A lot of polls have already been done about Favorite Season and with various results but I wondered something...
A poll was made a few months ago about either you prefer BtVS or AtS and there was almost as much BtVS fans as AtS fans which really surprised me cause I always thought BtVS was more popular and this is actually BuffyForums () so I wondered if that could give a unique direction to the Favorite Season polls. For instance, maybe AtS fans tend to be Bangel shippers so maybe tend to prefer Bangel-centric as Season 2 and 3...or maybe I'm completely wrong about it
But I thought it worthed a shot, so the question is according to your favorite show (BtVS or AtS) what's your favorite Season of Buffy?
Season 5 and I prefer Buffy. Only Angel season I felt measured up to Buffy was Season 5 (would have been Season 2, too, if not for the Pylea arc).
Ats is a better show IMO. No really bad episodes, better choreographed fight scenes. And better season plots.
But I like Btvs more for it's characters. My favorite season overall is season 6. Great Eps Character development. And it has OMWF. What's not to like

Season 2 and I prefer Angel. Although I do prefer Bangel as a relationship to the other(s) Buffy had, I don't think that has much to do with my preference for Ats. I enjoy the characters more, I think the fights are better done, and it has Wolfram and Hart - best baddies in the whole damn 'verse. But if I were to choose a favorite season in all of the Buffyverse, BtvS season 2 would be high on the list, maybe even #1. I love the epic-ness and the gothic atmosphere and yes, the relationship drama (when it wasn't played too cheesy).
I voted wrong *idiot*
I wanted to vote 'season 2 and I prefer Ats', but I did vote 'season 2 and I prefer BtVS'. I agree with everything ShinyFirefly said ...

Season Five was my favorite season and I prefer BtVS. I never really LOVED Angel and didn't actually start watching until Willow appeared in "Orpheus"... I didn't even know the series excisted until Buffy season 7... But I kinda blame Canadian broadcasting for that one, and my lack of going on the internet...
I think Angel is a good show, but I was never in love with the characters. It did feel alot more grown up and I guess some people will like that more, I just felt it was too over the place. I did love the "Darla" arc in season 2 and 3, and the Pylea arc was also pretty coo. Then season 5 hit the airwaves and the show just went to the bottom of my list...
Buffy on the other hand was very consistant and we got some pretty interesting storylines, plus it was alot easier to relate too cause it was alot more human in nature, where Angel felt more like an action show with characters, Buffy was a character show with action.

I prefer BtVS and my favorite season is Season 2. I was never anywhere obsessed with the spinoff the way I was with the original show. I found Angel to be have it's brilliant points, and I thought that the late Season 5 arc leading up to the finale was just fabulous. But for me the series was too depressing too often, e.g. the Angel-Connor-Holtz arc. Still I do understand why some fans prefer Angel.
I will always be impressed with the way that Buffy remade itself from its original setting of Sunnydale High School and teen angst and kept going for seven seasons. The characters couldn't stay in high school forever. But Season 2 remains my favorite, its warts (monster of the week phase and whatever) notwithstanding.

I agree with you, especially about the last part. But I never felt Angel was really more of a grown-up show than Buffy, actually I feel quite the opposite.
Angel has grown-up characters and Buffy has grown-up themes which makes it more "grown-up" to me. Depression, rape, wicked love, sacrifice, lust, suicidal thoughts, you find that on BtVS. And even similar themes are, imo, dealt with more maturity on BtVS than AtS, like dark self for instance. With Angel, it lasts something like 5 episodes and he gets over it by having an epiphany, just poof!! On the other hand, Buffy is feeling that way during an entire Season and get over it progressively. Ships also are more deep and "grown-upy" on BtVS when Angel has Angel/Nina, Fred/Gunn, Cordy/Groo even Fred/Wesley which all feel somehow naive...Exception being Angel/Darla and more importantly Wes/Lilah. Angel gives too much part on demons, visions, magic, prophecies when Buffy gives more space to human interactions.

I've always been torn between seasons 2 and 6 of Buffy. I can never decide which one I prefer more. Season 2 had the introduction of Spike and Dru, it had Angel reverting back to his old self, and it had tons of great episodes (Passions being a fine example of this). On the other hand, though, season 6 was so much darker than the other Buffy seasons, it had Dark Willow, the Trio, Buffy's cute little haircut (I had to throw that into the discussion somewhere, lol) and it also had tons of fantastic episodes (like Once More With Feeling for example).
Out of the two Shows btvs wins hands down, in my opinion.
By the way, I know ats means Angel, but what does the ts part stand for?
AtS = Angel the Series. :)

Aha, I really should have guessed that, shouldn't I? LOL. I kept thinking "It must mean Angel The Slayer" and then thinking "No. That's makes exactly NO sense."

I voted for season three and I prefer Btvs.
I'm always torn between season two and three but three is just too darn perfect I really can barley fault a single thing about it. And I love Ats but I prefer Btvs. I like the characters a little more, like the season forumla a lot more (new big bad every season) and whilst Ats has better stunts ect, Btvs never had such a major goof as ending a brilliant season on something like the Pylean arc...

For me it's season 5 of Buffy no question, for me it was the perfect season. Although I adore Angel Buffy just had the edge for me somehow, although it's funny how these days I end up re-watching far more Angel episodes then I do Buffy ones.

You know I actually do the same thing, but (I dunno about you) for me I have always watched Buffy and have owned the DVDs ever since they came out, so I've rewatched them SO many times and there are actually some episodes of Angel I have only seen once since I only got the DVDs last year.
Oh and season 5 high five!

I found this a hard one to pick. Deciding between Buffy and Angel wasn't a problem cause it's Buffy all the way but which season. IMO all season have something going for them.......well maybe not season 7 but you know what I mean:D. I even love Season 1, yeah some of the episode were a bit awful.....I Robot You Jane....but that's what I love about it.
I'm not saying I don't like AtS cause I do, there are some wonderful episodes in it.....I Will Remember You is one of my fave episodes ever but I find myself having a much more vested interest in the lifes of the characters in Buffy. I love how Buffy was more metaphorical than Angel and how Joss used the battles/traumas Buffy faced to illustrate things many of us face in life. For example sleeping with a guy and him changing into a "monster". For me BtVS had more character growth/progression. I mean we see Willow going from geeky, scared computer nerd to ass kicking lesbian witch bent on destroying the world:D If that's not character progression I don't know what is:)
Anyway I could go on....whaddya mean I have!.... but I'm gonna stick me neck out and say Season 2. Yes it's got some dodgy episodes but Surprise, Innocence, Passion and Becoming more than make up for it. But there again I like Season 3 as well and.......see what I mean, hard:D

Season 5 and I prefer Buffy. Only Angel season I felt measured up to Buffy was Season 5 (would have been Season 2, too, if not for the Pylea arc).
Aww, I LOVE Pylea. Without Pylea, my love of Angel would be greatly reduced. Maybe I'm a sucker for any Wizard of Oz reference, and anything involving Lorne and his love of LA/hatred of home/love of showtunes, but I just love the whole thing. Particularly the tone of voice in which Lorne says..."my MOTHER". But also Angel's geeky excitement about his reflection and upset about his hair.
But I agree with you on season 5 and BtVS. :D I love the way Buffy's character and slayerness are explored that season, and the tensions she feels between her duty as a human being and her duty as a saviour of the world. I love Glory and her minions (though my favourite Big Bad if taken out of context of the season is probably the Mayor, though I do love the nerds and their Dark Willow chaser too, so it's close). I love the way Joyce's death and its aftermath is handled. It's probably my favourite season for Spike's character, too, and I love the beginnings of Willow's dark witchy path.

I loved those elements of the Pylea arc, too, but I just didn't like the all-over-the-place feel of it. Vampmogs once compared it to Xena, and yeah, that seems to capture the crux of the problem for me.

I know what you mean about the Xena-ness... but it feels tongue in cheek enough for that to seem charming rather than shonky when AtS does it. It's like a pantomime or something - the slightly amateurish feel is part of the charm. :)

I have always thought that Season 5 could have been definitely the greatest season of the show - for me anyway - except for one thing. That was the way they introduced Dawn. Yeah, it was all clever and Twilight-Zoney but it prevented me from tying in emotionally with her all throughout the season up to the climax atop Glory's portal tower. I've always thought they could have done it in a way to make her the Key and Buffy's sister and Joyce's daughter and have made everyone bond with her and understand why Buffy had to do what she did.

God yes, anything that had 'Fool for love' in it gets my vote!
As I said I just adored season 5 for all sorts of reasons, but in particular I love how all the characters were handled that year, and how the story arc so cleverly managed to get all of Buffy's 'chess men' lined up and in the right place so that they would be really to fight with her in the final battle.
Every character got a chance to shine that year. Pure class. :D

HA HA i thought the exact same thing(angel the slayer) until i asked Revan awhile ago.. !!! You were not alone in that frame of thinking! LOL!
I voted for season 2 and perfer Buffy. I watched Angel for the first two seasons and it was good in all but i never really connected with ATS like i did with buffy. As a matter of fact i am buying Angel the complete series here soon so that i can give it the chance it deserves.
I went "Season Three, but prefer AtS", which is interestingly odd considering that I think the character of Angel functions the worst in BtVS Season Three. :)

Buffy Season 3 and I prefer BtVS.
Angel is a great show, but not as consistently so as BtVS. It took a lot more risks with the storylines which either paid off or didn't. Some of the storylines on AtS aren't as well developed as those on BtVS either - the Darla/Drusilla/Bad Angel arc could've gone on a lot longer in Season 2 (wasted opportunity), and Angel Season 1 is essentially arc-less, it's just a bunch of mish-mashed monster-of-the-week episodes.
I've seen bits and pieces of each season, so I can't really say which I like the best but I definitely like Buffy better. It was always so cool as a kid in the 90's being able to say you were watching BtVS. I just put season 1 because I'm starting from the beginning again :)

Season five of BTVS was just amazing, because all characters were touched upon, mainly Buffy, Spike and Willow. It also has Dawn that I love, a good plot, excellent episodes and an awesome finale. BTVS just touches me on a way that Angel canīt.
btw, why do people seem to have a grudge with season 1 of Ats? I think the season is just amazing. It does not have an arc, but it has great writing and great character development. I say Iīm in love with season 1 of Ats.

I think it's because nothing really connects, it's just one episode then another then another ect... It just doesn't seem to have any direction. Some people think the same way about s4 of Btvs but I disagree to an extent. Season 4 lacked the direction some other seasons had but it still had a continuos running arc throughout the season whereas Ats s1 suffered greatly because it didn't. You could tune into an episode one week, miss the next two and still be no worse off really. For me, it had a kind of “what’s the point?” feeling to the whole thing.
And really, I didn’t find many of the episodes all that fantastic. A lot of them I found fairly boring, whereas Btvs season 4 had fantastic standalones, probably the best in the series. I personally don’t think Ats found it’s footing really until season three onwards, that’s when it really clicked for me. Season two had some amazing, amazing episodes but it felt odd how they abruptly ended the fantastic Angel/Darla/… Dru subplot.
I also think Btvs s5 is overrated to an extent. It’s a fantastic season but not my favourite. It was the first season that moved away from the tone of the previous four which I enjoyed so much and began the segregation from the characters and Buffy’s mopey stage which she’s never truly come out of, even still in season eight. The overall arc is bloody fantastic, I loved the Glory/Dawn storyline, though I do hate her hobbit’s with leprosy and the knights of Byzantium.. Quite a lot  , and the Buffy/Joyce storyline was marvellous but I still prefer the vibrancy of season three and the gothic atmosphere of season two more. I’m even torn between season five/season four now. Season five has some truly exceptional episodes such as ‘The Gift’ ‘The Body’ ‘Fool For Love’ but at the same time season four has probably more greater episodes ‘The Freshman’ ‘Pangs’ ‘Something Blue’ ‘Hush’ ‘Restless’ ‘This Years Girl’ ‘Who Are You?’ ‘The Initiative’ ‘Wild Things’ it just lacks a tighter focus that season five seemed to have. In all honesty they come out in a wash for me.
Also helps that season three and to an extent season two have my favourite cast ever.. Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, Angel, Faith, Cordy and Oz are all in my top ten fave characters so when you combine them in one season all as regulars it's pretty hard for me not to love the season.
It doesn't help that I'm also pretty picky about colour tones and sets as well. I really liked the gothic atmosphere and look of seasons 1-4 and season 5 departed from that a little. Season 5 has a lot of soft glows and oranges whereas the first four seasons have a more colder blue, grey, black feel. All that stuff comes into my enjoyment of a series really, as does things like how they use the music and the camera ect. The show used to be really fun with all the different scores it used, sometimes multiple scores in the one scene, it was fun and vibrant, the series kind of lost that as it progressed, it became a little more mundane and of the norm.
It's the tones and colours of Ats seasons that actually determine what season I prefer over the other. I like s4 of Ats better because of the Hyperion and the darker gothic colours which season 5 lacked, I associate colours with the feel of the show and Ats s4 felt more like Angel to me than season 5 did. Of course everyone's feel of the show is different :)

But Ats season 1 has amazing development for the characters and we see that Angel Investigations starts acting like a family. But I understand why some people maybe turned off by it. BTVS season 4 is great for the standalones and what they do with the characters.
btw, isnīt this great? Buffy is an 11 year-old show and here we are, still discussing what we love about it. This is really what makes a magical show.
I LOVE angel immensely, but I prefer Buffy. I think the show was at it's best in seasons three, four & five. Those three seasons work so well back to back.
Season three defines the early buffy high school years. Yes, season two is VERY 'buffys high school years' and has a beautiful arc but it suffers from weak standalone episodes like season one. Season three as a whole is near perfect.
Season four defines buffy's college years and works wonderfully as a transitional season between high school and adulthood-which comes into play in season five. Buffy is automatically given a younger sister (much like having a child of her own-especially when joyce dies) and buffy has to grow up. It doesn't hurt that season five is constructed very nicely.
Season six is a nice extension of season fives theme of growing up and really portrays 'life as the big bad' beautifully. So while season six is great overall, it doesn't quite live up to the grandeur of season five (and I feel like it TOTALLY could've if the writers handled it differently. Even though Willow was gonna 'destroy the world' and was causing some serious damage-I found myself more threatened by Drusilla & Spike trying to destroy the world in season two or the mayor in season three. Evil willow's portrayal just wasn't that scary in the end of season six. I think it just comes down to logistics b/c the story was definitely there, it just wasn't executed effectively)
OK so now that I'm done rambling, I kind of can't decide between seasons three, four and five. Season four has such a special place in my heart b/c it was the first I ever saw but it's overall arc clearly is inferior to seasons 3 & 5. I'm just settling on a tie between seasons 3 & 5 as the best seasons of buffy.

I just love Angel too (every season except for S4), but still prefer BtVS.
My favourites of Buffy are 6, 5 and 2 but my all time favourite and the season I've rewatched the most is S6. Really what's there not to love. Darkness, angst, Spuffy, nerd troika, Evil!Willow, OMWF. Perfect season.

Ack. I don't think Angel's show was as strong as was Buffy's. Someone mentioned that they thought Angel was a better show but that Buffy had better characters?
...?
And...huh?
The first two seasons of Angel, which should have been cake for the writers and the audience, were completely drab. Later on they started getting inventive and allowed Angel to have a personality, but 2 seasons is like 50% of the series! And the whole son-from-the-alternate-dimension thing and all that ensued thereafter and previously with Darla and then Cordelia was just...bizarre, but not in a fun way.
I do, absolutely do admit that I did not stick around consistently for the final season after Cordelia became a god (::chuckle::) and that black chick from Serenity was acting all first-evil-y. So maybe in the final frames AtS elevated itself to some mythical standing, but I kind of doubt it.
What I've found in talking to a lot of fans of both Buffy and Angel is that people who were not watching Buffy from the beginning (or at least by the beginning of season 2) but watched Angel from the beginning, sometimes liked Angel better.
This, I think, is like someone liking Marvel's Ultimate Universe rather than the real Universe. I read Ultimate Spider-man because I can't grasp all the mythology behind the current MU Spider-man. On the other hand, I can't stand Ultimate X-men for the exact opposite reason.
If there was a kind of "polls of polls" on this subject, I'd be interested how many people actually watched Buffy from the beginning and picked Angel as the better show. I'd bet that nearly none would.

Well, count me as number 1, I suppose. I did watch Buffy in it's entirety before getting to Angel and I prefer Angel.
About characters: Buffy created a lot of the characters that turned out to be so good on Angel (upon being given actual depth). Angel, Cordelia, and Wesley all served their purpose on Buffy and then went away. On Angel, they were given depth, they were given variety, and best of all: they were given character arcs. Now, Buffy had character arcs, especially for Buffy (the character). However, the later seasons either took the characters to unlikeable places through strange plot twists or kept them around far behind their usage. For me, when a character in Angel stayed around they got more interesting, as opposed to just sort of taking up space. A perfect example of a character not overstaying their purpose: Oz. Loved him, but he eventually had to go someplace radically different or go away entirely. However, after Oz, it seemed like Joss, Co. lost the fire to get rid of characters that they enjoyed.
Xander's character arc was dropped entirely by the wayside because, well, Joss lost interest in him. Willow, the most loveable character on the show, became the most selfish and easy to hate. Giles, though making choices and decisions that I believe most adults would agree with, was cast into a disagreeing light because they wanted conflicted between Buffy and her father figure. Spike was taken to radical places simply for the sole purpose of keeping him around (although I do like where they took him, it's hard not to justify killing him back in like, Season 4). Anya was a breath of fresh air, but like Xander, only had a momentary plot development in Season 6/7. Tara, though I liked her, had virtually no character arc except for losing her stutter and becoming self-confident (which is a fine arc if she were the main character, but as an aside it wasn't all that interesting). Must I go on?
Looking at Angel, we've got vast character arcs. Wesley, Gunn, Angel, Fred, etc. all go through massive character shifts and changes, all of them fun and believable. Now, I'll totally side with you on Cordelia. Crappy arc, ruining of character, etc. etc.
As for the "fun" quota of Angel, it is a different world for sure. I'm personally a big film noir fan, so I enjoyed the dark tones of Seasons 1 & 2. Granted, they couldn't stay there forever and thus the lightening of Angel's personal tone in the following seasons. However, if we're comparing fun here, the two shows cannot be compared. The first four seasons of Buffy are fun. Great fun. Amazing, even. But it's hard for me to find absolutely any fun in the overall progression of Seasons 5-7. Brilliant television (well, some of it), but not all that fun. The fun moments in Buffy's later seasons, in fact, generally only came when the show stepped outside of itself (a la Once More With Feeling, Tabula Rasa, Him, etc.) whereas Angel was capable of combining fun with drama (minus Season Four of Angel, which...bleh).
Oh, and I voted Season 4. I thought season 3 as, like X-files, that's when the show really took off, but I thought Season 4 was a little more refined in production and general filmaking.
Though I agree with you about The X-Files, I've gotta say that as entertaining as Season 4 of Buffy is, it's pretty poor plotwise. Production-wise, yeah, they learned some stuff. Why is Season 4 your favorite, I'm curious?
I'm number two on the list, well not really. I watched BtVS until season 5 before I discovered Angel. The last two seasons I saw next to eachother. But I do like Ats more.
I agree with almost everything bknick said (only I love Ats season 4 a lot), I think that the development of the BtVS characters is serious lacking. The writers destroyed Willow's arc, forgot about Xander's arc, never did anything with Anya and Giles was out of the picture as well. Also they had no idea what they should do with Dawn or Spike at times. And Buffy's arc is not really bad, but it's depressing and I ended up disliking the girl who was once my favourite character.
Ats had it flaws with development, Lorne was forgotten and they made a mess of Cordelia (but if you rewatch it, it's not that bad. At least she never had sex for magic crack.). But in the end, the characters ended up likable and more grown up that how they started the journey.
Another big point was for me the relations. The scoobies were all about romantic relations. All the scoobies were dating all the time, their spouse was part of the gang and the most drama came from the romantic relations. Ats was different, there were relations but Angel only had 1 girlfriend in those 5 seasons ... in the last 3 episodes. Cordelia was only dating Groo and Gunn only dated Fred. Connor was alone (besides the icky relation with Jasmine!Cordy) and Lorne never touched another person in the whole series. Funny enough, it were the two geeks that were the serial daters. I liked it better this way, team Angel was together because they were friends not because they were lovers. It felt less soapy.
And Ats was way more consistant. If I rewatch Buffy there are many episodes I skip while Angel has only 4 or 5 of those episodes.

I voted season 6 I liked them both but Buffy was better.
It was hard though I liked six because of the "life is the big bad" idea. Also The trilogy of Villains, two to go, and Grave were some of the best story telling in history.
Willow doesn't live here anymore!
