And I know what you mean about The Secret Garden, I loved that movie as a kid too (the Hallmark version that is where they show the parents dying in the beginning--very creepy!), but only just remembered that I DID read the book for school in fourth grade....and had trouble b/c of the ****ney accents in it! *amends list*

It really is a bit random selection on the modern novels. Why for example include Niffenegger (which is fairly good I've heard but not THAT good). And theres nothing from John Banville or William Boyd for example. And why the hell is that trash "Da Vinci Code" on the must-read list?! I personally want back my 4 hours I spent with this "book".
Here are many books that I for some reason missed as a child/teenager and I find there's no reason for me to read them now (e.g Les Miserables, Three Musketeers, Monte-Cristo) and I do know the plot anyway and can discuss the books to the certain extent, so they do exist in my "cultural library" in a way anyway :lol:

My faves from the list are Lolita and The Catcher in the Rye. Oh man, both of those are so fluid and striking and in completely different ways. I recommend them to everyone.

I have a degree in Fiction Writing and as you could imagine, that involved quite a bit of reading. SO the fact that I have not read the bulk of that list does not disturb me. I mean,, come one, like I am ever going to sit down and read the whole damn Bible. :rolleyes: Or series that I have no interest in, i.e. HP, LotR, Narnia. Or the complete works of Shakespeare. I've read a lot of his works but seriously...the guy has a freakin' catalogue! You wouldn't many people who have read everything of his!

I have a wonderful reason for not reading books such as To Kill a Mockingbird and other classics that most people would have read in school. The years in school that a student would have read such novels, I had complete idiots as English/Literature teachers. One teacher actually had to pull out her books that she used in college to understand Julius Caesar. The one decent teacher that we had, had to go by the school approved reading book that we were given. It had Great Expectations, Shakespeare, Pygmalion...that stuff. But none of the great classics. I blame it all on a redneck education.

I think the saddest thing about going through this list for me was realizing that I'd only read most of these because I was forced to in school, and that when I got to bold another number it was the only time I was happy that I'd read The Grapes of Wrath, for example. heh.

I think the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a separate book to make it easier for people to choose that as read. Most people have read that book, but have not read the rest of the series. I think a lot of people when they read that book didnt even know it was part of a series.

I don't like this list anyway. Too many books I have never heard of. Mostly the newer ones I think...all the classics I have heard of. One of these days I hope to read all the books on the list of normally banned/controversial books. Should make for interesting reads.

Wow, good question!

Um...well, when I was about 11 until I was 18, I must have read at least 300 books a year. I used to read so fast...and I worked in a bookstore for my first job, when I was sixteen, and I used to get to take books home and then bring them back for free...I would stay up all night finishing a book. Aww, back in the days when I thought reading was more important than sleep!

So that's 21 or 22 for me (I lost count halfway through!). I'm impressed with myself to be honest, but a couple of these I studied at school and didn't pick up out of my own choice! I haven't struck out any because I've always found that even the hardest books to read are a worthwhile chore, so I would never say that I wouldn't at least give it a try - although there are some on the list that I wouldn't fancy, I would still give them a go if someone handed me the book.

EDIT: I've just noticed a few more that I missed making my total about 25 now. I haven't included any Shakespeare but I have read a few at scholl, but not the complete works, and I've done some Dickens too, but not sure which ones!

I'm gonna go ahead and recommend Cloud Atlas and The Time Travellers Wife, both are books that play with your head and expectations. The Time Travellers Wife is surely a must for Doctor Who fans - all that timey wimey stuff!

you know, come to think of it, I am QUITE surprised there's nothing on here by Edgar Allan Poe, I had to read most of his stuff in high school. Yeah, I don't think it's supposed to be the 100 best books, just as you say bestsellers with a bunch of classics (I can understand the potential doubles, b/c for example few have read the Complete Works of Shakespeare here, but many have read Hamlet....). They claim most adults have only read 6 of these, but as people point out there are many classics and great books not on this list....still, I find it an interesting enough activity. ;)

It's definitely not any sort of official list. It's kind of a sloppy collection, actually. To have the "duplicates" and then have a few authors listed twice while leaving out others, like Twain or Henry James, for example.....it just could have been a better list. :/ Hell, with some of the titles I am surprised that there wasn't a single mention of Stephen King, who is arguably one of the most popular authors of the past 50 years. Admittedly, I haven't read a lot of King or Grisham or other popular authors. Most of my reading int he past decade has been smaller circulated authors, such as many of the professors I was lucky enough to be taught by.

Someone should come up with a new list and we can call it "how many of these NEXT books have you read?" :D

It's definitely not any sort of official list. It's kind of a sloppy collection, actually. To have the "duplicates" and then have a few authors listed twice while leaving out others, like Twain or Henry James, for example.....it just could have been a better list. :/ Hell, with some of the titles I am surprised that there wasn't a single mention of Stephen King, who is arguably one of the most popular authors of the past 50 years. Or John Grisham or Tom Clancy, for that matter.
