Season 4, it had almost no bad episodes, good acting, it's probably the only season that really makes you think about it, Jasmine was an amazing bad good person, the pace, the fantastic episodes and bad guys, great moments etc. My favourite episodes; Orpheus, Soulless, The Magic Bullet and Deep Down. But I love much more ... the whole Faith arc, I think that Home has some beautiful moments, HC and AN ...

Season 2 is close behind, I love Darla ... dark Angel and Dru. But there are some terrible episodes and the last arc is funny but incredibly out of place.

Season 3 is great because of Wesley and Holtz. I love the dark moments, but there are too much light moments that rub me the wrong way. Angel and Cordelia are both painfully OOC, Angel as dad is cute but not very interesting (at least, he wasn't when Connor was a baby) and Gunn and Fred have the same problem.

Season 5 has such an awful start and it lost the Ats vibe. Lorne, Gunn, Wesley and Fred had much less to do. I missed Cordelia, Spike and Harmony were poor replacements for Queen C and Angel was unlikable a lot of the time. That doesn't take away that there were amazing episodes and the last run of episodes were great.

Season 1 is my least favourite one, it had some great episodes ... but the show was still searching and it felt like a big mess.

If I can put Atf somewhere, I would put it between season 2 and 3. It's not a real season and the FN series were not great ... but the characters are IC, the story is great ... just like the pacing.

Season 4 is great as well, don't get me wrong. I love Orpheus, and The Magic Bullet, but I think season 5 has more great episodes.... no offense to any s4 lovers. :)

That's still very hard to choose for me.
Season 4 has 16 awesome episodes and 6 awful episodes. Season 5 has a lot of bad episodes but my three all-time favorites (A Hole In The World, Shells and You're Welcome...)

I'm gonna choose Season 4 because the arc is totally awesome, Cordy rocks and because from Apocalypse Nowish to Inside Out, I love every single minute on screen.
My favorite episodes are: Awekening, Soulless and Salvage.
My least favorite is also the worst Season Finale of the Buffyverse: Home.

I had to go with season 5, yes there were some less than desirable episodes but I honestly was so happy that Connor was either out of the picture and then when back he was so much better to watch that it made a huge difference for me as a fan.

Then there was Cordy's departure, I know I am in the minority here but I did not miss her, not because I did not like her, but because I had been upset with the direction that had taken her character for a long time. I didn't mind her as a big bad but I was very against Cangel and was worried on how that would be if she had come back for good and as her true self. Then again I am not sure what her official true self was with the writers anymore, I didn't like the saintly Cordelia and prefered probably early saeson 2 Cordelia the best. We could see growth but she still had all the traits that made her Cordelia and sadly they in my opinion dropped the ball when they decided to continue to grow her character. And again I know I am biased in my view but I was so uncomfortable with a romance between her and Angel. I felt like I was watching a brother and sister fall for each other and all I can say is yuck. So having that uncomfortable feeling lifted in the last season was great for me.

Spike's arrival. Okay again I know a lot of people weren't thrilled with Spike for many reasons. Some felt he was out of character, otehrs felt he and Angel became too childish in each other's presence etc. I personally did not see either and I haved talked about why on other threads (though I comepletely understand were fans are coming from on the other side). I personally love Spike and Angel's dynamic and was thrilled to see my two favorite vamps side by side and see Spike away from Buffy.

I also found Angel having to find his way again while working for W&H a great storyline and I found the fact that in the end he had lost almost everyone and ended fighting just felt so true to what Angel and his series was all about.

So those are many of the reasons Season 5 is my favorite.

I'm going to say Season 2, right now. I love the Darla stuff. Darla, The Trial, and Reunion are three of my favorite episodes from that season. Season 4 is a close second, and may be pushed up to my favorite after I rewatch it. The Faith arc and Spin the Bottle are my favorite from that season.

The first 2. When they were starting out. No Cordelia and Connor silliness, no Angel looking a lot less cool, no owning a huge corporation which in my opinion ruined a lot of things, etc. I still like the later ones, mind. Just a lot, lot less than the earlier ones.

I voted for season 2.

Season 4.

Very, very closely followed by season 3. Season 4 had such a fantastic and well-constructed story-arc, possibly the best of any season in the Whedonverse. It was so complex and multi-layered. I hated Charisma Carpenter trying to act evil though, she really didn't pull it off (aside from the final scene of S4's best ep, Calvary - shocking!). Aside from that the season was the closest to perfection AtS ever got in terms of overall season stories/episode quality.

It's really close between S4 and S3 though.

My order would be:

Season 4
Season 3
Season 5
Season 2
Season 1

My Fav would be S5, just ahead of s4 because the ending let the season down.

Then 4, 2, 3, 1

But I like them all more than most of Buffy. And they are pretty close together.

My fav eps in s5 in order are Not Fade away, Time Bomb, Smile Time

Mine is definitely Season 1 - it's the classic! You have Cordy as an actual character rather than a copy of Buffy, there is Doyle. And the standalones are fantastic :)

Mine would have to season 3 mostly because of Wesley and how much his character changes.

Season 4 was my least favourite because I hated the whole Jasmine arc. But on the whole it was saved by the return of Faith and Angelus.

Season 5 is my second favourite because Spike returns!

I actually really liked the Jasmine arc. There's never been such a "grey-area" villain. It would've been a challenge for the writers and it definitely paid off. I didn't like the final five episodes much on first viewing, but on repeats they started to make a lot more sense and I started to see the whole point in Jasmine.

SEASON 5!! Spike Time!!

My favorite episode is Destiny - Spike wins!! (for once...:D)

I also liked Girl in Question, Why We Fight, Smile Time, and Hole in the World.

Most of the episodes in S5 were really great - which is another reason it's my favoirte season.

I also liked Season 1, 2 and 3.

Season 4 is my least favorite.

I think it's between season 1 and season 3.
Season one is have some really good episodes, and you can watch them over and over again. Doyle and Cordelia is funny together and they learn to trust each other throughout the series. But wes is to geeky for my taste, but he gets better in the end.
Favourtie episodes is city of, room with a view, sanctuary and to sanshu in LA.
My worst episode is probably hero.
Season 3 got some good Cangel moments and good twists. I love the love triangle between Wes/fred/gunn.
Favourite episode must be waiting in the wings.

Hero was one of the best episodes of season one. Doyle's death was dealt with well and I loved the Nazi-like demons.

The worst episode of season 1 is easily She - in fact, it's the worst episode of any of Joss' shows (AtS, BtVS or Firefly).

nah, no episode of ats (including she and i fall to pieces) even comes CLOSE to beer bad, where the wild things are, go fish, i, robot... you, jane and buffy vs. dracula. i also hate the body. ats was waaaay more consistent and of generally higher quality than btvs.

and firefly seriously drags in the middle. i think firefly suffered season 1-itis much worse than ats. it had about the usual amount of memorable moments for half of a joss season 1; nothing more. imo, firefly didn't quite gel until the movie. that's when it really found the story arc the series should have gotten to.

ats--i usually have trouble between seasons 3 and 4. i've voted for both in different polls (season 3 this time). i HATE cangel and matronly saint cordy (give me bitch-cordy and evil-cordy/jasmine any day--the best parts of season 3 are when cordy is taken out of the limelight by darla or on vacation--which removes the dork-angel element and let the writers go full-on angst mode), but the angel/holtz/darla/wesley/connor arc is likely my favorite part of ats. on the other hand, season 4 had the most consistent high quality and the best serialized arc feel.

though i suppose consistency-wise, this probably the right order:
1) season 4
2) season 3
3) season 5
4) season 2
5) season 1

I really think Doyles death was wrong. Everything about that episode was wrong!
I had picturing him and cordelia kissing in the rain before he ran to meet his destiny. Instead their on this boat and he is burning to death. It's just a bad ending for doyle.

whats with me and season 1 ? Buffy and Angel both.

season one is amazing . i just finished watching it for the 20th time . and i fell in love with cordelia. youd think it wouldnt take me that long . i love everything about her in season 1 . of course shes also amazing in all the other seasons. except the jasmine ones . im not a fan of that little era.
SEASON 1!!!!! wooot wooott

but yes, season 5 has some of my favorite episodes of all angel

I said Season 2. I love the Darla action, and her interaction with Dru was really interesting as well. I love the Dark!Angel bit even more than Angelus, because morally gray is always better than morally black (or white, for that matter.) My favorite episodes... eh, I donno. The Trial, Darla, and Are You Now or Have You Ever Been.

Next is either Season four or Season five, I can't decide until after I rewatch them. I know it used to be season four (used to be my favorite) but no amount of moral gray is going to make me love Jasmine. I also can't stand Jasmine!Cordy, or Connor/Cordy, or really anything to do with Cordy in that season. So its probably five next, then four, but I'm not sure.

Then comes 1. I like the stand alones. I like the introduction, and I love Doyle. Cordy is really fun, and Wesley offsets the darkness of the scripts. The inclusion of Lindsey is nice, too, though that gets even better in subsequent seasons.

Last is Season three. I don't love Holtz and I hate Connor, plus the Cangel stuff really doesn't sit right with me. I do love Wesley's arc, and the Wes/Fred/Gunn triangle, but Angel and Cordy were weak, and Fred was much better in Seasons 4 and 5. I did like the whole idea of self-fulfilling prophecies and "false" prophecies, though, and I can't exactly say that Season 3 ever really rubbed me the wrong way, like, say Cordy/Connor did. In the end, all of them are close and all of them are absolutely the best thing on TV (except maybe Buffy, which I sometimes like more, sometimes less).

I chose Season 2. I love the internal struggles. Darla against her past nature with her new humanity. Angel and his struggle for redemption with his compassion for humanity. The gang and their role as supporting staff to the entire team. As well as having to realize they can't save everyone and Angel had to make his own choices in life...err..afterlife.

This season includes two of my favorite episodes: Guise will be Guise and Disharmony. I also love the Pylean arc and getting Angel out into the sun.

But most of all, I love that there are still only a few core characters and therefore the show is more focused on their personal journey's rather than just plotlines.

Oh, I adore Wes and Gunn's unlikely friendship.

I went with Season 3 because I love the episodes when Angel is a dad, it is really funny and sad. I also love Groo in this season, when Angel is all jealous of him. The finale was also the most shocking to me, because Angel is thrown into the sea and Cordelia is taken away, I have never been so desperate to see what happens next. Ny second fave would have to be Season 5, it probably had a couple of the worst ATS episodes but the good ones were amazing. I find it weird though how so many of us rate Season 5 up there as one of the best and yet the show got cancelled after this season.

No offense to anyone, but I cannot fathom how Season Four of Angel has the second highest number of votes...most of that season (with the exception of a few standouts that were beyond brilliant) just makes me cringe.

Evil Cordy + Connor on screen + Almost incest + Bizarre Jasmine + oh yeah, evil Cordy = blague.

I just didn't get it. Worst season of any Buffyverse show (minus maybe Buffy S6). But, hmm, to each his own.

I still say season 2. Darla, Dru, W&H, Angel going dark and amazing episodes and storytelling. "Darla", "Are you now or have you ever been", "Reprise" and many others.
Next:

season 4
season 3

I agree, it is definately my least favourite season, I hated how Cordy and Connor ended up together and I found evil Cordy cringey. I also agree about Jasmine, I don't really see anyone as the big bad this season because she wasn't really evil and yet she looked like a demon, this I found confusing.

I, too, chose season 4. I absolutely loved the Beast story arc. There were some iffy moments but overall, it was the only real complete season that holds together as a single entity. I can't even imagine how awesome it would have been if they could have gone with their original plans that they had to change last minute when Charisma Carpetner got pregnant.

I think both Season 4 of Angel and Season 6 of Buffy are more controversial than they are "bad" or "unpopular", so they get good ranks in most polls. It's just that you either love 'em or hate 'em. (I love them, and so does Joss.)

I agree. S6 of Buffy and S4 of Angel are in that "love it or hate it" area. People may not like it, but they are sure the most talked about! S4 of Angel is in the bottom two, along with S3 but I´m sure repeated viewings will make me have a better look at the season.

My Favourite season overall is Season 4. I just love its darkness and how on track it was with the season arch. I will admit I wasn't a fan of the Jasmine episodes (seems odd considering the whole season was gearing up to her arrival, I know) but it is my Favourite season.

My top 3 from this season are : Spin The Bottle, Salvage and Release.

The worst episode for me was Shiny Happy People ... I find it slightly irrating at the begining, though when Fred discovers the truth, it gets good.

Even better than Shiny Happy People, is Magic Bullet. But it´s creepy. All those people acting crazy, like they had no free will at all. I mean, I want world peace and all, but I want my free will. And in MB (Magic Bullet), Amy Acker is just great!

A lot of flaws people have with season 4 - Evil Cordy, Cordy/Connor etc. - can be overlooked because it's all part of the story-arc. It makes total sense that these things happen. That said, I can understand people not liking the destruction of Cordy's character - she's not the same this year, she's more of a plot device than the Cordy we know and love. Luckily for me, I found it a great plot for her to be a part of.

Season four. I loved the Faith episodes, definitely some of the best episodes I've ever seen in Buffy or Angel. I also liked Shiny Happy People and The Magic Bullet. I loved how Fred was so alone, it really showed a heroic side to her.

Season two would be my next favourite, the Darla stuff was amazing, and when Drusilla entered, too, it just got better.

My least favourite would be Season Five, the lack of Cordelia just really didn't please me, and although I love Harmony, she just wasn't Cordelia.

The only problem I have with season five is its first half. I think it may be the worst first half of episodes I´ve seen in the Jossverse. Some of them are really boring and slow, mainly "Just Rewards".

Nina
25-09-08, 01:38 PM
I agree, the first half is terrible. The episodes are weak and it lost the touch with the old seasons. The cast is new (lots of Spike, Harmony, Eve and almost no Lorne, Wesley and Gunn), the lack of conversations about Cordelia and why Angel took over W&H and way too much 'Angel is in a bad place' talk ... we get it, Angel is alone, depressed and locked up in an evil building while Spike kicks his ass, Buffy doesn't trust him anymore and when he is sick nobody visits him etc.

The second half works so well because they finally deal with the trouble, they get out of W&H, more time for the riginal characters and Angel tries to return to who he was before W&H.

I wish that they dealed with some issues before the second half. Why couldn't Wesley find out earlier about the mind-wipe or why didn't they spend more time on Gunn and his curruption. The last episodes (except TGIQ, which is evil) were too full with; Connor, Illyria & old ones, crazy Wesley, Broody Gunn, The Black Thorn, Angel and his plan ... there was more time for this all, more time to work towards the NFA plan.

and *yay* season 4 has the most votes.

My favourite season is the 3rd !

holtz is a fabulous character et the story with connor is amazing !
I love this season even if Cordelia is a little less interessant than before.

the fight betwen angel and holtz and their past is the best I have ever seen !

Season 2 is my second favorite season with Darla and Lindsey. fabulous things like dark angel, the return of Dru and the friendship between Wesley and Gunn !
BUt I 'm not fan of Pylea.

Season 4 was good but some things were not like the end with Jasmine !
The great Apocalypse with the Beast, Angelus could be better at the end.
If Charisma Carpenter wasn't pregnant, was this season better ? I think.

Season 1 was good and I like watch these episodes, no big storyline but lot a good things like with Doyle, like the return of Faith ( amazing fight !!) and the end of the season of course !

Season 5 was great, even if it starded slowly !
could be better if they could make the story that they wanted to do since the end of season 4. a lot of good episodes but we can see that there wasn't a big budget this season !
The end with Illyria, and the black thorn is really amazing !

I'd say season five at the moment. I didn't care for Gunn or Fred at that point so when they both change considerably (Fred become an entirely different person) I was VERY happy.

Plus it's great to have Angel and Spike fighting like brothers.

Season 5 was good but I feel it's a little overpraised. I wish it had continued in more of the story-arc style S4 had rather than being mostly standalone episodes. These were the most boring ones - episodes like Numero Cinco, Unleashed, Just Rewards, Soul Purpose, Why We Fight, there were a lot of below-the-radar episodes that year.

Season 5 isn't my favourite season but I don't think the first half is really all that bad in my opinion. I'm no fan of Mexican wrestlers and 'Lineage' wasn't the best episode in the Jossverse by any means but it was hardly the worst. I seem to be in the minority that actually really enjoys 'Conviction' and 'Destiny' 'Hellbound' 'Life of the Party' 'Soul Purpose' 'Damage' all really good episodes in my honest opinion.

For me;

In the first part of the season, the only good episodes were Destiny, Damage, Soul Purpose & Lineage. The others were enjoyable (Harm's Way, Life of a Party) or just bad/boring.

Nothing happened, only Angel felt sad and found out that he was in a bad place ... something he already knew in 'Home'.

29-09-08, 10:48 AM
Like a lot of people I'm torn between 4 and 5 but in the end I voted for 4 because it is faultless and as much as I like Spike and all the other great moments of S5 it just has two many holes. The thing that I've always loved about Angel and Buffy is that everything seems natural and that while skipping a season may result in serious confusion if watched in order nothing seems out of place. I mean I've never felt that anything seemed out of place and that includes.

- A vampire pregnancy
- The sudden appearance of the protagonists sibling
- Former high school bitchy queen becoming a saint
- Said new found saint making love with protagonists son

Do I need to go on. But never did I feel lost. It always seemed right but at the start of Season Five for the first time in a Joss Whedon show I felt slightly alienated. It just didn't seem natural not because of Wolfram & Hart but because of the complete mood change following the dark epic that was season 4. Season 7 of Buffy managed to not be too dark but still dealt with the consequences of Season 6. Halfway through the Season every episode became gold and some of the best episodes in the Buffyverse were born but it doesn't take away the bad feeling at the start of the season.

buffyholic
29-09-08, 01:04 PM
You have a point. In fact, Conviction felt a little weird for me, because it seemed the characters were regressing a little. Fred was back to being shy and awkard. It took a while until they were back on track but I also feel that there wasn´t enough follow-through from S4.

Dark Ages
29-09-08, 10:56 PM
For me it was between season 1 & 5. I chose season 5. I think it was a good closing for the show and it was done very well. It sucks that all the hang died, but I found that more realistic. I feel at the end of Buffy more people should've died. :( So I think the end of Angel was more rough and I liked it. I have to say season 5 was my favorite season.

urbanlegend23
27-10-08, 03:23 AM
One of the most annoying aspects of Season 5 is that the continuity wasn't great between episodes. WTF were they thinking having an episode like Why We Fight coming after You're Welcome? Cordelia DIES and nobody in the gang expresses a single emotion about it? They had a couple of good moments talking about her in A Hole In the World/Shells, but it simply wasn't enough. They were too keen to move onto the next gimmick episode.

There's also pretty much no follow-up to Wesley killing his own father after Lineage (or a bot, whatever, it'd still haunt you). Themes don't really cross over episodes like they did in the fourth season. I guess a lot of people like the standalone style, but me personally appreciated the more epic approach season four took. It's basically one 22-hour episode, but not one theme of the season is left unresolved or unexplored.

Nina
27-10-08, 11:47 AM
That was my problem as well, Brian Lynch tried to explain the Cordelia thing with making it canon that Angel refuses to say her name because it hurts him too much. But in the end it's all damage control.

The season didn't flow, I think that Joss makes the same mistake in BtVS season 8 ... jumping around from story to story, from character to character. But never all the characters in one big story.

I have really hard understanding how season 4 and 5 have the most vote. Season 5 has some really great episodes (youre welcome, not fade away, powerplay). But it also have probbably the worst episodes ever (Soul purpuse, the girl in question and numero cinko who was so bad that i actually had to switch channel)

And I can't deside what's worst, evil Cordy or no Cordy.

Season 5 is definately my favorite, but I'm still not sold on the idea the season 4 is really actually great. Sure, Season 5 had some really bad stand-alones (Numero Cinco & Why We Fight, being my least favorites), but I think it had such a different atomsphere and really some of the best episodes as well. I liked that it changed places. If things had stayed in the Hyperion another season, it would've become stale. They would've been fighting different demons, battles against Wolfram & Hart, and Connor would've have continued the destructive path, which frankly after season 4 became stale. My particular favorite episodes are You're Welcome, A Hole in the World, Smile Time, & Time Bomb.

Season 4 I believe flows well, but is really poorly plotted. I mean, seriously, Evil Cordy? C'mon. Connor & Cordy? That's kind of creepy. I did like the Faith/Angelus mini-arch within the season because that was awesome to see Faith once again & bring Angelus forth again and see how he reacts to a completely different slayer. Supersymmetry & The Magic Bullet were great as well because it really showed character progression for Fred. But they kind of ruined Cordelia in the season. And they made Connor a faithful puppy to any powerful woman. If Connor had believed anything on his own, I might have liked him.

Season 4 is poorly plotted, true but what gets me is the epic feel of the season, how everything seemed so dire and we had a sense of death in every episode.

I still say season 2 is my number one. We have the Darla arc, we have Drusilla, we have the "Angel going bad with a soul" angle and amazing episodes, breathtaking episodes like Reprise, Epiphany, Untouched, Reunion, etc.

I can forgive season 4 for being poorly plotted because they had to change a lot when Charisma told them that she was pregnant. But I never felt that it was really poorly plotted, maybe because I saw it together with the mess that was season 7?

I kind of agree, though I feel they were both poorly plotted. The only difference is amount of action:

-Buffy S7 was poorly plotted and they were spinning the wheels. The entire season could have taken place in 10 episodes or so, but they chose to draw it out eternally.
-Angel S4 was poorly plotted and they had tons of stuff going on. They did, however, get back on track once Jasmine came into play (but that doesn't mean I enjoyed the Jasmine arc).

I thought Angel Season 4 was the best-plotted season in the Buffyverse. Everything comes full circle and literally something important happens in every episode that counts in the overall story.

This is even more apparent when rewatching episodes. I just watched Calvary (possibly my favourite episode of AtS) and all of Cordelia's mannerisms are really subtly evil in that episode. She's just playing the gang so well at that point. It sucks that Evil!Cordy after that episode was cheesy and over-the-top. She makes all these OTT facials and says cheesy evil dialogue in all of the following episodes - I prefer the far-more subtle approach they'd taken up until then. You can practically hear Jasmine in there in Calvary, really clever.

Buffy's seventh season, I will agree, had some serious plotting problems. However I liked it more than most fans.

Season 5, followed by season 3 and the first part of season 4
