appear in episodes so we could point him out!
It broke my heart when he fell in with the wrong crowd in S6. Jonathan actually realized how wrong their actions were and tried to stop the villians and help Buffy. Does he get any credit? Nope. And Andrew gets to stab him in the back and be accepted by the Scooby game. Really a burning point for me. :(
Harmony was always fun in a "if i can't have Cordelia" way. Her oblivious naive nature was always a nice contrast to the stereotype usual innocent naive characters. Her reasoning was never a normal person's reasoning. But it was suitably exciting and risky to try and get in her head and figure out Harmony logic.

Definately a draw between Andrew and Harmony.
I loved Andrew so much, but sometimes i thought the writers tried a little too hard to make him a geek. On the other hand, If they hadn't I wouldn't love him so much, but the constant, and I mean CONSTANT references just made him unbelievable to me.
And Harm, she's like the only blonde bimbo girly girl on TV I've ever felt sorry for. She just had so much life, and then it all got squashed by her vampirism, and Spike. She was so unlucky, and just made me so sad. But in a happy way.
