Challenge 69: The Lion and the Lamb

For this challenge, I decided to go a bit differently then I normally would and focus on the relationships formed between characters. Specifically the bonds that aren't healthy or are a bit dangerous.

Being completely obsessed with 'Twilight', I have come to realize that I love the forbidden relationships that form between characters. For this challenge I want to see those forbidden couplings. It doesn't have to be romantic (though I am sure it will be the prevelant type :2party: ). It can be a bond between enemies, uniting for a common cause. It can be a friendly relationship, such as when Rose first joins the Doctor, knowing that the situations he leads her into can be lethal. Virtually anything goes, as long as the relationship has some basis as being unhealthy or dangerous to one or both of the characters.

I am going to leave this challenge very simple and allow you to take whatever liberties you need with the theme. Anything and everything goes. It's just always more interesting that way. Just be sure to stick with the basic principle of the theme....dangerous. Doesn't have to mean the piece shows a moment of danger, just a relationship coupling that could be dangerous.

Explanation

So as soon as I saw this I knew I wanted to art Sam and Ruby. There's a kinda unnatural attraction between them, and although Sam knows she's trouble and dangerous he can't stop himself from allowing her to lead him straight to the path of evil. He tries to kid himself that she wont lead him there because he thinks she can help him and Dean, but really she can't ever be good for him. The words express that confusion

Ruby on her part is caught between wanting Sam to lead the fight against evil and being drawn to her demonic side, which she can't escape. That is symbolised by the mirror showing her as she really is and hell on her heels constantly.

It seems half the world is on a Twilight trip ;) Anyhow, this challenge really *really* inspired me to do a Edward/Bella piece (not that I've been doing anything else but you'll get it soon enough). See, I'm re-reading book one and guess what I read last night just after I'd seen this challenge? The scene where he actually says "...the lion fell in love with the lamb...". It was like a sign (more like, it was the only good Edward/Bella idea I'd gotten for a day or two ^^) - and I had to art it.

The thingy about the piece
Ok, so the basic idea here is that it's dangerous when a lion falls in love with a lamb, so to speak. It's dangerous for the lamb, because what if the lion suddenly gets peckish? Poor lamb ;) No, seriously, seeing as you're as obsessed as I am I'm sure you get the gist of the piece. What I do want to add is why I chose the colours etc. like I did... I really wanted a warm colour spectrum because even though the quote is just a tad cynical and not what you'd call "fluffy puppy, gooey-eyed love" it still expresses the strongest of all feelings - love - and that love can win over everything; even the predator/prey relationship. Which is what their relationship (and this challenge) is about. I really wanted light in there as well, because their love is like fireworks exploding and shining. Furthermore, the main picture of Bella is turned away but Edward's not. Why is this? Because in the book, Bella looks away to hide how thrilled she is to hear him say he loves her - she's very shy. Edward is not.

About the piece:
One of the most seductive forbidden romances ever, in my opinion, is the romance between Dracula and Mina in Bram Stoker's novel. I found Winona Ryder and Gary Oldman's portrayal of these characters in Francis Ford Coppola's film to be one of the best and just had to make art to it. This is a terribly dangerous relationship, although as it progresses, Mina begins to give into the idea of becoming one of the undead. She has to give up everything, including her life, to be with Dracula.

Well, you have watched Alias, right? I'm pretty sure you have. So I don't need to go into the Syd/Sark relationship, right? ;) I hope not. 'Cause me is too tired to explain it all out. So, for me, the first thing that popped in my head for this challenge is the episode "The Counteragent" where Sark enlists, or rather, blackmails/coerces Syd into helping him abduct Sloane. I have two favorite Sark quotes and this is one of them. It's just always stuck with me and what can I say? The challenge commanded me to do some Syd/Sark action. They are total enemies and yet, there are certain circumstances that inevitably arise where they need to each other to complete a task. And this is one of them! :)

Superb challlenge idea!

Here comes the science bit:D

I took the basic premise of the challenge (dangerous relationships) and made a piece illustrating how Buffy can only find real love/passion with the typical bad boy. Namely Angel and Spike. As we all know Buffy is the Slayer, so as Angel & Spike are vampires, they should naturally be her enemies.....well Spike was at first but Angel not so much. Don't think I really need to go into the dynamics of both relationships (cause we all know) suffice to say that she tried the nice, safe relationship with Riley and we all know how boring that was lol. Buffy needs the danger, the passion, the highs, the lows that come with such volatile relationships. As Spike said to Riley "The girl needs some monster in her man". As for the actual wall I used red to hopefully illustrate the fire/passion of both relationships, the brushes of poetry to symbolise lurve, caps of fighting to show the volatile nature of it, the stake cause hello vampire/slayer thingy. Blood brushes to show the hurt/damage both relationships caused. I also added in stocks of the cross and ring Angel gave Buffy....then I was like damn what can I use for Spike.....but I quickly ignored that fact. Anyways I couldn't decide whether I liked the border or not so I'm posting the two. Hope that's okay and that the idea fits the challenge ok:xd

Entry One: Forbidden Love
this is a great idea for a challenge, mines an entry from hollyoaks i don't know if this is aired outside of the UK but I'll explain what's gone on ;)
Rhys fell in love with Beth and vice versa when they first met,they didn't tell anyone about their relationship in case they "jinxed it" but when Rhys's biological dad died Rhys found out he had a sister which was Beth, they stopped seeing each other and tried to get over each other and Beth started going out with Rhys's best mate Gilly, Beth was more or less forced to move in with Rhys and his family, but still no one knew about their relationship. Anyway they ended carrying on their relationship behind everyone's back but Beth couldn't take it any more and her and Gilly went off for a round the world trip. But when they returned Gilly decided to propose to Beth, and Beth still trying to get over her relationship with Rhys and said yes. A couple of weeks later and Rhys and Beth were back at it again, until Gilly found out and then it all kicked off, Beth got kicked out Rhys stayed with her, and Gilly rang the police for incest. Rhys and Beth got arrested and let out on bail and they decided to run away together, but anyway when they got away and was on the road all happy you knew something bad was going to happen and then there was a massive crash and Beth died instantly.
That's the story behind the whole Beth and Rhys thing, I hope I explained it like it is, anyway my piece is based on that :D

Entry One: It's Just You

Alrighty, so I know you don't watch this show (and shame on you! :roll: ) but I just can't get away from it. A basic rundown, Mick St. John is a vampire who is also a PI and Beth is a reporter for a somewhat skeezy but reputable online news "station" (I know, sounds a little bit like Angel, but no. Very different). Long story short, they like each other. Boy likes girl, girl likes boy, we know how this goes. Alas, in this epsiode 'Fated to Pretend', Mick has a cure that turns him temporarily human (later to turn back into a vampire, in an undisclosed amount of time) from his sire and throughout the episode, he's enjoying himself and building up the courage to finally get together with Beth, "all the way", I'd like to dream, :lol: . Alas, things don't go that way, as is the fate of couples such as this, and Mick purposefully gets turned back into a vampire earlier than planned because Beth got kidnapped by a nasty vamp and human!Mick sucks at fighting, thus saving her without getting himself killed. Anyway, this is the end scene, at the date they had made when he was human and he's very much so back to being off-limits, walls up again, and Beth just can't stand it anymore because she knows the real reason why Mick won't get together with her, while he believes (he doesn't want to hurt her, and all in all, get hurt himself because he's had a rocky past) that relationships between humans and vampires are of the bad: dangerous and complicated and end in heavy heartbreak and likely death of the human - which they are, but Beth is willing to accept that because of how they feel for each other *le sigh*, work through those complications, etc.

It took forever to get this piece right, I'll be honest I just heard this song on a fanmix I'd downloaded and OMG I had to art something, and it fit for the challenge, as far as my interpretation. :p The coloring was being a horrible wee devil, but it worked out, I think.

Whew. I hope that made sense. Guess I should read back through it...

Yet she tries to help Sam and his brother when she can, but what is her story. Why does she help the brothers? And what happens if these two were to form more than a partnership here and there.

Awesome challenge :heart:, and I like the liberties you are allowed to take with it, even though I think I might be the most boring person ever, since I still chose Edward/ Bella :p

Entry One
A bit spoilery for all of the books I think...

As I said I were this boring and chose Bella/Edward (oh why can't I snap out of this obsession ^^). It's a typical "dangerous" relationship. I mean he is a vampire, he want's to kill her ("like all the time" :D) and they can't have a normal relationship. And if he would "slip" and kill her, it wouldn't be good for him either (firstly he would probably be a likely suspect, and secondly he loves her, ie he would probably go to Italy again ^^).

Mainly with this piece I wanted to show that, and him being a monster and their love and all... And this piece has a bit of weird symbols for this relationship. The forest... I mean she is lost without him, and the forest is one of the key-points in their relationship. And there is a road, as in he left her, and now none of them can leave the other... and so on...^^. The angel on the other hand, I thought of him being "dead" and all, and not believing he has a soul, and she only thinks he is awesome-looking ^^, but not a monster at all. The irish cross was actually a couple of gravestones from the beginning, but they didn't fit :(. Anyway, the cross sombolises the big gap between them as in he is dead... or should have been like 100 years ago ^^. Whew, long weird explanatin again, what is up with me =S.

I chose to art about Cordelia and Connor, first of all because this is a dangerous, forbidden couple and second of all because the lamb is the guy and the lion is the girl, which I find quite interesting. I went for warm colors and add some light stocks as a reminder of the rain of fire outside. The lyrics are from Robbie Williams's song "Feel", they fit Connor's state of mind in that episode pretty well I think.

About the piece: A very simple piece, but a couple we are all familiar with. Buffy and Angel are a tragic love because he's a vampire and she's a Slayer. So, this piece shows the dangerous relationship between Edward & Bella. Edward being a vampire and Bella being human is actually dangerous for both of them because Bella could be killed and Edward, by killing her, could go against what he believes; that he should not feed on humans. The caps I chose are there to illustrate that at the beginning, Edward really wants to kill Bella and that he really has to fight in order to stay away from her and his desire. Wallpaper wise, I chose black and white to emphasize on the aspect of danger. The scratches show that Edward is like an animal inside a cage who wants to come out, and the red "spiral" in the background is there to illustrate that he is torn between his need for Bella's blood and the fact that he needs to resist it at the same time.

If it kills me, I'm going to try to get you at least a wee bit interested in Moonlight. :roll: And you shouldn't make your challenges so open ended because you know I'll make them as obscure as I can.

For my second entry, I'm showing more of a literal dangerous moment for this "couple". This is from 'Fated to Pretend' where Mick is turned human by a cure from his sire. Now Beth, his intense love interest from my earlier entry, is kidnapped by bad vamps and this is the scene where Mick asks - more or less - his [vampire] friend Josef to turn him back ahead of schedule so he can save Beth. I chose this moment because it's dangerous and forbidden in many ways, depending on how you look at it. I wanted to show the grief from Josef at Mick wanting to go back after all he went through to get the human cure (a great deal for Beth, in the end) and the forbidden aspect of Mick turning back into a vampire, the gravity of his sacrifice. There is also a little of the literal "lion" and "lamb" between Josef and Mick here. So I guess this is showing the dangers of losing what was and then literally showing the dangers of life, the balance between life and death, when turning a human into a vampire, especially one that is still a vampire, only masked by human qualities. You really have to watch the show for most of this to make sense, because I'm blabbering.

My second piece and my newest obsession. I don't think I have ever entered a challenge twice, but I can't stop myself.

This piece is of Mick and Beth from Moonlight. He's a vampire, she's a human. He likes her, she likes him. Yet he knows they can't really be together because he's afraid she will get hurt. But I found this pic and I had to try something with it.

Entry two

Explanation
So we know that Rose is the first companion of the new Doctor Who, and that she is around for two seasons. At the end of Season two she gets stuck in an alternative dimension to the Doctor and there is no way back. The Doctor manages to find a way to visit her only for a short time to say goodbye, and she tells him that she loves him. Unfortunately, the link between the dimensions is lost just as he's about to say it back. Their time together just too damn short and heartbreaking because of it.

This piece shows the aftermath of that short conversation. Rose very upset and only longing for a way to get back to him, and with him looking over her as if in heaven with tears streaming down his face too. I imagine it a very "French Lieutenant's Daughter" type of scene, with her waiting and waiting for him to find a way back to her. I've shown the passage of time by one side of her being in daylight and one side at night.

Second entry, this is a piece from a movie called Blue Car, which is about a young girl. She has a sort of troubled life, her father is absent etc. Then her teacher encourages her to enter a poetry contest and then they start to like eachother. This piece is from a scene where he, the teacher, tells her that "he wishes he could show her how he feels". I think this suits the "theme" of the challenge, 'cause student/teacher affairs are very forbidden, and could be dangerous!

Ok, so I'm going to put this explanation in spoiler tags because I'm not sure where my ranting will fall in the seasons....:lol:

So, my peice is centered on Starbuck and Apollo from Battlestar Galactica. Their's has been an on-again, off-again kind of affair from the beginning. They are totally in love, but it has been a forbidden love from the beginning. First it was forbidden because Kara was engaged to Lee's brother before he died. Then when they got past that, Kara's such an emotional mess that her own personal demons has made this forbidden to her - she even went so far as to marry somebody else the day after her and Lee (finally) consumated their relationship. So, I guess the danger part comes in in that Kara views being with Lee as dangerous to her self-punishment - never allowing herself to be happy and healthy. It's also dangerous because, well, she's married....:lol:

I chose the lyrics 'Outside' by Staind because they summed up nicely the way Lee sees and feels about Kara.

As if you don't have a million other shows you're keeping up with, but you NEED to watch Moonlight! :heart:

Mick and Beth's love is so interesting in that it's not based on a sexual attraction but instead on their understanding and comfortableness with each other. Even though she is in a long term relationship with a loving man, Josh, when she first becomes acquainted with Mick, she is still drawn to Mick for the safeness she feels with him. She still has love and loyalty for Josh and fears the the ramifications of being involved romantically with vampire. She decides to recommit to the safer of lives, and finds out that it wasn't safer, and that her mortal love was just that. Even though her head was in the right place, fate won't let her escape the dangers of loving Mick so easily.

Hmmm...I hope I made some sense at 3am about how her love with Mick is her destiny and that even if she tried to avoid it for all the right reasons, fate leaves her no choice but to embrace that love and all its danger.

Explanation
This is one of the relationships in the Buffyverse that I would definetely consider dangerous, despite it changing over time. Both Buffy and Faith are Slayers, but Faith keeps going over to the dangerous side of life and trying to drag Buffy in with her. Buffy remains the 'good' Slayer throughout all of Faith's issues. A relationship that at the beginning was wonderful goes through extremely dark times and in the end comes out balanced. I tried to find the right images to really show this and FINALLY decided on the images from Sanctuary. I feel these images show a lot of emotion and the text really tells a lot about their relationship in so few words.

Entry Three: Flames of Hellfire

Alright, my last entry... sucked. I had to change it! And I like this one much better, just the idea of it (goes pretty abstract... again). I wanted to show the relationship between Dean and... himself, concerning the deal he made, how he views himself as a person and where he's headed after his one year of life. IMO, the interaction in 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' really set the scene for Dean viewing himself as two different people: the man he has to live with inside, and the man he puts on to show that life is dandy to everyone else. This also concerns Hell a great deal, because he fears it, fears what's going to happen to him when he does go downstairs, because as Ruby said, that's how demons are created: they were human and were sent to Hell. Very disturbing, especially for Dean, considering his somewhat black and white views of human and non-human (kind of reflects back to IMTOD when the Reaper is explaining how angry spirits are born). Basically, the deal opened the door for him to see what's going on inside his mind and what will happen when he goes to Hell, the evil that will be released from within himself and what he will go through in Hell. I threw in the demonic image from 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' for that, as well as Dean sort of going through the motions: fighting it, fearing it, grieving, as well as some doors from the Devil's Gate from when they killed the YED, just to give Hell a little more of a literal meaning here. All in all, it's a relationship between human Dean (what is now) and non-human Dean (what will be when [if] he goes to Hell) and the extreme danger of losing his humanity and becoming the very thing(s) he fights. The lion and the lamb in the same mind. :p

I chose the text from different episodes to show what he's thinking and what to expect, as well as his fear of what he'll become when he gets there. The lyrics themselves have a very different meaning in the song as a whole (at least what I could read of them), so I sort of manipulated them to fit the idea of this piece. :D

Second entry
Yeah my first Moonlight piece ^^

Not very spoilery since I haven't seen the latest episodes yet^^

Hihi I feel a bit different since I'm neither doing Twilight art :D, or Mick/Beth the most normal dangerous relationship in Moonlight ^^. Mick and Coraline, they are both vampires and have quite a weird relationship. I mean, as Josef, Mick's friend said, something about it's not only a dangerous but destructive realtionship. He "killed" ( ^^ ) her, and she's still inlove and it's just weird (... as I said I haven't seen the latest episodes yet ^^). In addition, he is inlove with Beth (or kind of, I think it's just very gross), and shouldn't care as much for Coraline as he does. Both their feelings for each other aren't good, or healthy.

With this piece I wanted to show how she shows up very unexpected and how it isn't good for neither of them. And he probably feels like crap when she shows up and he thought he had killed her (as he intened too).

Urk I really wasn't very good at describing this piece ^^ (but it is in the middle of the night, I feel excused :D).

Kiiinda lazy right now, and in a rush (is that an oxymoron?) so I didn't make a thumbnail, but I will make a short description!

The idea mainly came from a discussion about how Bella would most likely be damned if she were to be vamped and that is why she shouldn't go through with it, and as a counter I said that she would rather be damned than to live a single moment with Edward and thus began this wall and its text. The forbideness (real word?) I was goin for is the damning of a soul knowingly and that it is kind of taboo I guess. I used the red bar across their faces to signify the bloodlust that he has over her and that when/if he does turn her, they will be bonded in that way, I also made Bella a sorta faded Black and White to show her coming death to help empathize the draining of her life. I hope I made sense :lol:

Oooh, extremely last minute. Like way last minute. But I've been sitting on this for weeks, and I've finally been able to finish it!

Entry One: Change My Life
Okay, so this piece is about Twilight...Oh, wait. No, it isn't! I'm not so used to this non-Twilight thing :eek: But as fiercely as I love Edward and Bella, they are still not Clark and Chloe for me. I love Clark/Chloe too much to be dethroned by Edward/Bella. No extremely long explanation for this piece, as I'm afraid someone will come close the challenge before I finish :lol:

But basically, being close to Clark puts Chloe in danger. But she gets so much more out of life being able to help and know Clark. And I think the world owes her a lot, because WHAT would Clark do without her?! He neeeds her! But still, dangerous. Because being around Clark is like a life-threatening situation! Yet, at the same time, they keep saving each other in different ways. Pretty nifty.

The thought and concepts, the love, everything was so amazing and brilliant and this was by far the hardest challenge I have ever had to judge. The concept of this one was wonderful! You really nailed the danger aspect of this challenge and I LOVE how you composed this piece. The subtle coloring, the darkness, and the manipulation just all worked together perfectly!

I really loved the coloring and layout of this piece. The text worked perfectly and these images are to die for! Such wonderful choices to work with. You really got across Edward's turmoil and blood lust with this piece!




Dangerous Awards

These awards are for couplings that go beyond the danger mark, with stunning details and amazing artistry.

This has to be my favorite coupling of all time. So classic and dark, and yet sweet and sad at the same time. This was such a wonderful piece. It's simple and yet the coloring really helps to set the foreshadowing tone of their relationship. I love the filtering and the composition, very different from what I would have thought to do. Lovely!

I had never even heard of this show, but the piece just looks so forbidden and dangerous! The composition and images are WONDERFUL! Just the posturing of the actors really sets the feel, and I love the subtle stock detailing and coloring.

What caught me about this piece was the highly contrasted coloring. While I feel the filtering is a bit too strong and the brushes might have been a tad too much in places, I cannot deny this piece is stunning. I love how you included other subtle images of Spike/Buffy/Angel in the piece, and just overall this was a highly interesting piece for me. Everytime I look a little bit deeper I see something else. Plus I love the text as it really sums up how unhealthy her relationships are. Great concept!!



Dazzling Awards

For me, these are the pieces that really brought something new, stylistically to the table. They took some chances and just floored me! Really these are the pieces that caught me off gaurd and made me think to myself, 'Now that is SOMETHING!'.

I saw this and my jaw was on my keyboard! I loved the coloring and the texturing. The text was done beautifully. Just wow! I would have liked to see the images of Edward and Bella stand out just a bit more, maybe using the curves adjustment layer would have helped, but this piece is original and stunning! No denying it!

Holy Cow! The composition of this piece, the filtering! I really love looking at it. It's simple, to the point, and beautiful! I would like to see a little more filling out, just a few subtle textures around the edges maybe, just something to bring a little more meat to it. Great work!

This piece is just, WOW! I love how you have Bella and Edward on opposite ends of the canvas allowing you to focus on the Lamb and the Lion. Symbolism at its greatest! The coloring and light stocks, the filtering, the text...flawless!

This piece, when I saw it, just knocked my socks off! The thought and symbolism you brought into this piece, the time and effort. The filtering, texturing, the whole package is brilliant.
