What was the creepiest episode in your opinion. Some episodes could give x-files a run for its money
For me is was Hush. The idea in not being able to speak gives me the willies and the 'gentlemen' as just down right freaky. The bit where one of them hands the other the scalple sticks in my head...always smiling......shudder

Hush, i agree with.
But i always find the opening scene to The Puppet Show, really creepy. Maybe it's because I was so young when i first watched it. The distorted music and visuals, and the creepy voice, gets me.
I think real creepiness comes from moments when someones walking down a dark street, and you know something bad's gonna jump out... you know the cheesy terror mostly.

hehe.

I think the nature, the look, and the circumstance of the demon in Same Time, Same Place is the creepiest in the series. Hush is up there, too.

I'll go with Hush ... those gentlemen freak me out. But also Passion is for me high on the list, with Angelus hunting, the voice over and the artistic way of killing. You could feel that one of the scoobies would die that episode.

Oh yeah! Passion is reaaally scary. I don't know why i forgot about it... probably because of it's scariness, heh.
Thats one of the reasons why i rarely watch Passion. It's a bit untouchable in my eyes, in terms of it's drama as well as it scariness.

Hard for me to choose between Hush and Same Time, Same Place - for the reasons everyone else has given.

Hush is just so generally creepy - the *silence* of the ep puts it right over the top! And The Gentlemen are *so* creepy.

But, STSP is an AH masterpiece and one of my favs, the *helplessness* on Willow's face and the *slicing*.........ew.......very, very creepy. :err:

I find that like most of you, Hush is the episode that's really creepy.
It's not just the silence, but the musical score makes it so dramatic and the way The Gentlemen float about and have the fixed smiles makes them dead creepy and then those horrible guys that run along with them are just freaky.
The best bit of this for me is at Giles' house and Olivia is watching from the window and see's them near by and as she's watching one at the house nearby, one floats by right in front of the window. One of the real jumpy moments.

I'm a huge horror fan and therefore am very desensatised to it, so I don't find a lot of episodes actually creepy, but Hush is like a mini horror film and better than a lot of horrors I've seen.

Hush is definitely tops but I myself was extremely creeped out by Killed by Death. I personally found the villain creepy and the fact children saw him right before they died was heartbreaking and I just felt the terror right with them. And that being so defenseless because you are so weak from sickness, so you can't escape, can't fight back. *shudders*

Oh gosh, i completely forgot about Killed By Death... veerryy scary, for the same reasons listed above. And the demon was just really terrifying visually.
I think i mentally block out scary episodes...

Fear, Itself is definitely up there for me. I had a recurring nightmare as a child that I was in a house but every time I opened a door it led somewhere different and I couldn't get out, so probably that one is just scary for me!

Yeah, Hush has been mentioned, but is definitely a creepy episode. But I can't believe no one has mentioned CWDP. I mean, seeing Joyce on the couch and everything creeped me out the first time I saw it....

passion
killed by death
hush
villains
same time, same place
conversations with dead people
billy
calvary
inside out

i would say der kindestod tops my list of truly creepy demon makeup/creepy music sound effects. can we say 'eye suckers'?

passion, billy, calvary and inside out all have either creepy stalker/chase scenes or the robert j. kral creepy piano music (still want that released) killing of the virgin/darla imager.

villains has skinless warren flaying.

creepiest part of conversations, imo, is the mariachi music.

i'd say the creepiest demon awards go to der kindestod and the gentlemen.

I have to say it's Hush for me. Those "gentleman" were creepy and the music too!! I was holding my breath the entire episode, it was scary.

And I agree with LRae12 here CWDP was scary for me too.

Yeah I thought 'CWDP' was very freaky too. I like that they didn't make a big effort of showing Joyce's body and just had it in the background for all those who did catch it. I also liked the "mother's milk is red today" line, that was very creepy.

I enjoyed 'Fear Itself' a lot as well, it was quite a good episode. Even if the Parker moping was already getting on my nerves :err: Seriously, it makes sense Buffy would be upset, and I know she was only dealing with it for like, what, two episodes? But it felt like an eternity for some reason.

I really enjoyed the scene where Willow does her spell and the light begins to multiply and attack her, it was quite scary actually and kinda of showed the dangers in magic. I think it was brilliantly shot and acted, I especially enjoyed the effects of the balls of light going into her mouth as she screamed for help.

I also really enjoyed the flashes of light as everyone is being traumatised up in the party area, and the girl's face changing subtlety into a smile in between the flashes of light.

In fact, it was quite a well directed episode, loved Oz sitting in the bathtub and Buffy lying on the ground as the frat guy with the broken neck commented on her being alone.

Quite a good ep all round :D

Hush. That ep is super creepy, especially the scene where Olivia is looking at the window and one of the Gentlemen appear. That scares me everytime.
Same Time, Same Place is also creepy because of the demon when he is eating Willow´s flesh and she is laying there awake but paralised. It´s a sense of impotence and helplessness.

i debated this for a while. and i was originally going to go with hush... but i keep coming back to conversations with dead people... omg, seeing joyce like that... the creepy lines (mother's milk is red today)... the mariachi music... not only that, but the first disguised as cassie, when it tried to talk willow into killing herself. i remember the first time i watched that, you were so into it and i really thought willow was getting some message from tara... then it just changed. i think its far creepier than hush.

so convos with dead people for me, but since it isn't up there, hush

I picked Hush because the silence is so effective, but STSP was a close second. It's really creepy to see Willow in peril like that right after being the Big Bad. It's kind of like watching Buffy in Helpless.

Hush - I find the whole situation horrifying. First, you lose your voice, which is happening across the entire town. So, it's pretty much silence. Then, these creepy demons are floating around, cutting out people's hearts. That's not even the worst part, you're pretty much helpless, you can't scream for help.

Hush was (still is) the creepiest for me. I was pretty young when Buffy was on TV and that episode kept my night light on for a while.
I still jump when I watch the scene when Olivia is looking out the window and a Gentleman glides by. Ek!

Normal Again creeps me out the most. I have always had a fear of mental hospitals, ever since I saw one flew over the cokoo's nest early in high school. The idea that the last five or six years were all delusions is extremely creepy, as is what she was told she had to do to rid herself of the delusions, killing her friends. The fact that, for a while at least, she felt she would rather be with her parents in an asylum than in sunnydale with her friends is very sad and very creepy. To believe that you are without sanity is so scary because no one has any reason to believe anything you say, not even yourself. It is the worst sort of isolation.

PASSIONS!.. man that one always broke my heart.. When giles went upstairs expecting to get jenny, and she was dead. And of course angel being evil.. that ep alway bothered me to know end.

"Hush", and "Same Time, Same Place" always creep me out. I hate the flesh eating demon cuz it's so gross the way he eats people's skin. And after I watched "Hush" for the first time, I had to check that I still had my voice before I went to sleep xD "Conversations With Dead People" also freaked me out a bit, I hate the whole 'Mother's Milk Is Red Today' thing. Creepy.

i think in some was the scariest episode for me was Villains because it was like everything we knew and loved in the buffyverse was suddenly in jepordy and with it ending like that - it seemed we'd lost Willow forever. Plus willow turning all black eyed and evil was just unbelievably scary, especially her deep evil voice.

I just rewatched Fear Itself yesterday. Man, that was pretty scary. My sound system was loud, so I got a little scared.

Yeah, Fear, Itself is right up there as well. I always get freaked out when that thing with the bleeding eye sockets says "I can see you!" to Xander. OMG, when I showed that to my cousin, it was storming outside, and she screamed and was like "I don't want to watch this anymore!" Haha.

Hmmm, I must be weird. :)
There is exactly one Buffy episode I find creepy, and it isn't on the list. It's "Helpless". I find Kralik way creepier than any of the season Big Bads, and I can't think of any location at the moment that is as creepy as the boarded-up house. But the real creep factor are Buffy's eponymous helplessness and Giles (apparent) evil agenda. Brrr.

My classifications for those episodes on the list would be

"Hush", "Fear Itself" - funny
"Same Time, Same Place", "Killed by Death" - *shrug*
"Passions", "Normal Again" - exciting
"The Body" - sad

I would have to say 'Killed By Death' that demon was soo creepy and scary. I remember when I first saw that episode. I just bought season two and I never saw three episodes from that season. And 'Killed by Death' was one of the episode. So I decided to watch the episode. ALONE! AT NIGHT, HALF A SLEEP! Oh god, that scene where he floats by Buffy's room I freaked! I have to say that that was one of the scariest episode for me.

For me it would have to be Hush. The Gentlemen were creepy and the music that went with it just made the episode.

Matt
27-07-08, 05:56 PM
I had to go with Hush, the idea of having your voice taken away is one thing, but the thought of not being able to scream while you were having your heart cut out is something else entirely. I think the score adds to the creepfactor, but I think it's mainly the context of the Gentleman, how they operate and how they look, the silver teeth in that permanent grin, the suits that look like they've been pressed a bit too much, their grey skin, their extremely long fingers and their bald heads. They're gnarly and creepy. They also have quite freaky henchmen too.

I don't really find The Body or Normal Again that creepy, I think The Body is incredibly realistic with the lack of music, but there wasn't anything suspenseful that added creepiness, the same with Normal Again, the idea that Buffy could actually be in a mental institute and Sunnydale being a figment is quite real too, in a way. Fear, Itself is always funny to me, but that could just be me, there's nothing really creepy about it either, in my opinion.

The episode I would've said was creepiest after Hush would be Conversations With Dead People, mainly for the Willow-Cassie and Dawn-Joyce scenes.

Hush is creepy and Shit but If CWDP wouldve been there I think I mightve picked that instead. Just due to the fact that i recently rewatched it so I know that it freakin creepy as hell, It made me turn on the light at my house.

Rather easily 'Killed by Death.' Only one that's had a real effect on me in regards to 'creepiness.' It gave me a nightmare - I was being dragged along the floor by Der Kindestod and couldn't scream. Fairly standard nightmare I suppose, other than the fact it included a Buffy villain. I didn't have a problem with any of the others really, and especially not Hush.

urbanlegend23
30-07-08, 08:35 AM
Killed by Death didn't really scare me at all. Der Kindestod was scary but he wasn't fully utilised by the writers. If he had more screentime (like as much as The Gentlemen) he would've been a much more memorable filler-episode villain.

I can't understand how you can be scared by that episode and not by Hush, which - let's face it - pretty much blows every other episode out of the water in terms of creepiness.

06-08-08, 03:18 PM
"Hush" was creepy, yeah, but whenever I watch it I'm just amazed at the artistry behind it; that always gets in the way of the ep being scary for me, I guess. And "Passions" was just amazingly well done, too much so to really be creepy -- more exciting, yeah, and horrifying, but not really creepy, you know? "Fear, Itself" was funny, with moments of creepiness, but balanced enough to be nothing more than a really great episode of Buffy. "Conversations with Dead People" had quite a few scary moments, especially everyone's favorite quote, but, again, it was nicely balanced. I would have liked to see a Xander section to that episode, but that's another matter altogether.

No, the episode that I found the creepiest was "Killed by Death." The episode had some funny parts, but not enough to lighten the mood, especially with the terror those children were facing. Plus, Buffy was sick, and she had to make herself sicker to fight the demon, which takes "creepy" to a whole new level. I watched all of Buffy and Angel on DVD for the first time, which was nice because marathoning was an option -- and I always took it. I watched all of Season 1 in one night, and the next night I watched the first half of Season 2. When I got to "Killed by Death," I couldn't sleep, even though I had been up all night. That's the only episode that really creeped me out, all things considered.

The Watcher
06-08-08, 09:19 PM
Definitely "Hush". The gentlemen were disturbing, that's a given but not having the ability to verbally communicate is what sways me to this episode. It could be almost any sort of cult/ demon/ monster or w/e and it would still be terrifying. Although the gentlemen probably worked best for viewing anyway.

It has to be Hush for me as it is the only episode that really creeped me out, the gentleman and the music are really scary. The idea that people cannot talk either makes it even more scary and it is like something out of a horror film. I would also put Killed by Death and Same Time, Same Place up there but Hush has become a cult hit even with people who are not Buffy fans because of the horror surrounding that episode.

I just rewatched "Fear Itself" last night - it's a really good episode. I'm doing a rewatch with my boyfriend (who is watching it for the first time). I haven't watched seasons 4-7 in years, so I've forgotten much about many of the episodes.

This one was really creepy and scary at times, with just the right amount of funny at the end. I wound up voting for Hush in the poll, but this one would be second for me.

As creepy as Hush is, it never scared me, I found it cool. There is only one episode I was totally creeped out by so much that I had to stop it halfway through to get control of myself and then continue watching was Killed by Death. That villan was just so horrible. I have nightmares about him! Good episode and I can mange to watch it now but the first time it really shook me up. And I wasn't a kid either I was 18 when I first watched it.

I totally agree with the above statement. Hush never really disturbed me as much as Killed By Death did. I found it utterly disturbing and I had nightmares for a LONG time after I watched it.
I still loved the episode, it had a fantastic story line, and a terrific baddie. ; )
Hush was scary because of silence. Ha.

Killed by Death. The Kindestod seriously was scary. I mean, at the age of 24 one is supposed to be a grown man, but that creature still "wigged me out", as they say. :) That you can't see him normally is bad enough, makes him hard to fight (and the idea that somethign invisible is sneaking around... creepy!), but then, when you see him... the way his eyes wide before those sucker stalk thingies come out of them... Bloody scary.

Second would be Hush, though it has quite a lot of comic relief.

Which was the episode where Anya gets possessed and her eyes white out, and she goes after someone with a knife? I can't put my finger on the title, but that was the creepiest thing I had ever seen. Also, the kids in Gingerbread. Kids creep me out.

RuFio
30-09-08, 06:13 PM
The eppy when Anya's eyes were white and she had the knife was "afterlife"

The Der Kindestod in "Killed by Death" is definitely up there as one of the freakiest baddies, but I think "Hush" was overall scarier. I was 13 when I first saw it and it legit scared the shizz out of me.

Out of those listed above, I'd have to go with Hush and Passion.

Personally though, I think the creepiest episode was Listening To Fear. The way the queller demon moved, and wriggled was unsettling. But the real freaky thing, in my opinion, was when it on the ceiling was above Joice in the bedroom.

What made it really creepy was how Joyce was talking to it all along and Dawn just blocking her ears because she couldn't bear that her mother was "going mad" (while in fact she really was reacting to something, eve if oddly)... Oh, the suspense...

Agreed. Joices ramblings ("eyes like puddles" and so on) towards the Queller could easily have been dismissed as the ramblings of a mad woman. The Queller was very well timed, and could almost have brought about Joices untimely demise a few episodes earlier than The Body.

"The Wish" is the creepiest episode. I remember as a kid watching that girl getting hooked up to the blood machine just freaked me out for weeks. It is still hard for me to watch that scene cause it is just so twisted and dark and one of the darkest things Buffy has done.

But on the list "Passions" cause I remember also as a kid Angel killing Jenny! Oh that is something just sticks with you. And just the darkness of Angelus.
