Challenge 70: Betrayal / Forgiveness
An Apocalypica Lyrical Challenge
http://www.primordialsouls.com/random/bfchallenges/apocalyptica1.bmp
Wowza! My fourth challenge! Where does the time go, I ask you? Alright, I've always tried to do challenges that are a little different, not something that makes you think too much (because I don't always like to think, I just want pretties sometimes) but something that challenges you artistically. I had an idea for a challenge about challenging yourself, but with what I had in mind, that would have required three pieces for one entry, and the challenges aren't as hopping as they could be, so I didn't do that one. Instead, I did a good ol' standby: Lyrical!
Who doesn't love these type of challenges and my explaining myself every time I do do a challenge? I said 'do do'. :p I've always wanted to do one, but I'm going to throw a Bre twist in there as well.
I chose Apocalyptica because this band is basically heavy metal mixed in with classical instruments. It's freaking brilliant really, and I've loved them for a long while, and I'm hoping with their most recent success, more people will be aware of who they are. Not only do they play Metallica songs, they create their own songs that tell a story all their own. I wanted to choose them because they have songs that are purely instrumental and then they have guest singers, so you have two options for your entries:
Option 1: For this option, you use the lyrics that I will provide to build a piece around. You have to involve the lyrics in the piece somewhere to differentiate between the two options. This is basically the classic lyrical challenge entry.
Option 2: In this option, you use a strictly instrumental song to build a piece around. Now, this can have text from an episode and/or movie, or something you've just made up, but you can't use any lyrics from another song. The idea of this piece is to use the emotion from a song without lyrics to tell a story. I should be able to listen to the song you choose and look at your piece and understand why you chose that song.
Now, using Option 2 will definitely get you extra brownie points, but looking at each of the lyrics I'll provide, I know I'll adore Option 1 just as much. You have to name the song you use, lyrical or no, so I know what I'm listening to. As for the lyrics, I'll list them according to the albums they are on, as well as the instrumental songs on there, not linked to anything. I'm really hoping this challenge will make you go out and buy one of their albums, but there are tons of sites out there, manufacturer and no, where you can listen to a clip of them, as well as on iTunes. I want to avoid handing them out like candy, because these guys deserve the recognition.

Deadline: June 1, 2008. I'm doing 4 weeks from tomorrow. Challenge will end midnight (in theory) US Mountain time. :D
ENTRIES MUST BE TITLED AND INCLUDE A LITTLE BLURB ABOUT THE PIECE! Be proud of what you create, and let me know what you were thinking and why you chose to do this or that. :xd
Have fun! Any questions, concerns, comments, etc, please shoot me a PM. :D
EDIT! As the lovely Signe has pointed out, these albums are a mere corner of the epic iceburg that is Apocalyptica. If there is another song on another album that you would like to use, please PM me to make sure I have that song, and it'll be a go. :D Thanks!

I'm a mom now so I havne't worked on my novel in ages. But before I was a mother I just loved to write. Every since I was a child I had created stories and expanded them ad thought them out ever so thoroughly. And my little magic helper was music. Oh, I had soundtracks for every bit of story; I could see the scenes unfolding as they played. I used all kinds of music as inspiration and some of my faves were instrumental pieces I had collected from all sorts of genres. It was like my own private movie score. SO anyway, I just wanted to give that explanation so you can see how I thought out this piece.
I used the song "Peace." It's lovely and lulling and has a sweetness to it. To me, it felt like a slightly spiraling score that would close out a film or episode.
So here is a fandom I have never arted before. Ugly Betty. (I'm merely a casual viewer and only catch an episode here and there. But I should probably just commit and watch them all because it actually pretty damn good.) This wasn't the last scene of the ep but the song inspired me to art it as if it were the last..if that makes sense. You don't need to know much. It is Betty's birthday and she was to spend it with her boyfriend but things didn't quite work out. So Gio--who is pretty into Betty--takes her to see a fireworks shows on a horse-drawn carriage. And that doesn't go as planed either. But an unexpected sparkage happens in the NY streets. So this s the scene. The text is just some dialogue.

I love the idea of this challenge! The instrumental part of songs often connects with me quicker and more deeply than lyrics. But reconciling music with the creating of fanart is extremely difficult and abstract. Not to mention, it requires the viewer of the fanart to have heard the song to have an idea of what is trying to be conveyed.
Apocalyptica has beautiful music and I couldn't imagine another contemporary band to which this challenge could have been focused on so perfectly. The two albums I have by them aren't included, so I purchased Cult off of itunes.

I chose this song because of the extreme sadness and aloneness. I liked how paired with the title, Beyond Time, it could describe the grief over the death of someone who has moved beyond this realm and time.
The piece is largely focused on the first third/half of the song. For me this part evokes a feeling of late night, with a gentle breeze coming and going. Alone with thoughts, particularly regret and introspection. One of those nights where time seems to stretch forever in each direction, both forward and backward.
With those two elements in mind I chose the end scene of Love Lasts Forever from Moonlight.
Beth is dealing with the loss of Josh as well as her own mixed feelings of his death. Non lyrical text is tough on me, but I wanted to capture her bewilderment and self reflection. Somewhere Beth still loved Josh, but she also hated how she didn't love him as deeply as she first did even though he was still just as wonderful a person. I can imagine her searching everywhere within herself to find that feeling of utter despair for losing Josh. Instead when she can't find it, she hates herself for feeling that way, and then lashes out at Mick for her own inability to mourn Josh the way she feels he deserves. Which leaves her all alone and even more frustrated at her emotions and wondering where the Beth she used to be has gone and where to fined the Beth she now has to be without Josh.

Entry 1: Scare me to death
Song: S.O.S. (Anything But Love)
I'd never actually listened to Apocalyptica before, and I must admit there are so many pieces of artwork that you can do to their music. I finally settled on S.O.S, it just screamed Spuffy to me. So my first entry Scare me to death is about Spike's feelings towards the way that Buffy treats him, something that was only ever really seen in Once More With Feeling, hence the reason I have chosen images from that episode and used them to come up with something. I was keen to try and show some warth to the piece as well to give Spike a more human, and less cold feeling, so I have used the earthy yellow and red gradients and textures to try and emphasis that :)

Such an awesome group! I mean the Metallica covers... I melted! So thank you very much for this challenge, that made me listen to them . A quite different but great challenge:heart::heart:!
Entry One
Song: Nothing Else Matters ("....plays Metallica" I think )
Spoilery a bit for New Moon...
I really adore this band. I can't stop obsessing! And the cover of Nothing Else Matters... as I said I really melted. I nearly think it's better than the original! I love Metallica as well, and I know I'm all mainstream but Nothing Else Matters is one of their best songs, I think. I have never listened this much to the song before either.
With this piece I took the opportunity to use the very famous quote from Twilight. The quote quite well symbolises and sums up their realtionship. He really wants to kill her, all the time, and she is the natural prey for him, since she is a human and he is a vampire.
I built it around Nothing Else Matters, since it's a sweet song but there are parts that are sharp and cruel. I mean, their realtionship is very sweet in the beginning, as well as the end, but it also takes a couple of turns. They have it not easy and it's quite sad sometimes too, she gets nearly mad when he leaves her.
I used the obvious lion and lamb (and I know it looks like a teddybear, thank you very uch Signe..not), but also the obvious fact that he is dead (the graves) and that she is ruined after he leaves him and is ruined by her love for him (the burning tree), but still lives on (at least for now). The usual forest is in the background too, symbolizes her getting lost, ans found I guess...^^
Wow another of those super long explanations again ^^.

I didn't use this song because it is a Metallica cover, I actually don't really care for the original. However, Apocalyptica's arrangements are so thoughtful and introspective adding so many new layers and understanding.
The song starts off slow and contemplative. New elements join and weave in and out, before swelling with sound and intense emotion. The wild crash subsides, repeats, before entering a point of tense anticipation and moments of hope before a crescendo to the final crash.
The song is about something within, but I wanted it to be about the evil outside lurking and trying to overtake Sam. Dean has known for so long that Sam is in danger and has been vigilant in his duty. At first Dean was in control, a hero, a friend, but eventually Sam himself was drawn to the front. By S2, the evil was separating the brothers, so that it could attack Sam. It was only through luck and determination that Dean could catch up to Sam and escape without harm. Until AHBL, when Dean is separated yet again. Even though seconds away, Dean is too late to catch up this time to save Sam.
Having been so close it's hard for Dean to accept that its really over. That he didn't make it in time. In this piece, I imagine Dean going over all the times that he did save Sam. Each memory is separate as each individually comes back to haunt him in the manner of how I described the music: starting slow, weaving in and out, and reaching multiple climactic points. The statement of the words end his thoughts and bewilderment. The final two photos are of Dean shocked into realizing that would the last time he would hold his brother.
I also appreciated the irony of the song title. That the evil would only sleep (stop pursuing them) when Sam went to sleep permanently.

I am pretty sure I have heard of this group, but still have never listened to them! I chose the song How Far, I havnt listened to the song but reading the lyics reminded me of a Vampires life, and the latest vamp I'm obsessed with is Mick:heart: so i just had to art him, I used the first verse, My life is a circle,No beginning and no end, It's always repeating, A trail I defend to the time.
Title: Pray it Will Last
Lyrical Choice: Life Burns
Credits: This time everything is my own work, except for the picture of course, which is a common promo shot floating around different sites....;)
I went with Option 1
Explainy:
When reading through the lyrics to this song, it screamed Sam and Dean in this season to me. Dean has only a few short weeks left on earth before his contract is up forcing him into eternal hell. Sam has taken on a much harder approach this season with the excuse of trying to save his brother...from killing innocent people who are possessed by demons, to even suggesting that Dean become something less than human himself in order to survive, Sam is slowly losing his at one-time all-too pure morale. While Dean on the other hand is becoming the voice of reason, of humanity. I thought the lyrics that I choose really brought out the characteristics of both brothers well at this point in the season....If you can't make them out, they are:
From Sam's perspective: We have no sympathy for the lost souls
From Dean's perspective: We have built our confidence on wasteland
From Dean's perspective: All things must pass
From Sam's perspective: And we pray it will last
As far as the art itself, I tried some new things with my program, using some buttons that I didn't know what they were for before, and playing with several gradients of my very own, which I rarely use, and also worked on tweaking some lighting. :p

My first Supernatural piece. First for the good reason that I never watched a single episode of that show, even the episode I arted here. This might sound silly but for next year AFA, I'd like to be able to enter every category, that's why I arted something I never watched. But after two years at Buffyforums, I do know a bunch of things about that show and about that ep. The disparition of the Winchester's estranged father and the fact that Dean sold his soul to save his brother inspired me to do a scene between, sorrow hope and darkness which explains the almosty black & white color scheme (sorrow), the light stocks (hope) and the black surrounding the caps (darkness). I picked "Hope vol 2" song and focused on the line about the flame which seemed to fit the scene, so I add a flame stock. That's about it!

Entry 1: Silent Suffocation
I chose Option 1 and the song "Bittersweet". I instantly thought of Jim and Pam in season 2. Normally, I would go straight to Buffy and Spike for something like this but I wanted to go outside my own comfortable box and try for a fandom/pairing that isn't often used.

Thoughts: I had been wanting to do a Twilight piece forever and finally decided I would do a manip of Nikki Reed since she is playing Rosalie in the film. I love how this manip turned out. I'm not sure who the model is, but I feel she looks very forlorn in the image, which seems to fit the lyrics I chose. Rosalie had the really horrible backstory and with that, I always see her as kind of a sad character. I wanted to show how I interpret her through this piece. I was happy to chose the German lyrics because I haven't ever been able to do a piece in German, so this was fun. Translated, the words say, "I cannot escape the feeling I was a permanent guest, the gold of this world." I like the vampire "permanent guest" notion and "the gold of this world" has to do with her beauty and the tragedy is caused her.
Entry one
Finally! School has a way of snagging more and more time from me... Anyway, I finally managed to get my piece done :D (I chose option 2)
I'll try to keep it short... (New Moon spoilers)
I chose the song Nothing Else Matters (surprise, surprise), because it simply is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and Apocalyptica's version seriously took my breath away. The passion, the sadness, the hope, the darkness - it's just full of emotions that sweep you away. That plus my current Twilight obsession made it obvious for me to chose Edward and Bella.
Now this piece centers around their passion and attraction for each other. Their love is forbidden and complicated - in the words of Angel "Human -Vampire, Woman - Man...pire". I put them far apart because in the first book Edward really tries to not get involved with her and in the second book he even leaves her because he figures that without him she can lead a normal life. I wanted the piece to be dominated by darkness because theirs is not a fluffy-puppy love. However, I also wanted to show the extreme bliss they experience when they're together. They're whole. In the center of the light you can see a kissing couple because the light represents them coming together. Around it I put the text which I chose to be optimistic because for me, even though Nothing Else Matters sounds sad and like it's "complaining" about love, it sounds hopeful - as if love can conquer all.
The two white birds above Edwards head is a bit of a joke actually. I put them there to show how his reason "fly away" I blame it all on lack of sleep... Above the bottom left corner you can see an angel looking upwards. I see her as either a guardian angel holding off some of the shadows or as a premonition that this will go bad - they'll end up in heaven. It sort of depends if I'm in a good mood or not! The splatters in that same corner is "scratches and blood". The wounds Edward inflicted on Bella when he left - wounds who's memory won't ever fade. The wounds Edward carries knowing what he did to Bella, what he put her through.
Furthermore, the choice of colour was not without thought. In the song, the first few notes - to me it sounds as if someone's bleeding and is in the kind of pain only one you love can inflict upon you. That's why I wanted red to dominate the piece. The blue/grey is cold and bright - much like Edward - and lightens up the piece - like Bella lights up Edwards life (and vice versa of course).

So I chose Deathzone, well it chose me rather, because when I listened to this song it just had such a somber tone, and yet it had an almost immenent feel with the underlying bass line like a death march. Which in my Doctor Who craze I have going I immediately thought of Rose and the Doctor. This scene in particular.
The extremely long winded explaination:
This entire episode has an apocalyptic theme to it, as Daleks are taking over the world wiping out humanity. Daleks only have the desire to be supreme, humanity with all it's emotion is flawed and doesn't deserve to exist in their view. It is here where a last battle is waged with the Doctor and Rose at the front lines. But, the Doctor can't put Rose into that position. He knows he will lose the fight and cannot stand to see anything happen to her. Rose, on the other hand, would face certain death to stand by his side. So he tricks her into the TARDIS and sends her back to her time. Rose, being Rose, has to get back to the Doctor, but is unable to work the TARDIS. Long story short, Rose takes the TARDIS (a living creature by the way) into herself and goes back to the future to help the Doctor. However, by absorbing the TARDIS she has done something no human can survive. It's just too much power for the body to handle.
Anyways, this song just really fit for that sole reason. The Doctor knows that if she doesn't let go of the power that is in her, she is going to die (the death march). Rose is doing it for him, to save him and to be with him. Hints the sadness of the song. And the building feeling of urgency in the song, just really captured this scene.
Alright, everyone! There are about four days left by my count until I close this challenge down! I wanted to take a moment to remind you all about a few things...
1) Brownie points for non-lyrical entries! That doesn't mean you will immediately win first place, but me lovah the non-lyrical entries. :p
2) YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THE SONGS THAT I'VE LISTED! If there is another song that you've heard and it is not on the list, please PM me and let me know so I can check to see if I have the song. :D
Great, great entries so far, I'm excited to judge them all! Keep 'em coming!!
Huh hope I'm not too late ^^, I really like this challenge it brought back my muse from its vacation :D
Entry two:
Life Burns
Blood Ties, not spoilery but explanationy (I hope ^^)
Yey I have really fallen in love with Apocalyptica, and I listen to them like a maniac! However, another new love I've found is Blood Ties ^^. I love the show! And I love Henry :p. He is such an old vampire, and cool (and with humour ^^). With this piece I wanted to show his personality, or more the different aspects. I mean he is the son of Henry VII, and a lot of an gentleman. On the other hand he asked to be turned to a vampire, and even though I'm not sure exactly how he is supposed to feel about it, he kind of lives the life ^^ (no pun intended). He cares more about people as specific, and not a lot about people in general. He is a monster (hey... vampire!?) and he has seen a lot of history (and as a living he makes comic books :p). And oh with this piece I actually decided to work with resources I normally don't use that often! And I discovered quite a few awesome, lurking in corners of my computer ^^.
Well yeah... I had an better explanation but I ten to have a very bad memory ^^.

Entry Three:
Farewell
Twilight, non-spoilery but very well...
Oh surprise surprise, a Twilight entry ^^. I worked as hell on this. To make it look not too much but still simple ^^ (I think I was very tired ^^). And njae I don't think I can say I'm quite satisfied still... but yeah. This work is built around the non-lyrical song Farewell. I totally adore that song, I'm not really sure why, but it appeal a lot to me =D. Anyway, this piece is built around the sweetness/bitterness think the song consists of. It's the official promo, which I haven't worked with before. The text is my own, after rereading Meyer's FAQ. It's their differences I play on. With him vampire, her human, predator/prey. And they ignoring that (or not ignoring but working around ^^). I also have brought in the deer seen in the trailer. I'm quite sure that's a big part of it. Her innocense as the prey. An apple, symbolising the knogledge and forbidden fruit. The forest symbolises getting lost, or not getting lost, and a moon might lead the way (also he is kind of a night creature), but also parts of their relationship. The only thing I really can't explain are the colours ^^.

First, love that you used Rosalie! Your choice in lyrics was perfect and I liked your explanation for it, how you interpreted the lryics, how you made it fit how she views her existence and what that existence took from her human life. Very fitting. Second, the background work you did is just epic. Great use of stocks and textures/brushes. :D

I adore the lyrics you chose for Jim and Pam and on top of that, the screencap choice because it just works so well! I love how Jim is looking towards her, pretty much the face of misery all over him and then you have Pam, pretty much oblivious. Very nice. :D

Once again, just an excellent lyric choice for the topic you chose. I love that you used the images from 'OMWF', with Buffy looking pretty terrified by what Spike is singing so honestly. It's also a great insight into Spike's character and how he views love and how he lets that control his central being. Lovely!

This song broke my heart while I was listening to it. You had an excellent understanding of what I was looking for in this challenge and the song you chose for this entry really just took me through the ups and downs and the guilt and freedom and love that she was feeling in that scene and how it all came into one single moment, how she was feeling. Awesome beans.

I loved your description of this piece, how the song and how you applied it to this scene made it seem like it was at the climax, or at the end of the show, or something to that degree. I love how your composition really spoke to that, brought that message across.

First, excellent lyric usage in this piece! You totally summed up Mick's existence with just a few words and made them look all elegant and such. Second, Moonlight! Third, great composition and use of stocks/textures/text. It's great how managed to bring the words to life, using the tools at hand.

Gah! I loved your song choice and how you practically summarized their entire relationship in just one piece. It was very nice how you used the quote, especially in accordance with the song and how that tells their story just by itself. You have such a great knack for getting in so many images and stocks and colors without overcrowding, rather letting them tell the story. It's brilliant.

So this piece pretty much rocked my world. I loved the Metallica song choice, especially the instrumental because it expresses more than the original, IMO, and you captured that. I love how you created a physical evidence of what the song was saying, with them on opposite sides and the light in the center representing their happy times. And your little stock additions and explanations cracked me up! :p

This piece was just drop-dead excellent... and gorgeous. I love that you seem to have taken some kind of turn in your art, giving the images more clarity and overall ooomph! and you can totally feel that in this entry! The story you told, I could see it as I listened to the song, see why you chose it and how you applied it. I love how you managed to capture the entire story in just one wall, and even put it in a sort of format to see that evolving... that really didn't make sense, but I just love it!

This piece that you entered was exactly what I was looking for in this challenge. The song to tell the story without you having to tell me what was going on. I love that you chose a somewhat violent song that pretty much is the equal of season finale-esque love, and you can definitely feel that here. Just... love it.
Alright, my feedback sort of dwindled at the end, but alas! Thank you for the awesome challenge and entries and I sure can't wait until next time! :p

WOOOHhoohooohooooo!!! Stunningly beautiful awards!!! MEGAHEARTS! Thank you for both the awards, I'm so glad you liked both my entries. This was just the challenge I was needing since I love the instrumental emotion and movement as much as I love lyrics. This was a great chance to try out doing a piece solely on the instrumental. Plus giving me the kick in the pants to listen to Apocalyptica again. :xd
Thank you so much for the opportunity and taking the risk on such an intimidating challenge.  Can't wait for your next one! :bounce:
