So I'd almost forgotten about this and it's available to watch on July 15th and again on the 17th and 19th for free at:-

http://www.drhorrible.com/

There's a trailer up on the site, and I have to say that I missed hearing Joss's words spoken out loud. This looks great fun, and has Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day (Vi from Buffy, in case you were wondering) in it too.

Here's a link to the information I got about it

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/tv/2008/07/note_to_ed_the_phrases.html

It would make Joss's day if there were thousands and thousands watching it, give him a bit of validation after the bad luck he's had with Firefly, so who on here's gonna watch it?

I want to watch it!! I missed the July 15th date...

I went to the site - but all that's up is the trailer! How do you get to see the actual vid? Do they show it on the site but only on those dates?

Any other information??

Um unless I've overslept for a couple of days you've not missed the date cos it hasn't arrived yet. Today's the 11th so the first act will be shown on Monday. (Yeah I was looking at June when I thought it was on Sunday, DOH!)

The second act will be shown on Thurs, and the third act will be shown next Saturday. All three acts will be on site to watch for 48 hrs and on Sunday they'll be taken down.

I didn't realise there was a thread already running about this, and it's got a bit more information there:-

Sorry ciderdrinker - I have returned from my trip in the future - I thought I read it as July 5th. Good! I haven't missed it! And thank you for responding!!

I've been telling my friends about this for months. It's funny because people respond to the phrase "Dr. Horrible" in very different ways. Some think it's amazing and some are total wet blankets about it. It shares that with Buffy for sure. (Does anyone else use that reaction to determine whether or not to become friends with someone?)

Spread the word! It's on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and others. :)

See now I'm the opposite... "Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long" intrigues me! ;) But I understand what you mean. Kinda like going to a Dr. named Klutz. :D

For those interested, Part I of "Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog" is now available online...

Thanks KoC!!

Just buzzed over!! it's wonderful!! :2party: Glad they showed it early - I was afraid with everyone on the site tomorrow it might slow things down.

The cast is great! It's the first time I've ever seen Nathan sing - he's not half bad! And Felicia has a lovely voice!

Did Joss make a cameo?? Is he one of the singing cowboys? Maybe the one on the right?

ciderdrinker

Great! Just Great!!! :( It's only available in the US. :bang: I just can't believe this, I was soo excited, and now will have to wait to pay for it. I don't mind paying for it, but I wanted to support the effort by being part of the "event" and now I can't :cutecry:

EDIT: I swung over to Whedonesque and there was a comment from some Aussie dude who suggested ths:-

Download this thingumybob. Install it and the streaming works! I don't know how it works but it does and it's genius!

EDIT 2:

I've seen it now and I LOVED it!

Ah Joss, you make my day!

I actually have this already - spoilered for boring splainy:

It's basically a network creator - it takes your computer and makes it into its own network, and by doing so changes your ip address, which confuses hulu and sometimes allows you to see US videos. It doesn't work all the time, and soemtmies it makes your internet speed incredibly slow, and I have no idea whatsoever WHY that is, but that's the basic gist.

Thanks ciderdrinker!!!

However it works - it did for me, so for that I'm extremely grateful. I turned it off once I'd watched it, so dunno about the speed thing.

Will it not be put up on youtube or summat perhaps?

ciderdrinker
15-07-08, 12:00 PM
I suppose it's possible if people are tech savvy and can work out how to do that. The way I see it, is Joss wanted to do something for the internet that could only be seen by those that subscribe/pay or whatever to prove that "Made for the Internet" is a viable option.

Putting it on youtube, would be the same as putting on an ep of a tv show on youtube - violates copyright etc, I'd imagine, and would negate the whole point - but then I'm sure that Joss realises that thats a risk - he mentions in the "Plan" that he would rather people pay for the download so that he can pay the crew.

Ok Dr Horrible is now available internationally, without having to download anything!!

Ok, I just love

that it ends with the word balls!!!! Also, the singing was excellent, and I'm enjoying the anti-hero protagonist thingie. Though it's definitely not what I was expecting...

I must have the slowest internet ever.. been trying to watch the whole thing all day, but either it crashes or I have to go out, then I get home again and have to start all over :p Trying to watch it now... seems like it plays smoothly if i pause it, and leave it for a while.. Bleh, anyway so far my favourite bit is when Neil winks 'anyday' - he's such sweetie.

I hate to be the first negative reply but wasn't the filming more talking faces and less of Joss's normal filming style. There were no long extended takes or any of the other shots he is known for. It just seems a bit more average to me. The singing was good though.

I´ve seen it already and I love it! Hilarious, good singing, good acting and just awesome! Really, very original! I knew Joss wouldn´t let me down!

I cannot wait for Act II.

I can't wait for the soundtrack. The songs are all stuck in my head like whoa. :D

I bought the season pass on iTunes, because Dr. Horrible is totally a must-have for my iPod. Plus, $3.99 isn't half bad for the whole musical.

AlienEeeter

I woke up early this morning so I could see it first thing--rode to school singing 'A Man's Gotta Do' Hilarious. And I loved the last line-- "Balls!"

BlasterBoy
16-07-08, 12:08 AM
OMG I love it. All the songs were so amazing and everyone had so amazing voices. Nathan Fillion is always awesome, and Felicia Day had a surprisingly awesome voice.

My only complaint is the length. It was 13 minutes long. Are all the acts gonna be that short? Is the whole thing only going to be around 40 minutes? I'm really hoping the other acts are longer. :)

BTW, anyone know where you can find lyrics to the awesomeness that are the songs?

I just went over to Whedonesque to see what the reaction to Dr Horrible has been, and this is what you're getting:-

Due to a traffic spike caused by the release of Dr Horrible, our host has shut down our database. We have moved to a new server and are working to activate the new database and site.

Seems it's been pretty popular then!

I have stuck on my head the lyrics and some of the lines, too.

So I just watched Act 2 and can't decide which act I like best. The songs were better in Act 1 I think but I did laugh out loud at some of it, especially...

"The hammer is my penis"

So really what you're saying, Captain Hammer, is that you've named yourself "Captain Penis"

Dude! I totally just posted the exact same line in the other thread! It was really, really hilarious.

I think I like this act better...the first act was a bit slow to start, with the blog stuff...and I actually really liked the songs in this act!

Wolfie Gilmore
17-07-08, 11:10 AM
I didn't much like the blog stuff in act one - felt like old jokes and territory for Joss after the Troika in season 6 of Buffy - but the songs were excellent. Captain Hammer. He needs every square inch of his ass kicked. While Doctor Horrible? AWww, bless!

alexa
17-07-08, 01:06 PM
I'm enjoying the blog part of it actually, he's such a cliche and a juxtaposition at the same time. Which I guess is Joss' signature.. along with pain and death. Sucks this only runs 3 times.

I just saw Act II and really, this is just genius! I laughed so loud in this, especially when Dr. Horrible was singing in the opening, and behind him were some homeless guys near a fire! That kind of reminded me of Walk through Fire. NPH is awesome, Nathan too and Felicia Day actually surprises me. The songs are better and I just love the constant winking of Dr. Horrible.

Best line:
"I have a PHD in horribleness".

BlasterBoy
17-07-08, 06:19 PM
I loved Act II.

The songs were fabulous, and "On The Rise" might be my favorite of all of them. The "Brand New Day" is a pretty good song, but I liked the others a bit better. I'm disappointed at the amount of talking vs. singing, cause I want a soundtrack, but a soundtrack wouldn't be too good with 6 songs  I love it so far, though.

I want a sequel. And it's not even over yet.

"I want to be an achiever. Like Bad Horse."

"The third bred of sin?"

litzie
17-07-08, 06:30 PM
I think it was the Thoroughbred of sin...not positive though...

And yes, more songs please! Though hopefully there'll be three more in the next act, and bring our total up! Plus, I want the story to make sense, so if that means he has to have this much talking I'm ok with that.

AlienEeeter
17-07-08, 06:46 PM
The songs were better in this episode, but I'm sad that Nathan didn't sing. The only thing that bothers me is that they don't seem to end properly, just kind of hanging mid-note.

The 'hammer' line killed me. I was still laughing after watching 4 times!

Hey just managed to watch Parts I and II. My computer hasn't been letting me access the site anytime I tried until now! :cutecry: So I am just gonna write this stuff as I watch it so yeah don't be surprised if the post seems pretty random lol...

So here's my thoughts on it. Well I gotta say that the first few minutes of it were a little on the boring side. The only thing which saved them honestly were that one, or two of the jokes he made were hiliarious. Also gotta say this guy is really good at making comedic facial expressions. However once the music picked in during Act I it got so much better. I loved the first song and the freezing effect when he sang about stopping time. "No I I I love the hair"

I also loved the evil league song of the cowboys when he opens the letters. :D. OMG his first conversation with Penny how hiliarious was he when he was trying to make up his mind about whether he should acknowledge the fact that he knows who she is, or pretend that he didn't even notice her before  Then theres his annoyance about the fact that she chose then of all times to talk to him :p. Who else also enjoyed the role reversal at the end of Act I with the bad guy being concerned about the girl that the hero just pushed aside without any thought?

"Hopes and dreams are shattering apart and crashing to the ground" I loved that whole song, but especially that song. There probably going to french kiss or something gotta say for a villian he's pretty naive. :2party:. "The hammer is my penis." For the supposed hero of the piece gotta say he really is an aholes. Thank you Joss for representing the heros of the piece for the aholes they can be at times :xd

All I can see is bring on Act III

litzie
17-07-08, 07:03 PM
I kind of feel like the endings are a bit like commercial breaks in a tv show...some sense of pause, but not closure, if that makes sense.

Vampmaster
17-07-08, 07:23 PM
Yeah I get what you mean and I think Joss intended for it to be this way. After all I believe the three parts are all apart of the one movie/episode. Whatever way you want to refer to it as  Hope that answers your question.

Does anyone know who plays the lower-left cowboy for the "Bad Horse" bits? I get the feeling I've seen him before.

Also, the "neigh" joke was also a little more funny because of the comics.

The second act is better imo too. I really love the first song. And NPH is awesome as Dr. Horrible. Being a fan of How I Met Your Mother, I really appreciate his excellent delivery skills.

Anyway, this is a fun little internet thing I look forward to last part tomorrow. :)

ThePoet's<3
18-07-08, 11:56 PM
Second part was better than first - the first song was really catchy! I kept thinking how "Joss-like" it was to cram that many words into a verse - with the off-tempo "under-line" (think OMWF the "Heaven" song: "Heeeeaven...it must have been Heeeeeaven...I think i was in Heeeeeeeaven."). As someone who performs chorus I kept thinking how hard it would be to remember the words and get them right while "lip-cinquing"!

I love Nathan's quirky faces!! He really has a great sense of comic timing! And yes, NPH is just wonderful!!

Okay - I'm 'Shipping Dr. Horrible and Penny... Any fun "names" out there??

NileQT87

pennible? horrny? porrible? and then there's hamny, hanny, hammy, henny, penner or pammer.

Just watched act III. It wasn't quite what I had expected, but you know, very Joss.

Why does Joss enjoy killing innocent main characters so much? Ugh. Songs were better in ep 2--'Everyone's a Hero' has its funny moments but mostly I'm not impressed. The ending really kinda rocked, after we got all the death out of the way. Bad Horse was awesome, as was the Purple Pimp and Death Bowie.

And seeing the mutant enemy logo at the end was very nostalgic.

NileQT87
19-07-08, 08:08 AM
oh, joss. lmao.

is it bad that i kind of laughed a little when joss killed off penny? so typically him.

part III was definitely the highlight. david fury and marti noxon were great. doug petrie and drew goddard are also in there. and mike massa did stunts. probably the only thing missing was joss, himself.

the part i almost teared up at...? the mutant enemy "grr... argh" dude. i missed him.

Jenni Lou
19-07-08, 08:26 AM
Well, we got to see David and Marti.

Yeah....it was weird. Still enjoyable. And as AlienEater writes, very Joss. It's such a interesting little internet thing. Fun and silly and strangely moving. I read that it will be put on DVD at some point so that's very cool. And I put up some caps of the first two parts on my site already...may have to make some Horrible fanart. Only it won't hopefully actually be, you know, horrible. ;)

Also agree that the second act had the best songs. Though I did like the last one in this third act with the little chorus in the background.. "everything you ever..." or something. That was pretty. :)

Maybe I should put my reaction in spoilers
What?! Well of course she dies, did I forget what I was watching? And I still didn't see it coming. :( I loved it, but kinda bummed me out, and I don't wanna be bummed out anymore then I was.. or say bummed out so much.
But I guess there's that other Whedon rule.. those that die are doomed to return.. probably, maybe.
Awesome job Horrible team, watched all the credits, waiting for Penny to pop up or something, but had the ME monster instead.. which is honestly almost as good ;)

Oh and big smile to see David and Marti!

Posted that on whedonesque, and bloody hell people there are sensitive to any comments that aren't love and puppies.

Okay... Act III - Big disappointment. I don't think I remember Joss being this bad. Even the songs were bad.

But kudos to the cast - they were excellent!

And yes - quite a few of the Whedonverse family - Doug Petrie as Professor Normal, David Fury and Marti Noxon for the anchors, Drew Goddard as Fake Thomas Jefferson - OH - and the guy I thought was Joss playing a cameo in the first Act?? Singing in the chorus? JED Whedon - Joss's half-brother!

AND... If you are a credit "Ho" like me - you will see "GRRR...ARGHHH" at the VERY END - where it should be... ;)

Fehmina

i can't get the songs out of my head!

Felicia Day has been a real surprise... i really hope she does well professionally from here.

i'm surprised at some of the feedback for this act. i really liked it :)

Just watched Act 3...

I showed this to a friend of mine who's not at all interested in Joss and all his works, but when they got to the bit where Penny dies she said "I've got real goosebumps!" to which I replied "Joss Whedon and all his brilliance!"

The end was a surprise, but also not. Anything by Joss can't have a completely happy ending can it!

I did love the "fans" of Capt Hammer, and how Penny saw through him in the end, but when she said "Capt Hammer will save us" I was really sad that she didn't say something to Dr Horrible that would change his mind.

The last line "I feel nothing" totally gave me the shivers!

Sheesh, that was a negative review??!

I liked it, especially the very end, but was kinda bummed penny died...Everyone's right, yes, typical joss, but...still...the rest of it was so much lighter! no need for death! And the death didn't quite fit with the tone I felt. Also the capt hammer will save us line was kind of weird, considering she'd recognised horrible as "billy buddy" during his song. But, meh, overall I still like it.

AlienEeeter
19-07-08, 03:59 PM
[The hammerfans were awesome ("we do the weird stuff"). On re-watching, the opening song isnt too bad. Joss tells us right there in the song that there is no happy ending. Capt. Hammer's song is still bad though, almost painful to watch.
I love that everyone was just excited about the logo at the end as everything else.

BlasterBoy
19-07-08, 05:57 PM
Oh, wow! You guys disliked "So They Say"? Seriously!? :( IMO, the best 3 songs go like this:

1. So They Say
2. On The Rise
3. A Man's Gotta Do
4. Dr Horrible's Turn ("Yeah, yeah, it's two 'r's) :xd

I mean, "So They Say" was hilarious and EXTREMELY catchy. I've been singing it non-stop. "we do the weird stuff!"  Now, for the review....

holy mother frakker.....

I should've known, but silly me, I thought this was a musical comedy. *sigh* Penny dying pissed me off, and the end felt very unsatisfying. That aside, the last song didn't do it for me. I loved up until "Dr. Horrible's Turn" (when Hammer's frozen), and then I kind of drifted away. The last scene with the Evil League of Evil was nice, but not satisfying, and basically destroys any dreams of a sequel *sigh* That aside, this musical was AWESOME! The songs have me singing them repeatedly! And I love all the humor that was thrown in. Felicia Day, NPH, and Nathan Fillion are just geniuses, and I'm so buying the DVD, like, 5 times when it comes out  Here is my dream track list for a soundtrack:

"Dr. Horrible's Theme" (first song in credits)
"Freeze Ray"
"Bad Horse"
"A Man's Gotta Do"
"On The Rise"
"Wild Horse" (Reprise)
Penny's Song in the Laundromat
"Brand New Day"
"So They Say"
"Everyone's A Hero"
"Dr. Horrible's Turn" (song when Hammer is frozen)
"Everything You Ever"

REALLY want the CD out now so I can never stop listening to it :)

Very sad ending. Overall, I think it was a bit patchy in places - not quite a high enough funny line hit rate...but some genius in there. The comment about "you get to do the weird stuff" or whatever it was re sleeping with the same girl twice...hee. Love it. But hate Captain Hammer. Gross.

Dr. Horrible or Captain Hammer?

I vote Dr.Horrible. He is such a geek, that when he´s trying to be bad, he really sucks. But he´s not entirely evil, he´s nice in a geeky way!

Guys, does Bad Horse is the same as Black Sheep? Or it is some known comic character? Any pop reference here?

Well, *Dark* Horse is the name of the comic company that publishes season 8.

I like Capt. Hammer as a character, but as a person I would smack him. As a character he's funny in his cluelessness. Dr. Horrible is the most 3 dimensional i think, but my favorites are the 3 fan kids. "We do the weird stuff."

Oh yeah, it was great. And once again I rooted for the villain  Neil Patrick Harris was marvellous. The end of course was very unexpected, very Joss I guess, but it was a little too dark for such a light little show, for my taste anyway. But this doesn't change the fact that it was great and I'll definitely rewatch it. The songs were great and Nathan as Captain Hammer, too. "Have I seen you at the gym? I don't go to the gym I'm just naturally like this." :D You just had to hate him!

And if the doom that's looming
is you loving me to death,
then I'll give you a sec
to catch your breath.

No specific reference I can think of, but I like the idea of an oblique reference to Dark Horse. :)

To me, it conjures up black and white tv show villains, the sort of person who might crop up in a cowboy show. But maybe that's just the cowboys making me think that.

For those of us outside of the US (and those who just want to see them again!) I uploaded a few of my favorite songs from Dr. Horrible onto youtube. Of course, I am highly urging everyone to purchase the real thing on iTunes (which I've already done) and the DVDs when they're out!

Here's the songs.

Laundry Day (My Freeze Ray) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfaXt1rC2G0)

A Man's Gotta Do (+ Reprise) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN3eBvZvUXk)

On the Rise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOKm7mxGV6w)

Perfect Story (So They Say) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aksof50qPI)

Everyone's a Hero (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yGeroywBuo)

The Nightmare's Real (Finale) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wD_S2HaUBE)

Of course, these contains spoilers if you haven't watched them yet, so you've been warned! and certainly enjoy, Buffyites. =)

But did you really think watching Act I after hearing those lyrics that hmm, I predict, that's gonna happen? Perhaps I'm too simple-minded but it didn't even cross my (simple) mind. Anyhow, I really did love it (and the character of Dr Horrible AND Neil Patrick Harris) but I just think the end was a bit too much. I wanted light funny fun and I got ... well... Joss

Oh dear, perhaps I should take up romantic comedies instead...

But after watching the whole thing, when I listened to the songs again I suddenly realised "Oh my God, he told us right there in the first act what the ending was going to be!" :O

Dr. Horrible is available for free viewing again, this time on Hulu.
I saw it again yesterday and I´m gonna watch it again today. I´m totally addicted to this!

When I first watched Dr. Horrible I noticed that one of the extras in the laundromat (the woman who opens the dryer right before Penny in the first song) looked incredibly familiar. I knew she had to be from Buffy, but I wasn't sure from where.

Yesterday I was watching 'I Only Have Eyes for You.' The woman was the teacher that got shot by the janitor.

That is very cool. I was hoping to watch it again, but Hulu is restricted to the US only again.

Do you know that the soundtrack is being released late August? I´m totally gonna buy.

Well I come late to the table but I finally got around to watching 'Doctor Horrible' and I really enjoyed it. I love the look of the production, the colours, the costumes, it's all very comic book villainy and it works very well, it's so rich and textured and at the same time very light-hearted. It even reminded me somewhat of 'The Mighty Boosh,' especially at the end when Doctor Horrible joins the evil league, it's just so out-there and bizarre and interesting to look at.

The actors were great, Neil Patrick Harris was superb as Doctor Horrible, he was a delight and has some really great comedic timing, anytime he delivered a line about Captain Hammer throwing a car at him or dislocating his shoulder, I cracked up laughing. He just delivered it so well, he was so pathetic and you could hear the resentment in his voice, it actually made you feel quite sorry for him.

Nathan Fillion did a great job as Captain Hammer, a truly obnoxious character but incredibly fun to watch, I loved his line about St Peter and whomever his equivalent would be in Hell, it was so awkward and a great parade on all those outlandish lines you can get in superhero stories and cheesy movies.

And Felicia Day.. Well what can you say about her, absolutely gorgeous and she brought such a sweet vulnerable side to her character. She was my favourite potential, possibly the only one I liked in season seven and she didn’t disappoint me here either. She also has a very, very nice singing voice.

The ending was incredibly sad, and rather unexpected given the light-heartedness of everything leading up to it. I got a little emotional when Penny died, which isn’t something I expected from this whatsoever, Felicia did an outstanding job managing to suddenly bring such a grounding sense of realism to an otherwise flamboyant and over exaggerated world, it was touching and heartbreaking. And her last line was heartbreakingly terrible.. “Don’t worry Captain Hammer will save us…” Poor Doctor Horrible and poor Penny. :( :cutecry:

It’s very Jossian to have such a dark ending isn’t it? But I gotta say, I liked it. It’s what makes his work so different from the rest and makes you think about it long after you’ve finished watching it, there’s many different layers. I liked that, despite how relatable and vulnerable Doctor Horrible was, he still had to ultimately pay the true price for being evil or wanting to mess around as the villain.. A lot like The Trio in Btvs season six. Very nice symbolism of his white costume turning into red after the death of Penny. So I was pleasantly surprised that even in ‘Dr Horrible Sing-Along Blog’ I could still find some really thought provoking stuff to think about some more, Joss never disappoints.

So yup, I liked it, pity I didn’t watch it sooner I wish I had back when there was hype around it but I thought I’d come in and share my thoughts anyway.

Oh and nice cameo of Marti Noxon and David Greenwalt. :)

At DragonCon (Atlanta, GA, USA) this year a lot of folks were dressed up as Captain Hammer. I am more a Doc H. fan myself. I think Captain Hammer is a tool.

I seem to watch this every other day, I completely love it. I think most of that is down to NPH, legend that he is. I especially love the scenes in the laundromat (am I spelling that right?) with Billy and Penny, they're so cute and awkward.

Plus I so want the Bad Horse ringtone.

I have the soundtrack on my i-pod and like to walk to work with "Slipping". Puts me in the right mood for work.

I get a real rebellious vibe from this. I mean, I know it was written in the strike so I'm sure it's influenced by Joss's views of this, but I feel a bit more of a sociological aspect to it too. Like, we all root for Dr Horrible and to some extent I understand his comments about society and being angry at it. So, I suppose Joss is trying to say, if you have a problem with what you see, help to change it (like Penny), just be careful about how you do so (like Billy).

My favorourite track is On The Rise, it's in my most played on the iPod already.

I think it's a really nice study on what is truly good and truly evil. You wonder how anyone who has such a goofy crush and hapless alterego could possibly be completely evil, and at the same time there's Captain Hammer, who is perceived as a hero because he does good things, although he does them for the wrong reasons.

And then there's Moist - not sure what Joss was saying there, though I find it humourous that 'moist' is a word Lily hates on HIMYM!

Dr. Horrible is another fine example of the amazingness of Joss. :)

I love the dynamic between Billy and Penny, and the heartbreaking ending that we've come to know all too well in other works.

The music is downright amazing, and I especially like Penny's voice. I think it's reminiscent of Willow's from BtVS, but with a clearer tone quality. My favorite song out of all is On the Rise, with Slipping running a very close second.
