View Full Version : Where have you traveled?

well, we are quite an international community, so, where have all the buffy forum members been and lived?
make your own travel map: http://www.travbuddy.com/world-travel-map
(and don't be afraid to make your list or put-off by mine! in my defense, my parents were in the airlines and i'm a bit of a travel whore. i'd love to know where other people have been!)
also... if people do post here, we can make a forum-wide map of everyone's travels all together and see if we can fill up the majority of the map. with only me, thus far, we're already at 8% of the world's countries.

the funniest thing i ever saw in austria (besides mozartkugeln--"mozart balls") was a t-shirt saying that there are no kangaroos in austria. lmao. apparently some dimwitted tourists have mistaken austria for australia (yikes).
most sea life just creeps me out. i'm completely terrified of crocodiles, alligators, sharks, narwhals, etc... the sobek temple in egypt (kom ombo) had a room full of mummified crocodiles... let's just say i was scared crapless and couldn't actually go in that room. i also used to be terrified of animatronic dinosaurs--i hid my face at the national history museum in london.
well... so far, my awards to best (and favorite) graveyards go to: valley of the kings (thebes, egypt), el cementerio de la recoleta (buenos aires, argentina), petersfriedhof (salzburg, austria), the imperial crypt (vienna, austria), etc...
and yes. i've been to a lot of graveyards. i'm kind of known for liking them (surprise, surprise).
and an update due to litzie!: http://www.travbuddy.com/widget_map_display.php?id=3072735
wow. nice that you've lived in those places. i've only lived in san diego (same house) and ensenada.

So, no-one has been to Brazil? Yey me!! I've noted that most of you guys are from some part of europe or from the united states, is anyone around that, like me, is from South America?

Actually I live in a small country: Paraguay (we got mentioned once in the show, you know, in Ep. "As you were"), it is located in between Argentina and Brazil, and that's why I've had the chance to visit both places. I visited Argentina when I was a child, so I don't remember that much, but Brazil I've visited three or four times, went to the beach.
If you like to travel a lot and you like warm weather and the beach, you should definitely go to Brazil. It's beautiful.

hey, paraguay counts! now south america isn't looking so blank anymore. my half-sister's husband is from buenos aires. his parents still live down there. they are very nice. unfortunately, they speak about as much english as i speak spanish (un poquito--i took a few years in school, but it's mostly gone, baby, gone). lots of awkward silence and weird pointing (¿eso? ¿esta cosa?--okay, i do know way more than that).
though, i think i've become quite humored with argentinian spanish (the "ll"s and "y"s are pronounced like "j"s instead of the english "y" sound). and of course, lots of barbecue, bife de lomo, empanadas and italian food (buenos aires had a ton of italian immigrants--also where the german nazis went after wwII under the juan perón administration). sarmiento's legacy is also all over the place (including the building of la casa rosada). general belgrano is also one of the major argentinian historical figures. and of course, mate (a bitter tea-like drink) and the tango.
and i'm quite enamored of el cementerio de la recoleta--most beautiful necropolis i've ever seen. maría eva duarte de perón (evita) is in her family's mausoleum in la recoleta--it's a very unassuming and non-fancy one that you'd never notice if all the tourists didn't lead you to it--plus with all the flowers. some of the mausoleums are just humongous and crazily ornate with lots of statuary, pillars, gothic spires, etc... it's a whole city of them.
they actually found eva perón's embalmed body buried in another woman's tomb in milan, italy. the embalmer had taken one of her fingers and soldiers had danced with her body (breaking the toes) and chiseled her nose--she was repaired and reinterred in the duarte family tomb in the '70s.

well, i'm not catholic... just an unashamed tourist... but most of rome appears to have been lifted and put into the vatican. lmao. of course, there was the pope that famously went around knocking the phalli off of the roman statues (which all now have little fig leaves over their broken bits) and had clothes painted on michelangelo's nudes in the sistine chapel. "the last judgment" has a fun little aside--michelangelo hated the overseer and painted him a low corner of hell getting his parts bitten off by a serpent. in the same mural--st. bartholomew's flayed skin is a self-portrait of michelangelo, himself. and... and where else do you get to see 2 embalmed popes and an 80 foot bronze pavilion (st. peter's basilica)?
check out the bottom right corner of michelangelo's "last judgment" mural: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/64/Lastjudgement.jpg

Thanks:), It's nice to hear that from you. There are tons of ruins but the ones that are protected are just some of them. Because of the unconsciousness for historical places, a lot of them are destroyed and that's really sad to know. anyway, I still didnt get a chance to see ephesus but I'm looking forward to.
